I've had surprisingly good luck with sweet potatoes. I cut them up, toss them in olive oil, and sprinkle them with salt, pepper, and a smidge of cajun seasoning and then bake them like fries. Yummm.
Sweet potatoes I can handle, anything made from a regular potato...nope.
I tried a few different bands and flavors and decided the Cookies and Cream Quest bars are my favs. 22 carbs total, but 17g are fiber. With 21g of protein they are pretty filling. Sometimes I can only eat half.
Strawberry Cheesecake flavor was my second favorite, but it was cheaper to buy a case of one flavor rather than an assortment once I had sampled them.
Okay, this may come out as a jumbled mess, and I apologize, I'll try to make it as sensical as possible.
So! I'm on insulin for my fasting numbers that I can't get below target (in Canada it has to be under 5.3). I started at 4 units, am now at 10 units, increasing by 2 units each time. I have been told to go to 14 units, which I will do tonight. The problem is that throughout all of my increases, my fasting blood glucose has remained very stable, on average it is 5.7. All of my post meal numbers are well under target.
The other night I forgot to take my 10 units of insulin, and my fasting was 5.4. So I didn't take it again the following night, and my fasting was 5.7. I took it the following two nights, with a fasting BG of 5.7 and 5.9 the next days.
It seems really bizarre to me that my BG is so stable, regardless of whether or not I take insulin. I emailed my endocrinologist, and she told me that my hormones are increasing, and will continue to increase, causing increased need for insulin, and to up it to 14 units.
I responded that I thought it was highly unlikely that my hormones were increasing at the exact rate and time my dosages of insulin were increasing, and that still didn't explain my getting the same results with or without the insulin. I also told her that I would try a couple nights at 14 units of insulin, but if I got the same result I would be stopping my insulin injections, but continuing to monitor my BG and follow the diet guidelines. Obviously if my BG spikes I'll reevaluate my plan, but that's where I'm at right now.
It seems to me that my placenta and liver are working to keep my BG stable, regardless of how much insulin that I take at bedtime. I've eaten off of the diet several times (gone out for dinner, had popcorn at movies, etc) and my BG has never been over target, or even that close to it.
This leads me to believe that I don't have an insulin resistance issue, my placenta is doing what it needs to.
I wish I could have a big bowl or risotto. I've also had a craving for mac and cheese and bread pudding lol
luckily, I actually do pretty well with mashed potatoes if I don't overdo it. I can tolerate a cup at most..
@NorthernTalia, I have no advice for you but I know that I started at 6 units and am now at 16. I have been on insulin since January 15 and have increased it each time I had a high fasting number. It has been under 5.3 with the insulin so it is obviously helping me. I would follow your doctor's advice.. There may be other factors affecting your fasting levels with the insulin. Do you snack before bed? how many carbs do you have at dinner? etc..
With all of this blah food talk, has anyone started thinking/day dreaming about their post-labor meal? And I don't mean hospital food.
Mine keeps changing, but basically it consists of a pizza or noodles (the restaurant keeps changing) and some type of cake (cheesecake, chocolate mousse cake, etc.).
DH knows he will need to make a food run - and that he will need to get extra b/c I'm not sharing.
Oh, and my latest idea - bake a birthday/congrats cake at home to distract in early labor - and then eat it all up after LO arrives.
All my friends at work have started assembling a list of food items to bring me after the baby gets here. They range from blueberry muffins from my favorite bakery, to Mac & cheese, to cake, to pizza, to buttered noodles & champagne. I thought I would want the champagne the most, but really I just want ALL the carbs & sugar!!
I'm pretty sure I'm getting Chinese food ASAP. My birthday is April 8 and I'm due April 18. I may postpone my birthday cake so I can binge instead of just having one little piece.
Mama to a little girl born July 2011 and a little boy born April 2014!

Yep. I'll still need insulin after the baby is born (I'm Type 1), but it won't be like it is now and my Endocrinologist already told me to plan on a giant, carb filled meal with dessert for after delivery. My DH knows that I want chicken pad thai, a spring roll and some freaking cheesecake. Can't.Wait.
My own pint of B&J and some serious champagne cocktail action are my dreams. Not sure about main course... maybe pizza?

My list is eerily similar!! Twix, poutine, Mac and cheese, champagne, pizza, sushi..the list goes on!! Lol
@northerntalia I am dealing with the same thing with nighttime, started at 8 units three weeks ago and now up to 20, my endocrinologist gave me the same explanation about the placenta and hormones. She assured me 20 units is still a pretty small dose. Good luck!
poutine sounds awesome but its hard to find here in the States so my list consists of lots of sushi and a bucket of boardwalk style fries smothered in a vinegary tomato BBQ sauce...or vinegar and old bay. I haven't decided. maybe half and half? french fries send my sugar off like crazy.
At first I wanted sushi and a giant alcoholic chocolate milkshake. Still want the milkshake, but changed the food to one of the massive burritos from a local restaurant and one of their fantastic sopapillas. Now I may change it again, keeping the sopapilla for dessert and going back to the sushi, plus a giant order of lemon chicken since that seems to be all I want lately.
At this rate, I'm going to have something from every restaurant in the city waiting for me after labor! XD

Went to the doctor today, he was fine with my numbers but since my pelvis started opening at 32 weeks (I'm now almost 35 weeks) he told me I have to start cutting back my exercise which makes me nervous as I think half the reason my numbers have been fine is because I exercise daily (walking, Bar Method, Prenatal Yoga sometimes doing two or all three of those things in a day). I'm frustrated with this also because my level of pain is the same whether I work out or not so I don't see why I have to cut back if exercising doesn't make it hurt more. I'm a really active person and I struggle with just laying around and not doing anything. Not to mention being active got me out of the house and keeps me from going stir crazy in this cold weather. My only silver lining is that baby will be here next month so its not for too long but still a bit of a bummer for me. I go back in two weeks for a growth scan so hopefully everything is normal there.\
Also to tag onto the thread about after baby first meal: I want mushroom risotto and chocolate cake cake with bavarian cream between the layers and chocolate fudge frosting on top and oatmeal cookies but will likely have to wait until I get home because I really only like the way my husband makes risotto and I don't want him going home to make that while I'm in the hospital.

That's a really small dose! If it makes you feel any better, I take 90 units of insulin before bed, another 60 as soon as I wake up and 30-35 units at each meal.

I had to stop my exercise regimen in the second trimester because of the SPD. It sucks. At least you've been able to be pretty active up until now. I cannot wait until I can go for a run again. I miss my personal quiet thinking time. Nothing nullified my anxiety and stress like a good run.
your cake request made me think about a napoleon pastry and how good that would be and then I thought I'd like an éclair as well. a nice big one. I'm not really a sweets person usually but for some reason these both sound really good to me
Had my first (and only) appointment with the MFM dr today, baby Chase is weighing in approx. under 6 lbs which puts him in the 56th percentile. Fluid is good, my glucose levels have been good, so he basically gave us an A+ and said see ya next pregnancy! This is a reminder why we go thru all the headache! Keep your heads up ladies, we are on the downhill slope now!
I ate a doughnut today. And a blueberry muffin. I've been SO good, I swear, but today I just couldn't turn away from it! I've been trying to walk a lot since, so we'll see how my post-lunch numbers are (ate a GD-friendly chicken Cobb salad for lunch). Kinda nervous about it, but they were SO good!
Sorry for the annoying caps but I really needed to get that out! It feels like the closer I get, the harder it is to control my "cravings."
@rockstarlaw, we just have to give in once in a while I think. I want skittles so bad right now and will probably go get myself a bag.. Weekends are the worst because all I want to do is eat!
I would also love a bag of potato chips right now. A BIG bag. Thank God they don't sell them (at all, even the tiny worthless bags) in the vending machine at work!
Unbelievable. After a doughnut, a blueberry muffin & my sensible GD-friendly lunch my blood sugar was a low 77! I maintain this whole thing doesn't make much sense to me sometimes...
Hormones are higher in the morning. Even though I have very few carbs in the morning I'm often in the 120s! More carbs later in the day will usually give me a lower number.
Mama to a little girl born July 2011 and a little boy born April 2014!
Weird. Usually my post-lunch numbers are higher than my post-breakfast numbers. I've been attributing that to being at work for half of the day (ie increased stress)
That's great on induction! Even my Midwives (who I think are pretty non interventionist, even with the gd) want the baby here by 41 weeks.
I feel you on the weight. I remember in my first pregnancy I didn't gain much weight in the middle, but towards the end it's nearly impossible to avoid!
Mama to a little girl born July 2011 and a little boy born April 2014!
my docs say they'll induce at 39 weeks. I've expressed my desire for that not to occur and I guess when it gets a little closer I'll start the argument again and tell them that induction isn't going to happen. hoping I go naturally before then.
my numbers are lowest in the morning and that's where I can splurge. by dinner my numbers are in the high 90s low 100s and I have to be more careful about going over my carb allotment. The nice thing is that since I started the glyburide I've been able to move off the protein shakes (grossness) to ice cream as my before bed snack to keep my fasting #s in check!
My neighbor delivered my pre GD Girl Scout cookie order yesterday. I think I'll make my husband hide them.
Freeze them until after your baby's born.
We got ours right before I got my GTT results and I asked DH to hide them. He did a horrible job (like when I opened the pantry they were right there).
Then I put them in the freezer, but before I had my initial meeting for my GD, those suckers were gone (though I did have 2 a day instead of, um, ALL of them).
Unbelievable. After a doughnut, a blueberry muffin & my sensible GD-friendly lunch my blood sugar was a low 77! I maintain this whole thing doesn't make much sense to me sometimes...
I've been having a blueberry muffin or a donut for breakfast with half a cup of cottage cheese, and my numbers are consistently in the mid 80s. Occasionally I will switch it out for 1/2 a whole wheat English muffin to be good, but I hate most breakfast foods and don't have time to make eggs or anything.
I am getting really sick of making breakfast every morning. It's just scrambled eggs toast and coffee, so it's not a ton of work, but it's EVERY MORNING.
Mama to a little girl born July 2011 and a little boy born April 2014!
Also (sorry for posting so much!) I am in a total food funk today. I've been really good all week, but I just couldn't stomach the lunch I took today (1/2 a grilled chicken breast, a cup of whole wheat couscous, and some blueberries).
Instead I was really bad and picked up a burger and small shamrock shake at McDonalds - which I proceeded to throw up 4 hours later.
Now DH is out to dinner with MIL who is in town and we have no food. I'm too tired to defrost/cook some protein from the freezer or get off my butt and pick something up, so he's bringing me home chili from Wendy's (and a value fry. It's been a rough day).
Tomorrow I am definitely going to the grocery store and restocking on healthy things that seem appealing to me, but today I'm giving in to my food misery.

I can't say much, because I'll admit my SO makes my eggs every morning he's around, but for Tues & Thurs when he goes into work early I picked up some frozen Jimmy Dean Delites on the honey wheat flatbread with egg whites, cheese & sausage. I've been doing ok numbers-wise with those and at least they only take 2 minutes in the microwave. I prefer the Kellogs Special K flatbread sandwiches, but the JDs were on sale.
