@lilaros Our delivery hospital has restricted guests to spouses/partners/co-parents identified at patient registration. I doubt that they'll lift that before June, either. :( I'm sad DS can't come visit his baby brother in the hospital, but at least we have time to plan an extra special homecoming for them both.

  • Whelp, I'm working from home indefinitely.
  • Yep. Started working from home this afternoon too and will remain home indefinitely. DD’s daycare remains open for now. Most area schools are closing starting Monday for the next two weeks...
  • Another one to the working from home indefinitely crew! We got the email yesterday evening. Now let’s see when DD’s nursery is closed...

  • The school district I work for is closed starting today and all of next week. So is my son’s district. Any other teachers have their district closed?

Plus one for working from home. I feel guilty for thinking mostly about how this will impact me and what it will be like come June but I can't help it.

I passed my glucose test! Arm is still sore from the whopping cough vaccine which is insane to me. Im already starting to worry about the possiethst I can't breastfeed and what that may mean for formula come June. Store shelves are empty for wipes and formula around here. Definitely getting the elvie pump to try and make my own supply as long as I can now.
  • I’m glad I’m not the only one that’s not so much worried about the virus itself but bummed about it affecting the care we’ll receive and our hospital experience. I wasn’t planning on having a lot of guests in the hospital, just our immediate family. But I’d rather they visit in hospital than when I’m home and feel like I have to be a good host lol
  • @bbluemoo Chicago has a child infected now so I am definitely worried for our babies. We don't know how newborns will handle exposure because it's too new.
  • When our last baby was born in 2/2018, the hospital was on lock down from most visitors. I remember feeling very bummed leading up to it, especially because we wanted our DS1 to meet him right away. I ended up loving the quite time unexpectedly though. He got to meet him the day after we brought him home (we got home really late) and he came running in with a stuffed animal for baby so excited. It was the most special intimate moment that I’ll forever cherish.

As far as guests in hospital vs at home too, i always did feel like i needed to entertain at home, which i wish i could let go of, but sometimes i found it nice actually. I felt like it sort of broke up the day a bit, which when i was struggling so much with breast feeding, recovery and emotions was sort of nice. And i found that everyone was always respectful of me needing to feed babe. With my first I’d always go in a different room, with my second i was more comfortable and depending on the guest would just use a cover and stay and chat.

All of this to say, don’t worry about the restrictions! Whatever happens, will be your experience and it will be good and memorable all in its own special way!

  • @brose1117 Thank you for that. I'll admit I've been kind of disappointed thinking my son won't be able to meet his baby sister in the hospital. This baby took a really long time to conceive (Secondary IF, and RPL) and I have had this idea in my head for years now of that moment he gets to come in and see me and baby. I'm glad to hear not getting it didn't take away from your experience and big brother still had a special moment.

  • Thanks for sharing @brose1117! This helps stem some of my disappointment at the thought of guests not being allowed at the hospital.

On another note, are people planning on diaper shortages due to all of this coronavirus stuff? Just wondering if I need to be stocking up on newborn/size 1 diapers (which I wasn’t even considering until now).
  • Maternity is on lockdown here too. I work in a hospital, non-clinical staff was told we can work remotely for 3 weeks (the length of time school is closed so far). I’ve had a couple people ask/tell me to go home or if I’m more worried because I’m pregnant. I don’t work in a patient care area so I’m still here for now. Things escalated very quickly. I’m worried about what it’s going to be like come June.
  • This is when I hate being a nurse. I’m rethinking my life choices lol. But in all seriousness, the well being of the little babe scares me. I’m hoping the peak comes well before we deliver and is no longer a threat
  • @kjack86 I know wipes are an issue now. I have a tiny pack of newborn but they go through so many diapers on the beginning maybe I should get some 1s. Don't get a lot of nb though. With ds the hospital gave me so many I didn't run out until he was fitting size 1 just fine.
  • We dropped to one visitor per patient yesterday and outside of maternity no visitors after 10pm.  We are screening EVERYBODY prior to entry into the hospital.  I'm officially exempt from taking care of all patients with upper respiratory symptoms which I'm definitely not mad about ;).  I really hope this peaks and passes before baby comes the end of June so DS can meet DS2 in the hospital he has been so excited.
  • Welp. I just heard back from my doctor that I've failed the 1-hr glucose test. :'( Grr. I'm hopeful the 3 hour test will show that everything is fine. Anyone else fail the 1hr but got the all-clear after the 3hr?

I mostly don't want to go back to the lab and sit there for 3 hours. This isn't the ideal time for this kind of thing, with everyone coughing all around. Sigh!
  • @mariabele I had to take an early glucose and I failed the 1 hour but passed the 3, so it does happen. Unfortunately, my doctor said that now I have to go straight to the 3 hour this time. Good luck and I hope you pass the 3 hour!
  • @mariabele I did my first time! I haven’t done it yet-scheduled for Wednesday this time around. Keep us posted!

    Married: 12/19/15

  • @mariabele The 1hr has a high false positive rate because it's a screening test and they don't want to miss anyone who might need more thorough training. MANY people pass the 3hr after having failed the 1hr. It's not over until it's over! Good luck!

  • My city just escalated my stress level to a whole new level. Yesterday they sent out a new mandate to all the hospitals in the City saying that no non-essential people are allowed at the hospital with any patients over 18. Non-essential people includes partners of women in labor. WTF?! The City run and Kaiser hospitals they are turning partners away at L&D check in. One of the other hospital systems is allowing partners to be present for the birth but kicking them out once the baby is delivered. Thus far my hospital is getting around this by using an "exception algorithm" that allows them to label spouses and partners as essential but I have no idea if they are kicking partners out after delivery.

I cannot imagine giving birth without my husband. Not to mention, it is denying one parent the right to be present at their child's birth. This is so messed up. Right now the mandate is only in place though April 30th, but I'm scared enough we are likely going to switch OBs and Hospitals to the next city over.
  • @lilaros - which city (or state if you're not comfortable sharing city)?
  • @lilaros I'm connected with a few midwifery groups that are nationwide, and if things progress in this country as they have been and as expected, that restriction will be all of California in the next week, and all of the country in the next 2-3 weeks. The CDC's current recommendation is also to separate mom and baby if mom is infected or exposed at time of delivery.

Midwives are recommending out of hospital birth centers and home birth to low risk people, in order to avoid the hospital bans on labor support and higher chance of exposure.

I have always been planning a second home birth and feel even better about it now. My midwife team visits me at home until birth and they bring all emergency drugs and oxygen for baby (as a just in case, to see us through before transferring if baby struggles).

Just listing this as things to consider. As someone anticipating baby in 70-85 ish days, I'm trying to prepare for what that might mean.

On the other side of this coin, let's all do a great job being socially distant and not have as hard of a time as Italy is now!!

  • @lilaros our governor issued an executive order banning all non essential visitors. At my hospital we are still allowing one support person for moms in labor as long as they are healthy, and it has to be the same person the entire time. Parents or guardians of minors or powers of attorney for those unable to make medical decisions are allowed. I would assume temperature checks at the doors are coming shortly. I am hoping this settles by June but share your fears.
  • I don't have the option of an out of hospital birth (even if I chose not to repeat C) due to my medical group's protocols for insulin managed diabetics. I find the visitor restrictions upsetting, but not necessarily surprising given the magnitude of what's happened worldwide so far. I'm in CA so my hope that we'll have flattened the curve/delayed the spread sufficiently to avoid this slim.

DH and I are talking through what this would mean if we were separated and our new baby had similar struggles to DS1 immediately after birth. How much would he want to know? Etc.

  • We have implemented a one visitor per person policy but the hospital down the street (where I am delivering) has a 2 person visitor policy currently but must be the same 2 the entire stay.  DH and I discussed it and he will of course be visitor 1 and DS 1 will be visitor 2 which we wont use till after DS 2 is born as long as they are still allowing children at that point.  I'm hopeful this will pass before Juneand that I hold out till the end of June, but I'm not holding breath.
  • @JessiBride I'm in San Francisco. Here's an article on it: https://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/article/SF-bans-hospital-vistors-including-family-15131949.php?fbclid=IwAR2I05yC6FjtBJrhSwAJnVR5f6iq2fXJiPU2uZgdGdVPlHIKNaUrZslMFdQ

We're socially distancing ourselves as best as possible right now. I'm hoping that if everyone does their part then this will not be an issue in June when we're all set to deliver. Fingers crossed!
  • @lilaros Thank you.  Ugh!  I hope this is done by June as well.  I'm in LA county.
  • I am more concerned about needing another c section. At this point, unless people really get their act together and stay the f home, who’s to say the hospital will have enough staff, enough IV fluids, enough anesthesia, to even perform this effectively? Ugh.

Completely fair fear. I'm hoping everyone stays the f home and we slow things down so that our hospitals DO have adequate staff and resources to take care of everyone that needs care whether it be a c section, vaginal birth, appendix, or corona virus.

  • @lilaros Thanks for sharing. I'm just south of you in San Mateo! I can't imagine doing this for the first time and being totally alone at the hospital.

This is my fear as well

It is likely that my birth classes will get cancelled. They're the middle three weeks in April. Does anyone have suggestions of good videos or books? I'm sure there are a ton and I don't know where to start.
  • @SpartanCat we are recommending the app Coffective
  • Pregnant women have been told to self isolate for 12 weeks in the UK... I mean I was already doing this but 12 weeks arghhhh

  • Everything I've read or heard says that virus isn't passed along in any of mom's fluids besides coughs/sneezes. China didn't know that for their babies so they did sections.

  • Bay area ladies...just saw the lockdown news.  Stay strong!
  • @SpartanCat we are recommending the app Coffective
    Thanks. I'll check it out.

If there are any other suggestions for good reference books or videos for preparing for birth, it would be appreciated.

  • Hey ladies...I'm a teacher and we are off for at least the next 2 weeks - good news is that we don't have to make up this time so it doesn't mess with my due date and the last day of school, but honestly, I'm not very optimistic we will go back in 2 weeks.

I failed the 1 hour glucose test on Wednesday last week and passed the 3 hour today.  It was annoying and uncomfortable (and nerve wracking because germs - but they had me isolated to my own area which was nice!).

We have a meeting with work via Zoom in the morning which should be interesting, and then we're expected to work on materials and post things for students by Thursday.  We have a 2 hour window to go into the building to get anything we might need.  My mind is racing with ideas and I can't seem to settle and think through what to do.  We aren't supposed to be providing any new content - just review.  So I guess mine will be mainly grammar based? So fun for students, right :P I'm planning on recording myself reading a chapter a day of a book as well for them to follow along with if they are interested.  It's the sequel to the book we read in Jan-Feb.

  • @diagonalley I am also a teacher out for at least the next two weeks. We have to provide work as well. My students are special needs so I am also struggling with what I can leave them that they will be able to complete independently. This is all extremely stressful, but I am trying to remain hopeful we will get through it. I love your idea of recording yourself reading!

I was going to provide my students with a short story and comprehension questions along with some figurative language sheets. I also teach math so going to do some basic skills like multiplication and integers and very simple algebra.

We will be in school until June 25th which happens to be my due date. It will be interesting to see how things play out... Especially since I have never made it to my due date with my two previous kids.
  • Things are only just starting to shut down around here (casinos, rec centres, etc as of today) and no changes to hospital policy. But after seeing family this weekend I’m low-key hoping they put limits on visitors and that they’re still in effect when baby comes. Everybody is insisting on being in the waiting room and barging in as soon as they’re allowed, even though I’ve stated multiple times that I don’t want that. It just sounds like less stress for me if hospital policies kept them away lol.
