Re: The Great Name Thread

  • @kbrown2385 - My look I give DH when he starts, "I'm just not feeling that name anymore."

  • I'm starting to go off Trent, and don't know how to tell to SO. I've just been pushing for back ups. I'm 0 for 2 on names I've picked for my kids. Both of them have come home with different names than I went to the hospital with. DD almost left with S, Infant Female and DS1 until the day I was discharged was S, S S Male. (My initials are SSS, to clarify some of that).

@marebear15 mh always looks at me confused and mentions how he thought we already decided. Naming ds was so easy. Why on earth is it so hard this time around??

  • @marebear15 too bad on Magnolia, you seemed so excited! But I really love Emilia. 😊

@kbrown2385 I adore Callan Theodore! I thought I wanted Theodore as a first name but MH vetoed it 😕

I've found there hardest part in choosing a name is finding one both parents like. So frustrating! We still have no clue 😖
  • @peppyj9 - I think Emilia just got thrown out the window. Today he's on to Adriana 🤪

@kbrown2385 - Naming DD was fairly easy too. Before my anatomy scan at 18 weeks we already had a boy name and a girl name picked out, FN and MN. Now I just want a FN before she's born!
  • @marebear15 @kbrown2385 We had the same thing, where it was easy to come up with a FN with DD. This time, it's taking so much longer to find even a handful that we're meh/okay on. I don't know if we're just avoiding talking about it this time or not.
  • I'm torn because I found out I'm having a girl and I had tons of boy names I loved, but no girl names. I'm thinking maybe Charlotte or Claire.
  • DH just brought up another girl name: Eileen. It has some family ties for both of us and means "light," which is fitting for our rainbow baby. I'm just afraid it's too old-fashioned sounding. What do y'all think?
  • @marebear15 I like it but also does sound a bit older, another option could be Eleanor which also means bright and shinning. Actually my co-worker gave that name to their daughter after suffering through many MC's. The nickname is Ellie which would also work for your name :)
  • @marebear15 I like Eileen and I don't think it sounds old fashioned. But, in general, I prefer the older, classic names anyway. And I love the idea of Ellie as a nickname like @c1kc1kpol1cn1k suggested
  • I still have no name yet.  Not even close. MH and I benched it for a while because we couldn't agree but we have to start going through names again or else he's going to just be "baby boy"
  • @peppyj9, we're struggling, too. We come up with a name we both like and one of us will go off it a few days later. I joked with him that if we don't come up with something  we're going to end up with S, S Infant Male as his name.
  • @marebear15 I like that too now! I think that work's with the nicknames as welll

@FyreFlyeRush @peppyj9 also struggling here on names / not thinking about it, I think we will need to start writing some down now and really considering what we like or don't like
  • LOL, we wrote them on a wall that we're either going to paint or wallpaper over. Most recent is Kaiden Xavier
  • @marebear15 - I like Eileen!

@peppyj9 - we are really struggling with boys names.   We decided to stop talking about it, but then we can't stop.

My dad was Stephen Charles, and our girls all have Italian names (because my H's family is Italian), so we are thinking maybe Stefano Charles.  I love the meaning, because I adore and miss my dad, but I am not in love with the name. It's growing on me though.

And H and my kids love Enrico, after a famous Italian physicist.  I don't love it.

  • @MollySm Charles = Carlo, would that be interesting?
  • @marebear15 love Eileen!! Was actually just looking at it today as a possibility for my baby girl! Except like a few of you, it’s looking like “baby girl” will be her name because my hubs and I can’t agree in anything 😂

Well, DH nixed Eileen, because he said if he can't have Marylyn as the middle name (which I vetoed), he didn't want Eileen. So we are back to Baby Sister as a name.

Edit for explanation: Eileen and Marylyn were two women who were influential in his mom's life. I didn't realize we couldn't do one without the other. And I don't like Marylyn because it's too close to my real name.
  • @FyreFlyeRush Love the name Kaiden Xavier!  And the spelling with the "K" instead of the usual "C"

@MollySm While I love the idea, I can't help but associate Stefano with a main character on Days of Our Lives for like 25 years LOL.  I haven't seen that show in ages but it was the first thing that popped into my head.
  • @marebear15 Any chance DH could do a modification of Marylyn like maybe Lynn?
  • @kbrown2385 such a good strong name!
  • @kbrown2385 - I love Nicholas! I love how you can make it more boyish with Nick and then grow it up with the longer version.
  • @DalexRN - Ha!  I am having that problem with Stefano too!  And my college roommate said the same thing.  We used to watch Days on occasion in college.  I cannot imagine most people have that association though, so I am trying to look past it...

  • @kbrown2385 Nicholas is a great name and I like Callan a lot too! 😊
  • @kbrown2385 that's a great name! One down, one to go!

I thought we had a name figured out and last night DH changed his mind. We had it narrowed down to two and now he likes the other one better. The problem is, he really doesn't like the potential nicknames. We're struggling with picking a name that doesn't have any nicknames or dealing with the struggle of correcting everyone who shortens the name. Sigh.
  • Is it a rule that the last letter of a first name and the first letter of a last name shouldn't be the same? Or does it depend on the letter? Or am I making this up? hahaha I was looking up names etc and this "rule" came up.
  • @c1kc1kpol1cn1k - I think I depends on the letter/sound. Sarah Sanders or Cecily Sanders might sound weird. But Daniel Dune sounds perfectly fine.
  • @marebear15 very true but I mean more like the last letter of a name with the first letter of a last name. So like pretend name is Nate last name starts with E, or name is Derek, last name starts with K
  • @c1kc1kpol1cn1k I would think that if the first name ends with a sound and the last name starts with that same sound, it might be hard to say/hear clearly since the sound is repeated between the two names (e.g., Sara Adams)  I don't really find it that problematic, though.
  • @cats_in_a_window very true, I'm thinking if it ends/starts in a vowel it might sound hard and get lost like you said, if its with a consonant then it could be ok

@c1kc1kpol1cn1k, I think it just depends on the names. Some dont' go together at all...some do. My niece's name ends with an A and her last name starts with an A. It goes fine. As far as alliteration goes, my intials are SSS, and the only problem I've had with it is IF I opt to change my name when I marry, it's going to sound a little weird: SST. EDIT - Of course that's not as weird as when my Ex suggested we should marry and it was going to become SM...as in S&M

My goal is to take at least 4 names to the hospital with us. I've learned you've GOT to have flixibility. DS1 was supposed to be Henry Morgan, then it was supposed to be James Henry...but once he was born, he looked a lot like a Henry James. With DD, her name was something androgynous I'd come up with because we were team Green. I went to the hospital with Mystery Dawn and Jason Edward picked out for names. She came home with Jordan Summer. So, yeah...flexibility.

DS1 came into the bedroom yesterday and asked us if we could name the baby Dean Winchester. Much to my shock and surprise, SO agreed to it, fully knowing the reason is Supernatural! I'm not sure what to think or say, but I love the idea of DS1 naming DS2. DD named DS1, and I named MY sister.
  • @c1kc1kpol1cn1k - Oh sorry, my reading comprehension is lacking this morning 🤦 I think it really depends on the names, both of them. Some don't sound bad, others just sort of mush into one word.
  • @FyreFlyeRush so true, we had a couple girls name's picked and went with something that was not the top 2 since DD looked like that name would fit her best. If it was a boy I would have been in trouble since we really had no idea haha. That's a nice tradition on having the sibling pick the name. I wish DD was old enough to contribute but she doesn't understand names yet, she just says the name can be brother or sister...great haha.

@marebear15 no problem! But agree with you, it depends on the names and the sounds so they don't mush
  • @c1kc1kpol1cn1k I agree with everyone else, it really depends on the names.
