The Great Name Thread

Re: The Great Name Thread

  • When you read name Marin does it sound male or female? For me the female version would be Marina but interested to hear your thoughts since different cultures and perspectives :)
Marin sounds masculine to me.  I do know a female Marinna, so that's probably why.

I feel the need to jump in here. Hubby and I have been debating between Kyra and Kinsley but we couldn’t decide which one and there was always something holding me back. I’ve fallen in love with a new name and like @biolprof and @catsinawindow am loving Wren. Still trying to get hubby all in, but do you think Wren goes with DD McKenna? This baby is an unexpected rainbow and I’ve always felt she was sent here by her brother, so the image of a tiny beautiful bird flying down from heaven comes to my mind. Her brothers name Carson will be her middle name. Thoughts?
Wow, what are the chances that 3 people in this BMB are all considering the same, relatively uncommon name?

Is McKenna the first or last name?  Either way, I think it works.  McKenna sounds Irish/Scottish and Wren is an old English name, so same geographic origins.  My DS and DD also have names that sound Irish/Scottish (they are rare enough that I don't want to share them) and their last name is also from that area, which I like that they all match.
  • @catsinawindow McKenna is her first name
  • @DalexRN the idea of the name Wren Carson is so special especially since this is your rainbow. I believe the imagery and nod to her brother is beautiful. Also the name is much more unique than Kinsley and Kira. Beautiful names!

Thanks all for the input on Marin! In my culture we're just used to all girl names ending in an A haha.

Struggling with naming this child! We have a Brody Charles, Jack Louis and Rosalie (Rosie) Jane already and are team green again. I love Maxwell for a boy but the only middle name I love is John - the hang up being that it’s my FIL’s middle name and he is not a person that I would have as my child’s namesake. We have a strained relationship but my husband has a less strained relationship. The rest of our kids middle names are family names so do you think I should just bite the bullet and go with it anyway since it flows so nicely?
  • @DalexRN I love Wren Carson. It’s beautiful. Carson is on our list for girl names.
  • @kbrown2385 I never knew Carson was a unisex name until I started telling people that would be this baby’s middle name and several people commented they knew female Carson’s. Love that you’re considering it for your girl 💕
  • Short list of boy names so far:
    Declan
    James
    Bennett

I think I am leaning towards Declan James

The only consistency with our naming is SO cannot come up with anything even semi normal, and trashes anything that doesn't sound ridiculous. It's a good thing we still have 20+ weeks, or this could get ugly.

I'd like something classic and solid, he seems to want something weird. DS1 is Henry James.
  • @DalexRN Wren Carson is beautiful and has such a lovely story.

@leprechaunlady lovely names. If it helps I'm on the Jack side in case you need support for hubby.

@FyreFlyeRush naming is hard. It's amazing how heated it can get over something so simple.

@jaceru Declan is really making a comeback. It's a cool name!

@crf4 the politicing of names is so challenging. Maybe something one syllable like John but not John if that makes you uncomfortable? Don? Lane? Jim? James? Just spitballing names.
  • @biolprof

Thanks! We have had this name in mind for a while and now its getting popular, but I don't really mind that. I have been trying to think of others and just keep coming back to it.

Our daughter is Ella Catherine and I like how they sound together too.
  • Anyone else's mom or mil trying to claim the middle name? My mom has repeatedly, and in front of people, said that the middle name should be Anne since my middle name is her mother's. I don't hate Jean Anne; it's pretty. But I really don't want to set the precedent that she has control over what we do with baby girl.

Husband and I are really into Jean Olivia right now. Olive is our dog, so we thought it was kind of cute.
  • @alisonreif2 I'd shut that down right away.  Maybe it's because I don't have a good relationship with my mom, and my MIL drives me nuts, but there's no way in hell I'd be allowing them suggestions.  Our baby, our choice.

I tend to agree with @kbrown2385 - I don't tell people the names we're discussing because I don't want to hear other people's opinions and why "oh my god I'd never name a baby that" or "I knew a [name] and they were blah blah blah."  Thanks, it's hard enough for us to settle on a name and I don't need others opinions ruining a name for me.  We announce the name at birth because at that point when it's attached to a child we won't hear any feedback on why so & so hates the name. 🤷‍♀️
  • Our boy has had a name for the past 7 years (the time it's taken us to conceive). This is my second marriage and I have three kids from my first. All our other kids have namesakes for my family so I told my husband that I wanted to name our first baby together after his grandparents. He will be Oskar Barie Jens, after his paternal grandfather, maternal grandfather, and then my husband's name is thrown in there as tradition (his middle name is his father's first name). It's going to be a mouthful when he's in trouble but I love keeping family names alive. He'll likely be OB for short which is fitting because he was conceived around Star Wars day ;)
  • Thanks for the advice, @kbrown2385 and @valerie4786
  • We're currently leaning toward Trent for a first name. And we're looking for N middle names. We have SOs middle name right now (which I love), but his initials would be TNT if we change it. I also wanted to throw out a Final Fantasy character name, but SO said no to Snow and Cloud. So, I snuck in Noctis. Trent Noctis T.

The name meaning is definitely unique: Torrent of Night Tower of White. So...Night Torrent of the White Tower? It sounds like something out of a Dark Fantasy novel.
  • @FyreFlyeRush I can totally see how TNT seems like an awesome initials set! I am not so good with the character references but if your SO vetos then there are lots of good N names I think. I like Nolan off the top of my head.
  • @MrsJessS - I love it! That was one of the first names DH vetoed 😂
  • Beautiful name!
  • We are having a girl name Liliana Isolde, we could not agree on a boys name
  • @marebear15 I’m still shocked DH likes it. I think he is too 😂
  • Only name the hubs loves is Nora Rose but I’m so in love with either Emersyn Rose or Everleigh Rose

  • @cweiss04 are you okay with Nora Rose or is that a hard no for you?
  • Struggling to come up boys names. I'd like it to be traditional, multisyllabic, and not start with F (other initials would make it FML). Any ideas on where to start looking? We tried the Baby names app, but haven't found anything we really like with that.
  • @persnickity - We just found a list of the top 1000 girl names from last year on the Social Security website and started reading through it. Still hasn't helped us, but it may help you 🤷

AFM, my MIL suggested Amelia, but I like the Spanish/Italian spelling Emilia. Of course the first thing that came up when I googled it was Game of Thrones, but I've never seen that show. Any of you think it's too trendy because of GOT?
  • @marebear15 Thanks! I'll check the list out. I don't think it's too trendy, I haven't seen that spelling very often.
  • @marebear15 the name Emilia isnt actually a character in GoT but the name of an actress who plays a main character so i definitely wouldnt say its too trendy cause of that. For what it's worth, I really like it & think that it would be a way less trendy or popular option than Amelia.
  • @leprechaunlady - Ah okay, that makes me feel a little better that it's not a character just an actress. Looks like the name is ranked 60th in my state, so I think I'm okay with that. Amelia is 7th, and that's way too popular for me.
  • @marebear15 Emilia is a great name! That was one of the contender's for DD's name last time.

@kbrown2385 I like that :) I had someone in elementary/high school with that name, the shorter version was Cale
  • @kbrown2385 - Sadly, yes. DH's initial reaction waned, and now he decided he doesn't like it. We moved on to the name Virginia for a little while, and once again DH decided he didn't like it.
I love Theodore!! And I don't think it's a mouthful. DD's first and middle names together have 7 syllables, and we also have a one syllable last name. Callan Theodore is only 5 syllables.
  • @c1kc1kpol1cn1k I’m not a nickname person so I’ll always call him Callan but I love Cale so much more than Cal.

@marebear15 I’m in the same boat as yh. I like it at first and then decide im not a fan after all. I’m sure mh is really enjoying my indecision lol. I’d use Theodore as a first name but I feel like Theo is so popular and I try to stay away from that.
  • @kbrown2385 - I think Callan Theodore flows nicely!
