@rms924 it's funny you bring up varicose veins in your lady bits .... last appointment I ask my dr if it's normal to be swollen down there and he told be all about varicose veins down there and it sounds scary... luckily for me he thinks I am just swollen from the pressure of sitting for along periods of time he told me to get up and move around through out the day and that has seemed to help my situation not sure if it would help for varicose veins.

@kdl89 It's sort of disturbing, I won't lie. I am glad that this area is covered up...that's all I will say! Unfortunately, being on my feet/being active makes it a lot worse...!

@rms924 ... I hope you find some sort of relief.
  • Moms with kids already...curious what time your littles go to bed. My almost 5 year old will stay up all night and lately my 2 year old stays up until 9...mind you neither one naps anymore.

@supermom34482 we start DS’ bedtime routine at 6:45ish and he’s usually asleep by 7:15. He still naps almost every day.

    ETA he’s 2.5

  • @supermom34482 DS is 3 and we are laying in bed by 8 watching tv and he is usually asleep by 8:30.
  • @supermom34482 if you asked me 3-4 weeks ago, I’d have said we start bedtime around 6:30-7 with our 2 year old and he’s asleep by 7:30. As of lately, he refuses to go to sleep until like 8:30-9 and is waking up in the middle of the night and ending up in our bed and everything is a hot mess! He still takes approximately a 2 hour nap at school.

  • @supermom34482 During the school year, we aim for lights out at 8/8:15. This doesn't fly in the summer when it's still light outside. We even have blackout curtains. So usually 9. Kids are turning 6 and 4 this month and no nappers here either.
  • @supermom34482 DS just turned 2 and is in bed and sleeping between 7 and 8 most nights. He still naps 1.5-3 hrs/day.
  • @supermom34482 DS is 21 months and usually goes to bed between 8:30 and 9:30p, depending mostly on when DH gets home from work - he does still take a 1.5-3 hour nap during the day.
  • My daughter has been sleeping through the night since she was 2 months old. She is 14 months now. She is usually asleep by 8-8:30. She takes at least 1 nap a day anywhere from 1-3 hrs. Sometimes a second nap as well.
  • This is the 2nd time tonight that I have been woken up out of a dead sleep with leg cramps. It started happening about a week ago and it's always in my right leg. I also almost always sleep on my right side, even if I fall asleep on my left. The sharp pain almost feels like someone is squeezing it with all their might and wakes me from a dead sleep. It goes away within seconds and standing usually helps.
I researched blood clots but I'm not convinced it's that since this is always in my sleep..

Any ideas on what this is, if it's something to worry about, and what I can do about it??
  • @nightdreamr13 sounds like what is referred to as a “Charley horse” and they’re totally awful!!! A couple things to try or look into: stretch before bed, drink tons of water through the day and ensure you aren’t dehydrated, and check that you’re getting enough magnesium and potassium!

  • @nightdreamr13 unfortunately they are yet another wonderful byproduct of pregnancy. I get them often too. Mine are from flexing my foot just so, so you may be doing that in your sleep and then the cramp wakes you up. They are no fun though. Sorry!

  • @zuuls_mom @sunshine2417 thanks. I can deal, just wanted to make sure it was nothing serious:)
  • OTC meds question for you ladies. Is there any cough syrup or pill that’s safe to take? My cold has developed into a terrible cough and I’m still waiting to hear back from my OB. An expectorant would be great, but a suppressant would be okay too. Also my throat is killing me. I’ve tried natural remedies, but nothing is working. Thanks!
  • @nightdreamr13 Flex your foot and pull back on your toes until the cramp goes away! I did gymnastics and acrobatics for years and that was a trick we were always taught. It’s the only thing that gives me any relief when a Charlie horse pops up.

@themadcamel there might be other options, but I had luck with Tylenol cold!
  • @themadcamel this is the sheet my OB prints out for us. If you’re viewing on mobile, you may need to scroll to the right to see it. I used the Mucinex back in February/March, but just make sure you look at the active ingredients that are approved as I think there’s one Mucinex that is okay and one that’s not.

  • @supermom34482 mine are 7&6.  We start bedtime routine at 8, usually lights out by 8:30 and lately we are yelling to go sleep up until about 9.
  • I have a question about Thyroid during pregnancy. Before I got pregnant my thyroid had been fine, but in my most recent bloodwork my thyroid levels were 1 point outside the normal range they like to see in the second and third trimester. Has anyone had this happen? Did you get on medication for it? Did it normalize again after pregnancy?

Also, it was my family doctor who ordered that blood test and it happened just before I switched over my care to my midwife. So the results were sent to my family doctor and then my midwife was able to get them online. My doctor did not call me to let me know that my levels were elevated. The only reason I know is because I asked my midwife because I knew we had tested for it. So I'm a bit peeved. Does that mean it doesn't really matter? Should I be taking this seriously? My midwife cannot prescribe the thyroid medication so she suggested I make an appointment with my family doc. But I am not happy with her and don't want to go see her.

Any advice STM's or people in the medical field?

  • @kaceyallan Was your thyroid fine in the first trimester? Typically what you see is needing a thyroid adjustment during weeks 1-20, and as your hormones level out in the ladder half of pregnancy, your need for TSH is less. Are you feeling symptoms of a thyroid deficiency? (Cold hands/feet, exhaustion, dry skin, constipated?) If so, I would see an endocrinologist, not a family doctor for treatment. They manage thyroid numbers much closer than a family doctor would. Do you mind sharing your number? If it's over a 3, I would consider that concerning. But then again, I'm not a doctor. I started thyroid meds before I got pregnant. They might not want to start you on the meds while pregnant unless they have to. At MINIMUM, he should be checking the number again in 4 weeks.

  • @nomangos23 Thank you. My levels did come up high in the first tri. I was put on meds and told we'd reevaluate in the second tri. (This was all done by a different doctor when I went in for abdominal pain who looked over my chart, again my actual family doc never brought it up when she had the results) I ended up stopping the meds because I got so nauseous I couldn't swallow the pills, and never started up again. So I had asked to check my levels again to see if I needed to get back on them. This is where we are at now.

I am exhausted (but aren't we all?) and slightly constipated (but I typically manage 1 bowl movement a day). My number was a 4. Maybe I will try to see a different doctor next week and go from there. Maybe a naturopath can help?

  • @kaceyallan In my opinion, thyroid function, especially during pregnancy, isn't something I'd mess around with. Don't google the potential issues, I don't want to scare you, and I don't want you to think this will be the case for you, but yes, if you're at a 4 you should be treating during pregnancy. An endocrinologist would have you on medication for sure.

There are basically two types you can take but synthroid is what's recommended during pregnancy over the other kind (Amour thyroid). To hear they made you nauseated is surprising. Could that have been morning sickness? I had no symptoms other than the relief of my thyroid symptoms. Did they start you out @ 25 mcg?

For me, exhaustion related to thyroid disfunction was way more severe than exhaustion related to pregnancy. Although you're in the second 1/2 now, you shouldn't be as tired as you were in the first tri - it's so hard to tell because pregnancy affects everyone differently.
  • @kaceyallan Ditto to everything @nomangos23 said and just chiming in to say that a general practitioner's definition of "high" is not always the same as an endocrinologist's.  When mine was tested at my GP, she considered the level "not clinically significant for treatment" at 4.34 and my RE was like... whoa Nelly, let's get you on 50mcg of Levothyroxine (Synthroid).  Definitely better to go see the specialist!!
  • @nomangos23 @RedBreast35 Thank you! I didn't know if I should take this seriously. And now I am even more pissed that my doc has done nothing about this and the only reason I got tested again and know my results is because I had to ask for it. Is it true that once you start taking thyroid medication that you can never go off of it?

Also, for the record, @nomangos23 the thyroid medication I was on wasn't making me nauseous. It was just morning sickness, but because of it I couldn't get pills down without throwing up. So I stopped taking everything, even prenatals, for a few weeks. I was on 0.025MG  of LEVOTHYROXINE.

@kaceyallan all of the ladies have wonderful advice. Just want to add one more consideration: ask your dr about what could potentially happen w your levels post partum. I had ppd and it was a beast to kick. Just wondering if you do go on meds now, whether that might protect you in the pp time when hormones are wonky. Worth asking about imho :)

ps. If you were my sister, id recommend leaving that family dr. Thyroid stuff shouldn’t be handled lightly. Wishing you best of luck!!!

  • @kaceyallan you've gotten some great advice! I was always "borderline" before my last pregnancy, but then my levels increased so I got put on 25mcg and then eventually 50mcg of Levothyroxine. I get repeat blood work every 6ish weeks to make sure it's not fluctuating too much. I'm not sure if I'll need to stay on this after my pregnancy, but it won't surprise me if I do. Both my mom and grandma both have to take Synthroid every day and have for years. Definitely get it checked again just to be safe!

  • @kaceyallan It depends - you may just need to supplement your thyroid level during pregnancy. If it goes back into an acceptable range after you have the baby and you have no symptoms, there's no reason to be on the medication anymore. However, that's most often not the case. I know the idea of staying on a medication the rest of your life is not ideal but for me, the benefits of being on the medication FAR outweigh the symptoms when I'm not on meds. Plus one of the biggest symptoms is a slowed down metabolism. Psh, get out of here with that. NO THANK U
  • @rms924 I definitely want to switch to a new doctor once I am past this pregnancy and my midwife no longer handles me. The clinic I go to offers walk in during the day to their patients. I am hoping to go in next week on a day that the doctor I'd like to switch to is seeing the walk in patients and ask her directly if I can switch to her. And get a referral to an endocrinologist.

@nomangos23 @zuuls_mom @RedBreast35 @rms924 Thank you so much for all of the great advice!  <3

  • @kaceyallan Agreed with everyone else. I went to a regular doc before getting pregnant with DS and they told me thyroid was all good (3.6). Sigh. I didn't have symptoms but I did have a breech baby. There are studies linking breech to low thyroid. Also may have not helped my milk production issues. My new doc got me on NP Thyroid (non synthetic) and levels are great now. Are they testing your free T3 and free T4 too? Make sure they do that. Those are the actual thyroid numbers although it was the TSH linked to breech. It just raises the odds a little but better safe than sorry. If synthetic isn't agreeing maybe try something like Armour or NP Thyroid. I know some docs won't though at all and more won't during pregnancy just because. Maybe after? It has t3 and t4. I needed just a boost of both.

  • Is anyone else using a Belly Bandit or belly support of any kind?
  • @cheshyre319 I was actually starting to look into kinesio-tape this morning as I’ve heard great things!

  • @sunshine2417 I normally would use KT tape, but my skin was so itchy after and getting it back off was... difficult
  • @cheshyre319 I bought a support band that I think @RedBreast35 Recommend about a month ago. It’s ok but I’m not really using it much yet because it makes my belly look funny. Vain, party of one. Lol. This kid is so high in my abdomen that the sport down lower wasn’t really helping yet.
  • @calliah I usually start with them high in the morning and by midday they are much lower and my back is killing me. I picked one up and am loving it so far! Now to just convince them that my ribs aren't monkey bars! 😆
  • Is the one hour glucose fasting or non fasting? You would think I would remember and google is giving me mixed answers.

@mommyshark13 I know this doesn’t help, but I think it depends on your office how they do it! 🤷🏼‍♀️

    eta mine had me fasting
  • kdl89kdl89 member
@mommyshark13 ... I agree with @redbreast35 it all depends on your dr office.
I was allowed to have a light breakfast an hour before I drank the juice but is seem like every dr is different.
  • @mommyshark13 My doctor said I did not have to fast but to avoid a carby breakfast before I went. Eggs it is, then.
