The Great Question Thread!

Re: The Great Question Thread!

  • I’ve gained about 12 lbs. and I’m in week 24. Seems to be on track with what I’ve found on Dr. Google, and my OB hasn’t said anything (good or bad) about my weight at any of my appointments.

I don’t even know how much I’ve really gained. My OB appointments are all late afternoon after eating and working all day, so obviously heavier than I would be in the morning. And they are using a weight that was 10 pounds heavier than when I got pregnant since I lost about 10 pounds between that appointment and getting pregnant. I might be up 10? I’m not really keeping track.

With mt first, I lost 15 pounds the first 20 weeks. Then gained that back plus 15, so a net gain of 15. I was hoping that would happen this time but it did not. I weirdly had more of an appetite this time.
  • @kgg2241Same. I have no idea where it's all coming from. I'm active more often than I was pre-pregnancy and don't feel like I've changed my eating habits too much. Maybe we're making 10 pounders? (God, I hope not)
  • I have gained 16 pounds and am 23 weeks. This is baby 3. I gained 30 pounds with DS born at 37 weeks and 25 with DD born at 39+5. It definitely seems like I am gaining more and faster this time but my OB wasnt worried. Honestly I'm not over eating and am still active so it is was it is at this point.

I have gained 9lb so far at 24 weeks + .... with my daughter I gained 17 in total ... with both pregnancies I was told by the dr I should gain anymore then 20lb based on my BMI.
  • As of two days ago I'd gained 14 lbs so far (around 24 weeks), but this morning that was up by 2 lbs. At my previous appointments they've mentioned that my weight gain is on track, but not sure what they'll have to say about it next week (if anything). With DS they never really mentioned it, and I think so far my gain has been similar.

I'm up about 10-12lbs at 24 weeks. They have never mentioned anything about my weight at my appointments so have just been assuming I am on track
  • @kiddiesandkitties we have done that with our two kids and plan on doing it again for the third (keeping baby in the Halo in our room for 6 months.) It has worked out well!
  • Does anyone have 2nd trimester insomnia and solutions?

I’m exhausted 24/7, I fall asleep super easily, but I’m trying to wean myself off of the Unisom+B6 combo for morning sickness to see if I’ll survive without it. After my 1am pee break, I can’t seem to fall back asleep until just before it’s time to wake up for work! I don’t want to stay on the Unisom... but I will if it means sleep lol

  • Any second or third time moms out there have advice on hire the are transitioning or did transition a toddler to their "big kid" room? We're keeping all the nursery as is for new baby.  I'm worried about my daughter being upset about leaving her stuff. She loves horses, unicorns, zebras and donkeys so im thinking an equine themed room. This also lets me bring a couple zebra objects from her safari themed nursery. Just don't know how to go about finessing the whole situation.
  • @KaraMG35 my 2 cents is that you have to discuss with your daughter and do what is needed for your situation. Do you have to leave everything the same? Personally if she was attached to some of the nursery items I'd let her take them with her or it might make the transition really rough. Some kids might not care though.  The baby won't care what is in the room.
  • @KaraMG35 maybe take her shopping and let her pick out her new bedding and decor, stress the fact that she’s a big girl now and gets a new way cooler big girl room.

I have no idea how much I have gained so far.  At last appt @ 20 weeks, I was up 15lbs.  For my 1st I gained 35 lbs and my 2nd I gained 50lbs.  My Dr never said anything about my weight gain for either pregnancies.  I would rather not gain 50 again but I know I have lost it before so I am not too worried.  I know it's not everyones experience, but I dropped weight quickly breastfeeding.
  • @KaraMG35 is it possible to get her to look at it as her giving her baby room to her new sibling rather than it being taken from her?
  • I know I asked, so I wanted to reassure too. I think everyone's weight gain is perfect! I love seeing the broad range and it really does just depend on our bodies. I am naturally thin, but I get a big huge belly when pregnant apparently.

Pregnancy insomnia: Here's all that works for me: A warm shower until I feel sleepy then straight into bed. Cereal, pacing our loft.

  • @sunshine2417 I don't have advice for insomnia other than unisom but I wanted to say you are not alone sister.  I have had it bad all pregnancy.  Like if I don't take unisom, I am up for 5 hours in the middle of the night.
  • I was up from 1 to 4 last night...just laying there wide awake. Does unisom make you sleepy or help you sleep or both?
  • I am down 7 pounds but honestly I started overweight so I had some to lose. This happened with my first as well. I ended up minus 9 with him. When I get pregnant I eat healthy, cut out soda and caffeine, and work on extra movement. If only I could do this when non-pregnant!

  • @supermom34482 Unisom makes me feel drowsy and then pretty much keeps me asleep. I only take it if I know I can get at least 8 hours in because I wake up too groggy otherwise. It might be different for you, but I’m really sensitive to medications like that.
  • @cateyes543 It does give big motivation to cut out cheat days at like a Birthday party and stuff!
  • @supermom34482 I take unisom around 8:30 but it doesn't make me fall asleep.  It does help me fall back to sleep quickly when I wake in the middle of the night though. And like @themadcamel I only take if I can get a  full 8 hours of sleep or else I pretty useless for majority of the next day.
  • I was awake from about 2:45 am to probably about 4am. While awake I was thinking maybe we should create an insomnia thread. That way we can post the strange thoughts running through our heads. I was reading other posts while trying to fall back to sleep.
  • @taeleigh -As I sit here at 3:45am I feel the same thing! Up since 2am and just want to sleep but here we are!

  • @supermom34482 same to what everyone else said. I usually take the Unisom around 8:30 and wake up for the day at 5:30. The Unisom honestly just ensures that when I wake up for the MOTN pee sessions, I can fall right back asleep! And the combo with the B6 was helping my morning sickness lol I highly recommend it if anyone is struggling with this as it is safe for pregnancy and doesn’t leave me feeling the awful the next day as long as I get at least 8 hours of sleep!

  • Has anyone been told their baby is currently breech? I can’t remember with DS and I just read it on the AS followup report. Everyone who has asked acts like it’s the end of the world. Isn’t it a little early to be concerned about breech?
  • @duewithpu2 this baby was not breech as of AS (however, I have a heavy intuition that she is now or will be)... but it has happened to me in the past.  DD2 was breech (at AS - and no one mentioned it to me at that point) and she remained breech thru 36 weeks when we did an external version.  However, the reason that no one said anything (to me, or you!) and you're just seeing it on the report is because it is SO early to be concerned.  Baby is still small and has plenty of room to flip and grow.  They don't worry about it or even note it as a concern till later on.
  • @duewithpu2 Way too early to be worrying about breech. Like @kiddiesandkitties said baby has SO much room to flip and turn right now.

@kiddiesandkitties I’m curious - did the external version thing hurt as much as “they” say it does? (Also I prefer calling it a flippy turny thing 😜)
  • Thanks ladies! Thats what I thought! I’m also curious about the “floppy turny thing” pain level!
  • Also, I think that it's almost impossible to do with an anterior placenta. Or is that not true?
  • My first born was breach and turned on is own way into the 3rd trimester. definitely don’t worry about that right now!
  • My.2nd was breech until 34 weeks, no need to even give it a second thought at this point.
  • @duewithpu2 @lillywonderland I did not think it was NEARLY as awful as I mentally prepared myself for. It was definitely uncomfortable, the type that makes you hold your breath in hopes that it’ll make it stop, but honestly only took about 5-10 minutes and was more stressful and weird than anything. They press HARD on your stomach. So much so that you feel like they’re doing damage. Which is nerve wracking. But it was successful and we had a smooth vaginal delivery 2 weeks later!

One fun fact I learned while I was there and found interesting: after they do the flippy, if determined, baby can flip back, especially if they are comfortable head-up and prefer that position, and even more likely if baby is small. However! The doctor said that if the initial flip was successful, the rate of having ‘additional successful flips’ if baby turned again was 100%! Once they’ve flipped with success once, they can pretty much guarantee that they can flip them back if needed, even in labor!
  • it seems a few other people have had concerns, but with my scenario I haven't been able to find anyone who's gone through the same thing.... so here I am asking 😂
Im 18, a FTM, am 22wk4d (ish), and have lost about 35 lbs since the start of my pregnancy. I had really bad morning sickness, and have had trouble getting access to better food, and didn't see an OB until last week. (nobody would take me 😟). but i've been eating well since about 18 weeks, and still don't have much of a bump at all. I started at 201lbs pre pregnancy, but i'm 5'9" with a bigger frame so while i was overweight, it wasn't drastically so. At my last prenatal appointment, I weighed in at 168.4. The week before that, I was 172. My doctors aren't the best, but they don't seem concerned at all, but i'm still losing a lot of weight. I want to switch honestly, he neglects to tell me much of anything (which led to me being in the ER with what was apparently an expected side effect of a procedure he didn't even tell me he was doing!). I'm just frustrated and sad seeing other moms with beautiful bellies at 22wk, and i don't have one at all! i'm not normally one to complain about weight loss 😉 but it seems like i shouldn't still be losing weight. the baby measured fine, and he's still kicking and moving around. my original EDD was oct. 1st based on my cycle and ultrasound i'd had done at a pregnancy center at 8 weeks, but the OB said sept. 28th based on how the baby is measuring now. I'm taking it with a grain of salt, since apparently the due date isn't as accurate (on top of already kinda guessing) when measured this late in the pregnancy. idk. does anyone have any advice? been through a similar circumstance?
  • @alaynacogs hi, and welcome! Thanks for taking time to introduce yourself and read up on how the board is organized. 🙂

I think a doctor, preferably an obstetrician, would be the best person to answer your question. I don’t have any personal experience and I’m also a FTM, so I don’t have much solid advice for you. I do know that weight gain is different from pregnancy to pregnancy, even in the same person. It sounds like your baby is healthy as far as your doctor could tell, but maybe you could get a second opinion if you’re not comfortable with your current caretakers. As far as losing weight due to morning sickness, that happened to me too. Now that I’m feeling better, I’ve been trying to get more calories in. Even if you can’t get the best quality food, getting enough calories is important. Have you tried nutritional shakes like Ensure? There are a lot of vitamins in those drinks as well.

Here’s a link to an article about weight gain during pregnancy: https://americanpregnancy.org/pregnancy-health/eating-for-two/

I hope you get some reassurance soon. Pregnancy can definitely be a crazy and uncertain journey at times!
  • @alaynacogs hi! I’m so sorry your pregnancy has been stressful and filled with so much sickness. I’m also so sorry to hear you weren’t able to get any prenatal care for so long! Glad you are now and that things look ok. I lose a bit of weight with my son due to morning sickness, but once I wasn’t sick anymore and had more of an appetite it definitely piled back on. I do know some people who lost weight their entire pregnancy though! As long as you and baby are healthy, that’s all that matters! Definitely speak with your OB if you’re unsure though.

@duewithpu2 way too early to worry about being breech. Baby can flip to head down then back to breech in the span of minutes right now.
As far as the external version, I’ve never had one but I’ve participated in a few at work and they do not look comfortable. Less pain than labor but still pretty painful. I don’t plan on putting myself though one if baby is breech come D-day

@alaynacogs I'm sorry you're struggling to get proper care. I agree that you should get another opinion if at all possible. I had a friend who was losing weight throughout her pregnancy and at a certain point her doctor became concerned. Are you in the US? Could you get some assistance in accessing more nutritional food?
  • rms924rms924 member
@MsBeachNJ I thought I was the only one! I am a ttm. My first, I think I gained 75 (lost it all) and my second, I gained 60 (lost it all plus 5lbs).   I am 26 weeks and I’ve put on 40 lbs so far 🙄. I start out pretty small - but I asked my dr and he told me he “doesn’t care.”  I love him for that.

Though, I do feel like I am in an alien body...that said, I only drop the weight once I stop bf. It’s actually fascinating - I had a friend who gained 15lbs while pregnant and she was super slim. I’ve had friends who gained just as much as me and they dropped every pound. I’ve had friends who didn’t gain an ounce but put on 30lbs while bf.  Everyone really is diff.

Here’s my question: anyone struggling w varicose veins in your lady bits? I remember talking to someone about this? What did you do? It’s kind of uncomfortable 😣. Sorry for scarring anyone out there!!
