@mommyshark13 I am also confused and my office went over it at least 3x!  I am left believing that I shouldn’t eat anywhere in the 2hrs prior to the test. My test is tomorrow.

@mommyshark13 -It is NOT a fasting lab. It is meant to see how your body is working. That said, don’t have a huge meal of carbs and sugars going into the test because it can affect the reading. Just eat as you normally would and the results will be what they are!

@mommyshark13 it really depends on the office doing the test. Mine asked me to fast for 2 hrs before.

When should I stop taking public transit to work and start driving myself? Maybe this is pregnancy dependent and I could wait to see how 3rd tri goes? But is there a certain point that I should just not take it any more? (I should mention that my bus does not run all day, only during rush hour. If anything did happen in the middle of the day and I needed to get home I would be screwed.)

@LJMoon6 I would say days that you have doc appts, (so you can get away) then everyday after 35 weeks. Aside from the uncertainty of needing a ride somewhere in the middle of the day, is everything else okay with your public transit commute? Are you uncomfortable or anything?
  • Options

@LJMoon6 When are you going out on disability? TBH, I am okay with taking public transport everyday until I go out on leave at 36 wks (I take the train to work) because there’s always Uber. Lol. It may be expensive, but at least I’ll have a story to tell. I would just make sure you bring depends or have a few pads on you and a change of undies/pants just in case your water breaks.

    eta grammar.

@nomangos23 I love taking public transit. I hate that I'm going to have to drive myself. So far I've been lucky enough to schedule all my appointments on my days off (Fridays). I'm more just worried about an emergency situation happening where I would need to leave work asap. I guess I could always get MH or someone to come pick me up. Or like lillywonderland says, uber.
@lillywonderland Good suggestion on the change of clothes and depends. I would really like to keep taking it for as long as I can. I hate driving. I didn't know you could start disability early, unless it was doctor recommended? I was just planning on working until I go into labor. Bad idea? lol

@LJMoon6 I don't know how other states work, but here in CA you are allowed to start your disability at 36wks (no questions asked) for a normal pregnancy - anything earlier is rare and most doctors will need a really, really good reason for it. Look into it and ask your HR/Dr. Also, I would prefer not driving whilst in labor. Just sayin', lol!

  • Options
@lillywonderland Wait. So you can't drive in early labor? Is my FTM showing? I just assumed that in early labor the contractions aren't too bad and are spaced out far enough that I'd have time to drive myself home.

@LJMoon6 I mean...you totally can drive in labor...I just don’t want to!! My contractions weren’t that bad until they were, LOL. I just hate driving in general and really REALLY don’t want to have any distractions.
  • Options
@LJMoon6 I think it differs for every woman! I probably could have driven myself in for DS... my friend drove herself in for her first... but some women go from initial labor to popping out the baby in only a few short hours so I can imagine that wouldn’t be terribly fun! And your mind may not be in the most focused place for driving.

@lillywonderland so how does that work in terms of total disability and FMLA and such? I’ve learned from my remote coworkers in CA that you guys have special rules! Do you basically get 4 weeks disability from 36-40 weeks and then FMLA starts after baby is born (running concurrently with whatever you have left for disability and such)?

Does a mild case of heartburn feel like you ate some minty that's still trying to go down? I feel like I have a rock in my throat and that my esophagus is minty. Is that heartburn?
  • Options
@nomangos23 yes that sounds similar. Heartburn for me isn’t unbearable. It kind of feels like my throat has a hot pepper in it.
  • Options
@nomangos23 I think that is likely heartburn. Heartburn can manifest in all sorts of ways and that definitely sounds like one of them.
  • Options
@sunshine2417 In California (in general if you’ve been at your employer for at least a year full time) we get pre-partum short term disability from 36wks - baby’s birth, then 6-8wks (still short term) disability after the birthing event, and then FMLA will kick in. Word on the street is that they are trying to pass legislation that would give us all 12wks FMLA at 100%. I doubt it’ll pass in time for me to use it tho. We currently get 6wks ~60% pay FMLA and the last 6wks are unpaid (if you choose to take them). The disability and FMLA (from the state) are capped at a certain $ amt so if you make the big bucks you won’t get exactly 60%.

@nomangos23 My heartburn felt like a lump in my throat and lots of burps.

Oh yeah, I had those leg cramps at week 25. Standing does help to relieve the pain. What i also thought was that i might be low on potassium. So i added bananas and apples to my diet and guess what? Its been two full weeks now and no more leg cramps😊!!
  • Options
@dorissmile I'll be adding those to the diet bc water doesn't seem to help. Drank so much before bed I woke up 2x to go to the br which I never ever do and still got leg cramps.

Is it safe to help paint the nursery? I didn't get special paint...just the normal ppg glidden stuff from home depot. I bought basic white masks to wear over my nose n mouth,  can open the window, and maybe put a rotating fan in there. Thoughts? DH has legit been doing so many home projects on his own and I'm trying to help but bending up n down to pick weeds outta the driveway cracks so he can fill them and reseal the driveway sounds like hell compared to painting...

Wasn't sure where to post this, so this thread seems like a good place. Maybe a future GTKY question. What are you planning/ have you in the past packed in your hospital bag?
  • Options
@nightdreamr13 My OB said it was fine to help paint the room as long as it was well ventilated (i.e. open windows and turn on fans). My mom, however, kicked me out of the room when she started rolling the paint on cause she's paranoid. I was able to help with the corners, edges, and fine detail on the mural tho. The fumes weren't too bad when the paint was more contained to the pail and my brush compared to when my mom started rolling. I think it's really up to you and what you're comfortable with.

@nightdreamr13 The regular white masks won't do anything for VOCs that I'm aware of. Just so your not wearing something annoying for no reason. The official answer is that it is fine, although I'm the person that special orders super non toxic paint and still won't paint while pregnant. Ask me sometime though about when DH used turpentine in the house without opening windows when I was pregnant with DS. I about killed him, luckily not 1st trimester.

@nightdreamr13 with my first I painted the nursery but I got the low fumes paint. That said, I am an asthmatic, so I am really sensitive to paint fumes. I can't even imagine weeding anything right now. All I want to do is sleep :)

@lillywonderland I would love to move to CA asap! Prepartum leave sounds heavenly!

@LJMoon6 I think I was literally in labor for 72 hrs w ds2 (I was induced with ds1)- I drove, shopped, worked. Right before I finally went to the hospital, I did a Target run and had lunch with ds1 and dh. It was manageable. Despite all that, I was only like 4cm dilated when I got to the hospital!! That was kind of a bummer lol. For 4-10 cm (6-7hrs), I was in the hospital and basically bouncing on a ball. That was my experience, at least.

@nightdreamr13 The short answer is yes, you are safe to paint. The long answer is a bit more convoluted. Most paints nowadays are inherently low in VOCs (volatile organic carbons) compared to ones from years ago. Adding that with the fact that we’re rounding into third tri (where all major organs have already been formed) you’re safe to paint. To reduce your inhalation risk, keep the windows open and if you have a fan, use it! You can also find masks online or in store that reduce inhalation of VOCs. The particulate masks (which is what most of those white masks are) will NOT do anything for vapors (which is what VOCs are).

@cammie0526 We need that one (hospital bag) and a breastfeeding one. I can order my pump now but am unsure if I should just order the same one that I got for DS.
  • Options
@cammie0526 @lillywonderland yes to both threads!! Although I’m starting to get nervous about “losing” all of our hot topic convos when we move to PG. Not that we can’t come back here to reference. Maybe we should wait until PG opens? It should be later this week I would think.
  • Options
@nomangos23 great point! I agree on waiting til PG to get those two threads going. They’ll be chock full of info, so it’ll be nice to have them in that group instead of having to come back here.

@nomangos23 sounds like heartburn to me. I had it for the first time with my first and I was so confused because it didn’t really... burn? It was just uncomfortable and nothing made it go away until I thought to take some Tums.

@nightdreamr13 I would feel comfortable painting as long as the windows are open and there is air circulation.

So at work there is this conference/working group meeting in San Fran (Stanford) next month. Out of the 5 process engineers on staff, I am the one who would be the best choice to go. It’s in my current area of focus. My supervisor wants someone/anyone to go to the meeting. At that point I’ll be in my 3rd trimester. And I haven’t actually been working in this area for very long (I’ve only been at my job for 2 years, and I have been out of the lab for the past 6 months). So I don’t know how comfortable I would feel going on content alone. I’m sure I would get the ok from my OB to fly but it’s more of if I feel comfortable doing it. What would you guys do?

@LJMoon6 As long as you don't have any restrictions and your OB is fine with it, I don't see a problem. Maybe just research providers in the area as a just in case?
  • Options
@LJMoon6 How do you feel about the opportunity to go to the conference? It’s in your area of focus! Who cares if you only have 2yrs of experience. Don’t discount your time outside the lab - you’ve learned a lot there also! Is this a good opportunity to meet others and create collaborative relationships?

Pregnancy-wise you already know Stanford is located in a fantastic area and you have a world-class hospital right there. You will be in fantastic hands. Your OB will (most likely) clear you, and you can ask for a copy of your medical records of that gives you some piece of mind also.
  • Options
@LJMoon6 ^^^ wss!  If it's a good opportunity, don't feel like you shouldn't attend because of experience!  Isn't stuff like this how you would gain knowledge and experience and all that jazz?
As long as your OB is ok with it, my vote would be go for it!

@lillywonderland Honestly, I don’t really want to go. I went to it last year with a coworker. He was the lead presenter from our university so I didn’t have to do much but absorb what everyone was saying. It was very intimidating. My university is part of a group of universities that get money from NSF. This group of universities include Stanford, Harvard, Cornell, Berkley… etc. Every other University requires their staff to have a PhD except for ours. I only have an undergrad degree with no previous experience in this field, and all of them have PhDs with a very specific focus in this exact area. Not only is it intimidating, but last year was a shit show. Nothing useful came out of it. I loved going to Stanford and I loved the hotel I stayed in. I could also possibly convince my supervisor to let me go to semi con if I really wanted to. I just don’t know how comfortable I feel going alone, and 7 months pregnant… Ugh, I don’t know!

@LJMoon6 Echoing what everyone else has said, go! I don't think you'd regret going at all, but you might regret deciding to sit it out. It'll also show your boss/company that you're a team player with great initiative despite being pregnant (it's a damn shame that we still have to think about stuff like that these days, but it's true). Is there a chance that your company will send two of you to the conference?
  • Options
@LJMoon6 I don't think pregnancy should be a part of your decision on whether to go or not, outside of Dr restrictions obviously.  Also, I think you are selling yourself short.  Experience and knowledge in fields doesn't all come from classrooms/degrees.  I get that's its intimidating and last year was a shit show.  But if you don't go you may miss out on a great opportunity.

@LJMoon6 When I was pregnant with DS I refused to travel for work... BUT I knew I was quitting after he was born so a different situation. My boss knew if he forced it I'd just quit right away.
