@hey_clever_girl IT'S CRAZY! Although, he have a track record for changing our ideas as soon as we find out the sex so who knows! Our boy name right now is Benjamin Robert Sean (middle names after my husband's godfather and my brother) but a few weeks ago I wasn't budging on Mason. We have time.
@Allycat11 I like the name and I don’t think origin matters!
Our boy name is Thomas. Girl is up in the air. I have a strong desire to name a girl a gender neutral name. My current favorite is Charlie, but I also like Max, and DH likes Tiger (we had always talked about Tiger as a middle name actually). Question for the crowd: you don't have to say what your name is but if you have a gender neutral name do you like it? Or at least not hate it?
@zamora_spin my name is Jamie and my husband is Alex so both pretty gender neutral. There have been a few times that people think he’s Jamie and I’m Alex which we just find funny. The only other Jamie in my grade was a boy and it never bothered me... I don’t love love my name in general but I do like that it isn’t super feminine. My mom almost named me Taylor which I like way better lol.
@zamora_spin My name is Kelly, and growing up I never knew any boys named Kelly but I know several men now who share the name. It doesn't bother me, and I don't think it would have when I was a kid (I was a huge tomboy anyway, so I might have actually liked that there were boys with my name. Who knows!).
So now that we’re having a girl, our original girl name is a no go. Back to the drawing board and we have very different taste in names so this should be fun.
@cmessamore I LOVE the name Phoebe! Dh is not a fan so it will never be on our list. I think I only know 1 Phoebe in real life, she was in DDs 2s preschool class and now they dance together.

We have first names and middle initial picked out for both a boy or girl. The boy has been picked for 6 years but we've only had girls. So it'll be Jackson or Jacquelyn. Middle initial R, though we have some debate about which names it could be.
We currently call the baby "baby J", including both our kods. I'm thinking that'll stick for a while even after birth.
DH shot down all 10 girls names I suggested tonight....so that is awesome. Of course that is 10 more names than he has suggested. If we have a girl she will probably never have a name.

We are having a boy, and the name will most likely be William Nicholas (first name comes from my side of the family, middle name actually comes from both sides). Two things stopping me from committing completely:
1) that was a name we initially had when we started TTC in 2012. Five awful years of infertility followed before we got DD take-home. So it’s like that name got a little... tarnished? I think now that I have a healthy (-seeming) pregnancy those feelings are starting to fade though.
2) nickname! I have very close family members nn Bill, Billy, and full William (so those are absolute no-gos), and a more distant cousin nn Will. Back in 2012 I thought we’d go with the back of the name and nn Liam, but since then Liam has really exploded and I no longer want that nn.
So here’s the thing, hive mind please halpp: would Willy/Willie for a little boy (more than likely becoming Will as he gets older) be utterly cruel? DH’s favorite historical baseball player is Willie Mays from like the 1940s which played a large part in his supporting the William name to begin with. I used to think Willy sounded awful but now I’m starting to soften. Please stop my madness if it’s a terrible idea!!
@cato99 I'm probably biased because I have a cousin we called Willy, but I think it's a totally fine nn! I actually think the spelling Willie is really cute. I like Will too.
@cato99 In middle school the class dreamboat went by Willy, and no one made fun of him once for it. I would also keep all the nicknames in mind and then once LO is born, go with whatever feels most natural even if it is a duplicate or the more popular Liam.

@moon1417 I have a giant mental list of girl names but have trouble finding any boy names I like. I'm dying to know the sex too! My current fave is Rosalie.
@moon1417 I love the name Lena! That was on my list before ever becoming pregnant, but my sister took it for her second (fair as I still wasn't pregnant with even a first). Both my mom's grandmothers were named Lena.

We have a list of 7 names and I am dying to narrow it down. I am going to make my husband put them in order this weekend so we can hopefully cross some off the list. Our daughter's name was my idea, so I feel like he really wants this baby to have one of his picks as the name.
@mkrel for DD we knew we wanted to have a list of 2-4 and then wait until she was born before deciding. We started with a list of 10 and then each ranked by favorite. We had the same 3 names in our top 5 so it worked perfectly and those were the 3 names we used to decide after she was born

@EmilyA724 I love the idea of waiting until we meet her to pick a final name, but the planner in me just can't do it. Unless we really can't decide, I feel like I just need to know her name. I also really want something in particular for the nursery that would have her first initial on it. Kind of ridiculous, I know.
@Allycat11 I’m in the same boat! MH hates every girl name I’ve memtioned but doesn’t necessarily have realistic names to propose. Is it crazy to think we’ll just see her and know???!
I don't know what we are having yet, but if it is a girl, I like the name Thea a lot. Althea is a family name, but I'm not sure if I like it as well as just Thea. DH and I was waiting until we know the sex before we talk about names. We've joked we hope it a girl because there was exactly one boy name we liked and agreed upon and we've already used it for DS!
Since we were team green last time, we went to the hospital with 5 girl and 5 boy names and didn’t choose until the day after DS was born. My cousin didn’t name her daughter until about 48 hours later. They knew sex and picked initials but couldn’t decide til they saw her.
@heml seeing her will help, I’m sure. When I saw my son, it eliminated at least 2 names immediately... not even sure why!
Has anyone ever had a name picked out but changed once you actually saw baby? We have our name all picked, but I'm afraid we're going to change our minds if we see him and think it doesn't "fit" him.
@Lotus_2008, I posted part of this story earlier in the thread, but... Background: in my tradition we don't name after the living but we do name after the dead. With DS#1 we picked a name, then 2 days before he was born an important Rabbi who was close with DH's family passed away. I don't remember if it was the day he died, or the next, but before DS was born DH asked what I thought of using his name instead of the first name we already picked. I really liked the first name we already picked and wasn't a fan of the idea, but I just told DH, let me have some time to think about it. Once DS was born I took one look at him and knew we had to use the Rabbi's name, it fits perfectly I cannot picture my little son with the original name.
@zamora_spin I also have a gender neutral name and middle name. Go to our TTGP thing to see what it is. I don't hate it, but it's a bit weird that people in FB groups assume that I'm a guy when my name is spelled very very uniquely compared to the guy version or any other girl version of the name. My middle name is spelled uniquely for the way it is pronounced. My sister also has a gender neutral first and middle name and everyone thinks it's so cool!
People think we become mothers when we give birth but the truth is we become mothers the moment we start calling our babies to us in our thoughts, dreams and prayers. Some paths are short and some are so long that you can easily forget where you were headed.

@Lotus_2008: I had a friend have a name picked out (Caroline) and the minute she met her was like SHE IS NOT A CAROLINE and they named her Emerson. With our second, we had a name picked out (Katherine), ordered a stocking, and at about 30 weeks I FREAKED OUT and was like, I can just feel this baby is not a Katherine. So now she's Natalie and it suits her. I did the same thing with DD1 (Meredith) at around 20 weeks, but came back to my senses because she is a Meredith, 110%.
Question for those of you with longer names (3 syllables or more) or with kids who have longer names. I am worried about people shortening the name. Do people just automatically give you or your kid a nick name because your name is long? My husband thinks I am worried about something for no reason. His top pick is a pretty name, I just don't like what the nickname would be if people chose to shorten it.
My name is 3 syllables with a very obvious 1 syllable nick name. I can count on one hand the number of people who call me the short form in my whole life. When I was young my parents "encouraged" people to use my full name and when I was older I took over the role of correcting people 😂 it was not bad from my experience and I love my name.
My in laws are all 2 or 3 syllables as well and they've managed to keep full names to adulthood.

DD’s name is Ophelia and daycare started calling her Phee Phee almost immediately. That is exclusively her name with her teachers and friends. At first it bothered me, but I like that they are all connected with her enough to give her their own nickname and that she has her own world there. I and family and everyone outside of daycare still call her Ophelia or maybe Phee, and she answers to it all no problem.
Me 31 DH 34 TTC #1 5/13 BFP #3 5/2/14 DD born 1/19/15 NTNP #2 8/17 BFP 12/13/18 ED 8/21/19
@mkrel My daughters both have 3 syllable names as mentioned above. They get cutesty nicknames at daycare, but I also chose names that don't really have an option to formally shorten (Meredith and Natalie). So for now people will call them Mer / Mer Mer and Nat / Nat Nat, but I don't think those will stick. It's going to be a lot more challenging with #3 because we plan to name her Catherine if it's a girl (yes.... we switched first letters from our previously picked version of the name) and that has a million nicknames that I probably won't be able to control.
I have a 3 syllable name that I adore and I hate the obvious nickname for. I have two alternative nick names that I can try to put out there in order to reduce the chances of the one I dislike. Not so sure how that will come off though. If this is a girl, we'll see if it works...
So we just found out that we are having a girl! My husband and I are pretty set on the name Quinn but our last name is also one syllable. One, does it sound weird?? Two one syllable names together? For example, Quinn Smith or Quinn Doll. Two, possible middle names? I'm thinking definitely more than one syllable for this one. I love Quinn Penelope but DH is not so in love. Others on the table are Quinn Marie and Quinn Hainsly but we'd love new ideas!
@mkrel My aunt had 4 daughters and gave them all 3-4 syllable names that have obvious nicknames. Whenever anyone tried to shorten their names, she would correct them. As adults all 4 of them still go by their full names. I would just keep in mind you will not always have control over what others call your child, eventually they will have their own friends and own opinions and may choose to go with a nickname.
