The Great Big Thread of Names

Re: The Great Big Thread of Names

@wabash15 Thanks, that’s definitely food for thought. Even before we knew we were having twins I was contemplating using “C” names for all our kids (DD’s name also starts with C) but...nothing is set in stone yet. Especially since my favorite girl name right now (Isla) doesn’t start with a C. 😂

  • Names are such a mindfu**.  We are set on the name for this baby (Charles Alexander), but all of a sudden last night I had a panic when I realized that when we call him Charlie, it is very sing-songy with DD2 whose name also ends in -lie.  Oops.

  • Yea DH vetoed Everett last night... I think he actually likes it but he said it sounds too similar to our other sons name. I’m not sure if I agree, they both start with E and end in T but other than that are totally different. He keeps jokingly throwing out all of these aweful names we would never use (pretty sure he’s joking at least).

When we first found out it was twins we actually said if they were both boys we would use our maternal grandfather names for middle names, Albert and Ralph. We didn’t use either for DS1 bc we didn’t want to leave either man out and we weren’t sure if we would have another boy. DH actually recommended in his one serious attempt to help that we use both names and call him Albert Ralph but I feel like we would be having an 80 year old man 😬

  • @BigBadWolf12 I don’t think my brother seems to mind. Although no one calls him by his first, he’s always used it on resumes and stuff like LinkdIn for work. I guess eventually everyone finds out and uses his middle but if I said his first name in a crowd he’d probably also turn, it’s just something he’s had to explain forever and doesn’t seem to bug him. I could be wrong but he’s never complained.

As far as nicknames, your situation is also pretty unique. I’m only speaking of my personal rules for nicknames. I definitely take possible nn’s into account when trying out names though! Just in case!

  • @aevan011 Yes.  I've vetoed names bc I cannot stand the nn even though I like the full name.  Boo.

And ya,  definitely unique in our case.  I sometimes wonder if/when we move back to Canada if we will regret calling him the Swedish nn bc everyone will think it's a different English name that sounds similar or sorry form it to the Canadian nn instead,  but I figure we'll cross that bridge when we get to it and he'll be older and can pick what he wants to be called at that point I'd he wants to keep the Swedish nn or "translate" it back over. Hopefully he doesn't hate us haha.

  • @olivemomma I am on the same page as your DH with not liking sibling names that sound too similar. DS is named Ezra and one of our long time front runners for boys has always been Elijah. DH really wants to use that if this one is a boy but I shot it down because they start and end similarly.

  • @jmesue1030 I love Violet! I'd go for it.

I think we have semi-decided on Rhett for the first name. It's not too popular, geographically appropriate for where we live, and it sounds good with the rest of the family names.

Now, on to the middle names, we are really all over the place.

    James
    Daniel
    Lee
    Patrick
    Aiden
    Oliver

What MN would you pair with Rhett?
Rainbow baby Dean is due 2/17/17!
  • Regarding similar kid names: both my DDs end with -lyn and if this one was a girl there it would have ended in the same. We didn't mean for it to be that way, but it just happened. I didn't even notice until after dd2 was born!

But their nicknames don't sound similar at all.
    DD1 5/23/14, DD2 12/5/16   Baby #3 on the way!

  • @lilmamabebe3 omg I LOVE Olivia Rose! I admit I am not the hugest fan of Olivia in general (probably just because it's so popular. I dunno). But when I read Olivia Rose, I was like.. holy cow that's beautiful! It fits so well, flows so elegantly, AND it has meaning to you! Love it.
    Screw Reily .
Make your husband see reason! Haha
  • I think we've settled on a girl name; our boy name is still up in the air. I want the middle name after my grandfather, DH wants it after his. Only problem is it is also his dad's name and I would like our kids to have a name of their own, a family name from my side and his family name. He doesn't seem to "get" that the last name is literally his family name.  So naming has been tabled at this point.

@jmesue1030 I know I'm late on this, but I really like Violet
@cato99 Frederick William is a great name and Frederick has a lot of nn options. Freddy, Freddie, Fred, Fritz, Rick...

I know this was discussed further up but I have a long name and people automatically shorten it to the obvious nn and it drives me crazy. If you know me well and we have that relationship, okay, but if we just met, or don't know each other well, or you're my doctor don't just assume that you can call me by a nn. My dad has actually NEVER shortened my name. I appreciate that.

hubby wants Julian. I thought it was a girl so I can’t find a name I like for a boy. I don’t really like Julian. I liked Roman and Dominic but he said no to Dominic and doesn’t really like Roman.

I had to pray for my oldest name and we didn’t officially pick DS2 until he was 2 days old. It’s stressful lol help
  • @thirdtimesacharm2019 PREACH! A distant sort of not a relative used the middle name as the call name for several years until the kid could talk and said she didn't want to be called that name and now goes by her first name.   :D

Okay DH and I need middle name help. We are not discussing names with any family or friends prior to the birth.

Josiah is our front runner for a boy right now. I am having trouble choosing a mn we like with it. Because it is a long name we would prefer a 1-2 syllable mn. We are definitely not using any family names.

Also, Amelia is our front runner for a girl but again struggling with a mn. Most of the short names that I like with it I have ruled out for various reasons (Jane, Jade, Kate, Hope and Violet) and other names I like have been ruled out for also being heavy on the vowels, which feels sing songy with Amelia. Although to be fair I am not 100% sold on Amelia because it is far more common than either of our either kids names and one of my bffs has a 7 year old with that name. DH and I just can't agree on anything else.

Any suggestions on mn's for either of those?

  • @Allycat11 I love Amelia Jane! Maybe Amelia Leigh, Rose, or Beth?

For boys I like Josiah with David, Lee, Quinn, Dale, or Cade.

    @jmesue1030 I like the 2 syllables also!
Rainbow baby Dean is due 2/17/17!
  • @Allycat11 I just want to say that I LOVE the name Amelia. It would be a top choice for us if I didn't feel like it would be too similar to Emily.

Not sure about mn for Josiah, but for Amelia I like Rose or Marie.

  • Just found out we are having a boy! My DD's name is Dorothy (Dottie). We like Daniel for a boy. Is Dottie/Danny too much? Open to any other suggestions! Naming is hard.
  • @WinchesterGirl @EmilyA724 Amelia Rose has been high on my list of options. My sister wants to use that mn one day...but she is not even married yet and there is no reason she could not still use it.  Jane was high on my list but DH's grandma's name is Betty Jane and she is a horrible person, I don't want anyone to think it was to honor her.

@elizabeth_1985 I love your daughter's name! Dottie and Danny are too similar for my taste but other people love matchy sibling names.

  • @Allycat I feel like mn can be repeated. Rose was my grandmother's name, it is my sister's mn, her DD2's mn, and high on the list for me as a mn without any worry about it being repetitive. My mom, me, and DD all have the same middle name. I feel like mn are not said enough for it to be repetitive.

@elizabeth_1985 congrats on a boy! I also feel like Dottie and Danny are a little too matchy matchy for my taste, but if you love it, don't cross it off yet.

  • @Allycat11 - I just wanted to chime in to say that I also love the name Amelia. We're having a boy, but Amelia was my top choice/most likely choice if we were having a girl. Amelia Rose sounds lovely
  • @Allycat11 I also like Amelia Rose. Maybe Amelia Claire?

Im going to think on mn’s for Josiah!
  • @Allycat11 for whatever reason I keep thinking Josiah Douglas or Josiah Daniel 🤷‍♀️
  • @jmesue1030 ooo love Amelia Claire and Josiah Daniel.

  • @Allycat11 oh I’ll be so honored if you choose my suggestions! ☺️☺️
  • @olivemomma we definitely would call her Mia for short! Not sure if we would use Amelia or Mia more...probably equal amounts. I know not everyone loves nicknames but I am someone who needs them. DD goes by a short version of her name more than her full name. DS is named Ezra, which totally does not need a nn and I still call him Ez, Ezzy or Ezzybezzy all the time.

  • @Allycat11 @EmilyA724 Thanks for your help! We decided on Daniel John, but going with DJ for a potential NN as to not be too matchy. He is going to have two older sisters, which my husband says is like being thrown in a lion's den (hence Daniel). (My husband also has two older sisters.)

@Allycat11 Coming from a sister (me) whose sister had kids before her & used a name I liked & a name from my “short list”,  I would shy away from it unless you have a v specific tie to the name. I regret encouraging my niece’s MN bc it’s a name I wanted “someday.”  In her defense, I know the second name is v significant to my sister as well.  It was  a giant punch in the gut, regardless.

ETA:  I love Josiah & Amelia!!!
  • Baby is definitely a boy. I got over my disappointment but I can’t find a name I love the way I loved the girl name we chose. We have these on the table:

-Noah Gerard (Gerard is my dad’s middle name)
-Christian Mario (mario is FIL name)

i know its early but I want to love a name.

  • Names are so hard!  Our son was named after his late grandfather which made it pretty easy.  His grandfather was Guillermo so we went with the English version of William.  So far nothing is popping out for baby girl.  I don’t want anything too popular.  So far running list Mary, Cora, Wren, Naomi, Elca.  Just not sure.
  • @Allycat11, I love Amelia and the nickname Mia. Mia is my BFF's nickname and she is the best person ever.

    *Live, Love, Laugh, Learn*

  • @denma2015 - I love the name Cora - it's not common but it's very pretty.
    BabyFruit Ticker

  • @allycat11 - Not for nothing, but I think @jmesue1030's suggestion of Amelia Claire is so pretty! I think both Josiah Dean and Josiah Daniel are solid options ... or possibly Josiah Matthew or Josiah Michael. Definitely say with your last name to see if any flow better than the others.

Jumping in late since we've been having an issue coming to an agreement on DD2's name. I *love* Savannah, but DH is against it since DD1 has another "place" name, though I had planned on "squishing" her first and middle name together and calling her Sam (unless she later prefers Savannah; I love the name same, but don't like Samantha, hence I wanted a name that could be finagled into Sam). So now we're kind of leaning towards Sloane. It's such a strong, one-syllable, non-NN kind of name that I'm having a hard time coming up with a MN. Any ideas? The ones that seem to stand out for me are Sloane Victoria and Sloane Marguerite. We can't have a name that ends in R or Ra because it wreaks havoc with our last name. FWP, I know.

  • I second loving Sloane Victoria!
  • So I think we've narrowed it down to two options.
