Re: Randoms 1/21

  • @harveyisaboysname - I had to go to L&D for my shot too but they just sent me to the lab, had me do blood work wait an hour and then get the shot and wait some more. It was a long ass time for a shot!

@MRDCle - I am sooo sorry for your loss. Were they old? In the last 5 years I have had to put down 3 dogs. 2 for cancer and 1 for other issues. All were way too young (7,8, 1). It is such a hard thing to go though.

@mermaidca- any updates? sending positive vibes your way.

  • @MRDCle I'm so so sorry. All the hugs girl.
  • @MRDCle I’m so sorry 😞
  • Thank you for all the kind words ladies. @kosmo86 she was 8 which isn't young exactly but it's younger than expected. It came completely out of the blue - Sunday she was playing in the snow with DS and I and she ate all her food and was going out as normal yesterday. The only change was she didn't want to get up and walk to our room for bedtime last night.

@MRDCle:  Oh no!  That's heartbreaking.  I hope you all can find a way to take the time you need to grieve today.  Hugs! :(

@honey_suckle @professormama:  I'm in the humanities, and also in a great position right now - which is why I'm annoyed about the rejection more on principle than in point of fact.  The university where I'm finishing up my PhD is SUPER family-friendly, and it looks like there will be permanent opportunities here for both myself and my husband (also in the humanities) if we want them.  I'm not teaching this year (on a fellowship), and next year I can choose to teach 3-6 hours each semester, and/or develop online classes.  It's a little sad that DH doesn't get any of the summer off because he's half admin (and of course has zero paternity leave because America), but his benefits are awesome so I really can't complain.  Also, the environment comes chock-a-block with really sweet undergrads who are happy to babysit for $6-8 an hour!
  • I'm so sorry @MRDCle:disappointed:  Dogs are our family too and it's so hard, especially unexpected like that.  Sending thoughts your way.

  • @mermaidca:  Yay for the good news!  I really hope they left you for the hour AFTER they found out everything was okay, though. :P
  • I'm glad you got good news @mermaidca

  • @MRDCle so sorry for your pup, that’s the worst  :(

  • @mermaidca So glad it wasn’t something serious!

  • @mermaidca So glad it was only that!!

@MRDCle I am so, so sorry. I lost my first dog at 9 and it was very sudden as well. My second dog I put down at 15 1/2. It is definitely never easy. My dogs are my babies. I still cry over my last dog and it's been 2 years since his death! Thinking of you and your family.
  • @MRDCle I am so deeply sorry for your loss  <3
  • @MRDCle I’m so so sorry. Sending love to your family today.
    @mermaidca glad everything is OK!
@TheSouffleGirl @professormama @honey_suckle impressed by you guys. Academia scared the crap out of me so I went into industry.
  • @MRDCle I’m so sorry! Especially since it was so unexpected. I’m sure that’s going to be hard for your whole family.

@mermaidca I’m glad you got good news! Don’t feel silly about that. Any bleeding whatsoever and I’d be in there in no time too. Haha. Better safe than sorry.
  • I don’t remember what thread the ikea discussion was in, but DD and I are now at ikea eating chicken tenders and veggie balls. No way in hell I was going to listen to her cry for an hour on the drive home.
  • @lyse01 I would do the same thing.

I had chipotle for lunch and there's leftover ice cream in the fridge from a party that I purchased and I'm really debating on having some....
  • I just got my workout in for today. I was dumb and said “ ok it’s nap time”. The kids I nanny literally just took off. I had to chase one around the kitchen island for a good 5 minutes. When I finally caught him he gagged himself and threw up. So I had to put him down and clean that. Got him again, he was upset but fine. Got him in his bed and he sat there gagging himself again to throw up.

  • Total change of subject, but I just found out my favorite long time band (Dave Matthews) is actually touring in my city this year which is really rare. He'll be here in late August when baby is about 4 1/2 months old. To all the STMs, is this doable? I mean, I'll be back to work, so I'm assuming I can manage a concert. I'm just worried about the pumping.....
  • @rennie1108 get a little manual pump and you should be fine. Getting the milk home might be a different story but if you don’t mind dumping once or twice it’s def doable.

  • @rennie1108 super do-able. Take a hand pump and just pump in the bathroom when you need to - also, hand-pumps are SUPER cheap. It's a little awkward, but as long as you're not overly modest then its no big deal. I swear, I've pumped all over the place, including in corporate office bathrooms and locker-rooms while doing field work, and at a broadway play during intermission. The broadway play was, like I said, a little awkward because I was standing by the sink hand pumping while women are filing past me washing their hands, but whatever, it was worth it. Plus it's all women, what do they care? Breastmilk is good for several hours off refrigeration (3-4 hours in a warm room, longer in a cooler room), so after you pump just cap the bottle and throw it in your purse.

Kelly mom is my favorite resource for any moms thinking about breastfeeding or pumping! https://kellymom.com/bf/pumpingmoms/milkstorage/milkstorage/
  • Thanks guys! I definitely have a hand pump on my registry so I'll be prepared

This may be a UO (or I'm guessing not a UO for many of you), but I refuse to let a baby completely control my life. I know, it's easier said than done, but I just got back from visiting my best friend from college and she has a 7 1/2 month that she has NEVER left. He won't take a bottle so she is basically chained to him. I just refuse to have that happen (and since I work it won't happen).
  • @rennie1108 I’m sure this time it’ll be different for us because we will just have a surplus of kids, but with DS we started having date nights (including overnights with my parents at like...2.5, 3 months? He was a chill baby and I was exclusively pumping so it worked for us. No flames here.

  • I need to go back and catch up on posts and I will once I stop fuming.
My sister in law asked how much weight I’ve gained. Surprised by the question, I actually answered (so dumb of me). Her response? “I can tell, I can see all of the weight in your face!” Uh, thanks????? Like we are not close, why are you commenting on my weight? I’d never comment on hers.
  • I haven't been feeling great all week and finally got myself to my GP this morning. Turns out I have the flu.

I'm prescribed Tamiflu, taking Tylenol for fever and aches, saline spray for sinuses, lots of fluids, sugar free cough drops, and the humidifier on full blast.

I've been trying sleeping sitting up, but can't seem to pillow up comfortably. Any tips on how to muddle through?  We are supposed to leave for our babymoon next Thursday (Florida!) and I'd hate to cancel.
  • @lilpotatomama wow thats ridiculous of her to ask. Almost everyone I know, including myself, gain weight in their face and are puffy during pregnancy especially 3rd trimester. How rude to ask about it.

@jenbarrdoc sorry to hear you have the flu.  I'm really no help, unless you have a recliner you can sit in instead? You should probably be fine by next Thursday but this weekend will be the worst of it.

Oh @MRDCle, I’m so sorry. I know how badly that must hurt.

@mermaidca it’s always better to be safe than sorry, though!
  • @jennbarrdoc Try an airplane neck pillow for extra support if you are trying to sleep sitting up. It helps a bit! Hope you pull through!
  • Does walking up the stairs 1000x a day to pee count as exercise?
  • @stefanielyn1991 I say yes.

@jenbarrdoc booo, the flu is so awful. Get well soon!

I’m officially in bed and down the internet rabbit hole of French beauty secrets. At least it inspired me to remember to wash my face and put on moisturizer.
  • @lilpotatomama WTF?! Some people!

I just had half a beer with dinner tonight.  It was ice cold and so perfect!

  • @gollygeeitsamy oh, she has two kids and is fully aware of pregnancy and postpartum weight gain. She has done plenty of that. But I would never, EVER say anything to make her feel badly about herself. Everyone’s journey is unique and weight is just nobody’s business.

@mermaidca it’s always something with her. She loves to poke at me and it’s never, ever funny.
  • @lilpotatomama ughhh, I’m sorry! People are truly the worst. At Christmas one of my aunts said “wow, you’re going to be huge by the end!” then asked me how much weight I had gained. When I told her, she said “oh so it’s pretty much just all baby”. Like I’m 5’3 - there is no place for this belly to go. I handled it with an eye roll, but then got upset about something the next day and ended up crying over that too. Like just keep all of your comments about anybody’s, let alone pregnant women’s, weight to yourself!
  • I just had a major cleaning binge... got through vacuuming most of the house, cleaning my bathroom, and the biggest thing was going through all of the accumulated art from the last 4 years - i threw away an insane amount of stuff. We had so much "art" that was just a piece of paper with tape on it. I even found an old grocery list that just made it in the art pile by mistake. Then I used this box from the container store and created a little "keepsake box" for my son with stuff from birth - 2017; and I'm about to buy a second box that will start housing art and keepsake items from 2018 onward. I figure it's the best option to just do a box like this every few years, because in reality there's no way I'm going to make some sort of crafty baby book or scan in their art or anything. Keepsake boxes seem way more do-able for me.
  • @professormama way.to.go.

i just grocery shopped and need to cook in order to fit everything in my fridge.
  • @professormama Yes on the box idea! My mom did that for us kids and it was great to go through later in our lives, for us and for her.

Went to do HDBD this week and realized we have no full sized mirrors in our house. Is this weird? You all must be taking your photos at work?
    Me: 29 DW: 44
  • @professormama I love that idea! My mom did one large tote for each of us kids, but I love the idea of doing a smaller box for every few years. Props to you for a productive day!
  • @sheepshepherdess yay! I love hearing that your mom did this and y’all liked it. I have weird mom guilt over not being a scrap booker? I had trouble even keeping the fill in the blank baby book up for the first year. No idea how I’ll do it for #2. But the boxes are way more achievable. @jlklec19 happy to be an inspiration! I just needed to find some manageable way to keep all the stuff that’s sentimental.
  • @sheepshepherdess I don’t have a full sized mirror either. With DD I took them all at work, now I’m just doing belly selfies. Haha.
