Why does my attempt to post a gif never work! I think maybe it worked?

  • So, did I tell you guys I was recently told I'm getting laid off at the end of this month? I've been working part-time from home for over a year, doing an easier version of what I used to do full time before I got KU with DD. I don't know how I can ever find another job like this. I haven't been making enough to justify paying for childcare, and I've been able to work when DH or my mom can take care of DD in the afternoon. The only way we could afford daycare is if I go back to work full time, but I can't justify working full time just to be able to afford daycare.  I'd rather just take care of DD myself. Plus I want to be home with the new baby for much longer than a FT job in America would allow, anyway. I'm kind of thinking my best bet is to go on unemployment and then transition to SDI (which is state because CA) when I become eligible.

    What would you do?

  • OYE. This one coworker is INSUFFERABLE to work with. Luckily I don't interact with him a ton, and I dread the projects that we are together on. He'll send me an email, then immediately walk into my office (2 feet away) and tell me he sent that email. Every. damn. time. It has happened 4 times already today just on this one issue. Many facepalms were had
  • @poshspice ugh that's awful. I'm sorry you're going through that. Have you looked on indeed for work at home positions in your career field?
  • @poshspice maybe there is a way of stringing together several separate short term gigs for now? That way you can start up again at your own pace once you're ready after your LO is born.
  • @poshspice if there isn't something you can do similar, it sounds like staying home is the answer. I think the bigger question is can you afford that and will it set your career back - if so, do you care? I work full time and am mostly remote so we send DD to daycare. My mom thought I'd be able to maybe work from home and not send her and that is absolutely not possible with my job.

    Babysizer Cravings Pregnancy Baby Tracker

  • @poshspice Oh no! That's rough. kvh22 is right, can you afford it $$ or career wise? Maybe try to shoot for a year off and see where that lands you?

  • @eatinwatermelonseeds thank you - yes, it totally sucks. I haven't looked much online yet, but most of the work from home jobs are customer service/call center things that pay half as much per hour as I make at my specialized job. It's pretty bleak. I got my current job via a referral from my old manager who was/is employed at the same company. I feel like I would have to rely on the same kind of referral to get a similar job

@knarlytaurus the limiting factor is it has to be WFH. I can't really go into an office for temp jobs.

@kvh22 @SpaceBurger I've been playing with the idea of starting over in a different field when I finally go back to work FT - whenever that may be. I've been on the broker side of group insurance for most of my career (one of the most boring careers there is!), and I would love to either be on an in-house benefits team or move into human resources - where I would have to start at the bottom, anyway. This industry is too stressful, people are constantly spread too thin, and I definitely don't want to stay in it when I go back to work FT. I think we could make it work $$ wise with the little bit of unemployment I'm eligible for, but it won't be fun. To be honest, I was playing with the idea of just quitting because I've been so sick this pregnancy, but UI is definitely a better option than no money at all!

  • Walked back to the car after hockey practice tonight and it won’t start... battery dead. Now sitting in a dark, cold car with 2 cranky kids waiting for dh to get here and jump me.

@psychobutthead I have no appetite. Eating makes me nauseous so no desire to eat. I miss enjoying food.
  • @Stormiewinter I was going to make a joke about you waiting for your husband to jump you, but thought you might not be amused ;)
  • @Stormiewinter eating is such a chore now. I hate everything, and I just eat because I'm hungry but don't really enjoy much anymore. I remember with my DD eating only became less horrible once I hit 3rd tri. So far away.

  • @poshspice OMG with your background you would be so great at in house benefits! It can be so confusing. I don't know that you'd have to start at the bottom, per se, either. Maybe there are some courses you could take (self-paced or something). I think in house benefits people still fall within HR so it could be worthwhile to get some sort of credentials there. It's not my area of expertise (I'm in marketing) but I have friends in HR at my company and various others in the Bay Area. I know you said CA but I forget where you are exactly. Informational interviews over lunch are also great if you can make that work with your network. I find people rarely took direct paths to where they end up which is super encouraging as I know I'll have to transition to something else when we move out of the Bay Area (if I can't keep my job remote which is an option for now).

  • @eatinwatermelonseeds everyone has pretty much already said what I would suggest, so all I can add is GOOD LUCK! I'm sure you'll be awesome.

@poshspice ugh, that sucks. But maybe it will lead to new doors open? But, if you can swing it and stand it, staying home for a while is a good option to. I hope you figure things out and everything lands the way you want, whatever that may be!

  • @kvh22 I'm here in the Bay Area, too! I'm licensed for Life & Health and Property & Casualty insurance, but I don't think that does me any good for in-house positions. Probably only useful for the broker side, where I've been. But still, looking at only WFH positions is super limiting.  :/

  • @poshspice can you market yourself as a consultant? I’ve really struggled being a SAHM just because it was never something I thought I wanted and when it happened corporate life and making money was so jammed down my throat that it made me feel useless and anxious. I’ve mostly gotten over that and I often think “this is the only time DS will ever be an infant. And I get to spend it with him. I will never get his babyhood back. The rest will fall into place” I’m sorry if that’s not more helpful, I don’t know too much about your job/what SDI is. Having a career is important to me and I'm going to work on that soon but I know I’ll look back on this year with DS and never regret it. In case SAH is something you want, that’s how I would think of it. I do wish we had more time, honestly if we got six months off, I don’t know that I would have quit working. Six months was when I truly felt human again and not like DS needed me *quite* so much. It’s all so hard! Sorry for rambling!

I so want to send H out to find me buffalo tenders and a soft pretzel but that would make me the worst so I’m not going to but it’s alllll I can think about right now. Oh, and a Pizza Hut pizza.

  • DH is gone to hockey, both girls are finally asleep and my to do list is LONG.  But I can't quite seem to pick myself up and get started.  If I knew I'd have time to make muffins for preschool in the morning then I'd just say screw it all and curl up in front of Grey's, likely falling asleep.  But mornings don't always run smoothly around here so I'd better find a way to get my butt in gear

  • Happy Friday everyone! Our only plans today are a workout class this morning. It would be a good idea for me to clean so hoping I can find the motivation 🤞🏽

  • @poshspice sorry! Sounds like staying at home might be a good option for now and then you can see where that takes you. DH and I work FT and DD is in FT daycare, and it just works for us that way and everyone's happy. I think every family does something a little different and sooner or later we all figure it out. Good luck!

Speaking of work, I'm on a committee and we had a pre-planned social thing last night that I had to attend. I don't work with these people a lot but we were in a bar and I made a comment about not drinking because I was pregnant. I don't know if I said it weird or too fast or too quiet, but NOBODY made a peep about it and just carried on about their business. I mean, I don't expect a round of applause or anything, but a group of 8 people and not one person had any kind of reaction? LOL so of course a little while later, I made another comment, and still it went unnoticed. So it was weird and now I'm just staying quiet about it, though I look forward to the day where I'm clearly showing and pregnant, and if one of them inquires about it, I'll say that I told them already the night at the bar and watch them be confused.

  • I feel so unloved by my dog. Aren't dogs supposed to be sensitive and intuitive? Everytime I throw up she is traumatized and hides in the basement 😂😂
I have the opposite.  Chuck is too involved.  When I’m throwing up Chuck tries to stick his head under my arm to see what I’m doing.  Also not helpful 😂😂

Does anyone watch Modern Family? *SPOILERS AHEAD* I stopped watching because it was getting kind of boring and not funny, and I hate to admit this but I did tune into Wednesday's Halloween episode to see which character dies (it's Claire and Mitch's mom Didi). Pretty uneventful in my opinion and I really think they killed off a character just for ratings. I mean, it worked on me but it was pretty lame. But --- does anyone suspect that Haley is pregnant? She was eating like crazy and acting weird in the episode. I don't know what her status is with the professor but she certainly seems pregnant.

  • Hey ladies, I already posted this in the pregnancy announcements thread but it doesn’t get as much traffic so I thought I’d post here too.

So I bought two pregnancy announcements because I couldn’t decide what to use and I picked the Halloween one which leaves this one 👇🏻 unused. It’s super cute and it seems like a waste not to use it. Would anyone want it? If so, just pm me and I can send it to you (it’s a digital file). No strings attached! Just don’t want it to go to waste.

  • Catching up from yesterday congrats @eatinwatermelonseeds
Happy Friday to everyone. Any fun weekend plans? We have swim class, a toddler Halloween party, and we are finally getting to a pumpkin patch with family. I'm excited because last year when we went DD wasn't walking and now she can really explore.

  • @peachy13 DH thinks Hailey is pregnant lol. I'm not sure if they just needed weird coping mechanisms or what so I'm a bit more skeptical. We were also like "wait, is this the episode where someone dies and it's her????" Agreed...lame.

My work throws an annual Halloween party. We have events every other week (tech company in Palo Alto) on Thursday or Friday with food and alcohol but the Halloween party they go ALL OUT...although no alcohol (which is nice for this pregnant lady) since this is the one event you're supposed to bring your family to. I'm super excited to bring DD. I was still on maternity leave last year and she was a little young for it (2 months old) so this is the first time I'm going since I first started and just kind of scoped it out but didn't really participate. Kelly Clarkson is performing which I'm kind of "ehh" about but it shows you how much they go all out. The logistics of getting DD, DH, and I together to ride up together are kind of annoying but it should be a blast.

  • @peachy13 I still love Modern Family but it doesn’t take much to make me laugh haha! Phil is just too funny. I didn’t even connect that about Haley but I miss things like that so something to think about! I also LOLed at the end when Lily admitted it was her 😂😂😂

  • @kvh22 KELLY CLARKSON IS PERFORMING AT YOUR WORK PARTY?!?!! That’s so intense! In a cool way! I think she’s fine, some of my friends are going to her concert but I chose not to because she’s not someone I care to spend money to see and they were getting $$ seats and also I’ll be super pregnant.

  • @kvh22 do you work for Google lol

  • @DuchessOfCambridge yea I wouldn't pay money to see her but I don't dislike her music. I have hazel eyes and no one sings about hazel eyes so I've always loved that song lol.

@sleepy33 Nahh nothing most people have heard of as it's a B2B company but we compete for engineering talent with the Googles, Facebooks, Netflixes, and Apples of the world (etc.) so we have awesome benefits and it's very Silicon Valley if you've seen that show on HBO (but a 25k employee, publicly traded company, not a startup). As someone in operations, I just benefit from the engineers being easily swayed by these types of things.

  • Can I come to your work party @kvh22??
  • @kvh22 nice! I haven't seen Silicon Valley, but I have seen The Internship, which is the only reason I even remember Google's HQ is in Palo Alto lol

  • @peachy13 Oh I didn’t even think about that with Haley, but it would make sense. If she was pregnant, would it be Dylan’s since Arvin was away?

@kvh22 That is so cool that Kelly Clarkson is performing at your company’s Halloween party!

  • @peachy...it'll be interesting to see if they just didn't absorb it, or what?

@chucksmom15 that sounds like my dog Bruno! He's super nosy and wants to be right in the middle of everything. He's definitely worried but his way of expressing worry is to then lay on top of me or hover over me in bed panting in my face!
