  • @ginny_203 we are getting an Owlet. It’s really a personal choice. Experts will say this or that. Honestly, I didn’t sleep for months with DD. Even if she was safely in the bassinet next to me, I was terrified of falling asleep and would panic and check her breathing all night long. I don’t expect the monitor to save my baby, but I’m ok with some glitches if it means just a tiny bit of peace of mind.
  • We used the snuza with DS. We had very few false alarms until he got bigger (5+ months), and the false alarms were worth it IMO. If it goes off I can clearly see whether my baby is breathing or not.

  • Disney on Ice is coming to Baltimore in mid-October. I'm dying to take DD, but I'll be 37 weeks at the time. Trying to decide if it's wise to spend $60 total on tickets or if I should pass in case the baby comes early. Any thoughts/advice? DD did not come early so I don't foresee this one coming early, but you never know and I'd hate to waste money on tickets.

  • @offtoneverland - when do you have to decide by? Honestly I think it depends on how much the $60 means to you. I'd probably risk it if you think DD would love it. I think it would be a fun thing to do with her before baby sister comes :)

  • @offtoneverland honestly... I'd go for it! Are tickets transferable? Worst case scenario if baby girl does come early maybe a family member could take DD if you aren't up to it? I remember seeing Aladdin on ice with my aunt and uncle as a kid and it was truly magical!

  • @offtoneverland I would do it. If you think she will love it and it will be something special for you two to do together, then I think it is worth the risk. How fun!!

  • @offtoneverland according to the spontaneous labor calculator, your odds of having your baby before 37w are 9%. I think when you have kids there’s always at least a 10% chance of things not working out for some reason (random illness, freak storm, car trouble) so I would definitely go for it.

  • @offtoneverland I say do it! How special!
  • Thanks everyone! I really appreciate your advice. I thought it would be fine but couldn't help thinking it was silly to plan something so close to my due date. I start getting anxious around this point of pregnancy because everyone looks at you like the baby's about to fall out and it makes me think it's so much closer than it is!  :D

  • @rosebud1230 FWIW Some hospitals won't let you leave with the baby in a car seat with that kind of stuff attached. I was just talking to an OB Nurse the other day and she said that anything that isn't manufactured with the original car seat would not pass the car seat check. You would either have to go home and get the original stuff or get a new car seat.

Has anyone considered or used an Owlet smart sock? A friend of mine had a baby who sadly passed away from SIDS at 4 months old and I'm starting to get severe anxiety about the idea of that happening to us... :(
I’m the same way. My coworker’s daughter passed away at 4.5 months. She had been perfectly healthy up until that point. I had angelcare monitor with both my kids when they’re in the crib but I’m thinking I want something for this baby before he is in the crib.
  • @smulrich16 and any other PPs who have talked about this...I had a couple friends suggest registering for things that clip onto the car seat that baby can reach, the little Freddie firefly, etc. are those considered dangerous too? FTM and naively assumed they were okay but now I’m second guessing myself.

@firsttimespartanmom i have heard those are “dangerous” in the car (pretend there’s a strike through here) ****but it’s a moot point because you’re suppose to position the car seat handle back/behind the carseat once the seat is secured in the car. so it’s not like anything can dangle while the car is in motion anyways.**** if you have a travel system carseat + stroller, i believe dangling toys are ok in that situation where you’re just pushing the baby around in the stroller (but anyone correct me if i’m wrong).
  • @firsttimespartanmom - I think if they are soft they are ok, but I'm not 100% sure. @highsteaks - it actually depends on the carseat where the handle should be while the car is in motion. Our carseat allowed the handle to be in any position, which was nice not to have to move it getting baby in and out of the car. Here is a list of common seats and where the handle should be from carseats for the littles: https://csftl.org/infant-car-seats-where-does-the-handle-go/

@mockingjay1 thanks for correcting me! that was an interesting article. our britax bucket seat did specify that the handle had to be back, which i only point out because that link said britax allows any position. check manuals, folks!
  • Technically anything in the car that could become a projectile in an accident is unsafe. Like the suction cup shade things that you can put on the windows. Safety first, but also.... Convenience matters too. Plus, crying babies in the backseat can be a huge distraction, so if those clip on toys help out, sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. As long as your carseat allows you to keep the handle up while driving.

  • Okay, this all makes sense. I had something on our registry that clips to the handle, but no one had bought it so I just deleted it. I have a small firefly thing that clips onto the side and can always just use it on the stroller. So thankful for all you ladies, there are literally millions of things I didn’t even stop to consider when it comes to these things!
  • @smulrich16 That is actually fantastic to know! Makes me feel better about not knowing all the right things yet.

  • I spent the majority of last night in L&D triage for my breathing. Had to get an EKG, which was Cray. Anyways, because I've been having contractions and my Ute is irritable, they checked me to make sure I wasn't dilated. How much spotting is normal? I've never spotted after being checked before, ever. I'm still spotting this morning. I dunno if I should freak out or not. I have another UTI, so I dunno if I'm having blood in my urine or not.
  • @wildrainbow glad you got checked out. hope you feel better soon, but i know bronchitis can be a beast to recover from (i had it last pregnancy). can you call your ob today, to fill them in on last night and ask about the uti and spotting?
  • @highsteaks I already called them because with my history seeing spotting while pregnant sends me down the rabbit hole. They said normal was 24 to 48 hrs, any red blood and I needed to come in.
  • @wildrainbow i just saw your appointment update post in the other thread. i hope you can have a less eventful week this week and the spotting ends soon. man, you can not catch a break.
  • @wildrainbow hoping things take a turn for the better for you! You’ve had a rough few weeks and we’re all thinking of you!

My co-workers want to do something for me before I have the baby. I didn’t invite them to my shower, because I figured they would want to do something and didn’t want them to feel obligated to do both.

Our shower was this weekend and we got everything we really need, with the exception of diapers (and clothes, but we’re team green and I expect clothes as gifts when we have the baby and people know if it’s a boy or girl). Work asked me what I wanted to do, who to “invite,” etc. is it rude if I suggest something casual where people can bring diapers if they want to bring anything? I don’t  want people to feel like they have to contribute to a big gift.
  • @firsttimespartanmom I think that’s a great idea! Just say you’d love to stock up on basics like diapers, wipes, etc. You could even call if a “stock the diaper cabinet party”

So I already have a Spectra S2 breast pump from DD1 who is almost 2 now.  I used it 3-4 times a day for 6 or 7 months when I went back to work.  If I just replace the backflow protectors and other membranes, will it hold up through DD2 or should I get another Spectra S2?  My insurance covers the Spectra 9 Plus which is awesome for traveling due to it's size so it would be cool to have a more portable pump in addition to the S2..... but not at the expense of the S2 being less effective since it would still be my primary pump.  I am just worried about the motor and general suction holding up.

Anyone use their original breast pump through 2 kids?

  • @purelex I don't personally have experience since this is only my 2nd kid, but I ordered a new pump through my insurance and I'm planning to use the old one too. I was going to send the old one back to the company for recycling, but then realized it would be awesome to have a pump to keep at work and one to keep at home. The old one is 4 years old now and I EPed with it for 12 months. Near the end, it was still going pretty strong.
I think after only using your Spectra for 6 to 7 months, it should still be going strong too. Maybe you can plug it in and turn it on and just listen to it for a few minutes to see how it sounds? Obviously you can't pump, but you could at least make sure it still sounds normal. I don't know anything about the Spectras, but it sounds pretty cool to have the S2 and the 9, that way you have an easy portable option. Hopefully someone else can chime in who has real experience with this!

  • @purelex I used my Medela pump through two kids, and it held up great. I used it for a solid nine months for the first and for about four months for the second. I plugged it in the other day, and it still works great! It's now my backup though as I got an S1. So I think you're good to keep your S2 as your main pump and order another option for back up or travel :)

  • @soehlerk I'm like a week late in contributing to the holiday conversation, but I agree with @lifesabeach85 that you will never have a better excuse than a newborn to bow out of family holiday gatherings. Everyone wanting to hold your baby is totally understandable but also a legit concern during flu season when not everyone believes in the flu shot, and the whole critiquing of your parenting is also a valid concern. This was certainly the case for me during DD's first Thanksgiving. My MIL spent the whole time disappointed that DD was sleeping in a back bedroom, then telling us that she was colicky when really she just needed to poop, then telling us we shouldn't be swaddling her, etc. It was never ending. That + the logistics of breastfeeding/pumping in a house full of people when I was really still figuring everything out...it was so stressful that we instituted a family policy going forward that if you want to see us during the holidays, you've gotta come to us. Our DD's holiday memories are just as important as anyone else's and we don't want to spend every holiday season appeasing others expectations.
You can just politely tell family members "It would be so nice to spend the holidays together this year but with me just having had a baby, we are just much more comfortable taking it easy at home. We hope you'll understand." Don't forget postpartum is about your recovery as much as anything else. If you do end up going, baby wear, baby wear, baby wear. Good luck  <3
  • Does does anyone know if there’s a reason to delay flu shots (like maybe getting it later passes on the immunity better to the baby)? I’ve never heard this for the flu shot but on a Facebook group a bunch of women were saying they’re trying to hold off until October to get the flu shot and I can’t figure out why. (And now the thread’s commenting is turned off bc of course a Facebook discussion on flu shots turned into drama, lol). I was planning to get my shot this weekend but now am wondering if I should wait. I know I should ask my doctor but their office is impossible to get in touch with and I don’t have an appointment until next week so I was just wondering if anyone else has heard anything like this.
  • @iheartbooks I was told any time in 3rd tri is great. I got mine and DDs right when they came out.
  • @iheartbooks my daughter’s pedi said that they usually don’t start giving them out until Oct because the immunity you get from them wanes over the months and they don’t want you not to have strong immunity in Feb or March if there is a late flu surge. FWIW I got mine today, because my OB offered and I wanted to check that off my list before baby comes. Last year we had a big outbreak in my community in early November and a lot of people hadn’t gotten the shot yet so I’m not taking any chances!

From what I've read ACOG and the CDC say anytime during pregnancy should protect baby until they are old enough to get the flu vaccine themselves. I plan to get mine as soon as it's offered.

  • I have a question for those who have had c-sections. Baby is breech and I've tried a lot of things. I know there is still time, but I'm also trying to prepare for the likelihood of a c-section. Since this is my third baby and I have always gone into labor early, is it likely that I will be brought in for a scheduled c-section before my due date? Do most people wait to go into labor first and then just head on up to the hospital for it? I guess my concern is how long my labor will be. I labored for 19 hours with my first and only 6 to 7 with my second. If we experience the same decline in time, I'm scared it could be so rushed.

  • Spectra breast pump users (specifically S1), I have a question.

I want the Spectra S1 because I don’t want to have to rely on a power outlet, and would like my pump to be portable. I can get the S1 through insurance with a small upgrade charge, but I was informed it does not come with a tote. I’m assuming this is no big deal, right? I can just put it in my own tote? I’m probably looking too much into this, but I want to make sure I’m understanding what I’m getting. I can get the S2 plus for free, but thought the upgrade for S1 was worth it.
  • @wannaflickone - I was a scheduled c-section with DS due to his size (especially his head). How early did you go into labor with your other two? I believe the earliest most hospitals will schedule elective inductions/c-sections is 39 weeks. Maybe if baby is still breech as time goes on you can schedule one? Otherwise as soon as there are signs of labor I'd call and head in and they'll do one soon after you get there (especially if you are progressing quickly). Hopefully LO turns and you won't have to worry about it!

  • @iheartbooks I asked my doctor this at my appointment this week. She said they normally don’t do them in first tri, but otherwise I can get it whenever and it won’t make a difference. I work in a hospital so have to get it before Oct. 31, but think you can get it anytime!
