@sammierose464 I hate when parents refuse the Vit K injection. It makes me so uncomfortable.
You can’t reject it in NY. If you try, they call CPS, take custody of the baby, administer the shot and then I’m not sure what happens. I think they return custody to you, but there may be other stuff involved. I’ve seen conversations on some holistic Facebook groups about it and everybody is too afraid to try refusing, but there’s a lot of complaints about it.
@sammierose464 I am a SAHM and used to lose track of how long ago I showered all the time. I’ve gotten so much better about it, but it’s been crazy busy lately. I only know I showered on Tuesday because Monday is shower day for everybody in the house (swim lessons are that day so I make sure the kids shower before bed and I usually do after they’re done) and I was exhausted after dealing with the attitudes from the kids so I waited until the morning.
@purplegoldfish2 I have exactly the same problem. Sometimes I have to think way too hard to remember how long it's been and usually have to relate it to what I've done this week. Like this week I remember I washed my hair on Saturday because that's the day I got my hair done. But I did shower on Monday because that was my MFM appt. I meant to shower and wash my hair yesterday, but DD took her nap on top of me on the couch so that killed that idea.
For some reason, gentle parenting/attachment parenting overlaps extensively with the hyper crunchy parenting crowd so I've had many an opportunity to interact with anti-vaxxers over the years of parenting. I distinctly remember one conversation with a woman who was advising another mother to bombard her relative (who was vaccinating) with screenshots of the vaccine inserts that list scary potential side effects like death. I said to this woman "but aren't they required to list everything that happened to people in the study as possible side effects, whether they were related to the vaccine or not?" She responds, "Yes but the mother doesn't need to know that. She just needs to know how scary vaccines are!" So these people are willing to straight up lie in an effort to prevent people from vaccinating.
I also saw the most infuriating discussion in a birth group on FB the other day. A pregnant mother asked if anybody had gotten the "tetanus shot while they were pregnant? supposedly it prevents pertussis or something?" First of all, the phrasing of this question immediately shows that you have not done enough research on this question. Number 2, why are you consulting a bunch of strangers on the internet instead of doing that research yourself? And number 3, every single comment on the thread was from an anti-vaxxer trying to convince her that getting the TDAP while she was pregnant would KILL her baby. WTF. Meanwhile, I'm counting down the days to when I can get mine and I'm stressing out about my OB getting flu vaccines in on time so I can get mine before this baby is due.
I just CAN'T with anti-vaxxers.
The pediatrician we just switched to only accepts fully vaccinated patients. We recently took ODD there for the first time to get meds for her strep throat and when we went we found that they had 2 completely separate waiting rooms: one for sick kids, and one for well-child check-ups. Both of these things combined make me feel so much better about taking my NB who will be born in the peak of flu season to the pediatrician.

@mytrueloves I saw a similar post on TDAP the other day in a FB pregnancy group. The woman was asking for people who had received the vax while pregnant and how their babies were. Apparently, she just kept seeing posts about how people lost their babies after the shot. HUGE eye roll. If babies died every time a mother got the TDAP, then it wouldn't be given.
On the topic of posting every single side effect... I was reading the fact sheet on Gardasil someone had posted. It listed that x number of people experienced side effects, x number had died etc. But if you don't read the parentheses, you don't get the whole picture. Yeah, 250 some had side effects (out of 29k), but half of those received a placebo (AKA they got saline!). Yeah, 5 died...but then they list cause of death (motor vehicle accident being the most common). I promise you, the shot didn't cause that accident.
I'm not interested in someone waving the side effects on the insert in my face. I'm going to take that with a grain of salt because I know they're required to list everything that happened during the trial. I'm also not interested in discussions of "well my husband's sister got the TDAP while she was pregnant and a week later her son was stillborn!" That's a terrible tragedy but has nothing to do with the vaccine. Gardasil discussions make me ragey too. They have a vaccine out that can prevent an aggressive form of cancer! THAT IS AMAZING. ALL of my kids, regardless of sex, are going to be receiving the full course of Gardasil when they're old enough.

@mytrueloves that’s because anti-vax has become a cause. It isn’t about the truth anymore (if it ever was), it’s about getting people on your side so you win. Big anti-vaxxers can be called in for conferences and rallies and get paid $$$ so they have incentive to keep the controversy going. They’re “experts” and scare people into believing them. It’s like Food Babe - she puts outright lies out there and promotes products that contain the ingredients she says are bad. Why? Because she gets paid to do it. I am not one to say it’s all about the money and for a lot of people it isn’t, it’s that they have been deceived into believing this stuff and now they can’t admit that they are wrong or they refuse to even look into it and they need to get other people to join so that they can feel like they are right. I actually find the whole thing pretty sad. These people risk their kids because of ego.
@purplegoldfish2 ohhhh man, love me some food babe. I used to read her page just for the lolz. Having an engineering background, I can't with her "scientific" explanations, and I'm actually quite receptive and open to the "real food" movement. (Side note...Torn about organic stuff though...everything has pesticides, even organic...which apparently arent regulated as much as nonorganic pesticides and requires more pesticides to use because they aren't as concentrated.) But everything she says is a scare tactic and lies and designed to twist facts to make them seem worse than they are. Next she'll be touting about the dangers of dihydrogen monoxide! Damn those chemicals!
@mytrueloves I got the gardasil and have had no issues. Any health problems I have are genetic and were kicking in well before I got that shot. Even if they did jump start my autoimmune issues, I'd rather have those than cancer.
@jemmerjams Did you see her post about how flying is bad because they don’t pump 100% oxygen into the cabins? They, gasp, add nitrogen to it! Somehow she realized how dumb that was because the post was taken down, but not before people got screenshots of it. I’m actually surprised it came down because she usually deletes anything that questions her, so somebody close to her must have called her out on that one.
Re organics - that’s a hard one and since it’s so controversial it’s hard to know what’s true and what’s not. Are the organic pesticides really not as regulated as synthetic or is that something conventional farmers want people to believe? I find it hard to believe the FDA would just give organic pesticides a pass without regulating them. I know for a fact that not all organic foods are sprayed (there’s a local farm that’s certified organic and are also no spray), but I also know that not every farm follows that policy and it’s safer to assume grocery store organics were sprayed. Organic pesticides aren’t as effective, but I read it’s because they decompose faster so the food needs to be sprayed more often. If that’s the case, then it still might be better because by the time you get the food the pesticides on it may be broken down more than conventional... but what do those chemicals break down into? Something inert or something worse for you? All of the studies I’ve seen about pesticide levels in humans are conventional levels - eat organic and those levels go down... but they never monitored the pesticides that can be used on organic foods to see how much those increase. Generally we eat organic apples, berries and wheat and the rest conventional, unless we buy directly from a farm and then we will go with conventional (apples specifically I get organic because they don’t put the wax on the organic version, but when you pick them at a farm they also don’t have wax).
There’s too much to comment on individually re: vaccines, but I love that we have so many smart pro-vaccine women on here!! Hopefully we don’t have any secret anti-vaxxers that are just too scared to comment...
I’m feeling really distraught and concerned today about the retirement of Justice Kennedy, and the lasting impact that a Trump nominee could have on this country. I hope that by some miracle, the Democrats can hold out until the midterms are over, but I feel so hopeless and don’t know what to do.
Re: organics - the FDA and USDA are fairly...lax, lets just say, compared to other countries. In most european countries, you actually have to have many, many studies to show something is safe. In the US, you only need to prove its not harmful for a certain period. It allows a lot of things to get approved in the US that are seriously banned in other countries- many of which go into our food and beverages.
My H is confused why I'm not filling my days off with outings to see my friends. Who are these friends he thinks I have??? My only friends are in my O16 group and y'all.
@purplegoldfish2 omg I think I heard about that...so stupid. Yeah organics are tough, I just buy organic when/where I can, and try to buy local if it's there, because I feel like a smaller close to home farm would not need as much pesticides, and plus less emissions to get to me.
I told my sister about some weird watery discharge I've had all day and she responded with "go to L&D right NOW! You're probably leaking amniotic fluid!" Um thanks for freaking me out, sis.

If it makes anyone feel better, it’s too expensive for small farms to get certified organic. So many times you might be eating organic stuff (especially local) they just can’t brand it as such.
Today we finally got the dog to the dermatologist. Poor thing has a really bad ear infection. So I have antibiotics and a wash for that. He also had some breakouts from his allergies, so oral antibiotics and an antibiotic mousse for his jowels and feet. We go back on the 9th for allergy testing.
The good news (I guess) is that he doesn't think it's food based, so we can stop the super expensive Rx food he's on. However, we are probably looking at monthly allergy shots.
The bathroom is basically done. Before and after pictures in the spoiler. On the left of the before picture is a linen closet that was removed to make space. Both pictures are taken from roughly the same perspective. (For reference, the bathtub didn’t move.)
(Probably should have turned on the other light for the last pic...)
@mytrueloves if you continue leaking discharge that genuinely looks/feels like water for another 12 hours or more I would go into your OB and have them swab just to make sure. Probably nothing, but you never know.
I keeping an eye on it but I don't think it's amniotic fluid. It's watery but not like water, if that makes sense? It happens every time I wipe but there's no trickle or flow to it. I do plan on calling my doc if it continues though.

@mytrueloves I think you’re ok then. I got rushed to L&D a few times with Z and every time they laughed at my OB for sending me. If you’re leaking, it would be a constant flow.
I’ve been so MIA sorry! We are in California. It was supoosed to be a Baby free week long trip, but at the last minute I couldn’t leave DD. Sooooo it turned into a family trip. She’s having a blast so I’m glad we brought her...a week just seemed so long. We will be going away for three nights alone in August though. I missed you ladies! Looking forward to catching up.
I'm doing okay! No more discharge. Still feel like butt from this strep that never ends though lol our roommate is moving out over the course of the weekend and today he moved out all his furniture. I moved in after the roommate had been living here a while and I had no idea how much of the furniture was his lol. We're now down a dining table and chairs, coffee table, end tables, trash cans, and litter boxes. On the bright side, the house is starting to feel like mine now and I have ton more cupboard space to work with lmao

So i just spent almost 10 min on hold with a potential pediatrician's office, just for them to tell me to call back when the baby is born. Um, ok....that was helpful. But it's a highly recommended office so I guess I'll deal...

Do they even read the inserts for the other medications they/ their kids take - or do they also skip the antibiotics when their kids get strep throat?
Also, my crib drama continues. Yesterday my friend delivered it! AND I AM SO EXCITED.
