I just can't imagine. a disease that hasn't been seen there in 18 years that can criple someone has come back. Yes, I know that vaccines in that county are limited, but it's still terrible.
ETA: DH just told me that SS's best friend and his 1yo brother aren't vaccinated. It really makes me question if I want my baby around them before he can get most of his shots.
@sammierose464 yeah hard no on that one. I wouldn’t be comfortable with having a baby around unvaccinated kids. I’m not even particularly comfortable having a newborn around vaccinated kids that aren’t mine. Kids are ridiculously germy disease spreading creatures.
I definitely side eye people whenever I find their kids are not vaccinated. I also side eye my coworker who, wanted to do the delayed schedule, but “hasn't gotten around to getting them all.” If you tell me your kids not vaccinate, I’m not cool with them being around my unvaccinated NB. I breathed a sigh of relief after the first round of shots last time.
I’m not cool with my kids spending frequent time around non-vaccinated children ever. First, it takes years before they are fully vaccinated. The first set of shots means nothing. You need them all. Second, vaccines are only 99.whatever percent effect (nothing is ever 100%). In a fully vaccinated community, that tiny percentage with failed vaccines are basically still protected because the viruses aren’t being circulated in the population. This whole anti vaccine movement puts that tiny portion of people at risk (plus those that cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons). I’m not going to find out if my kids are in that minuscule minority by exposing them to lord knows what.
Super happy CA passed the law that all kids in public school must be vaccinated. Religious exemptions no longer accepted. Medical necessity only.

Don’t feel bad at all. If those people choose not to vaccinate they also have to live with the consequences of that: that they and their kids will miss out on meeting people. Fuck their feelings. If they are true “believers” they have to accept it!
@sammierose464 I wouldn't allow my kid around someone I knew wasn't vaccinated. It's always the first question I ask when looking at daycares. I have a coworker with a son who just completed 4th grade and half of the kids in his class weren't vaccinated! My mouth hit the floor when she told me.
I’m confused on getting to drink the drink at home then go in for the blood draw. Do y’all not have to have blood drawn before you drink? My OB’s office has me come in first thing, draw my blood, drink, then have another blood draw after an hour. I also can’t have anything except water after midnight.
@tlmill they aren’t taking a blood test before for me. Just drink and then come in. Doc said I didn’t have to fast, but to have high protein low carb food only. I’ll probably fast or have like one egg.
@tlmill That sounds more like a hybrid between the one and three hour test. The one hour test, you don’t typically need any baseline blood work. Just 1 hour post drink. If you fail that, three hour test gets a baseline, then drink, then blood draw again at certain intervals (usually one and two hour mark).
Got my instructions today. No food for 2 hours before test. So not a full fast. Same as last time.
@tlmill I can't have anything after midnight. My gd test is Tueday at 8:45am. I have to finish the drink by 7:45 then they draw my blood at exactly 8:45. This is my 3rd time and my ob always give me the drink and instructions at my appt before testing. It's crazy to me that testing for gd varies from doctor to doctor.
@tinattt23 interesting. The OB I was seeing at the beginning of my pregnancy before I switched back to this one does the 1 hour test the same way as my current OB. My little sister’s 1 hour test was done the same way as well.
I wish we had a law about vaccines here in NE. Our Dr office has a poster that has, is it, 20 diseases that are preventable by vaccinating. I do not understand why someone would look at that and think, 'eh, I'll just risk it.' and I get really stabby when my children are exposed to it. I have a couple friends that do a delayed schedule, and I even think that's weird. If there's medical reason to only do one at a time, that's totally understandable, but why on earth would you prolong your child's suffering if not necessary? I do feel like I'm pretty lucky with our doctors. They're pretty careful to not give shots if the child is sick at all, and keep track of schedules so I know if we're on track. After I say all that, I'm behind on DD-6's shots. I've GOT to go get her kindergarten shots!
I'm now second guessing our ped choice too. He's known for being "accommodating" with vaccines. I've heard he's amazing, and he's the dr who will see G at the hospital. However, now I don't like the idea of sitting in those waiting rooms....
@sammierose464 I found a ped group that will not accept patients that dont vaccinate on schedule unless there is a medical reason documented. I am legit so excited. Its actually becoming very common in the ped world to not accept unvaccinated kids, at least around here.
What sucks is that the ped I wanted is retiring this year. He was mine and is currently my siblings. He had just announced it I guess when my OB asked if I had decided on one. So I had decided on this one because I know at least 3 families that see him and love him.
Crib update.. DH decided Tuesday to try and sand out the damaged parts of the crib since it was only on the front panel. This of course was after he had made a big deal about how he didn't want to deal with it and didn't have the time or desire to do it (men...). So i text my mom to let her know he was going to try (we had previously told her we were just going to get the crib from my friend in Chicago).
About a half hour later DH gets a series of texts that make him exasperated. He won't tell me anything. Eventually spills to me that whoever it is started with "Don't tell Sam" and sent screen shots of cribs from Sam's Club. So I'm assuming now my mother is buying us a new crib, but I'm not supposed to know.
My mom is so funny. For years it was "I don't need grandchildren. I'm good", but I think it was mostly because of my siblings being so young. Once SS came around you could tell she loved being a grandma. Now you can tell she's super excited about her "baby" having a baby. I get a new text every week of something she's bought!
@sammierose464 - My mom was kind of the same way. I knew she wanted grandkids, but she never mentioned it to me, and just sort of adopted the kids that were adjacent to our family as hers. I think, in my case, she didn’t want me having kids with my ex. Now that she is going to finally have a grandkid, she is totally excited.
For the record, the two Moms I know of who are 100% anti-vaccines take their kids to a chiropractor, not a pediatrician. One of the Moms said that pediatricians are for sick kids, not healthy kids...I’ve also noticed that people who do not vaccinate always a quick to claim that vaccines haven’t eradicated disease, the .001% who have failed vaccines, vaccine injury, and all the harmful chemicals in vaccines(even though many of them are not used anymore). They drink their own koolaide so to speak. They also don’t believe the CDC or AAP are reliable sources and then send you URLs to doctors with very controversial beliefs.
I don’t get it. The way I see it, it is risk benefit. And the benefits out weigh the risks by a lot! I’m not denying that bad things happen, but more than likely the worst thing that will happen is a low grade fever.
I just drank the glucola did the 1hr. I’m sure this is a UO but I kind of thought it tasted good. Like koolaid or Squeeze-it- both drinks I was not allowed to have as a kid. Anyone else think so?
Also, I just can't with anti-vaxxers and I've had to deal with them way too much lately. I'm too tired to add to this conversation, but I love that we're all on the same page.
As a psychologist with back ground in decision making sciences... risk vs benefit analysis seems so common sense to me. It's hard for me to grasp people who see the small risk of a vaccine and think it's worse than their child getting the disease.
I watched a video on the Vitamin K shot the other day. The dr explained why it's important (lack of Vit K can cause blood clotting issues, newborns do not have enough vit k in their system to help if a bleeding issue comes up, a bleeding issue can KILL YOUR CHILD), why newborns lack vit K (it can not easily be passed via placenta OR breast milk, our bodies only produce so much via gut bacteria that newborns don't have, the rest is ingested from our food), and how the shot is more effective than any other method (it is not easily available in the US in oral form, it must be taken in 3 doses over a few months orally, it is not as effective/absorbed as well).
A women commented saying "it's a black box warning" so she refuses to give it to her child. So I read the science on it. The black box warning is there because in some adults who received too much too fast intravenously they experience anaphalaxis (I know that's spelled wrong). It reported that NO newborn has had this happen, it was a rare occurrence among adults and was predominately due to how much was received and how it was administered (AKA too much of a "good thing" too fast).
In my opinion, the VERY small risk of my child having a minor reaction (and even smaller risk of infant death) to the shot is a better chance than risking my child's LIFE by not giving them the vitamin. And even if my child didn't die from an internal bleed that could not clot, it could severely damage their brain and functions.
My grandfather died of a massive stroke that occurred out of no where. When it comes to bleeding and the brain, I don't f*** around.
I was told I couldn't drink water after I had the glucola because it could dilute the results. The nurse was even unsure when she saw I had been drinking water prior to the test.
Also- telling a pregnant lady not to drink water??? And it is sugar; your body is going to absorb it either way... (my totally unscientific opinion...)
@purplegoldfish2 I’m in the same boat with you re: being a pregnant bridesmaid. I am due 4 days after the wedding. It’s my husband’s brother so I don’t have the option of backing out. Same plan here, chose a bump and bra-friendly dress, and flat shoes. My mom has offered to come watch the baby if she comes early. But I’m really really hoping baby stays put until her due date!
@purplegoldfish2 It's been since Tuesday for me. And maybe Sat or Sun since I washed my hair? I worked from home yesterday and didn't have any time to shower. The goal is to wash today and shave tomorrow before our trip. Maybe that's a FFTC...
@sammierose464 I hate when parents refuse the Vit K injection. It makes me so uncomfortable.
what I find interesting is people who are fine with the "oral" version but not the shot version. While I don't know the ingredients in either, they are going to contain similar ingredients/preservatives/etc.
