@kissableviv The midwifery I go to says to come in 8 hours after water breaks if you are a ftm and 16 hours if you are a stm, unless labor is progressing faster. My coworker said her OB told her to go in right away. So it obviously varies.
Is the NST that band that goes around your belly? I am not even sure what it measures? Forgive my ignorance but I think I only had one with my first while I was in active labor (as soon as I arrived at the birthing center) with my first. I just remember them having to run it a few times but the last thing I wanted to do was sit in one place. I think I kept messing up the readings.
My 34 week appt is tomorrow. Three weeks ago they told me that I hit 30 pounds of weight gain and didn’t want me to gain much more. I splurged a few times but overall ate healthier and went on more walks. My weight has been maintained but I am stressing about getting lectured again tomorrow. I packed a healthy chicken and veggie soup today for lunch. I ended up gettting a peanut butter sandwich at the cafe but I am not sure if I was really hungry or if mentally I felt deprived! Anyway, I just don’t want to eat a lot of sodium and spike my weight with water weight.
@chaser61 What is with the MWs and OBs for you ladies bugging out about the weight gain? I'm fortunate that my OB has never been concerned with my weight gain on its own. I'm on track to hit 200lbs again this pregnancy. I think my body just likes to gain weight. I don't have GD or high BP or other complications, so maybe that's why she doesn't care.
@kissableviv I think I remember you saying you're not high risk in this pregnancy, right? I'm still very surprised you have all of these appointments now and that your OB is even mentioning pitocin and C-sections and whatnot. I've been low-risk every time so far and I have never had an NST except during labor, and my OB/hospital is fairly low intervention so C-sections are a last resort. I even asked my OB last week what the plan would be for a breech baby and she said we would schedule a version between weeks 37-39, and if that didn't work and baby's head was measuring small enough on an ultrasound, they would be OK with attempting a breech vaginal delivery! (Which is something I'm more scared of than surgery)
@chaser61 - NST is a non-stress test. It's just a heartrate monitor for the baby (on a band that goes around belly). You usually also push a button marking when you feel the baby move so that they can ensure the heartrate is increasing with movement, and that the baby is moving enough.
Our OB's and midwives work at the same hospital and both offer the same advice to go to the hospital once the water breaks. Obviously it is dependent on contractions and progession or not but when my DS's water broke (they broke it for me) he came within 8 hours and I was a STM. My SIL's water broke as a FTM and my niece was born 4 hours later so..... it's not always a guarantee you will have any time from water breaking to baby being born. Just my two cents!
@chaser61 it is basically fetal movement/heartbeat decelerations and accelerations monitoring. I then do a quick ultrasound to check on fluid. ETA: I hope you don't stress out too much about weight as it also fluctuates a lot day by day, at least that's what I have noticed!
@flockofmoosen3 yes I am considered low risk, BUT, this stupid marginal cord insertion is what apparently triggered all these appointments as of week 35. It's a complete overkill, but insurance is covering, so I guess I don't mind, but I am also lucky I am close to my doctor's office and very flexible with work (plus no toddler/child to take care of). Otherwise, things may be different!
ETA: Yay for breech vaginal delivery, I hear very few doctors are trained to handle those or feel confident about it so I think it's great to hear someone considering it. I hope you don't have to resort to it and baby is/stays head down.
The C-section talk was mostly a "ok you have no issues, let's lightly talk about why people may have to have a c-section" kind of talk. The pitocin, ugh, I think that's him being very much in favor on starting it sooner than later. To be honest I never have major questions for him and so far things have been uneventful, so a lot of it is just talking for the sake of it I think.
@flockofmoosen3 a breech vaginal delivery! That is amazing! I was just saying the other day that I thought it was weird that something like pre-e was serious enough to induce preterm, but they'd let you go for quite awhile in that induction (like our own @carsonraynee) before having a c-section, and then automatically call a breech baby and make you have a c-section when it is possible to deliver SOME babies in breech position.
My mom kept trying to tell me this weekend that I needed to ask to see my placenta because "it's so cool". I told her that I was going to vomit if she didn't stop talking about it.
Lmao! My mom asks me if I've lost my mucus plug every time I talk to her. I seriously might lose my shit if she asks one more time *gag*
@kissableviv it’s so crazy how different care is from doctor to doctor. My MW/OB practice told me not to come in after my water broke in the middle of the night with DS- they actually wanted me to wait until morning to get checking at the OFFICE. Had I done that DS would’ve been born in my bathroom- but you never know!
@flockofmoosen3 breech vaginal delivery! Eek! I was looking into that when LO was breech, I think I’d go for it!
@flockofmoosen3 I would soooo consider a breech vaginal delivery. Our baby boy is breech (or maybe he has turned...I can't tell, but US on Friday!) and I would still really like to have a vaginal delivery. Only one doctor in our practice does breech deliveries though and I think it's only in emergency/surprise breech cases. But, the thought of it also scares me. I am just going to go upside down for the next few days and hope for the best!
@MichelleAG05 Add me to the not wanting/needing to see the placenta group. I know it's important and serves an amazing function, but other than meeting my baby, I don't really feel the need to take a look at things that were once inside my body. Gross. Pass! No judgement at all to those that are intrigued by it or want to make use of it by encapsulating it. I'm just the squeamish kind!
@flockofmoosen3 My body loves packing on the pounds during pregnancy too. No matter of sticking within my calorie and nutrition goals or working out 4 + times a week per the usual seems to matter. I've only had one midwife comment on my weight because she assumed I was eating cheeseburgers for every meal, H shut her down pretty hard on that and it's not been in issue since. With the tonnage I've gained, I can only imagine how much worse the damage would be if I was eating cheeseburgers for every meal.
omg crazy day just catching up now @SmashJam - so sorry DH is being like that - +1 he's lucky he's only on the couch - also funny but I did the same thing as the "crab cruise" story about 6 years ago and got really drunk having no idea that DH bought matinee broadway tickets and brunch reservations as a birthday surprise...that early train ride sucked balls.... @foxbaby2016 not going to lie - jealous as hell - maybe it's that burst you supposedly get at the end!! I don't remember that from last time... @MichelleAG05 I saw mine with DD - i thought it was kind of cool/weird...but DH accidentally looked and still has flashbacks... @chaser61 I will add on to MichelleAG05's great explanation that (at least at my OB) they also track for contractions as well as fetal HR. My office doesn't do U/S with every NST and aren't standard unless you are overdue (standard is 2 NST's before induction - hence why called for when overdue) or called for by whatever high risk condition you have. @kissableviv I know a lot of PP have weighed in - but really just want to encourage not waiting after water breaks to go in. It's very rare to have your water breaking be the first sign of labor without contractions (thank you hollywood for lying to us), and +1 to @acunamatada while Dr/MW can quote statistics and timelines, every woman/pregnancy is different. Both myself and my daughter were born 1 hour after water broke to FTMs - true chances are you'll have hours, but what if you don't? When I was a FTM the guidelines from OB were call at 1 min contractions 5 min apart for an hour, and go to L&D if contractions are severe enough you need pain management or water breaks.
@flockofmoosen3 I am low risk too. I think when they started the program, promoting healthy eating was part of it but over time they just wait until you hit the weight goal and then fuss at you.
@foxbaby2016 Funny. My mom has asked me and other people if they have their mucus plug yet in early pregnancy. Wtf?
Thanks all for the NST info. I did have one during labor and that is all. I just remember complaining about it because I wanted to walk around and not be strapped to it.
Re breech vaginal deliveries, I think a lot of doctors and midwives won’t try it because of medical malpractice insurance reasons. Most companies won’t cover it. That’s what I’ve read anyway. So as a result I’m sure many just aren’t trained in it anymore. I’d totally try it if I had a breech baby and willing provider but I completely understand just going for the c section instead.
Re water breaking...my midwife group has the following guidelines: -if liquid is brown/there are signs of meconium, call/go in right away. -if liquid is clear, no contractions, not GBS+, and it’s the middle of the night, call at 8am and they will schedule you to come into the office to be checked and advise from there -if GBS+, call/go on right away -if liquid is clear, GBS-, and it’s daytime, call for a heads up but don’t rush right in, they’ll have you come to the office to be checked. -if water breaking is accompanied by contractions call/go in right away if 3 mins apart for FTM or 5 mins apart for STM (assuming no meconium or GBS)
So yeah every practice really does things differently! Personally I plan to labor at home as long as I can and will have a doula at home with me helping me figure out (along with my midwife of course) when I should go in. If my water breaks and nothings happening and I’m not GBS+ and no meconium, I will stay home and walk/do squats/rest/nest/whatever else feels right until it’s time to go get checked out by the midwife and decide next steps from there. If no contractions within about 12 hours it would be time to start pitocin.
Also @kissableviv some doctors reallllly push the pit and it’s aggravating but just know they need your consent. In my experience some OBs and nurses will just say “okay it’s time for X” and you’re like huh? Luckily you’ll have a doula to help make sure you’re giving informed consent every step of the way. If they want to give you pit to speed things up and there’s no real risk/reason to, don’t be afraid to say no thanks, let’s wait and see what my body does as long as it’s safe.
@zande2016 I know I've said this before but really, you have SO much info!
If my water broke first this time around I don't know what I'd do, even if I knew my practices guidelines (I don't yet...that's how not worried I am about going into labor on my own, lol). It was the general consensus at my old practice that I should come in the MINUTE I think I'm in labor or my water breaks, no waiting, since I have short labors (both 6 ish hours). my water broke during transition the first time and never the second time, so I would be like, wait...is birth imminent?! I would be so worried that I would progress fast and probably like, drive to the hospital and walk around there to speed things up just in case, lol. No one has really advised me in this practice, I'll have to ask when I go in in a couple weeks.
Haha @smashjam well my group actually has a printed sheet that lays out their guidelines, probably mostly because they run a free standing birth center in addition to delivering at the hospital so they need to make things really clear. I think when you have a history of quick labors it’s a different situation and they’d want to know sooner. And it is true most women go into labor and start contracting first, then their water breaks later, idk why the movies always portray it in the much rarer way.
Okay I’m really uncreative even when I’m not exhausted with pregnancy brain. Now I really feel like I can’t think. So I need some inspiration. What (if anything) are people getting their SO for Father’s Day? I’m on a budget but still want to do something nice....we are taking our toddler to the wiggles concert that day lol ...with my mom too...yeah didn’t realize when I bought the tickets that it was fathers day. My H is actually really excited about it haha.
NST looked good. Talked to the OB for quite a while about earlier c section. He expressed concern over issues feeding prior to 38 weeks which would possibly extend a NICU stay (especially since it's likely LO would/will have low bloodsugars at birth). We also discussed a hospital stay for monitoring/to buy more time or daily NSTs. Also the likelihood of cord compression vs cord issues (no real definitive way to know). Settled on an US tomorrow with the MFM to really get a close look at the cord.
I really like my OB and he was honest that they don't have all the answers. And it's easy to say in hindsight that they should have waited to deliver if the kid has issues post birth, or delivered sooner if something happens while trying to buy more time. My MFM is much more aggressive with preventative medicine so I'm anxious to see how tomorrow goes and what decisions we make.
@zande2016 whiskey, golf shirt & golf socks. Simple and all stuff he’ll use. We got my FIL a wireless meat thermometer he can use with his rotisserie and we got my dad golf passes.
@TalesOfASocialIntrovert I’m sorry they weren’t able to give you more definitive answers but I’m glad you have a solid plan in place! I hope LO looks good on your scan tomorrow!
@zande2016 I am putting together a collage of photos of our family, printing it, and framing it. I did it a couple years ago through Shutterfly and he loved it but honestly I can design and print one identical to it myself for way cheaper. DH also specifically asked for a spatula rest for the grill set up on the patio.
@TalesOfASocialIntrovert I was going to ask if being admitted and monitored at the hospital until c section date could an option...i hope the MFM has some answers or at least guidance for you tomorrow!
@flockofmoosen3 that sounds really sweet...and also like maybe too much energy for me right now lol. I thought about some sort of art project with my son for him but I don’t know if I have the energy. I do love photo gifts though, I did a photo collage last year that he loved. @comealongponds practical gifts are always a good option...maybe I’ll hit up the tennis store (as much as I hate to feed his tennis addiction).
@zande2016 he getting his dishes washed lol jk idk really. He gonna buy wood for his first project so maybe i just won’t nag at him. We literally didn’t do anything for mother’s day and we normally are too lazy to celebrate stuff for each other.
@zande2016 no clue what I’m going to do. We’re first time parents and he definitely isn’t expecting anything but I feel like I should get something.
Ordered an Enso ring today. My fingers are starting to swell overnight some and I’m thinking I may not be able to wear my rings much longer Currently by the time I get ready they fit but I’m not sure that will last. Anyone else have to get silicone rings or alternative/bigger bands?
@flockofmoosen3 I didn’t even think of that! I may have to do that too. It would be nice to have them with me even if I’m wearing an Enso ring on my finger.
@TalesOfASocialIntrovert I know it's not a perfect answer - but glad they are listening to your concerns and actively discussion options and exploring!
@zande2016 so this probably isn't helpful because you said on a budget - but I totally got DH a smart watch to go with his new phone so he might actually see my text/call if/when I go into labor and need his ass home lol he has a habit of wandering at work without his cell and I can't get him in emergencies so it's totally self-served :-P +1 for photo gifts though - and I tried finger painting with my 2 year old this weekend as a father's day art project - do not recommend to any other pregnant ladies out there...unless you can do it outside and they don't mind being hosed off after...
@zande2016 It wouldn't be my first choice. Since I'm a T1 Diabetic, that would mean they monitor my numbers and administer insulin through an IV drip. This also means they would be checking my blood glucose every hour, round the clock. At that point, I'd rather just deliver a few days earlier vs all that mess. If I were not as far along, I might consider but since I'm 37 weeks, that seems unreasonable to me.
ETA: Didn't mean for that to sound like you're being unreasonable @zande2016! I actually told my OB today that it's not something I would want to do given my specific situation.
@ashbub714 I ordered silicone rings off Amazon - I think I grew out of mine around 28 weeks I just put my rings in the safe since I don't wear much jewelry.
Me: 31 DH: 34 Married: April 2016 TTC December 2016 BFP 2/28/17 // CP 3/1/17 MFI Diagnosis: Aug 2017 BFP 11/1/17 // DS born 6/18 TTC January 2019 BFP 3/21/19 // D&C (MMC) 5/8/19
@gingerbride26 lol yeah as soon as the toddler art project popped into my head I was like come on, who are we kidding here. I thought a handprint coffee mug would be cool but I keep imagining the mess.
@ashbub714 with my first pregnancy my hands swelled so much I had to stop wearing my rings at 26 weeks, and wore them on a chain as a necklace. Then even when the swelling went down after I had him, I put on a lot of weight during breastfeeding and never fit back into my rings until a few months before I got pregnant with this one. Then within a couple months of this pregnancy they were back to not fitting! I am stubborn and refuse to get them sized, so my H ended up buying me a bigger simple gold band for Valentine’s Day as a temporary wedding ring until I lose the baby weight. The silicon bands seem like a really comfy option though!
@TalesOfASocialIntrovert that sounds like a horrible system for managing T1 in hospital! Is it like that no matter why youre admitted? We follow home schedule for testing and use injectable insulin (often the patients own pen if they prefer it over our vials and needles) at my hospital.
@TalesOfASocialIntrovert yeah it doesn’t sound like an ideal situation, I’d hate being on hospital bed rest and at this point a few days difference doesn’t seem like a big deal to just deliver you a little earlier, but I thought if they refused to deliver earlier maybe they’d want to still have you there to monitor. Honestly sometimes I lurk around what to expect and I see so many women talking about induction at 37 weeks for either GD or hypertension (not pre E, just elevated BP), so it seems like some doctors have no issue with 37 weeks. I guess they’re all different though.
@ashbub714 my rings got tight months ago - which they never did with DD - and I got a silicon ring...and then that got too tight as well a few weeks ago...it even left a line of weird irritated/calloused skin so I joke i have a permanent wedding band now. Guess I should have ordered 2 sizes up instead of 1.5
@comealongponds I don't know if it's hospital wide or just L&D but they use a system called Endotool (which I understand is only otherwise used in the ICU). When I delivered there with my daughter, I had my own dedicated nurse (she had no other patients to care for) bc they considered me so complicated. It sounds like they just don't see a lot of T1 pregnant diabetics so they're all a little cautious and naive about how to treat me.
@TalesOfASocialIntrovert ugh that’s brutal. I wonder, if you had to be admitted for monitoring like that, if you could negotiate a treatment plan where you manage your diabetes and they manage the rest of your care? I’d assume they’d want to switch to their system for delivery and post partum but maybe they’d be willing to work with you!
Looks like H will get to come home for a July 2nd induction as of right now!! Which means 3 weeks until our baby girl arrives, so anxious to meet her!!
Re breech vaginal deliveries, I think a lot of doctors and midwives won’t try it because of medical malpractice insurance reasons. Most companies won’t cover it. That’s what I’ve read anyway. 100% this! Like you my plan is to be at home for as long as I can. I doubt my water would break just like that with no contractions but it's a possibility. In general I am bothered by how much pit is pushed but as you said that's why the doula is there! And next time he brings it up I will let him know my plan. The color of the water is also super important I mean I don't want an infection of course but it's all about knowing when something is absolutely necessary.
@TalesOfASocialIntrovert I'm glad things looked good today and I hope you find something that will work for you in terms of next steps. I know it's a bit complicated at the moment but you are in the home stretch.
Re: father's day, I think I mentioned this in a random but I got my DH snorkeling equipment for roughly$70. We'll spend the day at the beach and then I'll make him King ranch chicken for dinner and I plan on buying a small cheesecake because it's his favorite:)
It’s 2 am and DS started back with his cough attack. I’ll need to call the pedi to see if it’s safe to continue the allergy med everyday. But also H didn’t listen to me about sucking his boogers last night so guess what, I woke him up (since he can’t hear DS) and told him that he’s gonna go with me to give DS cough medicine since he failed to suck his boogers. This is what happens when he skips on things. He got up luckily without a fight. I’m gonna keep doing this each time he doesn’t do his part. ok now hopefully back to sleep.
My alarm went off 30 min ago and I'm still laying in bed trying to find the motivation and energy to get up. I wish I would have brought my laptop home yesterday and I would stay right here and work... I'm considering calling in sick.

And it is true most women go into labor and start contracting first, then their water breaks later, idk why the movies always portray it in the much rarer way.
feel like I can’t think.
@TalesOfASocialIntrovert I’m sorry they weren’t able to give you more definitive answers but I’m glad you have a solid plan in place! I hope LO looks good on your scan tomorrow!
DH also specifically asked for a spatula rest for the grill set up on the patio.
Ordered an Enso ring today. My fingers are starting to swell overnight some and I’m thinking I may not be able to wear my rings much longer
ETA: Didn't mean for that to sound like you're being unreasonable @zande2016! I actually told my OB today that it's not something I would want to do given my specific situation.

37 weeks for either GD or hypertension (not pre E, just elevated BP), so it seems like some doctors have no issue with 37 weeks. I guess they’re all different though.
My alarm went off 30 min ago and I'm still laying in bed trying to find the motivation and energy to get up. I wish I would have brought my laptop home yesterday and I would stay right here and work... I'm considering calling in sick.
