I have my mother's middle name and I think it's pretty cool. I'm not sure about how I would feel about my sibling also having the same middle name. It makes it less special in my opinion.
Helpful hint - if you change your username, we’ll be able to recognize you. As it’s difficult to differentiate between the millions of Knotties. Good luck! And welcome.
@derbysquirrel Just to warn you, kids in middle school & high school will probably change Mary Jean to Mary Jane. As in marijuana. My hs students were bugging a Mary Jean about that yesterday.
@juliebird6 Felix is a great name! It’s NMS, but I think it’s super cute!
I also call DS by first and MN a lot. They flow well together and it just comes out naturally a lot. I know that isn’t always the norm though. If we do end up using Leo James, our top contender, I’ll probably call this one by both a lot, too. It kind of just rolls off my tongue being only 2 syllables!
I guess my stance is will other people call them by their middle names? If you like the two together, and will call them by both, then it doesn't matter. But if you want others to call them by their middle name, then i guess it's worth asking if other people think they go well together.
@legallykate Olivia Evelyn are both lovely names but I’m not a fan of the first name ending in a vowel and the middle name beginning in a vowel, because to me it makes it awkward to say. I actually like Evelyn Olivia better, would you switch them?
@legallykate I love Olivia Evelyn. Olivia was a top contender for me, because my dad's name is Oliver. But DH's best friend's parents have a dog named Olivia. Eyeroll. They don't even live in the same state as us.
@melbel0824 - I need more information - did your DH nix the name because his best friend's parents' dog shares the name? If you love the name that would be one I would battle for!
@legallykate - Olivia Evelyn is lovely! @calimom2524 - Paige is one of my all-time favorite girl names! We can't use it because DH's last name wouldn't work at all with it.

I like that too and would do it but I think DH is opposed to using Evelyn as a first because in his family they usually use the middle name spot for deceased loved ones (he is Jewish) and it's his dad's mom's name so he thinks his mom would be miffed if we made it *more* of an honor (his brother used their mom's mother's name as his daughter's middle). Family politics!

Um yeah, that's pretty much the worst excuse to nix a name ever.

@melprop Yeah, maybe, but I don't really care about that too much. Kids can be dicks no matter what your name is, so it's impossible to try and plan around that. Hopefully I can teach my kid to have a bit of a sense of humor and enough social skills that it doesn't become too much of an issue.

Plus by then it could be legal everywhere and won't seem like such an insult to say. Also, it doesn't really matter what your kid's name is, if a bully is out there they will find a way to make fun of them. It's pretty sad.
@calimom2524 I live in Oregon and Colorado. Pot is legal here, and has been decriminalized for as long as I've been alive. There are worse things to be made fun of for, including our last name if anyone is so inclined.

Yeah I live in California so I get it, I also used to partake and it's been hard giving it up. I'd much rather be associated with Mary Jane than anything else. My maiden name starts with No so my poor brother growing up was always "Danny NoFriends". Kids are so mean.
My last name is conducive to marijuana jokes, and I survived. I got pretty good at learning how to roll my eyes, a skill that has served me well in many other contexts

Re: the topic of having kids "go" by their middle name. I am a professor and I can never remember the names of the students who go by their middles. Granted, I have about 60 students in my class, and I don't take roll every day to learn the names, so it's hard (I do learn about 45 of the names each semester). Anyhow, I've noticed that I often hesitate on calling certain students by name because I don't want to get it wrong (I'm thinking "Does he/she go by the middle name? I can't remember!") They usually tell you the first day of class when you are trying to remember 8,000 other things, so it doesn't stick and usually what happens is they just don't correct you until late in the semester you overhear them being called as something else and you realize that you have been calling them by the "wrong" name all semester long. This is my experience, at least. Plus, to avoid confusion, they often turn in their papers with their first name, so you think you are calling them by the name they want (since that's what they put on their paper.) Anyways, from my perspective, it's super confusing and they'll either be called by their "wrong" name, or not called by name. In fact, I have a student now whose name is either John Paul or Paul John and I honestly don't remember which is his first, which is his middle (he goes by his middle.) I mean, yes, I can look it up on the class roster online, but in the middle of class, that's not an option. So when I call on him, it's usually just a head nod/point rather than by name. Just some food for thought!
OK we have another name DH said "love it" to. Fia. It's from the old Irish word Fiadh (said the same way). I would drop the dh though. A lady a work saw it on an Irish baby name list.

Well what does the old Irish word mean?!

Is Lola awful? I thought of it as I drifted off to sleep last night and it’s sticking with me. Haven’t even brought it up to DH yet. It sounds nice with our last name.
Obvs. I even sing it in my head the same awkward way she does on stage. I think I watch too much Friends but I blame Netflix for adding it, it's at my fingertips! So easy.
I am re-watching the entire series of Friends with DH, he had never seen them and likes them, it is fun to watch them with a newb although I think I often annoy him by being like "oh this one is THE BEST" or laughing right before the punchline.
