Re: Names you actually want opinions on

  • @mrs_drc_rn I love the Irish names. My family is Irish so we have so many of them in our family tree. DH and I considered Saoirse for a girls name.

  • @ecwk I feel like an idiot, but—how is it pronounced?? It looks pretty!
  • In my head I'm pronouncing it like Cersei...like from GoT.

It's Seer-sha. The actress Saoirse Ronan says "Sur-sha" but that's because she has a weird accent. Also I am reluctant to use this name purely because of pronunciation issues in the US but who knows if we will be living here forever. DH and I selected it lonnnnnnnnnnnnnnngggggggggggg ago way before we were even engaged and it means Freedom and we are sort of set on it!

    That’s SO pretty.

  • @ecwk That is my biggest worry that if we used it no one here would know how to say it. I have a name that gets mispronounced all the time as well as our last name. Sometimes even easy names get messed up. One of my family members is named Cian and he gets all kinds of crap lol.
  • I am so struggling with names. Cora and Fiona are both out, I've moved on from those. My current favorite that has been sticking around for like 2 weeks now is Riley. SO still likes the spelling Rylee to make it more feminine but I haven't budged on that yet. I also really now like Eloise and Lina. Naming humans is hard.

  • @calimom2524 you mean we’re not getting our Cora Fiona Seven? *silent sobs*

Eloise is one of my favorite girl names, but it doesn’t go with our last name well. I also love Riley!

  • @calimom2524 can we still call her Seven until you decide? I like the spelling Riley and Eloise and Lina are both beautiful

@ecwk - I love that name! Are your boy names Irish as well?

We're also back at square 1 for baby names. So we're back to calling her Jellybean. I really like Penelope but DH is kinda meh about it. And he likes Winnie but I feel like that sounds more like it's a nick name. I'm kinda sad because I KNEW what DS's name was at like 14 weeks and I don't have that feeling this time of anything being that perfect name. Boo.

  • I'm not totally surprised, I didn't have names for either kid until the end of the pregnancy. I had it narrowed down to two names for DS2 so we let DS1 decide.

  • @mrsbubbles-2 On the subject of Winnie, one of my neighbors has a daughter named Winter and she goes by Winnie, both of which I think are really cute!
  • I kind of love the irony of naming a summer baby ‘Winter’. It’s also why I’m decorating our nursery with an Arctic Ocean theme lol

  • @kburg15 - Winter is cute! I like it better than what came out of my minimal google search. Gwendolyn also came up as an option for Winnie as a nick name which I thought was a stretch but it worked.
@hardlyhannah - LOVE the arctic ocean theme! How cool! (pun totally intended lol!)

  • @hardlyhannah I like to put a snowman in my yard every year, even though I live in AZ.
  • @ecwk do you watch Graham Norton? DH and I just watched the one that had her on it and they were speaking about how to say her name right. Lol. I think it’s beautiful though.
  • @mrsbubbles-2 Winifred? Wilhelmina?

  • @LilyGracesMommy I don't think Scarlett and Rose as siblings is a weird combo. I think it's quite nice and I like both options. You don't hear Ivy or Scarlett all that often.

@ecwk I loooove Saoirse! It's such a lovely name. I wish I had more Irish in me so I could use it  :p

I forget who had Mae on their list, but it's such a great name! DD's mn is Ada Mae after both our grandmothers. I almost wish I saved it as a fn in case we have another girl.

    Hello from Detroit!

  • Ok, I wasn't going to ask because I can guess the answer, but here goes:

If we have a girl, she'll be named Mary Jean. I'd love to give her my middle name, which is also my mother's middle name, but then she'd be Mary Jean Marie.

Is it too weird to use Mary and Marie together? To me they are different names, but they are really just variants of each other.

@derbysquirrel I think it’s odd, but since it’s a middle name it wouldn’t stop me. Middle names are so rarely used all together. So, it would be worth it to me to keep the name in the family.

  • Could she just be Jean Marie or is Mary Jean meant to be said together as a full first name?
  • Mary Jean is the first name. Mary and Jean were my grandmothers, and the first name has been decided for over 20 years. It will be William after my father if a boy. Middle names are the only decision we have to make.

  • I like Jean Marie as a combined first name, if that’s what you’re going for. It has a nice ring.

    What does your DH think?

I think Mary and Marie together are odd but like mentioned above, middle names don’t get used very often.

  • @derbysquirrel - It doesn't bother me at all. Especially since it's a family name I love that it has such special meaning

  • @derbysquirrel If Mary Jean is the first name and Marie is the middle name (not Jean + Marie as two middle names), I actually really like it and don't think the similarity matters.  To me, Mary Jean and Mary are not the same name at all.

  • @derbysquirrel I think it’s fine too. Love the meaning behind it.
  • @derbysquirrel I really like Mary Jean Marie

It's a little strange to me but I think it works and especially because it's middle name I would definitely say go for it!

  • What do you all think about Felix for a boy - too weird? We won't know boy/girl until the end of March, but I'm trying to build my list up so we at least have a starting place.
  • I love Felix. One of my good friends named her son Felix and he is adorable so I associate it with adroableness haha

@juliebird6 I think Felix is adorable!
