Re: Weekly Randoms 3/12

  • @legallykate I can understand that. I've thought something similar when trying to pick out a hospital outfit. Thankfully as far as other clothes we can use ds hand me downs. I am curious though what type of clothes people are getting their late August babies? Ds was 1 month old before we brought him home and that was just briefly so he really didn't wear clothes until over 2 months old so I strangely feel worried as a stm about how to dress a brand new baby especially during the transitional weather of September

  • @meeks2020 Yeah that's confusing too, it will be SO HOT HERE in August and really until October or so. My girlfriends in other places all recommended the Carter's long sleeve zip-down footie things, but I really think I'll need like sleeveless onesies for her, even though we'll obviously mostly be inside with AC. Is there any easy way to "layer" babies?

  • @legallykate I totally get where you're coming from. I'm holding off on buying things because I know my family is going to get me a lot for my shower. But for some reason I'm reluctant to really even start a registry. Every time I read the product recommendation threads I just get overwhelmed and decide to put it off until later. I'm also being that way with maternity clothes. I love clothes shopping, and most of my regular clothes don't fit any more, but I'm just not interested in buying maternity clothes. It's so weird.
  • A friend of mine is also pregnant with her third, a few weeks ahead of me. Our children are all close in age. Over the weekend she posted a picture of herself at a fancy birthday party or something, in a form fitting dress and like 5 inch heels. Guys, she looked amazing. Like she hadn’t gained a single pound. I know it’s silly, but it made me feel so bad about myself. I know in reality bodies change during pregnancy and it is what it is, but comparing myself to her did a number on my self esteem.
    End pity party.
  • @legallykate I am freaking out about how to dress a summer baby too. Winter baby was easy. Shirt Pants Socks Sweater Blanket - bam. warm enough. But summer babies? Clueless.

  • DS1 is a summer baby born in July in Texas. He wore mostly short sleeve onesies with pants and then long sleeved sleepers. We always had the AC on inside so his temperature stayed mostly like ours.

  • @legallykate I was literally just thinking about this same thing. DD was born in January so that was simple.  I was thinking rompers, onesie/shorts/pants combos, but then I also worry about baby being too cold in air conditioning.  Honestly, I feel like I'm going to have to wait until the week I'm due to see what it's doing in Michigan at the time because it can change wildly here.  I assume hot and humid so we'll have the air on, but who knows.
  • Yeah, I live on the face of the sun.  We never let our house get warmer than 80 in the summer and it's 80 outside already.  So..... Short sleeved onesies and pants during the day and depending on what you're swaddling in at night, sometimes I would just put DS in a onesie and then his Ollie Swaddle.  Have I mentioned the Ollie Swaddle?  I took a sleep class about 10w last time and she recommended that thing to me.  It literally changed my life that night.  Now I buy Ollie swaddles for every pregnant friend.
  • @legallykate I've been feeling the same thing, honestly. And I think, if I remember right, we're in the same city - which means ridiculous heat until October - sometimes November! I plan on lots of onesies and pants, probably if  necessary.. it's just too hot here to put them in long-sleeved stuff, I think.

@LC12261012 You're right - every body is different and comparing ourselves to others just drives us crazy most of the time. Big hugs, lady - so sorry it made you feel down.

@livinthesunnylife I checked out that swaddle and it looks amazing... I may try one!

  • I've been looking for a special take home outfit for my little guy and all I've been seeing are sailor suits. I don't want him to look like Danny DeVito as The Penguin, so I'm going to have to keep looking.

  • I'm glad others are already somewhat agonizing over clothing. There's a lot of really cute stuff, but I just can't justify buying anything right now. I think for me is that I'm still kind of stuck in PGAL brain mode, I don't want to jinx things by buying a bunch of stuff so soon. I'm already nervous about the crib and carseat I bought, which are staying hidden in the spare bedroom so I don't see or think about them much.

As for the coming home outfit, I'm not one for super special frilly, but as a FTM I'm also clueless. It'll be late August for me, which for here is generally hot and humid, so I was just thinking a cute short sleeve onesie, maybe some lightweight pants that go over it if we have one of those unseasonable cool spells, that I'll buy in newborn and 0-3mo sizes, to make sure one of them fits. And perhaps a light receiving blanket over it for the hour long drive home in an air conditioned vehicle.
  • @jsnakehole I've been looking at some rompers on Aliexpress. Cheap + there's some cute ones.  I'm thinking if I need baby to be warmer I can add a onesie under the romper  (I'm looking at sleeveless ones) link to a couple of example rompers in the spoiler. Idk how to really dress a newborn in September but I thought these would be flexible for a start?

  • Scrolling through the names thread...about 80-90% of the posts are for girls' names. I think that is interesting...
    Me: 38; DH: 41
    DS: Born 5-17-16

  • @vinerie imo girls names have so many different options, boy names don't have as much variety :/

  • @livinthesunnylife  Minus the NICU experience, I felt the same way.  Our "going home" outfit was a simple short sleeve monkey romper. Nothing fancy because I kind of didn't see the point.  I wasn't exactly looking glamorous going home either LOL

Just popping in to say hi. I had a super busy weekend and so far hasn’t been any more calm. Plus, I’m exhausted because my kids did not adjustt well to the time change.

Keeping up with you guys, but too tired to contribute today.  :#

  • I made a big deal out of DS1's going home outfit; this adorable little polo with plaid shorts and matching shoes. Sheesh, that was ridiculous in hindsight. DS2 got a sleeper to go home in.

  • @livinthesunnylife after a month in the nicu I was excited for a taking him home outfit even tho we were stuck in the truck for our 2 hr drive home, I was even more excited tho for the first outfit he was able to wear. Those photos and memories mean more to me than the coming home outfit bc he was 10 days old

@JanetSnakehole I put DS in a ridiculously cute sleeper that was also the very first baby gift we received (from my parents), so I think it can both be meaningful and practical!

  • @meeks2020 I never heard of aliexpress so I checked it out! They have some really cute stuff for reasonable.
If this LO is a boy he has to have this outfit -

  • @Brezzy1928 the only advice I have for them is to read reviews! They have some really cute things for really cheap as most are from China. I'm frugal and don't want to spend much on newborn clothes especially since we have so many already. I just want to get him a couple of special outfits

  • @legallykate I understand how you feel. Although I have bought baby items it is only because I have forced myself. I feel like it I buy things the more real it is. I hate seeing trigger post because that makes me want to crawl back into my shell and not purchase anything. I can’t let that affect me though.

As far as buying clothes my daughter was really petite, so she didn’t fit anything that I purchased for her. I had to go shopping once she was here. I will probably do the same with this baby. Once he is here go buy a bulk of what I need. For now I just have a few items, so he doesn’t have to go around like he lives at a nudist camp.
  • We should probably explain ^^ a little better for the FTMs.  Baby clothes brands vary a ton on how they fit.  So if you have a round short baby one brand might fit better than a tall skinny baby.  It's really annoying that a 6m size in different brands is completely different.
Yes for example, Carters runs small and Old Navy runs big. So your child size will depend on how well the clothes fit. Carters worked well for my daughter because she was petite. Old navy always looked too big on her so I would have to size down.
  • This guy is coming home in a onesie I ordered off ETSY with suspenders and a tie on it. It also has knit booties and a hat. DS wore it home and it was the only time he wore it. Poor second child. lol. I haven’t bought anything and need to go through DS’s stuff to see what we need.

DS was also a summer baby and he just wore onesies. I didn’t even put on pants a lot of the time, but he was swaddled. It’s hot where we live.

@Firemanswife11 I’m so sorry. The thought of tamiflu makes me gag, it made me so sick the second time I took it. I really hope you avoid the flu.
  • I've always heard that for newborn babies, you dress them one layer more than you're comfortable in. So if you're comfy in shorts and a tee, then long sleeves and pants, or a short sleeve onesie and pants with a muslin swaddle. It'll be probably over 100 degrees here for the first 3 months of this kid's life (it doesn't usually cool down until after Thanksgiving here) but we live in the AC for my own sanity, so a good mix of layers and options is good.

I was so excited for the coming home outfit and had it all planned out, down to the socks. Well, DS came 9.5 weeks early, and was just over 5lbs when he came home after 6.5 weeks in the NICU. I had to completely change the outfit to a preemie size at the last minute. But I now have the onesie in a shadow box in his room with the hospital bracelets, his teeny blood pressure cuff, a preemie diaper, etc.

Yes on the annoying sizes! Baby Gap runs big. H&M runs super long, good for long skinny kids.

  • I run cold. Very cold. I'll take off my coat when it hits above 80 degrees, cold. I wear ski pants outside from October to March, cold. My fetus is presumably getting used to the high temperatures I keep my own body at, so I wonder if the kid will also run cold. If I have to keep the baby dressed one layer warmer than I'm comfortable, we may have a ridiculous situation on our hands, like a baby in a snowsuit inside a grocery store in September because it's air conditioned.

  • C'mon blood sugar, work with me! Why you 62 when I ate a nice lunch plate of walnuts, baby carrots with homemade dip, pickled beets, and cherries 2 hours ago and was stuffed. This insulin shit is going to make me fat if it means I literally have to eat tons of carbs just to balance it out. >:(
  • DS was also an August baby, I kept him in mostly short sleeved onesies at home and he had a few outfits. I kept it pretty simple with sleepwear until we figured out what worked, he wasn't a fan of the velcro swaddles, I think they were too warm, but the lightweight swaddles with a onesie was perfect for him. A lot of the time for the first few days at home honestly, he was just in a diaper because our AC decided to crap out lol! But we got a bunch of lightweight cotton sleepers and rompers for this baby.

I think I'll be waiting until this baby arrives to buy more than just the basics, Mother Nature has been almost as moody as I am    :D

  • DS came home in the cutest outfit - it was all neutral colors and a little bear sweater with little bear ears, and handmade knit hat, booties and mittens. I love it. Obviously baby #2 will need a different outfit, so I will get something also neutral but for warmer weather. I like making the departure to home special, as silly as it may be.

So many new cars in this BMB! We are in the market too, need a third row so very interesting to see what y’all are getting!

Another vote for not caring about their goinghome outfit. I agonised over it with DS, and being team green it was hard to find something adorable and neutral. He ended up coming home in blue footie pjs which were nice and comfortable. Sometimes I want to be like my Pinterest Queen mom friends but then I realise I don’t have the time to make the effort
