@ladythrice it's usually 24-28 weeks. My Dr told me usually they wait until 28. I'm doing mine at 24 because I already failed once before, so probably those at a higher risk do it closer to 24.
@ngolimento I would rather have jelly beans then that drink.
I could totally eat that many jelly beans way faster than drinking the drink

I have a friend who's super health-conscious and complained about the artificial flavors/colors etc, so her doctor let her eat nutella crepes and then do the test.
I don't remember much about the test last time. While it didn't taste amazing, it wasn't terrible, and I felt fine afterward. I guess my high carb/sugar diet is beating my body into being glucose-tolerant, hah.

WHAAAAT?! I'd eat all the nutella crepes before my glucose test....

@mountainsmama my body doesn’t bat an eye when I drink that sugary junk either. All the M&Ms and ice cream i’ve been eating are not for naught - my pancreas has been in training!

I go in next week (23 weeks) for mine. My first pregnancy I failed the 1-hour but passed the 3-hour. My OB wants me to go straight for the 2-hour test this time. I am not looking forward to the fasting and the waiting.
Fingers crossed for negative results for all of you ladies!
Sorry, I'm not going to tag everyone but I'm amazed at how different doctors do things for the same damn test. I already have my drink just waiting for me to drink an hour before my appointment. (It will be my 26 week appointment- I started off funky so idk how they plan to get me back on track). They don't even draw blood, it's just a simple finger prick to check sugar levels. I also get 10 minutes to drink my flat orange drink. I failed it with my last pregnancy and had to go for the 3 hour test at the lab. Hopefully I don't have to repeat that because the sugar intake of that drink is higher and it made me feel really sick.
Add me into the lucky group who just gets sent home with the Kool Aid ahead of time. I will be 24 weeks at my next appt, so they will hand it over and schedule me for the test afterwards. If I remember correctly, I was a tad over 28 weeks last time.
@sjn00 I’m a little surprised your doc would check your A1C in place of the GTT. The A1C result is a percentage that tells the doctor what your average blood sugar has been over the past three months. Gestational diabetes doesn’t usually spring up until around 24ish weeks. So if you develop it, the A1C isn’t telling them that. There’s another lab (I can’t for the life of me remember the name right now) that tells an average for I believe the last one month which may be a little more effective. Or the could simply have you monitor your blood sugar for a week or so when you first wake up in the morning and after meals.

Agreed. When I asked about alternatives because due to a stomach surgery that causes me to have hypoglycemia and dumping syndrome, I’ve decided to just test my blood sugar for a week at 26 weeks. I follow the GD diet anyway just because that’s how I’ve done it since being forced to last pregnancy. My doctor is mainly concerned with my fasting numbers which have all been good at the 16 week check when she had me check for a week.
@tooraloorah Right. Fasting numbers and post meal BGs would be much more accurate tools to aid in diagnosis. @sjn00 If I were you, I would question your doc. If GD is new onset, A1C could easily miss it and you don’t want it to go undiagnosed.

It’s wasnt @sjn00 but me that will do the AC1. I guess because I’m considered low risk (had no GD last pregnancy 17 months ago, basically eat low carb diet, no risks factors like overweight, birthed a 5lbs10 baby and I’m followed closely by my MFM they decided it was a viable option. I’ll ask for peace of mind but I trust them with how much careful they are with everything

@tooraloorah@Mattel This wasnt me, I have never taken the A1C in replace of the GTT nor did I say so? I have to take the glucose test, but they had me take the 2 hour one only last time. Idk what im doing this time, but im going to request the 1 hour. I wish I could just do the A1C though lol. I have Reactive Hypoglycemia so the most that comes out of this test for me is a false positive. I have monitored my blood sugars for the last year and my numbers when I have an issue goes into the 40's-50's but have never been higher then 76 no matter what time of day I take it with what I eat. Only time its been high is with the 2 hour test. So if I fail the 1 hour, nothing in my diet is going to change, and I already see a nutritionist for monitoring, but why go through the torture of a 2 hour when i can find out the same info with the 1 hour? Idk, I see my OB next monday and we'll talk about it then.
@Mattel my MFM and my midwives work together. There’s always one midwife there during the MFM appointment so he knows the plan. I don’t know if there’s a link but I have Grave’s disease (hyperthyroidism) so I have a really fast metabolism from it. Like I said, they are the spécialist so I trust their judgment!
Blah blah blah blah... all I've learned from this thread is that I need to pretend I'm uber health conscious and tell my doc that my body is a temple and I need to replace the full of chemicals koolaid with nutella crepes for my GD test.
....I just can't get over this...

@ladythrice I know right?! I love that she was like "oh I don't consume artificial coloring ..." but somehow nutella is totally fine? She did make sure to clarify that they were from an "organic, gluten free bakery."

My apologies, as I just quoted @Mattel. I have the same thing. I’m opting to take my levels for a week because I, too, get false positives. If you could just check and avoid having to take the GTT in the first place, that’s what my MFM said was ideal for a second pregnancy. It’s dangerous for us to take GTTs with that type of hyopglycemia.
@ftm_ohio Most people do not have that kind of issue with the test! I was told it's really rare to pass out like that. I'm not saying the test is pleasant, but for most people it's nothing to worry about.
@tooraloorah Good to know! I am definitely going to bring it up. I refuse to do something im not confortable with. So im hoping she will work with me on it!

It all depends on the person, I personally got really dizzy, light headed, and crazy shaky and pale and was craving protein like crazy. They told me before the test not to throw it up or I would have to start completely over. So it can make people nauseaous and sick.
Hoping I have the experience of these ladies who say they have no problems because they have trained for it lol. I admittedly eat too many sweets.. We shall see, but I definitely appreciate this whole thread!
I am kind of a camel and drinking that much in 5 minutes is no problem, plus it kind of tasted like HiC from Mc Ds, so I had no issues -- Just a little peace of mind for some that are first timers and worried, it really isn't that bad for everybody.
This thread actually has me a little worried about driving while drinking it/directly after! Considering just showing up super early and drinking it in the parking lot in case I have a weird reaction to it. Driving through Boston feeling light-headed and dizzy is no bueno.
Welp I talked to my OB today and she consulted with another OB, they are having me do the A1C instead of the GTT as well. I told her I was okay with taking the 1 hour and she said it was too risky. She said we will see what the A1C says and go from there. I may or may not test for 1 week to see what my numbers say depending on how the A1C comes out.
I have been eating a TON of sweets the last few months balanced out with protein, and have had 3 low blood sugar drops since being pregnant, so if somethings going to show, it definitely will.
I go in for my one hour the fifth of January. I’m set up to visit the pediatric side of the office during the hour wait and have my regular doctor’s visit. So, thankfully, I won’t just be sitting and waiting. Excited to do the tour. May bring up birthing plan questions at this time as well. I’m hopeful I will pass but am prepared for a fail as well. With everything else that has happened during the pregnancy, I think I’m just about prepared for anything.
My birth center has started doing their own labs! This means I got to schedule it so I go in and drink it then have my appointment and only a little wait after that. Plus their waiting room is way comfier than Quest labs
Well had my 3 hour today. Was starving the whole time. I'm really glad I brought my water this time I think that helped in not making me feel completely awful. I have hope of passing but I'm being realistic and knowing that I might not. Not wanting to be a Debby downer I just think my body just flips out when it's pregnant and forgets to process sugar.
I didn’t feel any effects, my 1 hour value was 0.2 above the cutoff and the 2 hour was normal. Because of that 0.2 I have to be referred to the diabetes clinic and meet with a dietician and discuss food choices and check my sugars....i was like it’s 0.2!! Come on! That’s basically normal lol

The orange drink I had wasn't the worst. It wasn't that great either, not something I'd seek out in the store I also didn't get sick after, but maybe the holiday cookie train last week was somehow preparing me for it. I did find out today that I passed. FX for everyone else!
My test is scheduled at the end of this month. I'll be 2 days shy of 26 weeks. Looking forward to getting it over with. Last time 5 years ago the drink was horrible tasting. I'm hoping they've come a long ways since then and made it better. My weight is creeping up everyday so I'm a little concerned because of that.
