Whenever I sit in the oversized chair the dog likes to jump up with me. If I have the baby or I'm pumping I'm not ok with it. Just now I'm pumping and he jumped up on the top and tried to make his way to the left side where I'm hooked up to the pump. He laid down on tubing, I tried to get him off the chair and he got tangled and it all fell and I spiked milk. Not cool dog not cool
Does anyone else supplement with formula? If so, I'm just curious what that looks like for you.
We had to start adding in formula early because she wasn't gaining enough weight from breastmilk alone even though weighted feeds showed she was getting enough. So, now what that looks like for us is: nurse in the morning usually between 5:30 and 6. Then 14oz of formula and 4oz of BM get split between 3 bottles for 6oz each. She gets two of those while I'm at work usually around 9:00 and 1:00. She nurses around 5pm and then I give her a short nursing session and she gets the last 6oz bottle between 8 and 8:30. I pump before I go to bed. Anything I pump at work and at night I put into a rotating freezer stash. I have over 200oz frozen bc we had to replace some BM with formula. On the weekends I nurse on demand and add in a 2-3oz formula bottle after if she acts like she needs more - maybe once or twice a day. She still gets a 6oz formula bottle at night.
Today , L just did not want to eat almost all day long. She threw a tantrum every time i tried to feed her. We were out in the city for brunch and walked around , i think she was too distracted. also she kept nursing all night long, maybe that s why she didnot need much.
We've been supplementing since 2 weeks since my supply never increased past 2-3 oz a session. I've been starting to wean a bit so lately it's been nursing twice during the day (pumping at work on weekdays), once in the evening, and once MOTN. She gets 3-4 oz formula after every nursing and I send her to daycare with one bottle of whatever I pumped the day before (about 5 oz) and three formula bottles (two 4.5 oz, one 2.5 oz). She has been drinking it all there. On weekends there is usually an extra nursing session in there and one or two 4-6 oz formula bottles w/out nursing.
@lajoliedreamer that's how I feel my supply is now. Our weighted feeds showed she was getting 2.5 oz total from both breasts, but that was when she was like 4 weeks old. I'm not sure my supply increased a lot since then. I get between 3-4 oz at my 1030am pumping session and only 2 at my 2pm pumping. I'm lucky to get 2oz at my 11pm pumping. However, she never acts hungry on the weekends when I mostly breastfeed her. I'm curious to talk to our pedi and decide what our new plan should be for the summer when I'm not working. I'd love to breastfeed her more, but I don't want to starve her. But how do I know if she needs more if she acts content after every time I feed her? She still has wet diapers, but not nearly as much as when she gets her formula bottles. Ughhh so frustrating.
Your LO's are drinking formula without needing to mix it withBreastmilk? My first hated the taste of formula so I had to mix it with Breastmilk in order for her to accept it. I just assumed it would be the same this time. It never occurred to me to try giving formula all by itself. I figured the taste was so different he would automatically reject it. Hmmmmmm...
@rspalding001 ODD went from BM to formula with no problem. She drank whatever kind and type of formula we gave her. This LO, made a face the first formula bottle we gave her and drank it slow but has done perfectly fine ever since. I know some who if their LO wouldn't take formula alone, they would mix the two and slowly make the BM less and less until it was just formula.
@rspalding001 We are doing both formula and breast milk at the same time now. We switch back and forth with no problem and I just use the ready to serve Similac.
I'm getting so frustrated with him pulling off and screaming. Before it was annoying bc it was off on off on, now it's eat for a while pull off and scream. When he does it on each side I give up but I'm not sure he's getting enough. Is he just loudly telling me "I'm done eating mom" or what

I'm having a similar issue this weekend unless it's MOTN or the one long feed I force upon him that makes him fall asleep. I'm hoping it's all the fall out to being sick/teething though.
Nipple shield update: we haven't used one since the day I posted my other update. I don't remember when that was (um, time.. where do you go?) but yay! What a win!

this was exactly us this weekend. today i was super annoyed , first she starts to suck and when the milk comes in , she pulls herself and we are both wet . she acts as if i am torturing her when i try to nurse. she was super hungry at the end of the day.
I keep complaining here, sorry but L almost stopped eating during the day. WTH ! She starts eating well at around 5.30pm then until 8am. I do not know what is wrong with her or something is wrong. She is very active , pooping a lot etc. I do not know what I should do.
@Zoefer How many times in a 24 hour period would you say she is eating? Could be a nursing strike, or reverse cycling? If she is nursing/getting a bottle 6-8 times in 24 hours, having enough wet/dirty diapers, and seems content, I wouldn't worry too much unless this continues more than a few days. at this age our babies are so distractible and don't want to miss anything, even to eat! Maybe try nursing during the day somewhere dim and quiet with few distractions? Are you on facebook? Le Leche Leauge has a great support group page you can post questions to and get advice from LLL leaders and other breastfeeding parents.

Thanks @Megz1902, she nurses at night while I am at home maybe 5-6 times. But some of them short while some of them are 30-45 minutes. I just think she must be hungry during the day. It is a good idea to post on LLL ! Thanks !

Sounds like she is reverse cycling then, eating more at night with you than she does during the day.
ETA: I'm not an expert though, so thats just my 2 cents from all the reading I have done getting through our BF-ing struggles.

Note to self - pumping before bed is depressing. LO goes to bed and last feed is 7. Ive been trying to pump the last two nights around 9 before I go to bed and I've gotten less than an ounce combined. It does not make me feel good. I know I can't judge how much he's getting from how much I'm pumping, but really? I thought there'd be something!
Update, I ended up with a almost an ounce and a half with more patience and pumping forever! I'm happy although still concerned and unsure. The mom doubt is so strong sometimes.
@desoky01 Don't stress that! Remember we have the most milk in the morning. I don't think it's not normal to just get a little bit at night. Definitely try the mothers milk tea if you haven't already. I think it has helped me.

Can i ask why you're pumping then? At this point, I would only pump when LO takes a bottle - especially if your moods begin to be dictated by the pump output (I am guilty of this). But also Mother's Milk tea is pretty helpful foe me as well.
@SandNStarsNJ I am just trying to get a little bit more here and there for another bottle while I'm gone at work. He sometimes takes two bottles while I'm gone, but I've only been pumping enough for one bottle at work. I'm hoping pumping after he's gone to bed might help boost supply a little, and I will likely also pump after his morning feeds to get enough. He's always eating once I get home and I feel like my supply drops so much in the evenings that pumping in the afternoon just isnt feasible until he's asleep.

I pump around that time too and it is because he will often (well ok until this rolling over nonsense started) not wake up until morning so if I didn't pump before I go to bed I'd be going close to 12 hours between sessions because I'm not waking up in the middle of the night to pump.

You're body will adjust though... you don't need to pump then if you don't need to be producing more milk. Your body should start regulating itself after a few days of going 12 hours, if you're looking to cut yourself a break.

Good to know. I actually don't mind pumping before I go to bed so I'll keep it up since I need it for bottles until I'm ready to dip into the freezer stash
Huge part of my boob is rock hard and super sore. I'd say about 3 inches by 1 inch. Blocked duct or something more serious? What can I do?! It's 1 am and Ive just finished basically force feeding the babe and now I have a hot compress on and trying to hand express. Afraid to sleep becaue in nervous what it will be like come tomorrow. Hallppp!
@kristah2 Sounds like a clogged duct, I had one a month or so ago. Hot compress is a great thing to do. Also massage your boob in the shower tomorrow (as well as before/during feeding), working down from almost the shoulder, which is where the ducts start. Another thing I read (and did) is to feed LO from above, letting gravity help clear the duct. Mine took about three days to go away. You'll be fine!
Thanks for the hope and the tips @lajoliedreamer. It hurts so bad!!! I'm also larger chested so the weight of my boobs hurt it but being pushed up in a bra hurts it. No winning.
@SandNStarsNJ that sounds painful! I would have no advice besides lanolin. Good luck with that!
Oghh i am sorry @SandNStarsNJ ! My LO started to teeth on my nipple too, especially if she s not too hungry and wants to play. Hope you feel better soon.
Oh no! So sorry you're dealing with that @SandNStarsNJ - have you contacted you dr/midwife/lactation consultant? If not, I would reach out and see if they have any recommendations.
Anyone else's baby starting to get really distracted while nursing? What are you doing to help prevent this? I don't want to have to lock myself away to feed him and he gets all hot and sweaty under a cover. Any other suggestions or am I doomed to either sweat or solitude?
ETA: the nursing covers really only work sometimes because he can still hear and wants to know what's going on around us.

I have an abrasion from LO teething on my nipple. It's killing me to nurse. Anyone have a home remedy? I'm currently doing salt water and lanolin.
