All Things Breastfeeding

Re: All Things Breastfeeding

  • I am looking for a recommendation. I don't want to have to travel with my double electric pump. Wondering if anyone has any suggestions so a really cheap manual. It would only be used a handful of times while on vacation.
  • Loading the player...
  • @ladybug2821 do you leave the pump running after you are done? I detach the tubes from the flanges and leave the pump on as I clean up and get the pumped milk in the fridge. The last thing I do is turn off the pump. That way the air drys out the tubing for me.
  • @Ladybug2821 which part are they replacing ? I was having the same issue , then i left the pump on while the tubing were still attached as @rspalding001 . It helped. I do not get much condensation anymore.
  • @kristah2 I am using the madela manual pump, but I cannot say that it is great. I cannot figure out the problem but sometimes it cannot get enough suction. But it usually works okay for a quick solution.
  • They are replacing the tubing.  I allow the pump to run with tubes attached for awhile when I'm finished.  I also hang the tubes over a chair.  The customer rep said living in a humid area can cause the condensation not to dry out.  I'm also having a problem with one of the connectors.  I think there is something wrong with the threading (the grooves to screw it on) because it is leaking.

@ZoeFer I have that one as well.  Someone recommended changing out the O-ring to get better suction. I just bought them from the local hardware shop for $2. I'm going to try it out tomorrow
  • I am having issues with LO not holding his latch. He sucks a few times, then let's go crying. Im wondering if part of it is that he gets one bottle a day and likes the easier feeding from the bottle. It usually only is a problem on days I work so he's had a bottle. I'm also worried about my supply, I'm not sure if I'm just not making enough since he's sleeping so long during the night? Feeling worried I may have to starting pumping to feed him from bottles or figure out something new. I hate having to work. He often is fine later in the afternoon, but sometimes I worry that it's just because I'm not producing enough. Damn, why is this so hard?

This. I'm having the same issue and I barely ever give M a bottle but I can tell he's trying to wean himself. As much as I complain about breastfeeding I'm not sure I'm ready yet. I told my H last night and he was like "Ok then just give him the formula." Um, ok? I was expecting him to convince me to keep going.
  • Our LO does the same thing sometimes but I know that it s not supply or anything. then half an hour later , she starts to suck as if i left her to starving. it s so hard to understand her
  • I had this problem when I went back to work.  In the beginning, I had to BF with a nipple shield.  I pulled that back out and she was good to go.  I was even able to remove it midway and she was fine.  I only had to do that a couple times and was back to normal.  I think it does have to do with the bottle and that rubber (or whatever it is) feeling of the shield kind of mimics a bottle nipple.  Also, if you are having supply issues, I really think the mother's milk tea works.  I mentioned before I was having a lot of issues about a week ago when I got my period.  I drank one cup of that a day and now that my period is gone, I've actually been able to get more than I did when I was getting the most output.

@Ladybug2821 I'll have to try it even though I hate tea! It helps a little to know others are having the same thing, maybe it's not supply related but more developmental and bottle related. I just want him to be getting enough, that's my biggest concern. It stresses me out when he gets so upset during a feed!

@MrsMaryK2016 H said "maybe you'll just have to pump into bottles for him then." He doesn't get the desire to continue to breastfeed, the attachment I have to it, the guilt about having to stop, the sadness about stopping, the stress and difficulty of pumping, etc.
  • Men don't get BF at all, but then again I didn't either until I was doing it and successfully. It's this love-hate thing all the time.

@desoky01 & @mrsmaryk2016 Maybe your LO is ready for the occasional solid? They might just need more to be satisfied. Offering some after a BF might be worth a try if you're ready. And I also drink mothers milk tea which seems to make a difference.

@jsmai I use the Medela hand pump and get a pretty output. It's $23 on Amazon and comes with two bottles.

    @ZoeFer @SandNStarsNJ

I replaced the #60 o ring on the medela hand pump today and got much much better suction.  Yay!
  • The tubes to my pump never dry out and I can never get all of the condensation out.  I called Medela and they are sending me another set for free.  I'm sure its a one time thing but an fyi in case anyone has a Medela pump and needs a replacement part.
Oh so wish I knew that about a month ago. I searched babies r us, and target, and they don't carry the tubes. My tubes always have condensation. I bought new tubes off of Amazon and the instructions said to leave the pump on with the tubes plugged in to dry them out. I do that often and it does help dry them out. Since I've done that my pump works better too.
  • @desoky01 this supplement was recommended by the LC at the hospital where I delivered and it super boosted my supply. It went down by a lot after my pump broke for a week and I doubled the dosage and drank literally 2 liters of water a day. Now, I'm getting more than I did before.

  • @desoky01 Yes! Especially the guilt part. I really don't like breastfeeding that much but I still feel guilty about stopping.

@SandNStarsNJ M is definitely ready for solids but I was going wait until after our trip to start. But if he keeps this up then I'm going to have to try it.
  • I have the same latching problem. It seems to happen mostly toward the end of emptying one side and also when he's tired. I've busted out a bottle a few times to make sure he gets enough if it's before bed just to be safe.

@SandNStarsNJ I completely agree that it is a love-hate thing. Do you drink the tea every day?  I did it for a couple days and then once I started seeing my supply coming back I stopped. I don't want to create an oversupply but I also want to keep it steady. My plan is to drink it right before and during my period to keep up my supply.

I have a cup in lieu of coffee daily.

  • @jsmai is it that clear rubber thing that goes around the pumping (held) part? did you replace it with a regular o-ring?
i hate pumping, i need to pump during breakfast, during lunch, coffee break. these were the little breaks i could enjoy a working day and they are all gone. more and more, i feel like i do not do anything to enjoy. i know that is probably not true but i am too overwhelmed lately.

I feel the same way... and i pump during some weird activities.

  • @ZoeFer I feel the same way. I don't even work full time and I've never had a regular break during this job but a pumping break just isn't the same. I'm sorry it's rough for you right now! You're not alone!
  • Confession: I enjoy pumping. I work in a small, fast paced office so the 3 times per day that I pump are the only times that are mine (I even eat lunch at my desk). I bring a snack, some water and indulge in some online gossip websites. I'm going to be so sad when I stop pumping.
  • Thanks ladies ! I am looking forward to the weekend, it will help.
  • @zoefer They require you to pump during breaks you would normally take if not pumping?  I'm not exactly sure of the laws but I pump 3 times a day and I still take my hour lunch also.  Maybe something you could look into so you can at least get some kind of break to yourself.

same here. Aside from my room sometimes being swiped, once I'm actually pumping I don't mind at all. It is a nice break.
  • @Ladybug2821 I work in a laboratory and do not work by hour, it is a very flexible setting. I can take my lunch hour if I want to. But then I cannot finish my work on time and need to stay longer hours. So I usually pump while eating lunch, or writing my emails or both.

This is me, only I'm a teacher so the few breaks I get are 40 minute shots of - pee, pump, prep and maybe have lunch. It's a nonstop cycle until I lay down at night.

  • I've been stressed out since last night (emergency trips to the vet and the pediatrician will do that to you) and it is messing with my supply. I normally get between 6 and 8 ozs in the morning; this morning, I got 3. FML.

So sorry about the emergency trips @RhodaMorgenstern, i read in the other thread that you are all doing well. you know why you have the low supply so it is temporary, dont need to worry for this. Do you need milk for the weekend? i usually do not pump much or worry about how much i pump, kinda give me a holiday.
Also, i took this afternoon off. Came home to find L refusing the bottle again and she nursed like crazy all afternoon. I cannot believe that she s still not accepting the bottle after more than two months. Anyway , it felt so good to spend this gloomy afternoon nursing, cuddling and napping
  • Is anyone's LO eating significantly less lately? He has eaten every 2 hours since birth and today he only nursed twice when the sun was up. It just feels off.

  • that sounds a but too little @SandNStarsNJ but i dont know if it is normal. how is he doing otherwise? my LO is super inconsistent about eating so i learned not to worry much as long as she is happy , pees and poops normally.

Mine is eating more. Though I blame day care bc sometimes they feed him every 1.5-2 hours so then he wants that at home. He used to be at 3 hours. Now im lucky to get that

Yes S has been eating less recently. She was doing 20 oz while I was at work for like a week (growth spurt?). Now she's been only eating 10 oz while I'm at work but she's still been peeing  and pooping like crazy. I heard teething and going through a leap can cause them to eat less.
  • Thanks @ZoeFer, I pump on Friday's for Monday's daycare bottles. I'm feeling much better today. A is sleeping well, eating well and I had a glass of wine after she fell asleep so I fell asleep at 9:30. I've accepted that I'm just going to need to dip into my freezer stash for Monday. Is what it is.
  • @SandNStarsNJ have you introduced solid foods yet? A's been drinking less since we started solid food. She nursed for 5 minutes this morning, had a banana/avocado mash and promptly dove for my boobs but nursed for a minute before she fell asleep.
  • S was eating less for a few weeks at the 5 month mark. Now she's back to eating 20-25oz per day. I think she was eating 15oz at the least point. It was also when she waking every hour. I tried everything to get her to eat more, she just wouldn't.

When do do they stop eating at night? Mine eats 10 oz once at 1am and then at 5am. Last night she woke every hour again and had 3 bottles of 5 oz each time. I've tried dream feeding to wean her, but it hasn't worked. I've also tried to feed her more during the day, but she won't take it.

    *snip*
This is mine right now. He's approaching 5 months so maybe it is just a combination of growth spurt, teething, etc. he's been a little sick too and is currently on a nebulizer twice a day so who knows.
