Re: All Things Breastfeeding

  • @tigerfish227 yes! My little guy is getting distracted but luckily only if he hears someone he doesn't see all the time or you know, if my husband gets up in his face and starts kissing him. But I try to just redirect him. If he really seems hell bent on focusing elsewhere I stop for like 15 minutes and try again once the novelty of whatever he was distracted by wears off.

  • @tigerfish227 yep and it is annoying. He just pulls off and on and I've gotten to wear I just stop. But then sometimes he screams BC I've stopped. It's lovely. If he is screaming I just make a bottle bc it's not worth the fight
  • It's the worst when my husband is next to me. He whips off the boob ans tilts his head so far back so he can see him and just gives the biggest smile. It's adorable but so annoying.
I try to sit in the corner of the couch etc and feed from the side where there's really nothing to see if he comes off.

Have you tried a teething necklace to keep the distracted at chest level? It will work for S if I am talking to her and trying to engage her with the necklace while she nurses. Sometimes it'll decrease the number of times she pops off
  • @SandNStarsNJ a friend of mine is an LC so I asked last night what she recommends for teething on nipples. She said lanolin and breast pads because the rubbing against your bra can make it worst. And it sucks but she suggested a nipple shield, at least until your wounds heal.
  • Thanks @rhodamorgenstern! I really appreciate that. I've been doing a saline soak right after feeding, then coating it in BM once it dries, and then topping it off with Lanolin. I also have been going bra-less at home to get air in and it's already showing improvement.

Which brings me to the distraction topic here... that's how I got the abrasion in the first place! He's starting to cut teeth and whipped his head backwards to see something mid-feed and there it was. It doesn't seem to matter where I feed him because even if it's silent, he starts looking around like he's missing something. So I take him off, pat his back, let him look around and latch after he's gotten his fill. I also hold his very firmly for the first few minutes to deter the looking.

The torn skin is now bleeding. This SUCKS.
A nipple shield might help to allow some time to heal while still nursing. Hope you feel better soon.
  • LO is very easily distracted here too. Although a cover seems to make it even worse!
  • I've never felt comfortable BF in public so normally I just bring a bottle. But in the case that I don't have one, I just do it in the car. S is crazy distractable right now so I couldn't imagine doing it in public.
  • So daycare called to tell me they are out of BM for day at 1:30pm. That's 20oz between the hours of 7:30 and 1:30. He nursed three times last night and consistently nurses when I get home. He never demonstrates being unsatisfied after eating at home, but they insist he is still hungry. Am I nuts to think he should not be going through 20 oz in 6 hours?

that is pretty crazy, even in a growth spurt. I thought your LO had slowed down some at day care? Mine eats 20 oz over about a 10 hour period. Sometimes they feed him 1.5 hours after the last bottle and I always figure he must be throwing an epic fit and they don't know what else to do - just like I would at home. That being said we've never run out or had his last bottle that early

What are they going to feed him the rest of the day?
  • @SandNStarsNJ Since he normally eats 20 oz, it could be a growth spurt to take in more. My LO went from eating 16 oz to 20 oz and I thought that was crazy for her. But now some days she only eats 10 oz. plus some solids.  Is he getting any solids?

He had and suddenly he amped back up, which sucks because my supply has begun to readjust to his previous intake... and I have no idea what else they are going to feed him.

At random he is getting solids, but it constipates him so badly that I can't bare to do it daily just yet.

  • @sandnstarsnj I don't blame you.  Some solids are starting to cause some issues over here too, but instead diarrhea  :s.
  • I left 5ozs of breastmilk in my pump bag overnight! Noooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!
    im so sad.

  • Hi guys! I hope it's ok to post here. I belong to the October BMB and although they are awesome, it seems like there is more action here! I plan to post on both BMBs if that's okay.

My LO will be 7 months on the 10th. I nurse while at home and pump while at work. She's never liked bottles but would usually take 8-14 ounces throughout the day. Now she's hardly taking anything! She took 1 ounce from 6:30-2 today. 1 ounce! Is she reverse cycling? She now nursed 3-4 times in the afternoon/night then 2-3 MOTN times and once when she wakes up in the morning. How do I get her to take more throughout the day so she takes less at night?

I do strictly nurse on the on the weekends and she nurses every 2-3 hours.
  • @fitlady21 welcome!
youcould try bottle feeding during the day when you have her instead of nursing so that she doesn't resist at day care so much? It's a lot of extra work pumping I know. Just an idea.
  • @rspalding001 I've already gone on 2 trips and both times she had straight bottles for 2-3 days and did fine. I just refuse to do that when I'm home.. too lazy! Haha I just wish I could trick her into drinking more during the day and nursing less
  • Hi @fitlady21! Would a faster flow nipple incentivize LO at all?

  • Hey @fitlady21!  I came over here awhile back when our BMB was super dead. These ladies are great!
  • My nipples are so sore for some reason. S doesn't chomp on them. Maybe I'm using the let down button too much on my pump?  What gives?
  • @Ladybug2821 is LO teething? Over here right before his teeth broke through my nipples were super sore! He wasn't chewing on them, but something (maybe extra saliva?) made them hurt pretty bad. Looking back I think it was he was teething.

I live by the letdown but have been getting sore from what I think is LO's gums getting firmer. I'm back to Lanolin and it's really saving me the pain.

It could be possible.  We've been saying she's been teething for months but we weren't really sure.  But come to think of it, maybe that is why she's been having so much diarrhea the past few days.  I heard that could be a symptom also.

Maybe I will have to get some of that.  I've been using the Angel Baby Butter (whatever that stuff is called) and coconut oil but doesn't seem to be working so well.
  • @SandNStarsNJ I do have a size 1 nipple that I tried a few months ago.. I think it's time to try it again! Thanks!
  • @fitlady21 we are going through the same thing with reverse cycling, but my lo isn't into eating much during the day at all, doesn't matter if it's nursing or bottles. For the past week we've tried sleep training and forcing him to do at least one 4 hour stretch overnight, hoping that if we limit night feeds he'll eat more during the day. It's helped maybe just slightly

@erniebernie1 we have the same issue, and it is getting worse. Yesterday she got only 5 ounces all day long! She does not take the bottle even though she is hungry. I try to put her back to sleep without nursing but I am not sure it is helping. I am worried if she is getting enough or not.
  • I will say I'm awful about nursing her to go back to sleep. I'm just too lazy to soothe her in another way when I know the boob works plus I can sleep while doing it haha
  • kvrunskvruns member
@fitlady21 that's me too! Except the past few Days it stopped working and he won't nurse back to sleep and it is driving me crazy
  • @fitlady21 and @ZoeFer my lo does fall asleep on his own for bed and naps, so he can self soothe. I do believe he is actually really hungry at night since he barely eats during the day. Thankfully I'm not worried he's getting enough, he's 18 pounds right now. I'm just feeling at a loss on how to switch this because waking up every 2 hours at night still is killing me. Of course he got a cold while he was making progress with the sleep training so we'll be starting from scratch again I'm sure once he's better.
  • Ugh! Another clogged duct... In my left boob again!  Just needed to vent that.
  • So we are weaning right now which is making me equal parts excited and sad. M is no longer nursing at all and I'm just producing enough for one pump a day which I'm doing as I type this. Is it normal for the milk at this stage to be greenish? It's not green it just has this green tint to it. I'm assuming it's still ok to give him I've just never noticed it looking like this before.
  • I'm slowly weaning, too. I've noticed when I pump now (only about an ounce a session), it's more concentrated. Like I don't have much foremilk, it just gets to the good stuff quicker. I don't think I'd say it's green-ish, but the color is definitely different than it used to be.

I feel like mine takes on a little bit of a green tint. Because of my postnatal vitamin. Definitely turns my pee an almost neon green tint so I guess it gets in the milk too, which makes sense. Maybe that??

Well I forgot to put it in the fridge so it ended up being a non issue.

Edit because the Bump ate my post: Guys, I can't remember our last nursing session. I am glad to be done but I wish I had payed closer attention to the last time he nursed because now it's over and I don't remember it. After how hard it was and how proud I am we made it this long I would have liked to have had that memory. Why didn't I pay attention?!? Seriously I've cried about it twice now.
  • @MrsMaryK2016 I'm so sorry! I understand the sadness about that, it's something I think about a lot! For some things, how will you even know it's the last time? With that in mind make sure you're cutting yourself some slack. It's hard to live each day wondering if certain times will be a last. If you're still pumping is there any way you could try nursing one last time?

It's like after you break up with someone: we only ever seem to remember the good parts, but there's a reason you broke up in the first place. While I'm not weaning yet I remember when I was finally finished with ODD and it was amazing - I felt like I had some of my life back.
