I am so glad you saw that number on formula!! Elise has started to really cut down on her formula intake. I always feed her a bottle first and then solids, but she is weaning herself and really wants just the solids. She drinks about 18-22 oz a day. She eats A LOT of solids. I feel a lot better now!
Yay @babycakesday! That is wonderful news! I had written before that DD1 was extremely sensitive to dairy when I tried it at 6 months but was fine by 9 months. I'm glad this is the case for you too!
So true on the being close to having toddlers! I don't feel like she is a little baby anymore. My kiddo LOVES her solids so that is good. The update said to try for 3 meals of solids plus 2 snacks a day. We just started finger foods and the textures are definitely strange for her but she LOVES her purees. I guess it makes sense if they say to switch to whole milk at 1, can't just completely make the change overnight- have to work up to it.
I've been so worried that my kiddo is eating so much during solid meals and really cutting back on bm. I've always thought "food before one was just for fun" but that was to make myself feel better if he didn't seem to be eating a lot--I wasn't prepared for the opposite to happen. He's only drinking like 4-8 oz in an 8 hour day, whereas it used to be 10-12. I was even contemplating cutting back on solids to make sure he'd take more Bm, but that seems counterintuitive. He eats 3 meals and gets 1 snack, mainly because the ped said he wasn't gaining weight at a steady rate, but maybe I've done too much too fast.
LO usually will nurse and get 1/2 a banana at breakfast. Then he goes to daycare, gets a solid meal, then a 4-5oz bottle, then a solid meal, then a 4-5oz bottle. If he's really hungry, he'll get a third 4-5oz bottle. I pick him up, he gets a bit of whatever dinner we eat. Then I muse him again. Then we might maybe do a little fruit and yogurt snack. Nursing before bed and then nursing 1-2x at night. So he eats a TON and the pedi has Ben super happy with his progress.
Yeah I'd say where in the realm of about 6-8oz solids daily and 20oz BM! They're working themselves out of babyhood and into toddlerhood. Ahhh!!! Who's ready for the next baby?!? Haha
My twins are SUPER dairy intolerant. Prescription formula and all. Our ped said most babies outgrow it by 9 months so DH and I have been discussing how to try it. Well last night I noticed that while feeding them, their purees looked different. I looked at the labels and *%#^ they were two different ones with the same color label. One must have been in the wrong box at the store. So Beck got butter last night. He screamed from 9-11 and then was up at 4:30 for the day today. I'm hoping it's teeth (he has a huge bump on his top left), but crap I feel like a terrible mom.
Awww mom guilt is real! I've tried reintroducing dairy twice to my diet and it has not gone well. Chunky spitup everywhere. Accidents happen @shanparadise. Try not to be too hard in yourself!!
My chunky baby is no longer chunky She only gained 13 oz from her 6 month to 9 month appointments. The doctor said to feed her more meat, avocados, eggs, peanut butter. I also made more lactation cookies, I'm drinking Mothers Milk tea and TONS of water. I feel terrible. The doctor isn't too worried. Her height growth was good and she's meeting all milestones.
My baby is the same way (5 oz in a month), but I think genetics play a role as well. As long as they're healthy and meeting milestones, my dr has said not to worry too much. I've been trying to limit distractions during nursing as well, but it's definitely hard when they're always on the go! I can definitely relate to feeling a little guilty though.
@holly142 Don't be so hard on yourself, I bet some of that is due to her being more active now! I kind of expect a similar story when we go in for the 9mo check up...he crawls all over and is so interested in everything that I don't even know if he eats enough when I feed him because he's too distracted!

Breastfed babies also don't gain as much weight as formula fed babies and I believe they kinda slow in weight gain. Make sure you're using the newest WHO-CDC chart for breastfed babies to calculate their %. Plus, now that they're moving a lot more, they're burning a ton more calories. I wouldn't be too worried
Thanks ladies! DD2 is crawling all the time. Plus more distracted while nursing. I'm feeling less guilty. Just going to keep nursing her, also try to have less distractions around and feeding her.
For real-babies and toddlers are so weird with eating! I had a friend whose daughter didn't gain ANY weight between her 12month and 18 month appt. Her daughter is a healthy happy girl but apparently just burns everything off!!!!
L is finally getting the hang of picking up pieces of food and getting them in her mouth. Not just on the ground for our dog. A real win!! Haha! Last night I made her some baby "pancakes". My mom is trying them with her today. I'm curious to see how they work out. Hopefully she likes them, lol.
@TiffRox81 yay!!! S is good at picking the food up...she struggles to keep it in her mouth though. Do you think the texture helps her? I've been wondering about that because S does well with puffs and non slippery things...but give her fruit or something with a similar texture and it slides right out.
@kmurdock925 I'd definitely agree with that! I haven't even ventured into the slippery stuff. I know I'd be wasting my time lol. She's just proven to be able to handle the puffs. I'm going to try and stick with foods like that then move into things a bit more slippery??
I'd say AJ has gotten a good grip in picking up small items to put in his mouth...he ate a piece of the dog's kibble yesterday morning... I picked AJ up and was instantly assaulted with dog breath!! Good thing I buy all natural, human grade dog food
HA!!! The baby has dog breath. That is so gross. My dogs don't leave any scraps and eat like they haven't been fed in weeks so I would be surprised if S can find any kibbles...until she learns how to open the bin...
My dog eats all her food within minutes even when using her slow eater bowl. DH gave the dog her food and then started cleaning dishes 2 nights ago. All of a sudden he realized DD2 was quiet. She was putting kibble in her mouth Thankfully our dog isn't food aggressive. She backed away looking at DD2 like, WTF? DH fished out FIVE pieces of kibble from DD2's mouth. Yuck!
Breastfeeding mamas, anyone thought about their weaning plans? Extended breastfeeding? Stopping at (or right after) their birthdays? Letting the baby wean themselves? I have a love/hate relationship with M needing me so much. So stopping at 1 is appealing but I think I'm going to let her wean herself.
With DD1, at 12 months old I started replacing 1 nursing session with one sippy cup of milk every 3 weeks. My body and DD1 easily adjusted. I kept the before bed nursing session until 18 months old. This worked really well for us and I plan on doing the same with DD2.
I plan to do extended breastfeeding and let F wean himself. Especially in the evening, but the more solids he eats throughout the day, hopefully the less I'll have to pump at work
@LDSJM123 I plan to go to 1 year, unless she decides to wean sooner. We plan to start TTC #2 this summer, and I'd love to have at least a couple months of my body to myself, so if we could be done at a year, that would be awesome. I do want her to lead though, so if she still needs to nurse a couple times a day, that's fine. She's already dropped maybe two daytime feedings since she decided she loves solids, so we'll see where we are in a few months! I have stopped pumping though.
I'm hoping to get down to 4 sessions a day (at wake up, before two naps and before bed) by his first bday. After that, I'll see how much he's digging food and make a plan from there. Part of me hopes he wants to wean but I know I'll be emotional about it. The other issue is we've been advised not to start cows milk because he doesn't like it when I eat dairy. Will hope to see an allergist before his first bday as well.
@LDSJM123 I'm hoping to wean by one year, but I feel like I've been slacking on this solids thing and need to get a good routine if I want the weaning to happen! We just had his 9 month checkup today and the ped said he wants me to be doing three meals a day already and cut out any night feeds, plus he said that by one year half of his calories should be from solids. I've still been feeding on demand and mostly just breastfeeding, so now I feel like I'm behind or something! Ahhh.

Well I'm the minority in that I will be starting the weaning around 11 months...as we transition to dairy. I hate pumping so much but there's no way I'd quit. I'm grateful that my body continues to cooperate in the realm of milk production and feel I owe it to her. She loves food so much, I can't imagine she'll miss BF'ing as long as she's being well fed.
@TiffRox81- I would love to know more about what you mean when you said weaning at 11 months as you transition to dairy. Are you replacing breast milk with cow's milk or formula? Despite my best efforts (brewer's yeast, fenegreek, oats, Mother's Milk tea, power pumping, etc), I'm about 4 oz short on breast milk each evening. Our pedi said no cows milk before 1 so it looks like I need to buy a little formula. I'm just wondering if there is another way?
@winnie1122 I am not bfing but my ped told me the same thing - 3 meals a day plus 2 snacks to get ready for his 1 year. I have been doing 5 bottles of 6oz of formula and feeding solids when it was convenient for me, but she said I should be at 3-4 bottles with more solids. I feel behind as well! It's hard to change the routine, but I was able to drop a bottle since I started doing more solids. The peds said at 1 year we will be dropping formula and doing 3 glasses of milk so I should be getting ready for that, so I guess I need to start preparing Q for that major change!
@holly142 Some weaning research I did online said at the 11 month mark it's acceptable to start adding cow's milk to each feeding, and increase the amount each week. The rational is that you can't really expect them to be in love with whole milk right away, so a good introduction is mixing it into whatever you're feeding baby - BM or formula - little by little each week. Also still follow routine by warming the bottle, if baby likes that. I intend on emailing our pedi to confirm this sounds like something he approves of, but it made sense to me!
Like you, I pretty much produce either exactly what's needed, or short and we're dipping into freezed bags. But at this point those are dwindling. I might be supplementing with formula before the 11 month mark, too. I'm wondering if that would be a bit much for her stomach....formula, BM and cow's milk, so that's another thing I need to ask the pedi, with regard to my 11 month transition plan.
A girlfriend of mine has a little boy that has quite the appetite. Around 10 months, she was almost unable to keep up with him entirely. Her daycare provider suggested giving him cow's milk at that point, in addition to what she was able to pump/nurse. I feel like she would have ran it by her pedi, but I'm not entirely sure.
Well. First night of trying to cut out his 'midnight snack' was a total fail. He woke up around 3, DH got up and tried rocking him back to sleep, then tried letting him cry for a little bit to see if he'd go on his own, then I went in to try to calm him down after he ramped himself up so much. I got him to sleep rocking him, but as soon as I would put him back in the crib he would wake up instantly and scream and stand up to try to get back to me. We did this for probably an hour total til I finally couldn't stay awake anymore and just let him nurse. 5 minutes and he was out like a light and slept the rest of the morning. Ugh.

On a side note - I was so excited, I found this well reviewed Baby Bolognese recipe over the weekend and made it, in an attempt to get her something new and filling. She hates it. She hasn't hated anything! I think it's just not liquidy enough. I mixed it with a pureed carrot mix that I happened to have in the fridge for her, and then she ate it. I told my husband looks like I'll be making pureed carrots for the next year, with how much of that bolognese I have in the fridge and freezer!!!
@winnie1122 that's impressive that you tried for an hour!!!! I definitely do not have that patience. I try to rock Elijah for like 5 mins and if it's not going anywhere, I'm like, alright, here's your boob.
My pediatrician said the same thing about 3 meals by nine months. Well every time I try to up it feom 2 meals to 3, I end up with a super constipated baby. She still has a night feeding, although the past few night have been 2 feedings. If I try to let her cry it out, she ends up being fully awake and then it takes me forever to put her back sleep. I feel so far behind, but I'm also just trying to keep her happy and comfortable.
I'm glad I'm not the only one, the doc made me feel dumb for still doing night feedings like I should have known to cut that out long ago! I've just been following my kid's cues this whole time and trying to see what other people are doing, so I didn't think there was anything wrong with it until he said that! Maybe I won't force it, I mean I'm not planning on letting him get up for ice cream at midnight when he's three but he's still just a baby right now. And I'm not going to be functional if I do many nights like last night trying to rock him to sleep without a snack!

when do babies go down to one nap per day?
