  • @Sugargirl1019  Me, too!  The paperwork says they will mail a decision within 21 days of receiving the letter, so I shouldn't have to wait long for some sort of response.  I'm kind of 50/50 on whether I think it will happen, but I have to try.

I'm in Northeast Alabama. Alabama loves some tornadoes in April.

South Georgia here. I have my house (not Mouse) really cold so I will freeze all day and when the power goes out because I know it will I'll be glad it isn't on. Perfect plan if you as me lol
  • I'm keeping an eye on these storms too. So far the worst of it has passed north of us, but we are still under tornado watch for another hour or so.

And ugh, why am I so nervous for my appointment today? It's been a full month since I've heard the heartbeat and longer than that since I've seen the little peep.

@Doggiedoc2016 It wasn't terrible, a little skunky.  So was the St. Pauli's I tried.  I was really missing the taste of beer.  I decided I needed to try it after doing yardwork this past weekend.  It's so refreshing on a hot day!

ETA: I'm in CA, so warming up quickly out here!

  • I hope everyone with bad weather again today stays safe!

I'm surprised I don't miss beer more. I'm sure that'll change and I'm glad that I'll be back on the beer wagon once it's pumpkin beer time again!

FFWC: I had a roast beef sandwich yesterday because it was ALL I could think about. I basically shoveled it into my mouth. Then I had another one today. I will stop now, but oh my God.. so delicious.

ETA: I've been feeling super meh about food for about a week, so I figured I'd go for it.
  • @labby18 FX that you keep power. We drove through an intersection yesterday that didn't have power to its traffic light. Hoping we don't get any other outages around here. The college put in generators after Ivan, so we should all be good. But holy cow it's coming down!

We're creating a bunch of new documents for my department. My coworker is arguing with me about quotations and punctuation. She is adamant that the period goes outside the quotation marks because she "saw it on the internet."

She is wrong. I am ragey. If these documents move forward and are finalized with the incorrect placement, I'm going to refuse to edit anything else.
People annoy me. The closing quotation mark CLOSES that quote.... that would be ending it with  no punctuation. But, alas, the internet can't be wrong, so I guess I'm confused. :expressionless:

These gifs are how I feel about it (profanity in the first one).

Oh... you read it on the internet?

I guess my degree in technical writing doesn't matter to you.

  • *snip*
Omg stuff like that makes me ragey. I'm a lawyer and when I get documents in full of grammatical errors I can't even focus on the content. I think my alternative career should be proofreading
I get really distracted when there are a ton of errors. We have an out-of-specification alert that gets sent out that has the wrong its/it's in it, and it practically leaps on the page and punches me in the face every time I have to send it out.

She actually just said to me, "well it doesn't really matter."
  • @mrsmarygs So funny. I just listened to a podcast the other day about that lawsuit and the Oxford comma. Punctuation does matter!

This comma conversation is making me twitchy. I do a little editing on the side for money, and some of the horrific stuff that comes across my desk is just...indescribable. I edited an academic paper last month that may have given me grammatical ptsd.
Since I work in a college setting, I get requests from students all the time to proof their papers. Most of the time they are fairly good. One doctoral dissertation I proofed was fairly perfect. A few papers though, I almost want to scream, "Did you even try!" Those I just mark the absolute worst mistakes, and try to warn them that their paper is terrible. Otherwise, they come back to me complaining that I didn't help them get a good grade. Ugh.

This paper was from a post doc who planned to take it to a conference. I was dumbfounded! I can't imagine how they ever wrote and passed a dissertation with grammar that poor! The first thing I did was go through and take out every unnecessary comma- the tally came up to over 1,000 misplaced commas. That's a lot of comma splices! I really earned my money with that one.

  • I love the Oxford Comma. That is all.
  • People at my work don't believe the Oxford comma is needed. We're lawyers. Drives me crazy. The Oxford comma is totally important.
