Re: Weekly Randoms 4/3

  • I understand the thinking behind omitting the Oxford comma, used only by the AP style if I'm correct. Since the comma is replacing the word "and," it makes sense that you wouldn't want to say "and and." However, punctuation was created to avoid misreading, and that rule far outweighs any other logic rules.

@bridge-and-wall Do you have a house style or a particular style that you use at your work?

  • I was very surprised that between high school and college something had changed and I kept getting marked off on my papers not knowing what I did wrong lol.
  • @mrsmarygs We don't have a specific style or guide that we use. We use Blue Book for citation. I personally use MOUS, but I doubt that's well known outside the Texas legal community. I used Chicago prior to law school (and was required to learn it and AP in a proofreading class In grad school).

I know I'm a little late to the party, but I judge people on their poor use of the English Language. This goes for not just writing, but also spoken. One of my biggest pet peeves are people who don't know the difference between specific and Pacific. I actually one time had an employee send me an email with the typed word, pacific. Seriously?! Pacific is an Ocean.
OMG! Yes!!! I work in claims and one of my coworkers kept telling our policyholder over the phone that their claim was assigned to a "pacific adjuster" instead of a specific adjuster and I just died on the inside lol! Eventually management caught on to it and she stopped saying that but it was hilarious.

Edited because I can't possibly talk crap about the way other people talk and write without correcting my mistakes. :P
  • Why is it that crib bumpers have been determined unsafe, yet every crib bedding set I look at still comes with one? It's very annoying to me.
DH and I were just talking about this yesterday!! It's so frustrating. What the hay were these companies thinking?  Is there a certain age where they ARE safe or something?

Sort of... when baby can roll around and lift their head and stuff, like DS is 14 months and I let him have his boppy and a big soft blankie in his crib because he is very much able to move around and uncover himself and stuff, but they're (crib bumpers) still fairly unsafe :/ some babies have gotten stuck under/in them and stuff.

    Ediyed for clarity

From what I read, they still sale them because people still buy them.

Because people don't know any better, and they're just out to make money, at the expense of some poor child's life.

  • I feel so accomplished. I actually cleaned a bit today. That hasn't happened in awhile. My SO mentioned getting a cleaning or laundry person to help and I feel too embarrassed. I would have to clean before the cleaning person got here. We live in a 2 br 1 bathroom house and we just have so much stuff (and a big old dog) that it gets cluttered and dirty so quickly. I want to do some serious remodeling before the baby gets here.
  • @lap018 yessss DS is always hitting his head! I think he does it on purpose most of the time though.. And he loves to stick his legs through them.

@HollyGolightly09 we were given the advice to just get crib sheets and a cute crib skirt because the big blanket and the bumpers that come with a bedding set cannot be used for over a year. So why buy? And they aren't cheap! We did use breathable and collapsible bumpers because DS kept banging his head on the slats and getting limbs caught in between them
I guess that's what I'll do, but (and, yes, I know this is ridiculous... and, no, I'm not getting them) the bumpers are usually the cute part of the crib sets!

  • @Sugargirl1019 let me know if you get the Dino bump lol!!
  • I have officially reached the point where when I try to sit up/flex my abs, my stomach gets all triangular and pointy and my belly button pops out. It looks so freakin weird. My sister calls it the dinosaur hump. She's also very weird lol
So that happened to me with DS and it ended up being diastasis recti. I'd really recommend trying to avoid making the Dinohump happen if you can. Lol it took months to heal my diastasis.
  • @wyomama0427 I love that you call it the dinohump! I tell DH he gets dinosaur arms, because after a few glasses of wine, he starts keeping his elbows bent and close to his sides, like a T-Rex or velociraptor, haha!

  • @Sugargirl1019 let me know if you get the Dino bump lol!!
I'd have to say it didn't happen. But if it's diastasis recti showing it's ugly face early on, I guess I wouldn't want it to happen to me!1 I AM curious though..

  • Had to google that actually... not something I'd like to have any time soon lol. I had it with DS too, and my sister with my nieces, I thought it was normal D: maybe I should have worked a little harder on getting my core back in shape after DS lol
  • @mrs_tacos that's so funny! When I was younger I used to pretend I was a T-Rex. I'd pretend I had a big tail I could knock stuff over with.. I watched way too many dinosaur documentaries lol
  • Random? I've decided I have a love/hate relationship with fans. I like that they help with cooling and are cheaper than AC. I hate the noise, and seeing it going.

Is it the buffeting noise you don't like, or the white noise aspect? I have a Dyson bladeless fan that doesn't buffet wind and cools more effectively at a lower amount of noise than a traditional bladed fan. They're pricey, but you can get them refurbished for maybe $100-150?
  • @Msashley2010 hooray for no -2!! And it's very strange. Lol
  • @Msashley2010 Yay! I was hoping y'all would get your real usernames back!

  • I was so excited that my boobs weren't growing while I was nursing. Now that we weaned a month ago, they're starting to pop out of my bra :disappointed: ugh.
  • @wyomama0427 I have the same problem. I swear I've gone up 2 bra sizes
  • @wyomama0427 Now I'm scared! I almost went up three cups size by the end of my first pregnancy but hadn't noticed anything with this one. But I think our nursing might be coming to an end due to supply... I don't need/want to get bigger  :|
  • @kelseyrayay so far I think I'll just need to go up one size but if they grow as much as they did with DS I'm in trouble....
@Carebella I really thought I got lucky and that they wouldn't grow this time since they blew up with DS lol I guess it was just nursing that kept them in check. I have noticed that my milk has already changed back to colostrum! Not the clear stuff I had the first time, but very very yellow. Like when my first milk came in with DS. It's so weird!

Yall...so across the street 2 houses down from me (the 2 story in the pic) these people own this house but dont live there. No they don't rent it. It just sits empty other than the once a quarter they stop by for a week. (They've owned the house like this for 3 years). THEY JUST NOW decided they want internet...so this is happening in my front yard. It's like a grave sized hole. I am sooo mad. If they dont replace the sod imma be FURIOUS. It took 2 years since the last time they dug that up to get grass to grow there again.
