Since some of us have already had our scans and others will be having them in the near future, I thought we could have a catch-all thread for anatomy scans.
We had our anatomy scan last week baby was really lazy and was not in the mood to cooperate. She was able to get all her necessary measurements (after over an hour). Baby refused to show us their bits so we officially are team green (I didn't even realize this could happen). Happy for a healthy and sweet baby.
@NYCProf, with our first the scan took over an hour, but the woman working with us was very thorough, and explained everything that she saw. She was also personable and sweet, so it didn't seem like it took long at all.
@NYCProf our tech gave us the option of no talking and a quick scan or she would talk is through it and it would be longer. She also tried really really hard to get the sex of the baby and even had us try to go for a walk and drink cold water to get baby moving, which I think she just did because she felt bad we couldn't find out
You guys got me nervous that I won't find out the sex on Monday now at my NT scan baby was stubborn and wouldn't move to get the right measurements so hopefully we can just get a little peek between the legs
@rmarble23 I was told to drink a glass of something sugary before my appointment along with having a full bladder. I had orange juice (I typically don't eat a lot of sugar) , in hindsight I would have picked something a lot more sugary or perhaps had some chocolate. The tech said she would rather chase baby than wake them up
thank you for the suggestion @lifeislove87 ...i typically empty my bladder b/c in previous u/s they have complained even when i dont feel "full" but i think i can plan for an OJ or something on the ride in
I'll be 18+4 when I have mine done. I got referred to an MFM specialist for my anatomy scan since I'm overweight. I'm guessing the machine is better there?
Has anyone had a transvaginal at 20 weeks? I was told at my last US that the next one would be my A/S and it would take 40 minutes at my US for measuring and checking sex then I would have a transvaginal that would take 3 minutes. I never had one with my previous pregnancies but I'm also in a different state now, with a new OB.

good to know! My scan isn't scheduled yet... we are supposed to schedule it for 2 weeks out when I go in for a check up on Tuesday...so I'll. E somewhere in the 20week mark! Im kind of excited to get to see her for an hour lol
Around here, docs like to do 2 - early at 16 weeks (which I'll do on Monday) and then again around 20. Was the case with DD as well (different ob practice).
I was also told to drink fruit juice. I normally have a pop in the morning. Should I probably hold off on this until after? I feel like the caffeine will make it bounce off the walls in there.
I had mine last week and it went great. We found out we are having a boy! My DD was not happy. She asked the tech if she was kidding haha. Though I asked her today if she was more excited for a brother and she said "I'm getting there."
I drank some lemonade and ate some m&ms about a half hour before my appointment and the baby was moving all over. She could tell within aboooout a minute that it was a boy.
@ashaw512 , I had to have a transvaginal at 20 weeks with my last baby to check my cervix. I'm assuming it's because I have a history of cervical dysplasia and had the leep procedure.
My baby was extremely stubborn for the NT scan and didn't move until the tech gave me apple juice to drink, they said (and were right) that it takes about 10 minutes to kick in. Going to be drinking some when we eventually have our anatomy scan!
I will be 20 weeks and 4 days mine is not until the 27th! We are team green, but it still makes me ancy. I also will be having a transvaginal because I had a bleed and they want to check my placenta again to see if it has moved up. Did you ladies notice how quickly they found the gender meaning it was a boy? I looked up and some said they can see equally as easy, so just curious.
I will be 16w6d for mine on Monday.... I thought it was wicked early but they based it off my EDD when scheduling so I assumed they knew what they were doing
Mine is 2/2 and I will be 21w1d. They usually say 18w - 20w but I'm fine waiting an extra week... all major organs should be to a point where they can effectively assess them which is really what I want.
@Mport90 We had to go in for a very late dating scan this week, 16 weeks. The little guy was hiding his parts for an hour! They had us run next door to the dr for the regular appt and told us we could come back for one quick last try and he had finally flipped over and uncrossed his legs. Dd also didn't cooperate for over an hour and finally uncrossed her legs right as the tech was going to give up too. I thought for sure we were having another girl, because I had heard girls cross their legs more, but nope or boy is modest too! Lol if your wanting to stay team green close your eyes at first just in case lo has their bum up. Lol
We had the A/S on Thursday, and it went well. All toes, fingers and organs were accounted for. Only issue that popped up was a low lying placenta. Not really concerned. It should move up by 40 weeks.
My AS was on Thursday and I was 18+5. Even though my little lady was bouncing all over the place the ultrasound tech was able to see everything very clearly. She easily confirmed that we are having a girl and gave us a lovely crotch shot to take home with us (lol). The whole thing took about 45 minutes and she talked us through the entire thing. It was so interesting seeing closeups of my little girl's brain and organs. Loved seeing her cute little face and limbs too of course! All my ultrasounds are done at MFM and they can switch it to 3D at the push of a button, which is also awesome. I didn't have to drink anything special or have a full bladder. The tech made it seem super easy to see everything! We ended up with a roll of about 15 photos to take home with us.
My A/S is scheduled for this Tuesday and I will be 19+1. I'm a FTM and just curious if this is the u/s they do part of it vaginally? I keep being told that they do it, but I figured that would've been earlier on.
So they didn't say anything about a full bladder for an A/S. Is it needed? I hated that part of early ones, and I can't remember whether I did or not with DD.

Mine requested it. It couldn't hurt to do it just in case.

Mine said full bladder not necessary. However, you could always go with a full bladder then ask if it's necessary, if not, just go pee.
Funny story on the transvaginal u/s... the nurse told me to undress from the waist down for my NT scan because she said if the doctor couldn't get a good image through the abdomen he would have to do it transvaginally...
Well, the doctor came in and he went to tuck the paper to protect my clothing (which I've had others do for previous u/s in my previous pregnancy)... and there was nothing there, kind of awkward!! So I either look like I don't wear underwear, took it upon myself to just get naked, or I don't know what... so yeah, it was very awkward!!
Lesson learned, don't assume transvaginal unless they explicitly tell you so... I'll never do that again, even if the doctor was to leave for me to get undressed. I don't listen to that nurse anymore.
Just had my early anatomy scan (I'm 16+4 today). Little guy looks great, and was bouncing around (likely due to the iced latte I had in hopes of getting him moving!)
Funny side note: his limbs are measuring a full week ahead of his gestational age. The tech looked at me and DH (we're both pretty tall), and reassured us that this was likely just genetic, not an issue. The other measurements are a few days ahead, so at least he's proportionately big!

I am also seeing a MFM for mine as I am overweight as well. My doctor has them in house and they come on Tuesdays and Thursdays so I just had to schedule while they were there. I am having mine right at 20 weeks as my doctor will not do them before but want them done at exactly 20 weeks. I just went last week and will be back on the 24th because of this policy.
I was told nothing about it juice or anything about what type makes me want to call and ask. Normally my doctor gives out papers on trans-vaginal if that is what we are going to have on what to expect. I guess some people get in there and are very surprised (I can say I was one of those people when I had to go to the ER for pain which turned out to be cysts).
went in for mine today and i knew better but decided to trust the schedulers. somehow they got my EDD at 6/6 even though i was right there when she was on the phone scheduling and she said 6/20. we are too early and wasted the morning going in. thankfully DH and I are off work so no money was lost. the tech today asked if maybe i had an irregular period and they were confused as to my lmp...uhh no this is an IVF baby there is no guess work in it at all. anyways they told us we could try and do part of the u/s being 16w 6d today and then have to come back after 18w to finish and probably have to pay oop as insurance isn't likely to cover two u/s. SOOOOO FRUSTRATED
I was told that by the time you're halfway through the pregnancy there is typically enough liquid in your uterus that a full bladder isn't truly necessary. But since I pee roughly every 10 minutes right now, I don't feel like it's a problem really...even if I peed on the way to the ultrasound room, they'd probably be fine. Ha!

I have to drink the glucola before my u/s, so I would assume having soda instead of the recommended juice would be sufficient, @alm52386.

@TGmomtobe90 Mine was not transvag. In fact, I was told that after my 9 week dating scan all of my future scans would be external.
