@BabyRobbinsAdventure definitely stick with newborn size. My babies were at least 8.5 lbs and they both wore newborn for about 6 weeks. They were swimming in 0-3 for over a month. I wouldn't worry about the umbilical cord, just pack the nb outfit that you want. Their little umbilical stump doesn't get it the way as much as you'd think, and clothes shouldn't bother it.
I packed nb pjs, but that was before we had so many cute hand me down nb outfits. I'm thinking about switching out the pjs for a cute outfit. Or I'll pack both, their clothes are teeny and don't take up much space.

  • Stupid question. I was packing the hospital bag since I seem to be having some early labor symptoms the last couple of days (back pain, loose BM, baby is very low, fatigue more than usual)
When packing for baby, do I need to bring a certain type of outfit (onesie, pjs, shirt/pants) because of their umbilical stump? I packed a cute onesie and leggings/pants, but then I freaked thinking it would rub the stump so I also packed a footie PJ type outfit but is not as cute. Both are NB size. Then I thought, do I have her wear 0-3 months until stump falls off since that might be more comfortable for her?
these are the thoughts that kept me up last night.
You can put them in anything, really. Both with DS and this LO we start with the little white kimono-style newborn t-shirts... today is the first day LO is in an actual zip up footie outfit

  • Has any of the STMs had experienced with pre-e AFTER your due date has passed? I went to L&D Monday night for sure that my water was leaking and my bp was 139/89 and then 128/81 half an hour later and then at my appointment yesterday it was 140s then 130s when they rechecked. all of my bp readings prior have been really good (like 115/75). My OB didn't seemed concerned when I didn't have any other symptoms like headache or vision issues.. but I've never had bps that high before.

  • @R0824H I had moderate pre-e with DD1, and went past my due date a week and a half. Then got induced. But the induction was more due to worry about her size. Then again my Ob at that time was totally neglectful when it came to my symptoms. My BP was high all the time for the last 2 months, and got higher with each visit.

@yellingbanana was DD1 a bigger baby when born or were the weight estimates off?? my last estimate was 8lb 8 oz the day before my due date. I would have completely been concerned with a rising trend!! smh at that OB

  • @R0824H if they are collecting urine they are checking for proteins which is the easiest test for indication of pre-e... that BP is very mildly high, and elevated BP and pre-e are not synonymous - there needs to be multiple markers to be Dx.  Likely fluid retention that is causing the increase but certainly keep an eye on it at home if you can.  You know what you're looking for so don't hesitate to call if you get symptomatic.

  • Hey STMs - quick baby-wearing question for you!  I really want to start using my moby, but the weight guidelines say 8 lbs and DS is still under 6 lbs (he's a peanut). Is the 8 lbs a hard guideline or do you think it's ok to try to wear him now?

  • Ok, this is a stupid question, but humor me please. All day today since I woke up I've been peeing about every 1-2 hours. This is pretty standard lately, but its actually really large volumes today. Like normal pre-pregnancy volumes or more instead of the tiny amounts that I had been urinating. I don't feel especially overhydrated and I'm not leaking between- I can make it to the bathroom. There is no way that you would be able to "hold" your water if it broke, right? In my head I know that they are different "vaults" and there theoretically should not be a sphincter under voluntary control involved with the one that holds the amniotic fluid, but it just seems odd to have such a large volume suddenly. I'll be at the doctor later today so I'll get my urine, bp checked, ect. Also, I lost my mucous plug Saturday and seem to be losing more mucous a each bathroom trip.
  • @karmba I wore DD in the Moby before she was 8lbs.... seem to work fine?

  • @karmba the Boba wrap I have says 5 pounds so I think you're good.
  • @sarah12 I definitely could not hold in my amniotic fluid so I think youre good. Maybe baby shifted a little and thats why your output is different?

  • @karmba thanks for asking about the wraps. I had the same question :)

  • Question: What size clothes did you pack in your hospital bag for yourself? I'm down to one pair (of FI's) pajama pants that fit. I wear them everyday so I don't want to pack them yet. But I have a couple pairs that I just outgrew in the last few weeks. I can technically still squeeze into them, they just aren't comfy. Will those fit again?
  • @tinattt23 I packed my husband's super soft size XXL tshirts (I am normally a women's XS/S for reference), a pair of my regular old sweatpants, and an oversized zip up hoodie (women's M). I didn't wear my own clothes in the hospital though - stayed in the hospital gown. What I brought was fine for going home.

  • @sarah12 Totally just speculation, but maybe it's some water weight from swelling that your body is all of a sudden releasing?

  • @tinattt23 id pack whatever fits now just in case. I had a ton of swelling after delivery, so between that and just wanting loose-fitting/stretchy clothes from the soreness/hefty pad situation, I was wearing whatever was comfortable pre-delivery. Yoga pants, leggings, loose tops, pj pants, etc.
  • For those who are on pregnancy/baby  2+... When did your night sweats end (if you had them)?  I remember them from DS but don't remember for how long.  3 weeks PP and waking up soaking wet.  Yuck.

  • @DiFazette with dd1 I had night sweats for 4 months :( hoping this time is shorter.
    DD1 5/23/14, DD2 12/5/16   Baby #3 on the way!

  • How do you time your contractions?  I can tell that my uterus tightens but sometimes it's hard to tell when it starts and stops because the baby is so big now that it feels pretty firm to the touch all the time.  Do you just go off of the cramping/pain sensation?
  • @penelope4612 although my stomach is pretty consistently tight due to baby, there is definitely a different tightness with a contraction that I can feel when I touch/poke/prod at my belly.  But generally when I'm timing I just go by the internal sensation vs the physical tightness on the outside, if that makes sense?
  • @penelope4612 I have the same question.
The entirety of my last labor I wouldn't have known how to time any of my contractions either. When I was in active labor, there weren't breaks. And before that I couldn't ever really figure out the stop and start line...
I'm just figuring I won't make any decisions based on contraction timing unless it becomes obvious but instead just base it off intensity?

  • @slartybartfast I agree. FTM so I'm not sure how easy or hard timing will be. But our birth class taught us that "emotional signposts" are more reliable anyways. At least for a typical labor. Plus, stressing about timing and tracking just ramps up anxiety and adrenaline, which can slow/stall labor. So crappy circle I hope to avoid by never downloading the damn timing apps.
  • @tinattt23 - what are emotional signposts?
  • For leaving the hospital clothes I wore maternity leggings, a stretchy tank top, and a long sleeve wrap. 10 days pp and I'm still wearing maternity leggings daily because I like the coverage of the full panel when I pump/attempt to nurse
  • thanks @DiFazette i'll for sure keep an eye on it this week

Debated giving this a love tit because it's a terrible answer, but I appreciate your honesty nonetheless  ;)

BTW @sourlemon so happy you had a great RCS experience.  What a world of difference, huh?

  • Here's a real dumb one:

If your 3 week old baby is sleeping peacefully at night and you realize its been 4 hours since her last diaper change, do you wake her up? Asking for a friend...

While I'm here... same question for feeding. I'm not sure what age to stop waking her every couple of hours to eat. She was early but has regained her birth weight ans then some. I guess that's more a question for her pediatrician... but figured I would ask.

I asked at her appt this week bc twice she had slept more than 4 consecutive hours.... my pedi said ideally she'll eat every 2-3hrs but if sleeping, particularly overnight, can go up to but no more than 4hrs until they reach 9-10lbs. After that there's less of a need to wake them.
DS was 9.5lbs when he was born so this really wasn't an issue but this little one was only 7.9lbs at birth and had dropped to 6.14oz the day we left, so I'm waking her now if/when she hits 4hrs

Both of my pedis and my OBs have said once they hit birth weight again, it was fine to let them sleep. I personally wake and feed her every time I need to pump due to engorgment.

Disper changed, well I coat her everything in coconut oil and let it be. If a rash starts then I'll change every feed/poop. Otherwise, let LO sleep and get some extra yourself.

  • Okay, here's mine: how many wet/dirty diapers a day did other moms see in the first week? My boy will be 4 days old tomorrow and only had two wet diapers yesterday and one dirty. My milk hasn't really come in yet so I'm worried he's not getting enough to eat, though he's been on the boob constantly since we've been home.

Also, I had an epiphany earlier this evening: it's now my main job to worry about this little guy.
  • Thanks ladies! I will call the pediatrician to verify but it's good to know that others out there are on the same page!

@gowenc we supplemented with formula so my numbers are probably not super helpful. I would say on average we have had 8-10 changes per day regularly and almost all of them are both dirty and wet. I think she is on the high end for # of dirties though.

Those who have been here before -
I'm 39 weeks Friday. I went into labor with my son at 39 weeks and I'm having uncomfortable, regular contractions. I feel like if I just ignore them and lay around, they won't progress and like they could continue for days and days. I also feel like there's a decent chance if I walked or whatever, they may get going. But I'm losing a lot of sleep due to them (and I'm already really hurtin for sleep). I don't know if I should try and rest or try and encourage. I want to be as rested as possible when labor actually gets going and I don't want to waste energy on practice contractions... ugh.

Also, the only way I feel I'll get more than an hour of sleep at a time is by taking a benadryl or unisom. However, I know spontaneous labor tends to occur at night and I feel like taking a sleep aid may interrupt those natural signals so I've decided I'm done with that. But I'm really sleep deprived...

I have an appt Friday and will ask too but just wondering if anyone has any thoughts?
