Movement

Question for momma's who aren't 1st timers!
With my first child I felt him move at around 17 almost 18 weeks. I was laying in my belly, an a few times after that it was the same situation. I could only feel it when I was on my belly!
2nd child. I was around 14 weeks when I felt her move!
Im very small, 98 lbs usually and 110 now! I'm kinda confused because I thought I would have felt something by now :( I've laid in my belly multiple times, I'm constantly holding my belly when I lay down! I take baths like crazy when motivated my other two.
Has any other mom's had this issue?

Re: Movement

  • I can't decide if I've felt movement yet or not and I'll be 17 weeks tomorrow.  With my first, it was around 18 or 19 weeks.  With my second, I don't remember anything until like 21 weeks.  I know it's easy to say "it's still early, don't worry about it", but I find myself have moments of worry because I can't feel anything yet.  Let's just remember this a couple of months down the road when they are moving non-stop and we are miserable because they've run out of room.  LOL!

  • I think my first was around 18 weeks.  I'm almost 17 now and I have felt this one roll a few times but days apart.
  • I was 20 maybe 21 weeks when I felt DS. I just started feeling her at 17 weeks, but only when I eat an orange or drink oj. I guess she likes it. Or maybe she hates it and is trying to get me to stop.

  • With my first it was around 18wks.
I have had lots of maybe moments but today I for sure felt some kicks. I am 17wks.
  • I felt my first at 16 weeks exactly and you could even see it from the outside, it was super early! my twins have anterior placenta's though so I've just begun feeling regular little movements yesterday at 17 weeks. They're definitely not as obvious so far though as with my first. I'm also pretty petite so I expected to be feeling them more and sooner.
  • Being petite doesn't have a whole lot of bearing on when you'll feel movement. It depends on the placement of the placenta and how your uterus is situated in your abdomen.

With my first I felt sporadic movement starting around 18 weeks, with a BIG roll somewhere around 20 weeks (I can't remember exactly when, but it was after my AS). I didn't feel consistent movement until probably 24 weeks. With this one, I feel jabs every now and then that I am fairly certain are baby, but not 100% positive. I am 18 weeks. I have a retroverted uterus so it sits back pretty far, and my OB told me that could cause it to take longer for me to feel consistent movement. I am also not showing much yet this time (it could still pass for a burrito), so I know that my uterus is still pretty far back.

Not only do I have a tilted uterus (not sure if this is the same thing as @SnarkasaurusRex retroverted uterus) BUT my placenta is anterior (on the front), so I most likely won't feel baby until 20 weeks. I'm jealous of all you ladies already feeling baby!

  • At my last midwife appointment, she had asked if I started feeling the baby yet and I told her I didn't know if it was gas of it was the baby. She said that I most likely won't feel anything until 19-21 weeks being a FTM. And if I did, it would be hard to discern from a kick from something else. I also won't have a bump until then either. And much like @SnarkasaurusRex and @KirstinH88, I also have a retroverted uterus that sits pretty far back.

I'm pretty jealous of you ladies with cute bumps that are already feeling kicks and flutters.
  • Same here! I felt both prior babies by now. Hoping I feel this one soon. I've felt a few isolated movements, but nothing remotely consistantly. I had an anterior placenta with DD2 and still felt her by now.

  • @MWoodside I felt my second earlier than this one, so there's hope you'll get a nudge soon!
  • I felt my first @ 17 weeks.  I'm now 18 weeks and havent really felt anything.  Of course I have more blubber this time around, so maybe that has something to do with it?  Plus, I had a c-section so maybe all the nerves aren't quite connected like they once were.  Try not to worry, every baby/pregnancy is different.
  • I felt my first around 17 weeks and it was a solid kick.   Then I didn't feel her again until 20-21 weeks.  I felt my second at 14 weeks.  He was a mover my whole pregnancy.  This I felt a few weeks ago nut then nothing for 2 weeks.  My anxiety was through the roof.  Then last night the baby was moving again.  I'm 18 weeks.  It's so hard during this time.  Try not to worry every pregnancy is different.
  • My first I felt at 15 weeks, this one I felt at 14 weeks. But that doesn't always have to be that way. They say moms of multiples tend to feel the baby sooner but it all depends on the placement of your placenta, the baby etc. It's not a rule or something to expect by any means. This time it could be at over 20 weeks, and it's still well within your typical range.

  • I know as a FTM I'm not a good source. But I felt baby girl at 16 weeks when I know for a fact based on ultrasound that she was wedged far to the right. But I've noticed when she moves, (which I'm able to tell by Doppler and also which side my belly is lopsided on!) that I can't feel her. Not if she's on the left as much and not at all in the middle. But my uterus seems to be well forward, and so was my mom's. I'm also hyper aware of my body. So I guess it depends on where baby is and where the uterus is. From what the ladies above are saying, I can imagine even my next pregnancy will be different than this one. Oh and I should note it has not at all been regular so far.

I didn't feel either of my other kids until closer to 20 weeks.  With this one I have an anterior placenta, so I don't expect to feel anything anytime soon.

ETA: With my first I wasn't that busy.  I could sit around and focus on my growing belly.  With pregnancy 2 and 3 I'm running around a lot more and less focused on me.  I think this is impacting how early I'm able to feel the baby.

  • I for sure felt baby at 17 weeks exactly (I thought I felt something before...but turns out it was gas ;)) Now that I am almost weeks I feel the baby pretty regularly...it's still just slight pokes and butterflies at this point though. I have no idea where my placenta is or what my uterus is like..I may have to ask at our AS next week :)

Oopsie, I meant to say feeling them from the outside! You're totally right with being petite not making a difference from feeling the first flutters!
  • I still don't know if it's movement I am feeling or something else (gas, stretching, etc.) but I am hoping I will know for sure soon. As a FTM, it is VERY hard to tell. I was telling my MIL and she said "you'll know it when you feel it" which made me kind of frustrated because I thought it was well-known that it was hard to tell the first time! Ugh. She annoys me all the time though so this is just one more thing to add to the list lol (for example when I was telling her about my horrendous morning sickness and she responded by saying "wow, I wasn't sick at all with any of my 3 kids!" Not helpful...) I hope I feel whatever this is during the anatomy scan so I can see if it matches up with movements or not! I think once I can feel movement it will help this pregnancy feel much more real. It sounds like second pregnancies are way more fun - you get to show sooner and feel everything sooner. On the other hand, you have less time to enjoy it, so I guess it goes both ways! :p

  • My first I felt around 15 weeks very subtly, despite having an anterior placenta, and he really got going around 18-19 weeks. This baby has been moving like crazy and much stronger since about 16 weeks, though I felt little nudges around 12-13 weeks. I'm feeling full kicks, jabs, and rolls now at 19 weeks and I'm hoping beyond hope that means a healthy baby and a posterior placenta. We'll know tomorrow!
  • With DD I felt 3 very hard kicks or taps at 17w6d. It was 100% for sure the baby. Absolutely no doubt about it. There were no soft flutters or bubbly feelings. And after that it was several times a day every day for the rest of my pregnancy. This pregnancy is totally different. I was about 90% sure I felt a few baby flutters around 13 weeks and have felt a few since then. But there are days in between the flutters. I think I have felt a few soft taps this week and they have been every day the last few days. Tomorrow I will be 17w6d and still no kicks like I felt with the last one. It is making me annoyed. I am impatient for those kicks.

  • I've been feeling movement (taps mostly) since about 15w. This is baby #3. Today, 17w 5d I felt a stronger kick, so I put my hand where I felt it and I felt 3 more strong kicks from the outside! First feeling I have felt on both sides. Magical

  • At 19+2 and I still haven't really felt anything. With DD I felt her around 17 weeks strongly. What i thought was movement earlier this time I'm pretty sure was actually Braxton hicks. I think I have an anterior placenta though. I'll confirm at my AS on Monday. I think I got a solid kick this weekend but not so much as a tap since then. I'm actually pretty worried about it.

  • DH and I are in the middle of our mini babymoon and he just felt baby kick for the first time! I've been feeling movement since 17 weeks but now at almost 20 he definitely felt him/her.
  • I have been feeling kicks for the last week. I'm a FTM and 19.5wks. It's awesome. He moves around pretty regularly so it's nice to feel. I usually feel him in the morning and evening best and few times during the day. It makes you realize wow there's something alive growing in me! For me made it real.

  • Earlier this week I felt the first thing that felt like a definitive punch (or kick) - I think it was probably a punch because it was on the right side where my belly is slightly larger so I'm guessing that's where head is currently (however, FTM so I could be completely wrong).  That one felt like someone tapped on my stomach from the inside.  Then early this morning I felt like Nugget was doing something, but it felt more like flutters rather than taps.  Either way it's really exciting because that's the first ones I've felt!

  • @elgie - the "twitching" feeling is a really good description!

  • @elgie the "eye twitching" is exactly what I've been feeling. I love that description. Really felt it a lot last week but this week only a few times. But I didn't expect it would be regular for a few more weeks.
  • @elgie @hgrich I would also describe what I am feeling as twitching! I have never heard it described that way but it makes total sense to me now. I keep hearing it described as "fluttering" and I would definitely not describe what I am feeling as that. And it happens a lot more after I eat, so I am thinking it has to be baby movements. Hopefully I will know for sure soon!

  • I am 17w5d and still nothing and reading some of your posts, I am getting a bit worried...   I really wish I could feel it now...
Me:  35 year old FTM, a busy city banker living in London, and a constant worrier.
My DH:  French guy, car fanatic, best husband ever.
Our baby boy:  Due on 17 April, currently 37 weeks.  I can't believe it - I made it to full term!!!!
Last measurement:  3150 gs at 37+1!  This is going to be a big baby :)
  • I wouldn't worry @smallanimal - with my first I didn't feel any kicks until I was around 22 weeks and even now with my 5th I didn't feel anything I was certain was movement up until this week (and I'm 21 weeks on Monday).
  • @Smallanimal were due date buddies and i haven't felt anything!  and I'm still not showing.  getting discouraged and worried.
  • @smallanimal and @SDSwenson I'm due date buddies with both of you but I'm probably only feeling things because I'm hyper aware of my body. I feel it when I ovulate and can tell you what side it's on. I knew when this baby implanted because I felt that too. I think that's the only reason. And it really isn't regular. I felt it several times in week 16 but only a few times this week. Like they say, all women and all babies are different. Mine may just be super active and the timing is right where I'm relaxed and focused when she's active. And I may not have the same luck with my next pregnancy. So I wouldn't worry, y'all. I didn't expect to feel anything until at least 18 weeks anyway, so I consider myself merely lucky this time.
  • I have been feeling baby since about 16 weeks this time but it's here and there. Some days I feel him a lot some days I don't feel much at all. It depends on a lot, your uterus position, how the baby is positioned (in almost every ultrasound he starts off facing back and I don't really feel much when he's in that position) I really wouldn't worry about how much you're feeling at this point.. if you get to be 25 weeks and nothing.. I'd start asking questions. Hoping you ladies start feeling movements soon though as it truly is a great feeling!

  • I've been getting discouraged the last few days regarding movement. I've thought maybe I've felt the baby move but at the last two ultrasounds they told me the placenta is in the front so it will probably be a few weeks before I really feel anything. It has been hard when everyone is starting to ask if I feel the baby yet and I just say I'm not sure. I'm excited for the day when I am positive it is baby I feel and not just bubbles.

  • I felt some movements early around 14-15 weeks, STM and they were exactly what I felt with DD, then I haven't felt anything again since. We had our elective ultrasound and baby is fine, just in a position that i'm not feeling.

@smallanimal  and @SDSwenson I wouldn't worry at all if I were you. Dr's don't even have you start thinking about kick counting until the very end for a reason.

  • STM and finally felt a kick!

    2 week difference between #1 & #2!
  • I feel little thumps here and there but not physically 'with my hand on my belly' feeling movement if that makes any sense. I'm 19w2d with baby #3 and also not showing much. I definitely see baby moving during my ultrasounds so I'm not concerned.
  • STM and I have been feeling her move intermittently since 15ish weeks.  It's so subtle though and some days I don't feel her move at all
