Names?

Re: Names?

  •  We kept our son's name a secret from everyone except our parents (who weren't going to complain since he's named after both our dads) to avoid the whole "You're naming him what?!" conversation. His first name is Anthony, but it was not a name I had ever considered to name my child so it came out of left field for some family and friends. Even a couple of coworkers were taken aback. Oh well! They all shut up once we explained who he was named for.

Our problem during this pregnancy is that since Anthony has such a meaningful name, we're not sure which direction to go with her. We don't like either of our moms' names. I love names like Amelia, Natalie and Juliana, but he's said no to all those names. He likes the name Anna, which I'm not against but I'm not in love with it. So we're stuck! Hopefully we can get this figured out in the next 14-17 weeks!

  • @vgempis if our baby was going to be a girl, we wanted to kind of name her Anna (named after a best friend who passed away a year ago), but we agreed not to name the baby after someone we know, so we thought of Lilianna! Could always nickname her Anna? LOL but I adore Amelia, so pretty!

I think Penelope Eleanor has a really nice ring to it - why not use both? :)

  • @karaelaine1991 hmmm potentially :). I've been testing both out, I think the concept of picking a name is so freaking daunting!
  • @TinaBelcher I have an Elsie and everyone calls her "Els"  I recently started calling her "El" occasionally.
  • @karitubbs my nephew is Parker. If he was a girl, his name would have been Avery. How funny? I know a girl named Parker. I feel like the name has different connotations for both sexes. A girl named Parker seems playful/mischievous whereas a boy named Parker seems polished and preppy.

We are naming this girl Eliza and I plan to use El/Elle as a nickname. I don't want Ellie or Liza. We may end up calling her E-za because that's what my toddler says.
  • @underthesea Eliza is too cute. Not very common either! E-za is cute. My e calls the baby "baby Ollie" (olive)
  • @ThePax89 love hearing that you're already sticking to Ollie. We call ours Oli (Ollie/Olly--not sure on spelling yet) constantly! (For Oliver)
  • @ThePax89 thanks, we really love it. It's common enough everyone knows it but not over used. And it is from the same era as my daughter's name- Ada. I love Olive with the nickname Ollie! Super cute.
  • We are having such a hard time picking a name.  I mean I know I really have the rest of my pregnancy to figure it out, but still it'd be nice to have some real contenders!  We had been throwing around George for the longest time and then Henry, but then I realized SO many people are using Henry these days I kinda went back on that.  We have the middle name set- Howard (my husband and my dad's middle name) but beyond that we are trying NOT to use family names.  (Too much drama when SIL announced her baby's name and it was GOD FORBID after the FATHER'S family)

  • We're having another boy! We're sure on Sam, but not sure on what it's short for. I think H is trying to delay so I get rushed into accepting just Sam, but that's not happening. Also can't narrow down the middle name farther than 8 without a definite first name.
  • @newyearsbaby5 yay for little ollies/ollys
  • @underthesea I LOVE love the name Ada!  We were going to use that for DD2, but ended up going with Adeline.  We don't call her anything for short, as we aren't big fans of Addie.  We could have done Ada, especially if we spelled it Adaline, but DH thinks Adeline is just so pretty how it is
  • We are thinking of going with Mitzi (after a sweet, faithful woman in our church who also recently lost her husband), but we can't decide on a middle name.
    I also like Myra.
  • @lindsladle15 thank you! We love Ada too. It fits her so well. I also loved Adeline! And we debated between the two but I just wanted to all her Ada and didn't feel like it was a super natural nickname.
  • @lindsladle15 I LOVE Mitzi. So sweet.

Thanks @ThePax89!  I keep meaning to say that I like Olive!  It's been on my list for all three of our babies.
  • Ragnar.
Most people hate the name... go ahead and judge it.
My husband is Norwegian, and son will be too and our daughter has a strong viking name, and so will our boy.
I like the name! Do you watch the show Vikings? That is the name of the main chatacter.

So I'm super late to this thread, mainly because it took me forever to read through all of the posts!

You all have some great ideas!!

Im looking for some feedback/opinions. We are having twin girls. We have always had a girl name picked out (Charlotte-Charlie for short) but are struggling with the second name. We never thought we would have 2 girls, especially at once!

I like Olivia (Liv for short) but DH doesn't love it. He likes Alexandra (Alex or Lexi for short) I don't love Alexandra, but like the nick names.

We have middle names picked out, Susan and Jean, just not sure which will get which name.

Any feedback/suggestions? Naming humans is hard!!

DD1 is Olivia May and this little one will be Lucy Charlotte - sounds like you and I have a similar taste in names! With your middle names that you picked out, I really like Olivia Jean, but I don't think Charlotte Susan sounds quite right... Alexandra Susan and Charlotte Jean sounds better to me if you're set on those middle names.

ETA what about Charlotte Jean and Olivia Sue?

  • @jlinke926 do you like any of the variations for Alexandra better like Alexis or Lexia? Could still use the nicknames.
I like Charlotte Susan, Alexandra Jean, and Olivia Jean - but I think the middle names could go either way mostly. I agree with @karaelaine1991 that Sue is also a cute option if it works for you.
and as a personal preference I like charlotte and Olivia as a sib set, very cute- Charlie & Liv. But you know what, Charlie and Alex are also well suited as unisex nicknames.
  • I like your ideas @jlinke926. Lot's of options :) Have you thought of Samantha with a nickname of Sammy or Sam (if going for those gender neutral nicknames)?

  • @jlinke926 Charlie Jean is adorable
  • Thanks for the feedback/suggestions ladies! Hopefully we can compromise soon!!

  • I think Sampson Marvolo. His siblings are Dean Auditore and Alissandra Faye
  • Well DH and I agreed on Bear at 10 weeks pregnant but now he's changing his tune. He can't think of a middle name so baby is nameless again. :( there's literally no other name he liked except Cash (I said no).
  • @kaytastic25 Bear is cute- my DH has been pushing for a Fozzy Bear for well over a year. I agreed to 3rd son, so I couldn't be happier that we are having a girl and we don't want 4 kids. Have you thought of using a family name or even just an initial as the middle name for Bear?  A friend in high school had the middle initial P for her mothers maiden name. Or just continuing to use Bear as a nickname when you eventually agree on a name?

We are pretty much settled on Reagan Helen right now- though we have what can only be described as buyers remorse and start thinking of the names we didn't pick.  This is much harder than I thought it would be.

  • We have a son, Marlon who is 5.

If it is a boy : Karel (it is dutch & slovenian version of Charles/Carl/Karl)

If it is a girl : Paolina (it is the italian version of Pauline)

We love original names, but we don't want a weird name. One of my Icelandic friend who had a girl with a Swedish, has given Hekla as a second name.
I think it is awesome, cute, and so never heard in France! But it could also give many wordplay in French... so I gave up on Hekla as a first name, but I am definitly thinking about it as a 2nd name for a little girl.
  • So I think we have a name finally picked out - the problem? Her initials will be GOM, fine right? Until you get something monogrammed, then it turns into GMO! :(  I really like this name and the spellings we've chosen. Would it be silly to change the name just because of the monogram?

  • @TexasGal24 I think you're fine! You haven't spelled an inappropriate word, so I wouldn't worry about it. If you love the name, then go for it!
  • @TexasGal24 @LastMango I think you're both fine from an initials/monogram perspective. I'd only think twice if the initials spelled out something blatantly inappropriate or undesirable.
  • @Aureliana my husband's great grandmother is Tekla which we love. His sister already "called it" though.

Tekla is alsoa great name! Very rare, certaunly totally unknown in France. I have seen it few times on some nordic girl names lists.
  • So we had finally decided on Grayson Wilder for our son's name but my brother and 2 of my younger cousins are like o no, like Van Wilder? That's terrible. I honestly have never seen the movie and wouldn't even think to associate it with that but I don't know. I hate that I care what other people think.... any thoughts?
    BabyFetus Ticker
  • @BriannaE129129 Grayson Wilder sounds so cute together, I wouldn't listen to what other people think. I can only imagine the reactions we'd get if we told people the middle name Bear, so we are keeping it secret for the very reason. Don't let other people influence a perfectly great name!
  • @BriannaE129129 I actually love the movie Van Wilder! And would never have associated it with your name choice. I wouldn't worry about it :)
