Names?

Re: Names?

  • @juliebird6 I don't know many kids or people named Hazel but my cousin did name her daughter Hazel recently.

  • I know I've commented here before, but now that we know the sex, J and I are seriously considering our boy names now. I realllllly like Walker Lee, but I also reallllllllly like Christopher Lee. So, idk, we'll make a decision at some point.

I'm also in the "not sharing the name with family this early" camp, because my family/friends tends to be pretty forceful about the names they like or don't like. So, we'll share when we've decided for sure, but for now I'm being super  vague when asked. I already know that my mom will probably keep "suggesting"  names up until the due date, but she'll be fine. :D

  • @juliebird6 I love the name Hazel. Like PP have said I think it's becoming more common but if you like the name go for it. Another traditional name that we like for girls is Margaret. I'm just not sure Margaret goes with our middle or last name.

  • @Smiley-1980 DS is named Conor, so I'm partial to it.  I also like the way it sounds with David better.

  • @JulieBird6 I love love love Hazel. It is on our list. It was 63 on the 2015 Social Security list last year - 4,270 girls were named Hazel - which sounds like a lot but it was only 0.22% of total births in 2015.

@Smiley-1980 I am leaning toward Connor but I like both!

@colleenkevin I know Liam is popular but I LOVE it!

@LCartee2016 I hands down prefer Christopher over Walker. Walker is too surname for my taste.

@ceclarlinetlo Samuel Joseph is such a solid name. I really really love it. But you better believe that Cletus still has some use left in it.

My husband is so over talking about names with me... we have a list of about 15 and he's ready to start narrowing and I am still wanting to add!

  • @susykat77 Me too!!!  But my husband picked Derek and, as much as I hate to admit he is right, like @ceclarlinetlo said I think Derek Kevin flows better together.  Sigh.  This is hard.

    @juliebird6 I really like Hazel

  • DH and I don't discuss names with anyone IRL but I feel like this is different and it's so nice to be able to have it both ways! We won't know what the sex will be for a few more weeks but we both love the name Allison for a girl. DD1 is Marian Blythe. Blythe was my maternal grandmother's name, so we're thinking about Allison Margaret after DH maternal grandmother. Neither is still alive but I like using family names and it's special and meaningful to our moms

  • I think Hazel is gaining popularity and is trendy.

I like traditional names as well, but struggle with the issue of popularity.  Totally get it. I would say Hazel is pretty trendy though and would probably stay away if you're concerned about that.

  • ceclarlinetlo said I think Derek Kevin flows better together.
yeah if the choice was just Liam or Kevin I would totally pick Liam. I just think it flows better with the middle name Kevin.

@KAShock love that your DD is Marian! If Cletus had been a girl Marion (after my grandmother) would have been a non-negotiable name

  • Question for you all: for a boy, we are considering Zander or Xander, but aren't sure if we should name him Alexander and let Zander/Xander be the nn, or just go with the shortened version to begin with. Alexander is a family name, dh's grandfather. Opinions plz!
  • @lblq84 I usually lean towards the full name as the legal name to give him an option when he is older and might want a professional choice. I have a friend who calls their son Zander but his full name is Alexander

DH came up with the name Twyla  the other day and we both really liked it - (pronounced like "twilight" but with "a" at the end instead of "ight" if that makes sense") - final spelling is under negotiations. I like Kae for a middle name (pronounced like Kay) and he likes Katherine. My nephew's middle name is Jae after my dad whose middle name is J, and I thought Kae would be a nice accompaniment. I've told a couple of people our name idea, and they've had strange reactions. Twylla Kae. Twyla Katherine. Ultimately, I know it's our decision - and as a teacher I sometimes feel limited in choices by some of the students I've had (lol), but is there something I'm missing here?? Any thoughts??

ETA - my other, though minor, concern is that my name is Tawnya and some people seem to think I'm going for a version of a name similar to my own - which is totally not my goal. Apparently, also. Monster High character name??

I agree with @ceclarlinetlo that Alexander will give him a more professional option for later, which would be nice.  Just know that a lot of people will probably want to call him Alex as the nickname instead.  If you go with the shortened version, I'd spell it Xander to make the link to the family name more clear.

  • @LBLQ84 if we were having a boy, Zander would have been his name. In your case, I love the family connection of Alexander and using Zander/Xander for a nn. If you establish that as the name you will use, people should catch on and use it instead of Alex.
  • @ceclarlinetlo @underthesea @karaelaine1991 thanks ladies! Yes I think we will lean toward the full name Alexander with Xander as the nn early in life to avoid the Alex nn. I hadn't thought about the professionalism of the name as an adult, and I completely agree. Good to have the option at least. Now to see if it's actually a boy on Friday!  This discussion may be moot.
  • I'm officially lost on the name game. For 10+ years I've only ever looked at J names, now we're breaking away and doing something different and I'm completely overwhelmed! Are there any name sites that don't have the 25 ways to spell a name listed? It takes 1hr to scroll through the letter A...

Currently on our short list for a boy is the only name DH has said lol, Alexander, NN Alex

  • @mommywesley my favorite
name site is nameberry. You'll find the perfect name! 25 more letters on the alphabet to consider this time!
  • Now that we know we are having a girl, I've been thinking about names. The baby will have the same middle name as I do and one of the names that's come up that I like is Clara. My problem is, is this too similar to my name Carly, especially given that she will have the same middle name as me? My other top contenders are Margaret (nn Greta) and Hazel. I don't think my hubby was too big a fan of Hazel but we haven't talked much about it.

  • @Carly79  Hazel is a top contender in our house too!  Love Clara and Greta as well.
  • @Carly79 Would love your imput actually; our top girl name is Carly! But, not sure if we should spell it Carly or Carli. Middle name will be Jane.
  • We haven't fully decided or talked much about it. We are having a boy so the stress of deciding a name for both has been lifted. Right now all we have liked is Elijah ("Eli" for short) or Rylan. We Haven't even discussed middle names yet. the middle mame Jacob has been brought up after my husband's brother who passed away years ago...even before i knew my husband (we met in high school).
    Thoughts???
  • @lblq84 I really like my name. I had a friend in elementary school that spelled it Karly and my brother went to school with a Carlee. If it's somewhere I care I always spell it out but if I don't people usually get the Carl right and it's about 50/50 whether it ends up in y or i. I think the older generations that are familiar with Carly Simon tend to go with y but most others just guess. I work with a Carli and had a roommate in college that was Carly. I say go with what you like best :-) I love the middle name Jane.

This is my first name also. I vote Carly because that's how I spell it but truly no one ever spells it correctly anyway so it wouldn't make much of a difference if you went with an alternate spelling.
Baby Boy 3 is on the way!

Well, we found out it's a boy so the subject is now moot! Hahah thanks girls!! Save my Carly for another time I hope :smile:
  • We are going with Finn for our boy. We are set on calling him this but are now considering having it as a nickname. We are considering this because enough people have asked what it is short for that it just got us thinking. However we can only think of Phineas (which is a no go for us) or Finley which we think we might like (I find it a bit feminine though). Any thoughts or other full name suggestions?
Baby Boy 3 is on the way!
    Due 1/21/17
  • What about Griffin and then you can call him Finn? Or Finton?
  • @krissycole510 griffin is a great suggestion! I hadn't thought of having the Finn sound at the end. Thank you!

@canavara I think we might have a Henry too. We haven't said FOR SURE but that's kinda the top pick right now!
My son's middle name is Henry. It's a family name. I love simple but strong names like that.
