@AfKash yea.. :/ Carter's was having 50-60% off and then I had an email for an additional 25% off on top of that. So what you see is all of her NB and 0-3 mo. clothing that I plan to buy. It all came to $150
Don't feel bad!! That's awesome! I was just surprised because I never have that much stamina to do all that shopping at once. But of course, I'm the one who hates shopping for clothes.  Lol.

  • That's a ton of stuff for $150!!! I may have to hit up Carter's on the way home tonight!
  • @leslie1331 Do itttt! The little footed sleep and play PJ's came to $3.50 each after the discounts. Also, you don't need the email to get the additional 25% off. You can just go on their website and pull up the coupon to use in store from there

  • @srscott3 That picture is making me want to go! I already saw the Carter's sale email this morning but told myself no because I've bought a nice starter amount of gender neutral clothing. But since we found out it was a girl yesterday, I'm really itching to buy some girl specific clothes!!
  • @lfrank12 this is the first time I've bought clothes and I'm pretty sure this is all I'm buying as far as NB and 0-3 mo. stuff. I'll go do my 3-6 mo., 6-9 mo., and 9-12 mo. trip after my showers, since I know a lot of people got us little outfits in those sizes.

I also feel a little bad for buying so much NB stuff, but I figured I'll just leave the tags on and I had my receipt emailed to me, so if it's too small and I have to return anything within the next year, I can.
  • Really random question as I'm working on my registry...will we actually want one of the expensive diaper specific trash cans or the nursery or will any trash can work just fine?

You want it!!! It keeps the smell in and they can hold a million diapers. My husband said that's the one thing he'd get for new parents at a baby shower.
  • We chose a fancy diaper one that takes regular trash bags for our registry. I think it's called Ubbi.

@lfrank12 that's a really good question! I need help with this one, too.
So, my sister said she just used a regular trash can with a lid and just made sure to take the trash out everyday. She said she didn't want to get a Genie because the bags get expensive.
So I looked at the Ubbi, but the reviews on that were horrible because the latch easily comes off.
After that, I asked my cousin what she uses and she said the Genie and that she buys generic bags from Target.  She says she loves it but did mention that once her son started real food, it did get stinkier.
I'm just all sorts of confused.
I have a very strong sense of smell so I definitely want something.

  • My sister has an Ubbi for my nephew and loves it!

  • I never had a diaper trash can for either kid. I just bought those little baggies for each diaper. They carried some at dollar tree for like 50 or 70 in a bag for $1. Tossed in the bag. Tied up. Tossed in little trash can. Took out when full. Worked for us personally.

  • @srscott3 that's more clothes than my son has owned his almost 3 years.
  • @srscott3 and anyone else: does Carters have a good selection of Team Green things? I have 2 newborn gowns and thats it so far. Thanks for the heads up on the sale and coupon!

I.....I may have to go and check it out today. You know....to "just browse"

  • @yogadevil there's a small section in stores, and then you can find some sleep and plays in both the girls and boys sections that can be used as team green stuff. Compared to my local store, I think there's more team green stuff online.
So I would say go look in store, but what you can, and then order the rest online :)
  • @yogadevil Everything gender neutral I bought has been from carters! I found a lot of sleepers in the boys section that were very gender neutral
  • @srscott3 and @lfrank12 thanks! I ended up with a bag full of gray, yellow, and green lol. That gets so old buying those colors!
  • @yogadevil you may like the website primary.com for team green stuff. Not as cheap as Carter's but everything I ordered has been really high quality.

On the subject of clothes, I'm curious about something. For those of you who had 8-9 lb babies, how long were you in newborn sizes? Not at all? Just a couple of weeks?

@Xstatic3333 I had two 8 lb babies. They both were in newborn for 2 weeks solidly then I squeezed them in for a 3rd week. Lol.

  • @Xstatic3333 Mine was 8 lbs even, over 9 by her two week appointment. I think we had very little NB stuff. Maybe a few weeks or a month she was able to be in them?
  • Do you think it is even necessary to have newborn sized stuff or can they fit directly into 0-3 months instead?

It'll depend on the size of your baby for sure. If yours is tiny they might be swimming in the bigger stuff in the beginning.
  • I was planning to have 3-4 nb cute outfits, and then some of the cheap gerber onesies in nb just in case. I suspect we'll have a larger kid, but will buy more nb stuff online/send dh to target if the kiddo is smaller. May have the ol' Carter and amazon accounts/carts cued up and ready to purchase in those final weeks.
  • Thanks guys! My plan is the same as yours, @Patience7150. I won't buy much in NB, but will send H on a Target run if we're surprised by a little guy.
  • DS was 8lb8oz and wore zero NB clothes ever and started in size 1 diapers.
  • @PerraSucia (and any other STMs), when ya'll had that last US before baby was born and they gave you a guess as to how much he/she weighed, how accurate was that to baby's birthweight? If it's accurate, I was thinking of waiting until that appointment to decide how much NB stuff I plan to take tags off of and wash

They told me my DS would be around 6lbs and he was 7 lbs 14 oz. I think overall I have heard they are not super accurate but I could be wrong. I had several ultrasounds for sizing due to gestational diabetes.

  • @srscott3 I'm guessing you already know you're having another ultrasound? The A/S will have been my last ultrasound unless I have some sort of medical reason for one.

I've also heard that they can be really off as far as predicting the actual weight.
  • I've read that the weight predictions are often very far off, and you can't pay them a lot of heed. My big baby assumption is based on family history and my personal size (I was born 22 inches long, which is apparently crazy, and have stayed tall), but I know that these things vary and I could easily end up with a 6 pounder. I just want to hedge my bets against wasting a lot of money on super tiny clothes. He was measuring on the bigger side at the A/S so I have no reason so far to doubt my suspicions.
  • @Xstatic3333 I think longer babies have to move up in size faster imo. Like even though my kids gained weight fast and were born at 8lbs I could still fit them in newborn, but it was because they were short little nuggets.

Those last last ultrasounds can be very off in weight. Sometimes up to 2 lbs. It just depends on your kid. I found the best predictor was my midwife feeling my belly and giving me a guess on size.

  • The guidance I've heard is that the ultrasound estimates they give you on baby's size is +/- 2 lbs, which is huge when you're generally looking in the 6-10 lb range. The estimates I was given for both of my babies was very accurate especially when you factor in that the estimate isn't done the day they're born (both kids were within a couple of oz of the estimate). A friend of mine at work was induced because the estimate was that her baby was about 9 lbs, but when they finally got the induction to take (on the 3rd day) the baby was just over 7 lbs). My kids were 8lbs 1 oz and 7lbs 11 oz and both wore newborn's for about 3 months. My cousin's baby was about 9.5 lbs and some of the newborn stuff never fit while some others did. SIL's baby was just under 7 lbs and needed preemie sizes for a bit. I typically choose a newborn outfit and a 0-3 outfit to take to the hospital for coming home day so that I'm covered either way. Also, I found that the Gerber onsies fit one size small compared to Carter's (i.e. Gerber 0-3 fit like Carter NB).

  • @srscott3 they calculate the babies weight based on an algorithm from 3 things, that I believe are the length of the femur, head measurements, and stomach measurements. It can be altered based on genetics though... babies with bigger heads, taller/longer kids, or if they're short and stout, etc. I'd say to just get a package of maybe 5 NB onesies and then the rest 0-3+. If you end up needing more NB clothes, you can always send someone out to get them or hop on Amazon. And who knows what will happen closer to the due date--you may be two weeks early or may be two weeks late! I just wouldn't stock up on them and you'll likely end up with some from the baby shower too.

  • Thank you all!! From this advice, I've already bought way too much NB stuff. But thankfully it was all from carter's and I have a year to return it. I'm just going to leave all the tags on, and if they're too small when she's born, I'll send my husband to return them.
  • With my first they predicted he was over 9lbs and he was close to 10 so pretty accurate. With my second they predicted 8lbs and that's exactly what she was so even more accurate. That being said, I had a friend who was also told her baby was probably around 9lbs and he ended up being 6lbs. So you just really never know I guess.

Neither of mine wore any newborn stuff, but they were also on the taller side. DS was just shy of 23 inches and DD was 21 1/2. Plus ours is a large head family so no newborn stuff was used for clothes. I really wanted DS to wear his newborn outfit home, but that just wasn't happening lol so he went home in his 0-3 month outfit.

I agree with @silvercamaro77, that gerber onsies are so tiny and run much smaller than brands like carters.
  • On the day DS was born they did an US (to see if my placenta previa had cleared) and the estimate was 5lbs 3oz and he came out 5lbs even.

I have no sciencey reason for that being so accurate but I have a based-on-zero-science theory.  Both my husband and I are very average builds, so my guess is that since we probably fall into that 50% average range, whatever calculations they do to guess baby weight matched up.
