So I woke up this morning to find out my outside dog had gotten off the yard line sometime during the night because her collar broke. My H had just gotten home from work so we were walking around yelling her name. I went to the back yard and she came bolting out of the woods behind our house. I'm really glad she was close but I wish I knew how long she'd been loose. Scary way to start this Friday morning.
I won't be getting the flu shot and my doctors have all been fine with it, my uncle got Gullien Barre after a flu shot and over 6 years later he still has awful effects from it, like some days he can't walk at all. My doctors have all said it's not worth the risk with that being in our family history. I get T a flu shot because I know how dangerous the flu and is in young children this will be her last year though I think.
As a health care worker I do not and will not be getting the flu shot pregnant or not. I am not anti vax and definitely believe in most of the childhood vaccines. I do not trust vaccines that they tinker with and guess on annually. I also would not get a new vaccine unless the benefits outweigh the risks. For example, Guardasil and the varicella vaccine are no goes for at least 10 more years in my personal opinion. I want more data on long term effects. But if I had to go to Libya and there was an ebola vaccine I'd probably get it.
Regarding mrsa, about 1/3 of people are carriers...bacteria is on us and we can't choose which kind colonizes our skin. Only becomes a problem in an immunocompromused situation which is why you are in isolation in the hospital even if you are healthy, that nurse can't risk spreading it to a different patient. In everyday life mrsa is NBD.
As a healthcare worker who has seen many people die from the flu I am extremely saddened by your reactions. You need to do more research on pregnancy and flu infections. As someone who has seen pregnant ladies on ventilators in the ICU delivering prematurely I would never take the risk. As a Ped, it is horrifying to walk through a PICU and see previously healthy children on ECMO due to influenza. Yes I am biased because I trained at a large tertiary children's center that got referred the worst cases, but it happens! At the very least I am glad you have no patient contact because your attitude about protecting patients from the flu is very off putting. And please do more research on complications of varicella and Gardasil(that's how it is spelled) before thinking that avoiding the vaccines are no big deal.
@scottipino exactly this. I am not in or anywhere near the healthcare field but I have done quite an extensive amount of research and the response from @mmg410625 caught me off guard. I would love to see sources, case studies, etc to support mmg's opinion on the matter but until then I'm going to guess (and hope!) that most healthcare workers do not feel the same way. Sure the flu vaccine is not going to be 100% accurate in predicting the most prominent strains. But an ounce of prevention is still worth a pound of cure in my book!
Friendly reminder that "healthcare worker" can cover a range of education and training from 6 month community college course in medical billing coding up to 10 years+ of rigorous medical training and research methodology. @MrsLittleMac, while it's definitely possible that many "healthcare workers" may hold the same opinions as those outlined above, it doesn't necessarily mean they're being based on any kind of research or evidence-based investigation.
@poetryandoceans good point! I hadn't quite rubbed the sleep out of my eyes before I got on this morning, I didn't approach it from that angle at all. I (wrongly, usually) assume everyone has sources and evidence supporting controversial opinions, especially when they claim it's related to their field. Mea culpa.

+1 on this, I am a "healthcare professional", but my job is to manage the accounts receivable for an orthodontic practice, so as much as my healthcare credentials might make it seem like I should be well versed in healthcare issues, in all actuality I stare at numbers all day and my job has 0 to do with the health and well being of anyone.
@Gretchypoo I was going to suggest a robins egg blue or red. I think a bright yellow would love nice too. The blue might be offsetting next to your neighbors house but I have seen it next to brick color and it looks beautiful.
Mine was a red squirrel. Could have been better , could have been worse. What are the chances the algorithm spits out a random animal for everyone despite the questions.

Uh oh. My grandpa used to say "A red squirrel is no good!" It was one of his common sayings. He was very serious too!
I've mentioned it before, but I work in a small office. It's just my boss, my co-worker, and me. Boss is "quasi-retired" and only stops in for about an hour a day and doesn't actually do anything. So really, it's just me and my coworker.
Well, coworker took a 2 1/2 week vacation....I've still got one more week left before she gets back and I don't think I'm going to make it . I'm so tired. Someone hold me.
I knew people would get their backs up about this and wanted to share my opinion, since I know it is not the majority. I clearly stated it was my opinion. Getting a flu shot is a personal choice and I am very aware of my actions while unvaccinated and take every precaution possible while in the hospital even though I don't have patient contact. Oh and I am educated, 8 years, though that should make no difference. Vaccination rates are about 50% for Healthcare workers here, just fyi. Never assume everyone is vaccinated and be sure to use your hand sanitizer and don't touch your face in public places! Again guys, my opinion... you can have yours...I can have mine! I didn't come down on those that said they were drinking in pregnancy, even though there is research that shows effects of that, and im sure a few of you smoke even though you know it's bad for you and everyone around you... so ya... ok rant done! I don't usually pipe up in here because I know of the backlash, but I took the risk this time!

Here we go.
ETA Even if you take precautions with no patient interaction, do you still have interactions with doctors? Who then interact with their patients?
It's actually very easy to figure out who hasn't had a flu shot in our institution once we are under restrictions. If you have any patient contact and don't have a flu shot you have to wear a mask at all times. And it isn't just a personal choice if you work with at risk people- you are putting others at risk. You are absolutely right you can have an opinion but that doesn't mean we can't argue with you. Plus when you advertise yourself as a healthcare worker you imply certain knowledge, but as pointed out before that knowledge can be vastly different depending on your education level.
