Names?

Re: Names?

  • @tinabelcher LOVE LOVE LOVE your names! I'm sure your baby will be honoured to be named after RBG. I'd imagine for Ellis the nicknames might evolve as she gets older until she picks one she likes (or just goes with Ellis). I have a few friends who abandoned their nicknames once they got to college.

Im planning on giving my baby two middle names for the same reason as you. It's going to be a mouthful but I want all my kids to have my last name (which I've kept) as one of their middle names. I think it's fine/ a great idea though others may disagree. I just really want my baby to have Cecile (which was my mom's middle name) + my last name as her middle names. I have friends who have absurdly long family names and its never caused them trouble!

  • It's looking more and more like our names are about set- we've been tossing around Maren Ruth (for mah lady RBG) and Ellis Lydia (for Lydia Deetz ha) for a bit and nothing else is coming up

I'm still struggling with Ellis because I don't like the nicknames, I know roughly 63267954 Ellie's and Ella's and really hope her full name or just Ell will stick... But H LOVES it and I feel like a veto will not be taken well... And Maren, Ruth and Lydia are all my picks....

ETA is it weird to name one after a Supreme Court Justice and the other after a movie character? :D Also what do you guys think about 2 middle names? My maiden name dies with me and my baby sister, but is that too much?
I have a college acquaintance that goes by Elle, and I believe her given name is Ellis. I think if you just start right off the bat with that as a nickname, that's what will stick.

I love both of your names... they are so fun!

  • @TinaBelcher you're totally making me jealous with Ellis! :)

  • @TinaBelcher We're doing two middle names. If he thinks it's too much when he's older, he can go by the initials. His first name was my father's name so DH is doing both his grandfather's names as his middle names. It means a lot to him so I'm okay with it.

Besides my little cousin has 5 middle names. Yes. FIVE. I come from a big Italian family and my cousin (his father) didn't want to offend any of the uncles. Also you picked badass middle names so I say go with it!
  • @TinaBelcher I've got a few friends and cousins that have given their kids 2 middle names.  It would be an awesome way to keep your name going too.  I think Ell would stick just fine, especially after Stranger Things.
  • @emy730 I know many people who go by their middle names, including my FIL. He either goes by the shortened version of his mn or by his first 2 initials. He was named after his father, so I think this was partially to prevent confusion and partially because his first name is honestly kind of awful and definitely doesn't suit him at all.

If this baby is a boy we are considering giving him the same mn as my FIL and potentially calling him that as well.

Now that I think about this, it seems like most of the middle namers I know are guys, and I do agree with PP that this might be more of a pain for a woman, i.e., when she gets married.
  • @themuffinman16 @emy730 FWIW, "antique" names are making a comeback recently. Though my mom and I refer to them as "old people names," haha! Good luck :)

  • @TinaBelcher I absolutely love Maren Ruth. It is just perfect. Honestly, I am not a fan of Ellis... it sounds very masculine/surname-y to me but I understand not wanting to veto your husband... What about Lydia Ellis?

My husband tossed a few names at me, today. Herman, Herbert, or Albert. I'm just trying to figure out why he hates our child.
My husband suggested Albert as well. And then Roger and Stanley. I feel your pain!
My husband keeps bringing up Lester Raymond.  Thank goodness it's a girl.

The surname/ somewhat masculine/ gender neutral aspect is the part keeping me from vetoing lol! I dislike the girly nickname options, but I can call her whatever I want in the end right?  :# Maren has been my top name primarily because it's not overly feminine

I have a question about people going by their middle names. My maiden name is Henry, and I really love it as a boy's name, but H thinks it's way too popular (which it is for sure). We also have two friends with little boys named Henry.

We are heavily leaning toward the name Charles (nn Charlie), but I don't like the flow of Charles Henry. I do, however, love how Henry Charles sounds.

I know a few people who strictly go by their middle names, and always have, but I'm not sure if that's weird. I am definitely over thinking this, I know, but naming kids is hard.

Anyone here go by their middle name?
I didn't but my cousin did and when she got married and her first name was on everything I was SO confused. My whole life I never knew that she was going by her middle name! So, it can be done!

  • @Emy730 Here's my experience with someone going by their middle name. My BIL's name is Marcus Shane. Growing up he always went by Shane. He was Shane when my sister met him and when we all met him. When he started looking for some different jobs he wanted to go by the name Marcus. He thought it was more professional and liked the meaning behind it. He has tried very hard for people to call him Marcus. My sister has done a pretty good job of getting on board and all of their new friends call him Marcus but my family struggles with it. It gets confusing at times and we really have to think about it. That's my only experience with it, I think it's fine so long as the child doesn't decide to switch it up as an adult (and even then it's just something people have to deal with if it happens).

  • Hey everyone, I've been lurking for weeks now and haven't introduced myself properly (Hi, I'm Jenn) but we just found out we're having a boy. Hubby and I were both very close to our grandfathers so we've already decided to use both names, but my dilemma is which way around.

    John Warren or Warren John?

personally, I'm of the opinion that since they automatically get Hubby's last name that I should get dibs on the first name :)

  • Hi, @Kittievr4 and welcome!
I personally like Warren John better.
  • Ragnar.
Most people hate the name... go ahead and judge it.
My husband is Norwegian, and son will be too and our daughter has a strong viking name, and so will our boy.
Makes me think of the long distance relay races across the county, but I like it!

Yes! I'm in to it. And want to participate in one of the races someday!  :#

Ditto! Although John Warren would let him quite "my name's not fuckin Warren!" Lololol but that movie probably won't be big with this generation soooooo Warren's great!

@lindsladle15 thank you! and hmm, Warren is Hubby's grandfather so we'd be creating a complete namesake lol

@TinaBelcher also thanks for the input! I gotta go watch that now :)

  • @karitubbs I really like Parker for a girl. If DH hadn't vetoed it, it would be on my short list. I don't think she'll be confused for a boy on paper, it's more 50/50 these days.

My DD is Kendall so you can tell I'm a fan of unisex names as well :)

Uh... I have never heard of a girl named Tristan. Did she mishear it as Kristen? Either way - I'm glad you shut that nonsense down!

  • @karitubbs I think Parker is a nice name, one that is unique and not too common. However, I do keep thinking Peter Parker from Spiderman

@raquel87 @ceclarlinetlo I have never heard of a girl being named Tristan either!

My husband and I aren't really giving out the name til after birth. When I was 3 weeks pregnant, we told only our parents. Of course, the MIL announced it to our ENTIRE family and friends. Even though we asked not to say anything, I got ppl congratulating me which is nice, but we would like to have announced it ourselves. Then we had a month long miscarriage scare right afterwards. Think I would have been the one who would have had to announce that.

Then the same thing happened with the gender reveal lol. So we are not sharing the name with anyone in the family til it is on the birth certificate.

I kind of like keeping it to ourselves. That way, when we do end up being 100% sure on the name, I don't have to worry about someone in the family saying they dont like it. And I do keep getting recommendations every. single. day. about boy names. How about Aiden? How's Brent feeling today? Did you feel Albert kick yet? Is Raymond hungry? OK I get it, you want to help and you like those names, but if you want to name a baby, have one yourself!! LOL sorry!

However, I would appreciate some type of opinion! DH and I have so far agreed on Viktor James. I am Polish so I would like my grandparents to be able to pronounce his name. In Polish, it is spelled Wiktor. There's also Erik James, but I fear Erik is kind of too common. I also like Damian, but my H affiliates it with the Damien movie. I affiliate it with Damian Wayne, Batman's son, we are total comic book nerds, but I am losing that fight  :/

    Sorry I type forever.

  • @AlicjaB I totally get keeping the name a secret! We did that with DD (name and gender) and I have no regrets in doing so. This time around, we've revealed gender but not name.

FWIW I adore the name Viktor! I think that would be a great choice!  I actually wanted to name our boy to be Erik after my great-grandfather but it REALLY does not go with my married last name. (think Peter Peterson)

  • @ceclarlinetlo Neither have I! My mom definitely heard Tristan, she is just incredibly insensitive! Last pregnancy I mentioned I liked the name Mason and she freaked out as well. Not as bad as this time, she has no filter. She did text me later to apologies, not that it really matter at that time.
  • @AlicjaB - we were thinking about polish names too (DH is 1/4 Polish) and almost went with Lucas (Lucasz) but as much as I loved the name it didn't feel right so maybe it's for our (hopefully) next baby.

  • I really like Viktor James. And we also don't share name until after birth of baby. That was the plan last time but we didn't have a name when we went to the hospital so it didn't really matter. We need to start having the discussions but doubt we will make a final decision before we see baby, it worked out pretty well last time.

  • My mom and I might have finally agreed on a first name, Penelope. Although I really like it it doesn't have the same feel Eleanor does to me. I'm just trying to figure it out, hardest decision in life thus far!
  • @Sherrera92 I like the name Penelope but also like the name Eleanor. I have been out of pocket quite a bit this week and trying to catch up so if I missed this, I apologize. What's wrong with the name Eleanor?
