We are a "J" family too. We had discussed going away from it, but just couldn't since the 3 of us are already all "Js". Jude is the only boy "J" name we both liked, so we're having a Jude too.

As of right now, we've decided on our boy's name! I've tried it out with my close friends and they like it. But I won't be announcing it publicly, or on here yet, sorry! It is very unique, but works for us. He will have 2 middle names. I feel pretty good about it right now, and my hubby loves it. So that's great!

We find out on Wednesday whether baby #2 is a boy or a girl, and I am so ready to start figuring out a name. H all but refuses to discuss it with me until we know the sex.

We've finally settled on a name... Oliver Bear... he'll be our little Oli Bear (we'll call him Oli for short). We totally joked about using the name Bear for so long and then realized we can do whatever we want. If he's embarrassed by it or wants to run for president, he can just use the middle initial B.

Thank you, @BriannaE129129!! We're a little scared to ultimately tell our family and friends the middle name for their reactions, but we're out of the box people when it comes to environmental things (solar panels on our roof, bike everywhere, grow our own veggies, etc.) so an animal middle name seemed fitting... so hopefully they won't be too shocked! Either way, we're excited

So I have a bit of weird story... My mom's best friend's daughter and I are 17 days apart, we ended up getting married 17 days apart, we are now due 17 days apart and both with boys! So crazy!

Today I went on Facebook (she is an avid FB poster) and she announced her baby's name on facebook and guess what?? it's the SAME as ours, Grayson. I feel like I should have expected it but now I feel a little sad that we are going to have kids with the same name. She's due in December so she'll be announcing before me and I don't want people to think i took her name! I also haven't posted anything about my pregnancy on FB and don't plan to any time soon.... What do you ladies think? Am I thinking too much into it, is it the pregnancy hormones??

@BriannaE129129 while I am always irritated by "name stealing" it sounds like you aren't actually friends with this girl, you just have a common history. So I'd name your baby whatever you want and not worry about her baby having the same name. Grayson is pretty popular right now, at least in my circles, so I wouldn't think twice if I saw two babies born close together with the name.

Now that we know baby is a girl we are strrruuggglinggg. I always thought I'd name a girl Lydia but now that I'm actually in the process I've changed my mind. My top choice is Layla and DH's is Tabitha. I think we're going to sttrugggleee to agree.

Does anyone know of any cute nicknames for the name Harper? It is one of our top girl names right now, but I don't know of any nicknames. Middle name will be Marie. It is a family name on both sides.

I like the name Harper. Not sure of any nicknames but also not sure you need one. My name is Carly and growing up I never had any true nicknames, I have always been Carly. I did have a few people in my life that made up their own nickname for me but they were specific to those people and not things people in general called me.

I feel that you should name your baby the name you want. If I were in your situation, I'd take the situation by the horns, shoot her a quick message saying, "Oh, wow, I can't believe we picked the same name! How funny!" And then move on. How she chooses to proceed is up to her, but you know that you picked that name before you found out her name choice, and I don't see any reason for you to change it!

We have a 2 year old daughter named Amari Lily and I would like to name our second daughter Sunny Daisy. My husband isn't 100% on board yet, but I love it. Do you think that's too hippie?

For my taste, yes, but I gravitate towards more traditional/conventional names. What matters is that you and your husband both love the name. That being said, do keep in mind that your daughter's name will be her name forever. Many parents who like less traditional names choose to balance them with one that can be used for more professional situations just in case that's the child's preference in the future. Again, if you both love the name, go for it, but that's just something you might want to think about.

I adore the name Daisy! Is there a different first name you'd consider where you could use Sunny as a nickname? It's actually adorable, but my preference would be to have it be a nickname with so she'll have an option for a more serious name down the line.

@ginabdove - my grandma is named Sonia but she's gone by Sunny literally her whole life and hates the name Sonia. She worked 35 years as a kindergarten teacher so it kind of worked with her profession!

@mrsrahl eh it doesn't bother me. I always wanted a song with my name in it so the baby would have that gift from birth.

We found that we're having a boy, and I am stuck on the name Charles (nn Charlie). I would always call him Charlie, so does it make sense to just name that instead of the long name?

I love the name Charlie! Before we settled on Samuel, Charlie was my top name but DH wouldn't agree to just let his actual name be Charlie and not Charles - well I don't like Charles, so I gave up.

Charlie was one of our top boy names. We wouldn't have used Charles and gone just with Charlie. I don't think it's a problem at all.

I think it's nice to give him the option for something more formal as an adult, even if you always use the nickname.

I have a question about people going by their middle names. My maiden name is Henry, and I really love it as a boy's name, but H thinks it's way too popular (which it is for sure). We also have two friends with little boys named Henry.

We are heavily leaning toward the name Charles (nn Charlie), but I don't like the flow of Charles Henry. I do, however, love how Henry Charles sounds.

I know a few people who strictly go by their middle names, and always have, but I'm not sure if that's weird. I am definitely over thinking this, I know, but naming kids is hard.

Anyone here go by their middle name?

Fwiw, I think those two names flow well either way

I had been WAY behind in this thread and I have just caught up in the last couple days. I love all the thoughtfulness and meaning everyone is putting into their name choices!

@emy730 I have a LOT of experience with this topic. As a middle namer myself, I would adamantly suggest people NOT call your children by their middle names, especially if it is a girl. Not only is it a pain while growing up and in everyday life (i.e. correcting teachers at school, doctors, employers) but it becomes even more so when/if said daughter gets married. When I got married, I made the decision to drop my first name because I never used it. I then found out the hard way just how difficult that would be.

My husband is a middle namer, and aside from the day to day (which is annoying) he doesn't seem to mind it, but has stated that he would never want to do that to a potential son.

All that to say, it's not so bad for a boy but to anyone else reading, don't do it to your girls.

Side note: I think Charles Henry sounds just fine, as does Henry Charles

@emy730 my brother goes by his middle name. It has never been an issue. At school on the first day he would tell the teachers he goes by his middle name and that was the end of it. It is nice for him because now as an older adults he is starting to go by his legal first name. He likes having the option.

I don't, but FWIW I went to high school with a family that all went by their middle names. I don't know if any of them minded but I do remember that at the beginning of the school year and when we had a new substitute teacher they always had to tell the teacher that they went by their middle name. I'd imagine this could get annoying, but at least it was usually a one time occurrence. I think that their parents' thought process was to give them a traditional name for their first name (i.e. Robert) and a trendier name for their middle name (i.e. Kyle). None of the kids' middle names were unprofessional by any means, but I did notice that their middle names were always newer/trendier and the first name was always more classic. Sorry I don't have any first hand experience!

@emy730 One of my best friends is a middle namer and she absolutely hates it. She actually has looked into legally changing it multiple times. She is constantly correcting people (school, work, banks, doctor's offices) and it drives her crazy. She hasn't changed it though because the cost is too much for her. She's a teacher and she would have to update all her certifications. I know it's only one person's experience, but I definitely feel for her.

Either way both names sound nice to me! I love traditional boys names.

@emy730 My first name doesn't nickname well (Heather) but my middle name does (Briana) and I grew up being called "Bree" by aunts, uncles, and cousins. I like that it's something unique within my family.

It's looking more and more like our names are about set- we've been tossing around Maren Ruth (for mah lady RBG) and Ellis Lydia (for Lydia Deetz ha) for a bit and nothing else is coming up

I'm still struggling with Ellis because I don't like the nicknames, I know roughly 63267954 Ellie's and Ella's and really hope her full name or just Ell will stick... But H LOVES it and I feel like a veto will not be taken well... And Maren, Ruth and Lydia are all my picks....

ETA is it weird to name one after a Supreme Court Justice and the other after a movie character?

Also what do you guys think about 2 middle names? My maiden name dies with me and my baby sister, but is that too much?

Grayson Wilder will be his name, I love it! I've always been a fan of more unique middle names and this is perfect. Not too long after the great Gene Wilder passed, maybe it was a sign!

@emy730 naming a kid is hard! So many things to think about.

I don't go by my middle name but I know a few people that have always gone by their middles name. My old neighbor was named Debra after her mother, but having 2 Debbies in the same house wasn't ideal so the family always called her Chris (her middle name is Christine). In school and at work she has gone by Debbie but on Facebook she's Christine. Seems she picks and chooses when to use her first name.

The other person I know is a former co-worker. She is dominican and it is common to give multiple people in the same family the same name, so both her and her sister where named Mary. She goes by her middle name Romona, and her sister goes by Mary. She had some issues with student loans because of the double name once though. I believe her license is issued to M. Ramona, but I'm not 100% positive about that.

I like Charles Henry, it sounds very regal to me. If a complete strangers option means anything at all. Good luck.

@BriannaE129129 I love it! Wilder was a name I was throwing around for a boy's middle name, but girl.

@TinaBelcher we are thinking of two middle names for this baby. I took my maiden name as a second middle when I got married. It's special to me. I decided to not give my girls my maiden name as a second middle but I think it's a great idea to keep a name alive.
