Re: Newborn/Postpartum Thread

  • @Caseymw118 Sounds about like how my guy was around 4-5 weeks. As for the gas issue, it could be related to diet or other things, but for me it was a foremilk/hindmilk issue. If you only feed for a short time on one side and then switch, or if you have an oversupply like I do and they can't empty one side in a feeding, then they don't get the fatty hindmilk that sets well in their stomach. I'm working on that right now too, my LC was saying that getting too much foremilk was a common cause of excess gas. So maybe look into that if you think it might be what you're dealing with?

  • @winnie1122 my LO has a lot of gas too, and I'm worried it's because of too much foremilk--did your LC have any good suggestions for getting LO to feed longer on one side? just be persistent?

@betheliz She's just having me do one side per feeding, not switching at all unless the baby empties the first breast and is still hungry, and just pumping a little on the opposite  side each time to keep it comfortable until the next feeding. My problem is that I have too much milk right now so he's not been able to empty one side completely so we're working to get my supply to meet his demand. If your breast(s) gets emptied, your LO should be getting hindmilk! If you're not sure what they're getting, you can pump a bottle and let it sit awhile and the fatty milk will separate to the top if it's there!

Eta: not sure if I answered your question completely, I haven't had any issues with LO staying on one side so we didn't talk about that, but I think as long as they're still getting milk from one side they'll be content to stay there. The main goal is to not force them to switch sides too early or they may not get the hindmilk. My pediatrician told me specifically to do 10 min on each side and it totally screwed us all up. My LC said that is outdated advice and they don't recommend timing it out like that since everyone produces differently.

  • Anyone have a baby that suddenly just won't sleep??? She can go 5 hour stretches now! It is exhausting.
  • @shaylalr Mine stays up for some serious long stretches during the day!! I'm chalking it up to a growth spurt!

This started for me yesterday! He only slept for an hour during the day!! Fell asleep around 9:30 and didn't wake up to feed until 2 am. So here we are.
  • Mine has been awake quite a lot the past couple of days during the daytime and sleeping the same as usual at night. I think it's catching up to her, too. Hopefully it's just a phase and she adjusts.
  • @shaylalr yes! I've found in my case this is due to gas or intestinal Pain. If baby is calm and wide awake could just be adjusting to a new sleep schedule to sleep more at night hopefully. I've found if she won't sleep/lay in certain positions but is calm and can lay comfortably in others it's usually gas.

bicycling the legs and some tummy massage have been huge help with this if that is the problem

  • I find it really hard to bicycle DD's legs. She is really strong and sometimes sticks them straight out especially when she is gassy or upset. How do you do tummy massage? Just rub it?

i find it so hard to read her crying cues...I have no idea what they all mean. DH is awesome at it and knows when she's hungry vs attention seeking or other.

  • For massaging the belly, you make clockwise circles. I read, "Infant Massagewith DD. It has history on why massage is important, plus it has great pictures and descriptions on how to do it. I recommend it! My library had it.

  • I used the "I love you" massage technique a lot with DS it worked great.

  • Oh yes yesterday was such an exhausting day my LO slept well the previous night then yesterday from about noon and on she would not sleep for more than 30 minutes. She just wanted to eat every hour, she was attached to me all afternoon. I finally got her to sleep at 10 and didn't wake up until 4 AM . I guess she tired herself out poor baby. The thing I noticed is that she wants to be sucking all the time She wakes up looking for something to suck I give her the pacifier but I don't want her to get so used to it but that's the only way she falls right back to sleep. I'll see how today goes.
  • @sboston06 we've been using this link for decoding baby cries and it seems to have worked for the most part

  • @shaylalr For the past 4 or 5 days, DS has started to be awake more in the evenings (and fussy) but we still have the same bedtime routine for him. No trouble getting him to fall asleep at bedtime, so unfortunately I will take a super awake baby in the evening if he sleeps ok at night. He will usually wake up around 4 or 5pm (I think he senses when I'm trying to cook dinner) and he may stay up until 9:30 or 10, with maybe one or two 15 minute naps. He will fall asleep in the Moby if we go outside for walks, which is our typical routine after dinner, but with the heat wave we haven't walked the past two days.
  • @ashgee18 thank you for sharing that!! It is so helpful!!
  • Wow!! That's good to know! Interesting because my neighbor has a baby 8 days behind L and she was thinking breastmilk was the cause of the acne. I better tell her it's exactly the opposite!!

Was it this thread where someone mentioned clearing up baby acne with breastmilk? I'm on mobile and it's a pain to look through everything, but whoever suggested it is a genius! E had so many bumps on her nose, so yesterday I put some on her and this morning they're pretty much all gone. Breastmilk is magical.
Thanks! I know I suggested it but I won't take full credit incase someone else did, too.

@schaze I need to try this. DS's just
    got way worse.

  • My body is striking back against my nearly symptom free pregnancy. Got the phone call back from my Dr today that what I thought was a simple UTI, is a full on bladder infection. My everything hurts :/
  • @Caseymw118 of course your pediatrician will be a better source of info, but your LO was born early so keep in mind that it's not uncommon for these LOS to be less alert... My LO was born 4 weeks early and basically that whole first month was her pretending to still be in the womb! We had to wake her up a lot and it was apparently quite normal...

Apparently breast milk is good for diaper rash too according to my SIL although I haven't had the opportunity to try it. It is definitely magical...now if only it can sprout money in the backyard...

This kid is driving me nuts! All she wants to do is eat and fight sleep. She woke up from a nap like 7 hours ago and wants to be attached to my boobs non-stop while taking little naps on me in between boobs. UGH!
  • @Heathereaddy If you're anywhere near the 6 week mark, welcome to the club!! It's joyous, lol!!
  • I've been in that club for 2 days now and he's only about to be 3 weeks on Monday!!
  • Moms who have gotten your period already, how did you know it was your period vs postpartum bleeding kicking in again? Did you have symptoms? I'm 7w pp and bleeding had stopped and today I noticed it's a little heavier again.
  • @schaze my period came back 3 1/2 weeks postpartum :/ Lochia ended at about 3 weeks and I had no bleeding for a day or 2. The day my period came back I had my usual cramping & the dark bright red blood started again. I had my PP appointment early at 4 weeks and my doctor confirmed it looked like my period was starting back up already. It lasted longer (a little over a week) and the flow was heavier than what I'm used to.
  • Hi mommies
How do you get you LOs to sleep? My baby girl always falls asleep on my boob then I burp her and set her down but my mom pointed out that she should also be going to sleep on her own not on the boob all the time. I have tried feeding her then rocking and singing etc but she stays wide awake or drifts into sleep but eventually wakes up. What do y'all think?
  • @lalamilk- the ideal is to lay them down drowsy and have them go to sleep on their own. However, many babies at this age won't do that. DD2 will fall asleep nursing at night plus 1-2 times during the day. Plus she falls asleep in my baby carrier about 2 times per day. Plus in my arms (not nursing) a couple of times. If she takes a long nap, I nurse right when she wakes up, so she isn't always falling asleep on the boob. If she looks tired I try laying her down. If she starts crying, I walk her or put her in my baby carrier.

I'm going to keep trying to lay her down drowsy but I'm not going to leave her crying if it doesn't work. Sleep training isn't recommended before 6 months old. So I'm not worried at this age.
  • @TiffRox81 yes, she'll be 6 weeks Tuesday. It seems like every week is some new phase that drives me crazy lol. Ugh!
  • @lalamilk DD was colicky and it took us a good year to get her to sleep on her own! This one is more relaxed. At bedtime I lay him down. He usually cries the first time or two, so I'll pick him up u till he calms down then put him back. The rest of the night after he nurses he goes back to sleep on his own. We swaddle him and put him in the crib. Every baby is different though. We tried everything with DD and she just screamed and screamed.

  • I think it is smart to keep trying to lay them down drowsy from day 1, but of course not a fan of crying it out at this age. My DD1 and now DD2 have very similar sleeping habits. Yes, nursing often puts them to sleep, but sometimes not completely passed out so I do a quick transfer to the bed, boppy, or swing. Sometimes if I am busy I will use the swing and a bit of coddling and shushing does the trick. There are even times where she will fall asleep in the boppy or bed just being drowsy.

I think it really depends on your baby and their natural habits. I have been blessed with good sleepers who are good at getting themselves into a deep sleep. With both girls we use a soft hat, swaddle, and fuzzy pjs for bedtime in a pack n play in our room. As newborns they both wake up 2 times a night to eat. I do a quick change, then feed, burp, and back to bed. They both used a binky sparingly but usually only suck on it when they are content and spit it out once asleep. I also use a tap light or the light off the monitor at night feedings to not stir them too much.
  • How long was it before y'all noticed a pattern or baby slept more consistently through the night? LO is 2.5 weeks old and some nights she's great and other nights she wakes up for 2 hour stretches several times at night.
  • @babycakesday  My DD2 is 2 weeks 3 days old and has been on the same schedule (she naturally fell into it) for about a week. Of course not 100% consistently and I think this all depends on the baby.

These times aren't exact but within the hr. She eats at 7am, 10am, 1pm, 4pm, 7pm, 10pm, and then 2 times a night but that varies...usually between 1-2 am and 4-5 am.
  • @babycakesday Every baby is so different. DS sleeps about 20 hours a day, so by a week old we had him easily only waking to feed at night. I assume at some point he'll become more alert and we may have to retrain him at night vs. day though. DD was colicky and was 10 weeks or so when we were past long screaming spells at night.

  • It just kinda worries me that if she won't go to sleep on her own how is she going to sleep when I go back to work when she's used to falling asleep when she is nursing. Good thing I still have about another month and a half before that happens. On another note I hope this 6 week growth spurt is almost over bc this no naps during the day is very exhausting!
  • @lalamilk She has to sleep eventually. Whoever has her then will be the one who has to figure it out. Maybe she'll fall asleep taking a bottle instead then. Things can change a lot too in 6 weeks.
