Re: Newborn/Postpartum Thread

  • My LO is 5 weeks. I have also been doing eat, awake, sleep. But she is so sporadic with her awake and sleep times! I would love to get her on a 3 hour schedule just for some consistency. I have been doing a 9pm bedtime.

I have never cleaned out inside her mouth or seen anyone else do that. I didn't know that was a thing! She is almost 6 weeks old.
I do it in the morning when I get her dressed and at night when I put her pjs on. @setosh
  • So I have had this heavy feeling down there for about 3 days. I could tell it just didn't feel right. I haven't looked down there yet after giving birth yet because, well, who wants to? This morning I decided I better have a look and I think I can see my cervix. I am pretty sure I have a prolapse. I am freaking out and crying and waiting to be seen first thing this morning. I was so active during pregnancy and have done an excellent job of letting myself heal. I had an easy delivery, but my baby was almost 10 lbs. Ugh, I hope I get good answers.
  • I'm crossing my fingers that everything is okay @hannahmp
  • @hannahmp I've had the same heavy feeling and have been scared to look. Maybe I should... Good luck at your appointment and let me know how it goes!
  • 6 weeks old here and we are on a very "loose" schedule. I'm trying to stick to it more lately since I'll be going back to work after next week. She eats 4 ounces of formula every 4 hours and she will wake up at those increments almost like clockwork 90% of the time. I have been waking her up to eat the past few days during the daytime if she's still sleeping, but will wait at night until she wakes up and starts fussing. She will sometimes go 5 hours between one of her nighttime feedings but usually no longer than that. I'm trying to bump up the intake by half an ounce every week or so, so we can work up to longer nighttime sleep spurts. Right now, I try to stick to feedings at 9am, 1pm, 5pm, 9pm, 1am, 5am. If she goes past the 1 or 5am feedings, I still feed her at the normal times during the day to keep her somewhat on track.

Diaper-wise, she usually has one big poop in the morning or early afternoon since we've switched to exclusive formula. I'll change that pretty quickly once I know she's done. She's pretty audible with the poop grunts so you can usually tell when she's finished lol. Wet diapers I will change before every feeding. If she goes just a tiny bit during the day, I wait until I feed her since I know she'll go again right away. Like PP have said, it doesn't bother her and she doesn't get fussy when it's just slightly wet, so I let her go for a bit otherwise I'd be changing 10+ slightly wet diapers a day.

I don't regularly wipe her gums with a washcloth. Maybe every other day when I'm wiping the formula that has dripped down between her neck rolls. She likes to suck the water out of the washcloth so I just do a quick wipe. I've also heard that while not necessary to do all the time, it does just prepare them for when you start brushing. I don't think the formula or breastmilk sitting on the gums bothers anything. But when they start sprouting teeth, the hygiene is more important. Once there's a tooth, you gotta keep that sucker clean!
  • C section moms: when did y'all stop taking your pain medications? I just realized it's been 12 hours since I forgot to take mine and I feel fine, but I have like at least half the bottle still full. I'm unsure if it's too early to just stop or if my doctor just prescribed more just in case my pain was really bad.
  • @babycakesday My pain meds say on the bottle to take every 8 hours as needed for pain. Honestly I'm weirdly pain tolerant and was only on a stronger dosage of Motrin and haven't taken any for about 2 weeks (I'm 3 weeks PP) and I feel fine but I'm not sure how yours is prescribed or how your pain is.

I have way more than half the bottle left. I didn't take any after about a week post op, except for maybe half a hydrocodone if I was a little achey that day.
  • @tennisbabymama Mine says the exact same thing. I also have a high pain tolerance.

@brandiK I also have a refill available so the fact that so much was going to be left really through me for a loop.

Thanks ladies! Glad to know I wasn't the only one who finishes way earlier than expected.
  • @babycakesday oh wow! I didn't get a refill lol. That would make me wonder as well. The only prescriptions I ever finish are antibiotics. But it's nice to have a few pain pills leftover for when I inevitably start my period again. Ugh. If you feel fine though, I wouldn't worry, your doctor is clearly more empathetic!
  • @babycakesday the doctor who discharged me was really insistent on giving me pain meds. I never took any and got by on Motrin and Tylenol. I wouldn't suggest going cold turkey if you've been on narcotics for longer than a couple of days. I'm 16 days PP and haven't taken any Motrin or Tylenol in about a week.

@hannahmp glad you got that confirmed! What a relief!!

  • @sboston06 I think I'm going to just take them at night for the next few days and then just switch to regular tylenol if I'm feeling anything.

I'm also on antibiotics because of some drainage from my incision so it'll be nice to not have to remember 2 different schedules.

OK so LO has this interesting pattern going on - wondering if anyone else has this too?

He's got two periods during the day where he is wide awake, but fidgety and it last about an hour each.  The first one of the day is pretty much like clockwork - We wake up at 7am, feed, go back for a nap.  At 10am he wakes again, I feed him, change his diaper, etc - then from 11-12 he's completely wired.  I need to hold him - if I put him down, he'll eventually start crying.  When I'm holding him, it seems like he just has a lot of pent up energy that he has no idea what to do with, he fusses and makes lots of noise and flails his arms and legs around.  So I take that opportunity to give him a bath.  At 12 he tires out and goes to sleep.

Then, at night, about 11pm at night immediately after he eats, the same thing happens until midnight.

The rest of the day, he eats and naps like a champ without much drama.

Does this happen with anyone else's LO?  Does anyone know what to "do" with him - other than just hold him? I'm cool to just hold him, he just doesn't seem very content, he's so fussy, I'm not sure if there's something better I can do to either calm or give him something engaging to do... if you can even do that with a newborn!

ETA: I've tried swaddling him during this time in order to sooth him, but he just wants to break free!
  • @kellz14 We go through this a lot in our house too. I try and play with her while propping her up in the boppy. Sometimes hold her laying out in front of me and make faces. We've also tried the play mat but I personally don't get much time out of her with that. The boppy works the best for us! Also the swing...I turn on the mobile and music and she seems pretty content listening/watching that.
  • @kellz14 great question! I have no idea what to do with her either.

  • @brandiK that schedule sounds like a dream! We're at 4 weeks over here and no real pattern/schedule in sight. Did your LO find that pattern on her own or did you do something to encourage it ?
  • @kellz14 Sometimes I wear LO and put on music and dance. Small amount of exercise and she seems to like it. Nothing crazy, just swaying.
  • @TiffRox81 I'm a Zumba instructor and I've definitely put on some of my class playlists before and done all my routines super low-key.
  • A bit graphic for early morning but...

Is anyone still having clotting, CONSISTENT bleeding 4 or more weeks PP? I have not stopped bleeding (vaginal delivery, only slight tear) and now it's getting a little concerning. Anytime I wipe, it is bright red blood. I had a lot of clotting so called Dr. two days ago, nurse said I need to stop picking up my toddler daughter - she's over 20lbs (so easy to say just don't pick up a fussy toddler!). Luckily, I'm on vacation with family who are dealing with daughter, so we are testing out whether this is the culprit. It's definitely not the heavy clotting I had when I called but I still have bright, red blood and part of me is wondering if I already popped stitches and I'm walking around with an open wound (sorry for that visual)? Or are my insides falling out???
This is my second so I feel like an idiot for not remembering I couldn't lift daughter, have been doing so since I got back from hospital. It's hard not to. I am wondering if the damage was done early and that's why it won't stop.
Anyone else still have heavy bleeding this far PP?

  • @applebottomgenes Picking up your daughter probably isn't helping, but I doubt that it's causing you to pass more clots. My bleeding went away at 1.5 weeks PP and then it came back. It comes in waves of light and then heavy. I'll be 3 weeks PP this week, but I stopped passing clots after a few days. Everyone is different so if you keep experiencing this I'd probably go get checked out.
  • Thanks! The Ob doesn't seem concerned (since I've called twice) but I am, so I will see what they think of seeing me. I'm sure they'll ask I wait until the 6w PP visit. This new kid has already ruined my nipples, would like to save my vagina if possible!
  • @applebottomgenes I would just tell them you want to be seen. Better safe than sorry. My son is 3 and 40lbs. I have picked him up and am not bleeding like that. You only have one chance to heal properly. Better to go and be told it's nothing then find out later there is a problem.
  • I'm over 6 weeks PP and still bleeding.  I had my 6 week follow up and my ob didn't seem worried. She said call again if it's still happening in two weeks.
  • I'm 3 weeks PP and still bleeding and I had some big, out of nowhere clots earlier this week actually. I called too, and they weren't concerned. I haven't been picking anything heavy up and I have been doing a good job about resting. I'm a STM and I only bled for about 10 days last time. I had a vaginal birth and zero tearing this time so I'm not sure what's going on! @applebottomgenes
  • Are any of you dealing with acid burn diaper rash? DS has had it for about 3 weeks now and the pedi said its from acidic poop and to lather on zync oxide cream after every diaper change. But it is still there and looks so painful! I started looking up how I can change my diet to help with the acidity and I found that tomatoes could be the culprit. Do any of you have experience with this? I love tomatoes but I would give them up to help out my little dude
  • Does anyone have any tips for cleaning the milk out of their neck rolls?? Ours fights us constantly. I feel like we need to get in there and do some good cleaning tho!!
  • @arhodes6  No help as far as acidity (though I have heard about tomatoes being an issue) but baking soda in the bath and aquaphor baby advanced therapy literally gets rid of butt issues within hours if you haven't tried those things.
@TiffRox81 E hates when we do it, I usually do it during a diaper change/clothes change. It is most helpful if my husband is changing his butt while I wipe his neck, then he is super distracted and fights less!
  • @theshannondee thanks for those tips! I'll have to go pick that up and try it tonight.
  • @applebottomgenes With my first, I had bright red blood and clots for 4 weeks. I had a very large clot at 2.5 weeks that I called the doctor about. The bleeding didn't totally stop until 7 weeks. My doctor wasn't worried and I never had any problems because of it. Most moms with older kids are still picking up their bigger ones. If your body was used to it while pregnant, I think it's unlikely that's causing a problem.

  • @applebottomgenes I just stopped bleeding and having clots at 6 weeks PP. Every time I was "too active" it got heavier. Even now I have some spotting but my OB wasn't worried about it at my appointment. Like others have said, everyone is different and some people take longer to stop bleeding.

@TiffRox81 I find it's easiest to clean neck rolls with just a finger and some water - you can slide right into those little crevices!

  • @abgia while she was breastfeeding I was just feeding on demand. We switched to formula only around 3-4 weeks and that seemed to keep her full and consistent. I just kept upping the amount she eats and taking a bit longer between feedings and she takes to it well. I think it's a combo of what your LO does well with and staying consistent with that, and I just try to keep her eating at equal intervals and she's catching onto it well.

@TiffRox81 mine hates it as well but so much drips down there and it gets so funky! I find using a warm washcloth helps better than cold wipes. It breaks the funk up better and she doesn't freak out as much.
  • Has anyone experienced their LO breaking out? Camille has these tiny bumps on her face and I think she's having a reaction to my soap maybe. It's only on her face where she falls asleep on my chest and boob often.
  • Popping in from the August thread. ( my LO came 3 weeks early on July 14th and is 4 weeks old.)

How do you know if your baby sleeps too much? She has always been a good and easy sleeper. I am just concerned she is sleeping too much at 4 weeks! I would guess that she probably sleeps nearly 20 hours a day. She wakes for feedings and typically falls asleep right after. She usually has an early morning and afternoon/evening chunk of 1 hour she is really awake (2 hours total). Anyone else experience a near one-month-old with these kinds of sleeping habits? She is on a fairly regular night feeding schedule (every 3 hours) and a more irregular daytime feeding.

Also, we had been noticing that breastmilk was giving baby severe gas and acid reflux. Every waking moment was painful for her and she needed help with trapped gas. We switched to formula for one day and night and have no discomfort and a much happier LO. Allergies or perhaps something I am eating??

We plan to bring up these problems to the pedi at our next appt, but wanted to check in here to see.

We have quite the case of baby acne the past couple weeks that sounds similar to what you described. I know it's not her soap or detergent because it's just her face and chest. She is always pretty warm temperature wise so I think the combo of her getting hot at night and sweaty plus spilling her formula on herself sets it off. Plus just hormones and typical baby acne anyways. I haven't thought of it being from my own soap, I'll have to keep that in mind. But it really looks more like acne than a skin reaction. I try to wipe her off with warm water a few times a day to keep it clean and not over dry the skin. I might try switching to burts bees soap also since a lot of people on here love it. Just in case!
  • @Caseymw118 Bring it up with your ped, but o don't know if they can sleep too much. Does his behavior seem typical when awake. My DS is only 2.5 weeks but he sounds just like yours and I wonder the same. He still doesn't wake himself up for enough feedings for my comfort, so I often set an alarm and wake him. I'd say I wake him for about 4 out of 8 or 9 feedings in 24 hours. Wondering when he'll start to be more alert.

My LO has baby acne on his cheeks. He's had it since birth. I've heard rubbing breast milk on them helps. I only started 2 days ago and I already see improvement.
  • @setosh I've heard the same with breastmilk. I have like 2 bags left in the freezer from my futile attempts to stock up. I might thaw them out for that reason. I think it just needs to run it's course though and they are supposed to grow out of it in a few weeks. It gives me high school flashbacks, I hope she has my husband's clear skin lol.
