Any other mommies have LOs with tongue/lip ties or suspected tongue/lip ties? What was done to diagnose/fix? What signs made them look for the tie? They thought he had one in the hospital but he was less than cooperative for the exam. But he is showing all the signs of having a tie and becoming more miserable. And it is affecting my milk supply. Monday is the earliest they could get him in, I'm just crossing my fingers they can figure it out/fix it. Seeing him miserable breaks my heart!
@joberkiser mine does. A consistently bad latch, nipple soreness that won't go away, etc are the things that raise suspicions. A good LC should be able to inspect and identify one like mine did. My milk supply has been quite good so far, but nipple soreness will not go away, and although his latch usually seems "good enough" i can tell many times his latching is not quite optimal. I'm going to a pediatric dentist later this month who specializes in lip/tongue ties and fixes them via laser... he'll do the official exam and recommend whether or not i should go ahead with the procedure.
Kiddsteeth.com also has some good articles on the subject
@joberkiser DS had one but our pediatrician saw it right away and had the Ear/Nose/Throat dr come in the same day to cut it. I had some residual soreness from him already having nursed on it but it's gotten way better. Hope they can help you!
My LO has a tongue tie, I'm the one that noticed it and then it was confirmed by my midwife. He's doing pretty good and has figured out how to latch and hasn't been loosing weight. I got a decent crack on one side probably from a bad latch on day one. after feeding I rub the nipple with breast milk and let it air dry, it's definitely helped some. also different feeding positions helped because he wasn't consistently sucking on the wound at the same angle. My favourite position is laying back and having him lay on my tummy (his feet point towards mine). We will be getting it clipped, I haven't heard from the doctor in town who does it yet so not sure when it will be. I've heard tongue tie could potentially cause speech issues later so I'd rather clip it now than later when he's older.
Thanks ladies! Makes me feel a little better that I am not alone. I'm super hopeful they can fix it Monday while we are there. It is to the point where I am worried about him starting to lose weight because he isn't even latching/eating right no matter what I try (I realized my milk supply was dipping, so I got the supplementing formula and have tried 4 different bottles/nipples and he has the same bad latch problem with everything.). Plus the excess gas it is causing is making him miserable, and my nipples freakin hurt! I had him at 8:23pm on Saturday and by the time the LC got there early Monday morning my nips were bruised busted open and bleeding. We got him to latch some better, so it hasn't got to that bad again, but they are so sore it makes me cringe when he latches. I need to start pumping more to keep my supply up, but I'm so sore the last time I tried, I ended up swollen and in pain. I just want for him not to be in pain and me to not lose my supply before it gets fixed.
I've been having a really heavy feeling down there for a few days. It's worse at night. I know some of this is normal but does anyone know when to call the doctor about it? When I look it up online it doesn't say and I'm worried about prolapse.
So, I was sick two weeks ago and she has been sounding kind of stuffed up since. I thought that she was sick too, but it has now been two weeks! Anybody have babies that just sound congested?
@shaylalr- my LO is only 2 weeks but she sounds congested all the time. Dr said it's because her nasal passages are still small and she needs to grow a bit more, he wasn't concerned. DD1 also sounded congested but she had bad reflux.
@hreed7289 I felt like that the first few weeks PP if I had been on my feet or too active, it felt like everything between my legs was falling out.. I would definitely put in a call to the nurse line or your doc just to be sure, they might want to check you out.
@shaylalr mine sounds congested off and on. I looked it up and it said it was normal. I think it's partly due to the mucus still in them from being inside us.
This may seem like a dumb question, but can I take LO to my postpartum follow up appointment? My appointment is tomorrow and while I *could* have someone watch her, I'd really rather not have to pack her and her stuff over to someone else's house just to go to a 15 minute appointment. Especially since both my mom and my sister live on the NW side of town and my doctor is on the south end, like 10 minutes NE of my house, so I'd have to drive across town four times (and take up half the day). I seem to vaguely remember something about them not wanting you to bring the baby to the PP appointment but I'm not sure if that was this office or the other one that I went to for the first 2/3 of my pregnancy.
@erin7264 I have mine tomorrow too and I'm taking her with me. I'm not going to make DH take a half day just for a 10 minute appointment, and my in-laws work. Hopefully it isn't an issue, they didn't say anything to me when I scheduled it.
@erin7264 I actually was't going to take DD but my last couple of appointments all the nurses and receptionists kept saying they can't wait to see her at my 6 week appointment. So I guess some offices might not want you to, but it definitely isn't a general rule.
Thanks ladies. I will just take her, they can scold me if they don't like it. I think it may have been the other office that did not allow babies at PP appointments anyway. With any luck she will sleep the whole time!
I took DD and DD2 to my appointment today! Just make sure to have something LO can sit in while you get weighed. I wanted to wear DD2 but brought the car seat instead. Everyone seemed happy to see my kids. They did great and the appointment was only 10 minutes.
My office pretty much shuns you if you don't let them see the baby at some point. I brought her to my PP blood pressure check, but left her home with DH when I got my IUD.
It wasn't even a question in my mind to bring him! I would not be cool with an office that wouldn't let you bring your BABY to your POST PARTUM appointment, like what??
@shaylalr Henry sounds congested often and part of it is due to his severe reflux and like everyone else said small nasal passages. We have been using the Nose Fredia when he seems extra congested and it has been helping.
This is probably a dumb question from a STM, but how often do you change baby's diaper? With DD, I changed her as soon as I knew she was wet and used a ton of diapers because it never occurred to me to do anything different. She was maybe 10 months old when I found out from other moms that is not the norm. This LO already poops like 15 times a day so I use approximately a gajillion diapers. Thinking about waiting 2-3 hours if he is just wet, but my anxiety is making me feel serious guilt when I know he is wet and just leave it.
@whataboutscience- I change at pretty much every feeding (also STM)... So every 2,3, or 4 hours. If she's barely wet I'll wait until after she eats to see if it's more or wait until it's pretty soaked (or she's fussy). She's not had any issues with a diaper rash and most of the time it doesn't bother her.
@whataboutscience I also usually change after every feeding because that's when LO usually poops. Otherwise, if the diaper is not too wet after a feeding, I'll skip it til the next feeding. I keep tracking of all the diaper changes on my phone; we usually go through 7-9 a day.
I brought LO with me to my PP appointment - she sat there fussing while I got my IUD and I explained to her, "This is so I don't have another one of you for awhile! I love you but we want to be careful." Haha, I'll have to tell her this when she's old enough to understand.
July BMB Siggy Challenge: Weird Hot Dog Situations
@whataboutscience I change him as soon as I realize he's wet. He always let's me know haha. And we're using cloth diapers so it's probably a little different. It's working for us though, we go through a lot of diapers but he's never had even a hint of diaper rash.
We change at feedings too. Or if we hear the poo explosion, immediately after. She doesn't seem to care about sitting in either so we're not alerted otherwise, lol.
These frowth spurts are for the birds!! This kid is not sleeping unless she's with me and eating non stop!!! How many days does this last for?!
Anyone trying to do a schedule with their baby? The sample schedules I've looked at just don't work for her. But I really want some kind of routine going because I am now going back to work 2 days a week.
So a nurse informed me that I should be wiping out LO's mouth once daily with a clean facecloth to wash his mouth out. I've also read that it should be done after every feeding. I was wondering how many times you guys do this? Or if it's even a thing? I wasn't told this by anyone so I didn't clean his mouth out until he was like a week old.
@shaylalr DS is 3 weeks and the only schedule I'm attempting is Eat Awake Sleep, and waking every 2 hours to eat during the day (to try and help him sleep better at night)

I'm on my second son and never have done this. DS1 turned out fine lol. I wouldn't worry too much
@setosh I have a book of "baby's first year" and this weeks chapter was all about how to give a bath. It specifically says you don't need to clean the mouth at all.
So I noticed something really weird the other day-when E was fussing and inconsolable, I noticed her soft spot on top of her head was super pronounced. It really freaked me out a bit! After she had been calm for awhile, it looked totally normal again. I do plan on asking her pedi about this at her 2 month appt in a couple weeks as I'm not super concerned about it, but has anyone else seen that before?
@setosh I think I've heard to do that to clean their gums and also to have them more agreeable when it comes time to start brushing their teeth. I haven't bothered yet though. I think I started doing it in the mornings with DD when she was a few months old.
@shaylalr How old is your LO? My goal is something similar to @AB34 in the near future. Worked really well for DD. DS is 2.5 weeks old and ridiculously sleepy. I'm not complaining! But it's more eat, sleep, eat, sleep, eat, wake, sleep, etc. We try really hard to keep him up from 6-7 (which is sometimes impossible) and then I nurse and put him to bed. If he's been sleeping all afternoon, then it can take an hour or more to put him down in bed. We did start a bedtime as soon as he came home from the hospital. We are very rigid about bed/nighttime and it worked super well for us with our daughter. After 7 and until 7 in the morning, it's lights out and quiet. Up to feed, back to bed. No TV, no outings, etc. DD was so colicky she only took 15 minute naps until she was like 6 months, but she was sleeping 8-5 regularly at 10 weeks and I think it's because we were so consistent.
@shaylalr I'm trying to ease into one! Feeding 2.5-3 hours in the day. If he doesn't wake himself by then, i wake him to feed. Yesterday i was the most militant about it and he slept two 4 hour blocks last night. I only got up once! FX for tonight... he's been extra sleepy today and not eating as much as yesterday...
@schaze I think that's normal though it doesn't hurt to ask the pedi. When LO is calm the soft spot feels sunken in but when he's freaking out it is less sunken in and more pronounced like you're saying.
@schaze Still a normal number of diapers? If you mean it looks sunken in, it can be a sign of dehydration.
@kellz14 I'm waking every 2.5 hours during the day, but he can seriously eat completely asleep. He just barely half wakes up enough to latch and then is back in a deep sleep. Fortunately this kid sleeps like 20 hours a day so we still get sleep at night regardless. I'm continuing this practice because I figure he has to snap out of it eventually and I want him to know night is for sleeping.
