Re: August Randoms!!!

  • @Bibliobebe I was getting a haircut today and the baby kicked so hard to one side that i had to suddenly and dramatically grab the handle of the chair and brace myself. The hairdresser must have thought I was insane

Thanks! I'm always just curious :)
My OB said that she doesn't do it every week unless I ask for it

  • @Megan324 - agreed with others, there's no normal.. I mean obviously being dilated enough to continue with labor would be one thing. Also, different providers definitely have different feels for effacement/dilation. I think last time I had quite a bit of effacement (thinning) before any dilation.. like was maybe 50 or 70% effaced and still 1cm.

  • Cervical checks have always been ridiculously painful for me, but I'm too nosy to deny them. I also like to have an idea of what's going on down there before labor hits (whether it's spontaneous or an induction). I'll probably deny a check next week at my appointment since I'm only 36 weeks, but by 37-38 weeks I'll go ahead and allow them. I have a lot of anxiety about going into labor at home alone with two kids so I feel like a reference point will help me know what to do. If I was, say, 1 cm a couple days before I go into labor I'd feel comfortable with not scrambling like a mad woman to get to the hospital, but if I had some good progression going on and was 4 cm or something, I'd probably lose my shit and get there ASAP. My last baby came at lightening speed and H works nights 80 miles from home, so I'm on edge about the whole thing.
  • Quite oddly... or luckily?... my clinic doesn't do any cervical checks leading up to labor. I think they might do one after the mom comes in for the actual birth, just to see how far along everything is but then after that, they won't do another one unless there seems to be an issue and they have to check to make sure a transfer isn't necessary.

Definitely not going to complain about it after hearing all of your reactions to that apparently lovely experience.

  • @RG1 I think a weekly appointment thread would be good.

re: Cervical checks- I am 37 weeks today and had them check me last week and this week. The first one didn't hurt at all, today's was a little pinch. They ask me every appointment if I want to and I like knowing. Last week I was 50% effaced no dilation, this week was 60% effaced and 1cm dilated so it is nice to see some progression.

The more the better :) It could just be a place to chat about appointments, not so much like a "check in" with questions to answer

  • Had another NST today and baby girl, as usual, took her time in doing what was needed. Stresses me out. But my OB is awesome and comforting.

I thought that since I am having a scheduled c-section, I'd get out of the GBS test and cervical checks. But no. I get to do those on Monday. I guess they want the GBS just in case my water breaks spontaneously. Which hopefully it doesn't. And the same with the cervical check--they want a baseline of where I am. I don't remember either being too bad last time (checks were uncomfortable, but nit awful) and she said we'll just do this one. So, there's that!

as for shopping with toddlers...I used to wear LO on my back while shopping, but that got cumbersome as I got more pregnant. We just discovered the mini-carts at trader Joe's and those are magical! He loves pushing his own cart and doesn't even run into people or things!
DS1 has just recently been interested in pushing the cart...but he only has the option of the large one that I'd prefer he ride in.  So. annoying.  He's definitely not tall enough.

  • @RG1 that would be cool. Would also give people a heads up as to what's coming next if they aren't as far along.
People can toss out what week they are, anything good/bad from the appointment, etc. I agree that most of that ends up in Randoms and could definitely be its own!

McKenna likes to push the cart as well. Sometimes I just go with it because it keeps her happy and she's still staying with me. She lets me help, so we don't run into things. Just slows are progress through the store waaaay down.

  • I just realized that I forgot to post the BTDT check in, and I'm pretty sure I've forgotten 2 weeks in a row. I deserve banning.
  • I LOVE Cavity eggs, like, to the point of diabetes love them.  In Italy they sold really fast on base so one year as soon as they came out I bought 2 boxes (No, not the boxes that have like 4 eggs, the vendor boxes that have like 30 eggs!) And thought, Ok, these will last till next year! Took them to work..... uummmmm, they lasted like a month.  No joke.  And I hate the Halloween ones! I swear they aren't the same!!

Is anyone else taking their husband to the appts when they do cervical checks? My husband seems interested in going to another appt but he doesn't know that I'd be in stirrups and I haven't described it to him yet.  Even though I keep trying to prep him for all the glory that will be L&D, I don't think he REALLY gets it.  He's gun-shy about anything medical and Im worried when the time comes he's going to pass out or totally freeze.  Which is one of the reasons I got a doula.  I thought if I took him it might be a good intro for him to the world of medical vagina-ness.
  • @MrsVoorhees I can't even remember to post in my ticker change thread.

Oh, God. Which cavity do the eggs come out of? I guess...I guess it's the cavity eggs typically come from....hahaha great autocorrect!
  • @MrsVoorhees my understanding is it can be a sign of abnormalities (unlikely at this point since they have done tons of genetic testing) and increases the risk of complications such as umbilical or placenta prolapse. The later I believe would be the reason they would want to potentially induce.

I really don't think it'll come to that since I was a 24 and anything above 25 is high, but if I do I'll definitely be asking about risk vs benefits and making a decision from there.
  • @AnnaS930 I'm with you on the cervical checks. Don't find them very uncomfortable and I am totally fascinated with the process and knowing what's currently going on.
  • @RN1stBae - I thought you were calling them that because they cause cavities and I thought. BOOOO! hahaha, I love candy so much. Then @MrsVoorhees had to go and change the meaning of cavity egg to something even more unpleasant.. DOUBLE BOOOOO!

And a bonus FFFC: Regardless of thinking of an origin and result of eating these eggs, I could down a few of them right now.  I just had a scoopful of frosting (from the cupcake cake I brought in for baby shower yesterday) and have a belly ache.. and that wouldn't even slow me down.

  • @diagonalley and @camichael84--oh, yeah! Lo likes to try to push the full-size carts too, and that is always a disaster that ends in tears. For all of us. But the little kid-sized carts are awesome! Trader joes has them here, as does at least one regular grocery store. I wish they were everywhere! Or maybe I should just get my own and bring it with me. Haha.
  • @AnnaS930 I'm jealous of your frosting eating. Someone on my local mom board was looking for Rainbow Chip frosting. Ever since I read that, I've wanted to get a can a frosting and scoop out a spoonful for myself. I've resisted so far...only because I don't want to load the girls in the car.

  • @AnnaS930 did you end up with double the food yesterday since it ended up being a double shower? Because that would be amazing!
  • @RN1stBae My husband saw me get two cervical checks last pregnancy. It was kind of weird having him there, and not at all like the things he saw during childbirth. Honestly, he was angled in a way during the appointments that he didn't see anything, even though there really isn't much to see during a check. As opposed to birth where he saw EVERYTHING.

I read that article and really? A great time for outdoor exercise? XD Not so much for me lol, it is so hot and humid I struggle to take a walk everyday. I usually wait until the sun goes down too so it is not as warm. Here is Ontario we barely had any rain... it is worst summer for that in a long time.

@LARK81  Happy late birthday :) Hopefully you had a nice day other than the stabbing!

I have a random and it's not a really good one. (baby is okay) I am sad and scared. I had an MRI this week and got the results yesterday. I should probably provide some backstory because the only place I talked about this is the PGAL check in.
I have Neurofibromatosis so that makes me a high risk pregnancy and I had to be followed at the special pregnancy program at Mount Sinai hospital downtown Toronto. Now thankfully of all the ultrasounds we had none of them reveal a single fibroma on baby so that is very good.
Me on the other hand the anesthesiologist wanted an MRI to see if I had any fibromas in my brain or spine. Last MRI I had was when I was 14 and it was clear, but pregnancy can make additional fibromas develop. Well my brain is fine but I do have a fibroma in my spine so that likely means no epidural for me (I will know next week when the anesthesiologist gives his report) and that scares me so much :( I don't handle pain that well and other pain management options scare me too, I don't like being high at all.

I am SO glad baby is healthy and I feel so silly for being scared and complaining about this, because after all it is just my own comfort. But it is just not how I pictured things and it is hard to deal with.

  • @Alyeena - I had nubain during my last labor and it was a sufficient pain block for me (I do have a somewhat high pain tolerance).  If anything it made me feel as if I had had maybe 1 glass of wine.. fully coherent and in control, just dulled the pain for maybe an hour or so as I neared the pushing stages. It was worn off by pushing but I didn't find that to be a painful time as I was focused on baby coming out - the drug had zero effect on baby.

Of course, this is only my experience, but I do not like the feeling of being out of control/high.. so I was a bit nervous. I'm also a pharmacist who doesn't like taking meds - because I'm weird. It made me a bit nauseous, but didn't give me spins or any other symptoms.

All of this to say.. I had a good experience with Nubain, so it might be a decent option for you if epidural is off the table. You can do this!!
