I just priced out one daycare last night: $975/month. Curious to see how much the one in the less fancy part of town is (they didn't have their prices online).
Mentioned this to DH and he suggested that he could just stay at home with the baby... I told him that he'd have to promise me a spotless house and 6-pack abs. Not that we could affort to lose either income, but it's a nice dream.
I got ridiculously lucky and my boss told me I could bring baby up here until it was school aged when I told him I was pregnant (I was not expecting that).
But, before we got that awesome news, we fully intended on Hubby quitting to be a stay at home dad. Day care literally would've equaled his paycheck. So it just made more sense to us that if we were going to lose that income anyway, might as well have dad at home.

Out of curiousity, in the US, how much is the monthly cost for daycare? I've realized I actually have no clue what the general price is for you ladies.
We pay $244 per week plus $100 extra per month for phonics classes.

In MS the average newborn cost is about $130-$150 a week and preschool runs about $125. So I'm looking at $1k a month with 2 kids in daycare/school.
So this is probably going to be really random but I've always been big into playing my music and I'm trying to decide whether or not to return to the community band I'm in. I play French horn and we've been on break for the summer but I really miss it. I'm going to talk to my doc next week but I'm thinking I want to do it at least through the fall.
@MLRocha I'm bitey today, but your comment rubbed me wrong. I'm a SAHM. I certainly don't have a six pack or a spotless house.
I taught high school English before, and two kids in daycare would've eaten 75% of my monthly salary, easy.
I realize my kids are so fortunate to have a stay at home parent right now, but it was a huge sacrifice for me professionally and personally. I kick ass at my new role in life, but it is exhausting and frustrating and it sucks when anyone implies that I could just be exercising and maintaining a sparkling house. Rrriigghhttt.
Speaking of six pack abs... I think I'm going to try working out for the first time since positive pregnancy test... Anyone have any good YouTube workout videos?
@HeatSparks I feel like I meant to ask you this awhile ago but did you ever do an updated pregnancy announcement after the July fourth shirt to announce the twins?
@HeatSparks - The comment was definitely meant as a joke. He thinks that being a stay at home dad would be a cake walk and that he'd have all sorts of time for things he wants to do (mostly play video games, I'm assuming). So, I told him if it was going to be so easy for him, I'd have certain expectations.
I believe, on the other hand, that there is a good chance I'll be huddled in a corner crying and mumbling to myself within days of starting maternity leave.
@homemake No fun youtube videos here but I did recently (finally) start learning poi dancing because it is gentle and focuses a lot on developing coordination and balance. Just be sure to make or buy very soft heads because hitting legs, face, etc is pretty inevitable. I got a cheap LED set off amazon for like $17 and they've kept me entertained and off the couch for a couple weeks now. Not exactly traditional exercise but it's a lot of fun! Just... no fire yet, haha!
I got three free meals from blue apron and I love it. They have been super easy recipes but just with different seasoning. I'm wondering if you could just find the recipe online and then I could still shop myself since its kind of pricey
@raptormomma yup all their recipes are free online. I really liked Blue Apron until the food aversions set in and now I'm just not willing to try new things so I've been skipping every meal for like 3 months... We did buy ingredients for some of our favorites but I found I liked getting the delivery in the exact amount for new recipes b/c I spent a lot on a couple of recipes and ended up with extras of some things. We just wouldn't eat out the weeks we got it and then it offset the extra cost and we ended up saving money and eating better! Some of my favorite meals ended up being like the middle eastern dishes that I was least excited for.

@raptormomma I know you like the Blue Apron, but have you ever tried Emeals? It's like $50/year and you get 7 recipes a week with a shopping list. I then just plug that shopping list into Walmart Grocery and call it a day! They have all kinds of different meal plans too, Classic, Budget Friendly, Heart Healthy, Low Carb, Paleo, etc.
My hubby is so picky the meal plans have never worked for us. I have considered trying blue apron for a two person family and cooking the meals to take for my lunch.
Daycare here is $175 per week for newborns and it drops down $10 per week at every birthday and there's a $10 per week sibling discount. We have two kids in right now and it's almost $1200 per month- same as our mortgage. When the new baby comes were going to have from March to August of 3 kids in DC.
I'd also recommend either of these two meal planning services:
The Fresh 20 - They send a 5 dinner plan and grocery list each week. The idea is that you can buy 20 fresh ingredients each week (paired with pantry staples) to make all of your dinners. They'll send you a free sample of any of their plan types and usually follow up with discount emails.
Real Plans - This one is super flexible and can be used to plan out 7 days of breakfast, lunch and dinner. Additionally, you can pick specific ingredients that you don't like and they will never be included in your recipes. This one takes a bit more work, but it's my current favorite because I can import my own favorite recipes to mix in with theirs.
@MLRocha No worries. Jokes are hard for me today. I'm especially sensitive after yesterday's lunch with old coworkers, perhaps particularly the one who dropped the "you got your masters to stay home and change diapers?" joke. Hahaha. Yay. So funny.
Yes, yes I did. And I'm the best diaper-changer this side of the Mississippi, amongst other things.
@HeatSparks I hate people who feel like it's OK to judge or make comments on someone's education. So what if you have a degree you aren't using? And on the flip side, so what if you never got a degree? If you're a happy, functioning member of society, then you're winning.
@scifichick09 I agree. One thing that bugs me, being in academics, is how much value is placed on this. Also how a university degree is (still) promoted in so many K-12 schools as the only way to succeed in life.
@HeatSparks, I was an elementary teacher but got shut out after my twins were born. I also have my masters with nothing to show for it. I absolutely love my new career in real estate, but there were a rough couple years of feeling useless.
I got the joke, but yeah, expectations of being home suck her. I am really a full time Realtor and a full time Mom so if I am succeeding at one, it usually means the other is falling behind. Like, I sold two houses this week, but my son was out of underwear this morning. There is no balance.
My daughter failed her baked egg challenge this morning at the allergist. We avoided the epi, but just barely. Actually watching her panic and have a reaction sucked. She actually freaked out the allergist. So, for another year or until I request it, we are stuck with 5 major food allergies. At least we eliminated beef a few weeks ago.

I think that the view of university being the only measure of success can be so damaging. I know it only hurt me and I hope my kids won't feel the pressure I did.

I'm not sure about blue apron but hello fresh has all of their recipes online and they're really good!

Wow, that was a lot to catch up on. I have no degree, I'm a SAHM and my kid goes to preschool M-F. My workout clothes aren't $500, but I'll still call that as pretty damn good
Guys, in other news I ate two whole meals today, including meat and veggies! Fuck yeah! And my kid was feeling well enough that H took her to the movies for the first time and she LOVED it.
