@setosh we have had spit up issues as well. No vomitting though. Just a lotttt of spit up and it's always so inconsistent. It always looked like she spit up her whole meal. Our ped said it was normal since she's gaining weight and it doesn't bother her. She also recommended we burp a lot and keep her upright for 20-30 min after. Said she could just be eating too much.
Yeah I can't really tell if he's spitting up or vomiting. He's put on over a pound and he's only 12 days old. I just fed him and kept him upright. No spit up so far!
This kid has been eating NON STOP and lots!! I'm not sure my boobs can keep up! Anyone else's baby eating sometimes 5oz in a feeding? She'll be 6 weeks tomorrow so I'm thinking it's a growth spurt. I feel like I can't even leave the house...if she's not sleeping she just wants to be nursing!!
@TiffRox81 my LO is 4weeks and can easily do 4oz a feeding. But then he'll usually sleep for a good 3 - 3.5 hours. Otherwise, he eats every 1.5 - 2 hours.
On that note-- how much are you other ladies pumping in a sitting? I regularly will pump 4-6 oz (combined boobs).
@FTM53 4oz is typical here too. It's more the frequency that's been an issue for me. If she gets up earlier than 3hrs between it's like my production hasn't been replenished. She ends up frustrated!! I'm a little concerned because obviously I have nothing left to pump after. Ugh!!
I've been EPing since day 3 and my supply is sometimes all over the place. I average about 4-5 oz total, but sometimes I get as little as 3 or as much as 7. My LO is eating 4 oz about every 3 hours. Sometimes she can go longer if she's sleeping and she's 6 weeks tomorrow.
I feel like I post to this thread all the time but breastfeeding is the most difficult part of this newborn thing for me! Not so much on the baby's part, he seems fine with what he eats and when, but on my part! I've already posted a few times about mastitis and plugged ducts and oversupply, but I thought my body would have regulated my supply by now (5 weeks) and I would have fewer issues. It was seeming to go better for awhile and we had a good routine going so I felt like nursing was finally not causing painful issues, but then P got on a crazy sleep schedule and will go for really long stretches of sleep day and night. Of course he will eat when he wakes up, but when I already was dealing with oversupply issues and have to block feed anyways, going so long without nursing started causing the plugged ducts again because he couldn't empty one boob in a feeding and then I had to switch sides the next time because the other was so painfully full again. The LLL website said to feed a few times in a row on the same side and only switch when the other side was unbearably full to help with oversupply, but it doesn't work when I can't do two feedings in a row on the same side before filling up on the other. I pumped the other night just to get emptied on both sides because I just couldn't get rid of the plugged ducts just through nursing and it took an hour and a half to empty completely and I pumped 10oz. Maybe it was because of all the plugs I worked out, but if it was that difficult to empty using a pump on max and massage, how can my infant empty a breast that's totally full? I just don't know how to even things out on this sort of a sleep schedule, but on the rare occasion we wake him up to eat, he hardly eats anything because he just wants to sleep. I could just pump during those long stretches to keep my boobs empty, but I think that would just be a temporary solution and might make it worse in the long run. Ugh.
Eta- Sorry for the novel, I'm just getting frustrated and tired of constant discomfort!

That was super interesting and really helpful, thank you! I'm going to try that and see if it makes a difference, otherwise it sounds like I just need to visit an LC. Some of the ladies in the case studies went months with this!

Yay! Hope it does help. I use block feeding myself. Hopping it starts helping with his gas. Also I just realized I tryped "Good of luck". My brain has failed me.
3rd time with projectile vomiting. Each time has scared the shit out of me too! Last night I had him on the couch and after a burp it seriously looked like a days worth of food coming out of his mouth and nose. I have been exclusively feeding formula and pumped breast milk & it's probably resulting in him drinking way too fast even though the nipple mimics a breast and are "slow release". Can't anything just go right?! So frustrating!!!!!!
Has anyone had a baby straight up sleep through a feeding? I was up to feed M at 1:30am and she was so sleepy. She took the breast for a little bit and I gave her a bottle to finish her off and she couldn't take any of it. I undressed her, turned on the lights to try to wake her but she just wouldn't stay awake long enough to take a bottle. She was stirring around 4:40 so I gave her a bottle just now and she's out again. Yesterday was a busy day s f she didn't sleep much bc we were over my parents house and outside having dinner (it was hot out). Not sure if she's dehydrated or just tired from a busy day. She's had plenty of pee diapers and ate well at 9pm before bed yesterday.
@sboston06 My little guy sleeps through feedings at night on a regular basis. I basically beg and plead for him to eat something before he goes back to bed. I think sometimes they are just sleepy too
@sboston06 - I wouldn't worry too much about dehydration if she's still making lots of diapers. Mine gets super sleepy too and it's nearly impossible to wake her up
@sboston06 my pedi has me waiting until LO wakes up at night to feed him. Because he has gained weight at a good rate, he told me I can stop waking him at night to feed. I put him to bed at 1030 and he wakes me up anywhere between 230-430am to feed. Maybe something worth asking about. Your LO might not need that feeding anymore.
Thanks ladies! The pedi has us waking her every 4hr instead of every 3hr but she has been gaining well since we've started supplementing. I won't worry too much since it seems to be common. Of course I'm happy she sleeps well (for now) but will always find something to worry about!
@setosh I have had occasional spit ups with LO where it is quite a bit. Sometimes it comes out of his nose a bit too. However, my first son spit up so much it was frustrating. Until he was about 6 months I wondered if he was even getting any of the formula! He gained weight so it was ok, but we would go through 5 or more outfits a day, he smelled terrible, and it was just flat out frustrating. He was happy though, and the doctor was never too concerned. I did try to switch to a formula for sensitivity, but nothing ever helped. I wouldn't worry about it too much unless it persists or LO looks upset and is in pain. Could have been an air bubble/ needed to burp more.
@winnie1122 UGH! Oversupply.... I feel your pain I really do. I'm struggling too. I actually pumped 15 ounces a few weeks ago in about 15 minutes and I didn't even empty the breast... no joke. I had to stop nursing DD because she was having really horrible gas and super runny mucousy poops (a typically sign of too much foremilk). I decided enough is enough when the diaper rash she had, because of her constant acidic bowel movements, started bleeding. I seriously was bawling crying and I felt like I was poisoning my baby . Anyways.... what I have been doing is feeding her formula and pumping very very little, just enough to relieve the pressure so that my supply decreases dramatically. Eventually when the constant engorgement went away I started pumping the amount I was feeding her in formula. I even started going longer stretches between pumping sessions to try and dramatically decrease my supply. Unfortunately because she is having a reaction from too much foremilk I had to dump everything I was pumping... which was the worst part of all of this. If you lo isn't have a reaction to your milk than I would think you could still use what you pump. I finally feel (after about 2 weeks of doing this) that my supply is evening out. Today I am going to try and feed her my breast milk exclusively and see it helps her. Just fyi this is not based off of any advice from a LC or pedi just my own experimenting, nothing that anyone else has suggested has worked... so this is my last attempt at trying to even things out. To be honest I have no idea if this is good advice or not... so take it or leave it, but it seems to be working for me. My supply is WAY lower than it was.
@tennisbabymama DD preferred one breast because it was faster. She would get mad waiting for let down. This LO is a sleepy/lazy eater and prefers the other. He freaks out when the milk is too fast. May be different production or letdown between the two. Otherwise, baby may prefer a particular position. Pay attention to if baby prefers turning it tilting the head a certain way in general. My DD is in physical therapy for a pretty common neck issue.
@schaze So I hear, mine didn't until months after DD weaned. It is worse in the beginning though. I slept with a nursing bra and pads for 15 months though because I couldn't stand dripping on my shirt or sheets.
Does anyone have the Freemie Equality manual pump? If it works like the description says it does, I would love to get this to use for long car rides or days when we end up being out for longer than I thought. I have a manual pump left over from my oldest that I can use, but the idea of pumping both sides at the same time seems great.
@tennisbabymama LO hates my left side because of slower flow/lower supply. I think because he sometimes refuses to nurse on that side of only perpetuates the unevenness. I tried pumping the left side to see if I could increase supply on that side but when I pump that side by itself I get NOTHING. I can only pump that side if I am pumping both sides, which doesn't help to even them out! Ugh.
@rnyland1 have you tried pumping that side while LO nurses on the other side? I've had some luck with that because my right side seems to have had a lower supply and I wasn't able to pump a lot from it until I tried that. They seem to be getting more even now.

Guess I'll have to try that next! Thanks for the advice.
Anyone's LO spit up A LOT? Particularly at night, she will spit up like 10 times after each feed. I try to hold her upright for a while after but sometimes I fall asleep if it's the middle of the night. Doesn't seem to bother her but it's like a constant flow of spit up it seems for up to an hour. Anyone have any tips/tricks?

My LO spits up at least once at each feeding or about 30 mins after. I find he spits up more often if I burp him after. I only burp him between breasts or if he has a bottle because he does great if he just falls asleep everything seems to stay put. I think every baby is different but burping and having them upright after feedings will probably help.
Is everyone still using an app to track feedings and diapers? We are almost 3 weeks PP and I'm starting to get lazy with it and I'm not sure if it's really something I should keep up with.

@DeriveMyPi I still track feedings at 3 weeks PP, not length but start times and side. I'm finding myself more OCD this time around with keeping track. It helps me know when he will want to eat again and which side but that's about it. If your LO is gaining weight and having enough diapers Ibdon't think it's necessary, just preference.
@DeriveMyPi I never used an app but I tracked on paper until our first pedi appt. I stopped formally tracking after that. He's gaining well and has plenty of dirty diapers and we feed on demand so I feel good about it.
@DeriveMyPi I'm still tracking at 2 weeks PP. my LO hasn't had a consistent streak of weight gains so I feel better about keeping track until she does.
@DeriveMyPi I am at 4.5 weeks PP am still using the MyMedela app to track. I find it really helpful to see when he naturally likes to eat, how long he eats...it lets me know when he's going through a change or growth spurt.
@DeriveMyPi I'm still tracking but basically because I'd like to get him on a routine some time soon, i like to make sure he doesn't go past 3 hours during the day so i can eventually get him to sleep better at night..
@DeriveMyPi I never used an app. I have a hair tie I wear on my wrist to keep track of which side and set an alarm on my phone for when to wake him next if he hasn't eaten by then.
@mnkenned Is she gaining weight well? Sounds excessive, but if she's not bothered and gaining weight, doctors will say it's not a problem. Holding upright and burping are the best ways to help, but some babies spit up a lot more than others no matter what. DD had ugly reflux and was miserable so she was medicated for it. Even this LO, who compared to DD seems to hardly spit up, will spit up almost every time I lay him down if I can't get him to burp first.
@DeriveMyPi We stopped tracking after day 5, but mostly because he was having plenty of wet/dirty diapers and we feed on demand. I didn't feel like it was helpful for me personally though, so I didn't feel the need to keep up with it.

After her weight check last week (at 13 days) I stopped. She was back to birth weight. We did a weighted feeding yesterday with the LC, she she's been gaining an ounce a day for a couple weeks now. Which they said is great.
Elijah has been taking boob for the majority of his feedings and one bottle at night from my husband for about 6 of his 7.5 weeks of life. Until yesterday. He's refusing the bottle now. Thoughts/suggestions on how to get him to take the bottle again? We thought it was as a temperature issue so we're now making sure the bottle is warm. But today that didn't work. Kudos to you ladies EBFing. I didn't realize how awesome one break could be. Until I stopped getting it....

Anyone still having latch issues at 5 weeks? My nipples are sore still. Not raw or broken, but latching is definitely painful still.
