Postpartum recovery questions and rants

Re: Postpartum recovery questions and rants

  • I had pp pre eclampsia and had to go back and stay in the hospital overnight four days after having DS.  I had pretty bad swelling in my feet, but the doctors and midwives said that swelling isn't the best indicator of the disease and by the time my bps got really high, my swelling had started to go down already.

The other symptoms besides high bp (the highest mine got was 175/96) for me were:  slight headache, but more of just a gross foggy headed feeling, dizziness and pain in my liver because my enzyme levels went way above normal.  I never spilled protein in my urine or had severe headaches or vision problems.  I didn't even realize how terrible I was feeling until they put me on blood pressure Meds by iv in the er and the room stopped spinning and my brain woke up haha.  I thought I was just tired from having a newborn and giving birth.  The only treatment I'm on is meds for the blood pressure, which is starting to go down again now that I'm almost three weeks pp.  The ob said with pp preeclampsia, bp tends to peak 4-5 days after birth and then slowly equalize.

Hey all! I'm 11 days pp and having some issues that I can't seem to figure out via google (terrible idea, I know!). I do have an appointment tomorrow afternoon. I was just hoping someone here maybe could help me relax until then!

I had an epidural and subsequent catheter during labor. My labor was somewhat intense, though smooth (four hours of active pushing, a 2nd and 3rd degree tear). After labor, I was unable to urinate for about 24 hours, resulting in me needing a second catheter.

Eventually, I was able to urinate and was discharged.

Fast forward to now. I am still bleeding (which I think is pretty standard), but the blood is pretty freshly red and seems to be coming from my urethra area more than my vagina. When I dab/wipe myself after peeing, I feel super sore, like I've been punched. This is all more noticeable near my urethra than my vagina.

I've had my fair share of UTIs and this doesn't feel like one. There is no burning or frequent urination. Anyone have any experience with anything like this? Or have any ideas what could be going on? I'm so nervous that I've permanently damaged my bladder and this is just going to be my life from now on. :(

    Thanks ladies!

Make sure to use the peri bottle they gave and be gentle with that area. My urethra area hurt for awhile and felt bruised almost. That can be common after a catheter (especially since you had two placed). Definitely bring it up to doctor but hopefully it is just normal.
  • Anyone have a tear start stinging/ feeling painful or itchy again after it had stopped hurting?

I had a 2nd degree tear and another surface/"skid mark" tear on the other side that didn't need stitches.  The stitches one feels fine, but last week the surface one started painfully stinging again.  I took some saltwater sitz baths and it felt better, but now it's stinging a little again. My nurse MIL says there's not much else to do for it, but is it seriously going to take forever to heal?!  I'm almost six weeks pp.

So I've basically lost all my baby weight except for a few lbs, which I always had a range that I would fluctuate in, and my jeans just do not even come close to fitting.  My hips seem to have gotten wider.  Is that something that will shrink as well and I just need to give it more time or do your hips stay a little more open after kids and I should just go shopping for new jeans?
I got one of those hip wraps that are supposed to help with that in the 6-8weeks pp while you have relaxin in your system. Unfortunately they're very uncomfortable, so I plan to only wear it at night. The belly wraps however provide great back support AND work like spanx on a pp tummy.
Aha well if I still have a ways to go then I'll wait.  It's summer anyway so I don't wear jeans that often anyway.

No it worked out to be more like 7 weeks cause of my midwifes schedule.  I guess I've been doing a lot of activity.  Not working out, but I was on my hands and knees cleaning the floor yesterday before it started hurting again. I'll try to take it easier until my last appt with the midwife.
  • I still can't tell when my bladder is full. I can somewhat feel when I need to go use the bathroom but it's a toss up when it comes to the quantity.

I'm guessing this is the result of using a catheter during delivery? Anyone else experiencing this? I plan to bring it up at my 6wk appt.

If I wait too long I start to pee without warning... So great to be incontinent at 28! :#

I basically out myself on a toileting schedule and pee everything she eats to avoid issues... It has gotten much better now at 4 weeks PP but up until 2 weeks PP I was seriously concerned!!

  • @laurenm2123 I've taken to peeing every time my son eats too. Just gives me peace of mind! I'm 5wks pp so I was hoping this would be resolved by now.

Question for you and others who got their period on the earlier side, post partum. Was it really obvious that it was your period? I'm seeing what looks like it or at least spotting, after a couple of weeks of very tiny traces of blood. But it's not full on period and no cramps (my period cramps before pregnancy were awful)

I got mine the day after my 6 week check up and I usually have terrible cramps and didn't have any this time. I hadn't been bleeding for a couple weeks, but it was obvious that it was my period.

I've had a catheter with all my deliveries but didn't have the same is issue, keep in mind everyone is different. I would bring it up with your doctor just to check. How many weeks pp are you? Things get better after a while.
  • I'm a little over 5wks pp. Were you diligent about doing kegels during your pregnancy? I sure as hell wasn't so i wonder if that is why I am experiencing the bladder issue. I'll definitely mention it to my dr tho!
  • No I was so bad about it, I hate kegels with a passion. I have issues sometimes if I sneeze but it's not bad and I'm doing pelvic floor exercises, my doctor said it should get better with time also. I hope it improves soon for you!

Mine was obvious. I didn't have cramps, but I don't usually now that I am older (not since first baby). It was a normal duration and volume of bright red blood along with the emotional rollercoaster of periods for me. I also had nursing problems stemming from it, so I really didn't think it could be anything else.

  • For those of you who had your hoo-ha stitched up: when did they dissolve? I'm 1 month PP and can still feel them. Sort of surprised that my 6 week appointment is in a week and I still have stitches!

    QBF!

Mine took over four weeks, but I could never feel them.  DH was kind enough to take a look and appraise the situation.  Lucky him!

Mine had to be removed cause I got some scarring that got the stitches stuck.  She took them out 5 weeks pp.
  • @laurenm2123

i want to say mine went away at 5 weeks. I have yet to physically look down there, so i was purely going off of touch when showering.  My PP appointment is next week so we shall see how that goes.

Same here- I can feel them in the shower. I feel totally fine and am honestly sort of looking forward to being able to have sex next week but definitely will not if the stitches are still in!

Am I the only one who has no idea if they are healed or not? I haven't even tried to check, it never occurred to me to try. I figure I'll find out at my 6 week appointment

My stitches are from a c section but I still have a few left, at my 6 week appt they said it looked normal.
  • I thought I was all healed up this morning I felt a crusty spot were I was stitches up a big scab with stitches fell out and I'm 8 weeks pp tomorrow!! Crazy it took that long glad we hadn't tried to do the deed yet.

  • My stitches were gone by the middle of week 2 pp, which kind of concerned me. I haven't had any issues with that though so I suppose it worked out okay.
  • I had 3rd degree tearing during my delivery a month ago and some days I still have a lot of pain, but not where I would expect it. I experience it in my left leg crease. I braved a peek with a mirror and it looked red and kind of raw. Is it possible that I tore into my leg crease somehow? The rest of my vagina feels fine.

  • Anyone else getting bleeding after starting the mini pill? Not sure if it's a period or spotting?
Yes!!! I freaked out at first. I'm breast feeding and started the pill, so I assumed it would be awhile until I started my period again. I'm six weeks out, but had to be hospitalized two weeks ago for four days on IV antibiotics for a uterine infection and sepsis; so naturally I freaked out and called my OB worried that something was wrong. Totally normal...phew!

Does anyone still have line of nigra? I still have mine and my baby will be 8 weeks on Thursday.

And those of you having leaking bladder issues I'm 7 weeks  almost 8 PP and having same issues still when I workout in particular when I go running. I was bad with kegals while pregnant but I've been doing them now and I'm hoping it gets better with time.

i am 7 weeks PP and still have mine and it's still pretty dark.
  • Mine lasted over a year with DS.
  • Yep I wasn't sure if I was having a period or it was starting the mini pill guess I won't really know till next month.
yep 9 weeks pp here and still have my linea Nigrea but it's finally starting to fade.
The thing I'm most concerned about is this 2nd baby pooch I didn't have first go round. I'm breaking my belly bandit back out.

  • Yup, line still there.  Along with wrinkled skin and crazy stretch marks.  Other than that back to normal. Lol
  • I still have mine too - I don't think it looks any lighter.
  • The line always takes close to a year to go away for me.

  • ~~Question for those that had C section.~~  I'm just over 4 weeks pp and was doing great.  I wasn't sore and bleeding had stopped (I pushed for 2 hours before they said we had to go another route).  Yesterday though, I became sore again in incision area and had small amount of bleeding that was red.  Not much though. Still sore this morning.  Thinking I just over did it between full laundry baskets and putting stroller in/out back of 4runner.  Taking it easy with some ibuprofen next day or so but wondering if this is normal for soreness to come and go.
