Re: Postpartum recovery questions and rants

  • Not being able to take a bath until 6 weeks postpartum sucks. I just want to soak in a warm bath!!
If we can do sitz baths why not s regular one?  The water is just deeper.

My doctor said no sitz baths and no regular baths. He said because the cervix is still open it can just be an invitation for bacteria to get in. I know a lot of doctors recommend baths as part of pp recovery and a lot of hospitals help women who have just had a vaginal delivery to get in to the bath. Mine said no though and I figure I will just follow this recommendation rather than fight it. But a bath or even floating in a swimming pool would be AWESOME right now.

    Bummer!
  • Does anyone else feel the need to completely scratch their skin off?  The whole front of my torso is so itchy.  I feel like it may be hormone related because it gets worse when I am breastfeeding, but that is just a guess.
  • 17 days PP. gave birth to a 3.9kg boy, Vagina/perineal area still so sore but at least I am more mobile what with my body ache says goodbye thanks to a massage! And yes to dead animal smells - how can that come from my body?!

Did you have an epidural? Just asking cause I felt really itchy at some point during labor, specifically my boobs and stomach, and I guessed maybe it was the epidural..? But not really sure what caused it. It lasted a few hours after labor and, thankfully, went away. It was super annoying! Especially trying to scratch while holding/feeding a newborn.

I did have an epidural, but the itching set in the next day.  I do get contact dermatitis quite often and I guess I had attributed it to that early on because of sweating and being pretty gross in general PP.  I also had a bought of eczema on my breasts earlier this year.  No fun, but the itching seems to get worse while I am breastfeeding or right after.  I feel like I have massively dry skin in general though too.  I want my pregnancy skin back.. It was immaculate!  Oh well.
  • I'm 11 days PP, this is my second child, I had the same strong smell after my DD was born 2 years ago & it freaked me out so I went to get checked out & the culture came back negative for any infections, & my OB reassured me that it was normal & due to the bacteria in the blood & tissue. Maybe my bacteria is a little more funky than y'alls, lol.
You may just have a more heightened sense of smell, too. I have a super-sniffer, and I always think I smell super horrible, and no one else can seem to smell it, LOL.

  • How many of you postpartum moms used any sort of postpartum girdles? If so, what do you think of them and which one do you recommend?

I am still wearing maternity clothes. It's that awkward stage of "my old clothes don't really fit well, but I'm not pregnant anymore so I shouldn't wear maternity clothes".  I guess I need to go shopping for clothes that fit!  I'm curious if girdles really help...

Posted about this on the breastfeeding support thread, but anyone dealing with mastitis or ever had it? It hit me like a truck in the middle of the night and is absolute misery. OB prescribed antibiotics, I'm nursing still and massaging the lump, using cold and warm compresses before and after nursing, and taking Tylenol and ibuprofen for the body aches and fever. Any other suggestions on dealing wth this? I'm 18 days pp and dealing with constipation and hemmroids on top of this and want to crawl under a rock and not come out. It's just miserable.

What the heck auto correct?!? I'm editing the post above for clarity.  I think I was nursing and going on 2 hours of sleep when I posted this. But I'm certain I did correct these originally before posting.  I think the bump app ate my edits.

So sorry, I've had plugged ducts, but not mastitis.  OUCH.

Maybe there are some helpful ideas here:

    https://kellymom.com/bf/concerns/mother/mastitis/

In terms of the constipation - colace!!  I was suffering terribly last week, and just chowed down on colace - like two capsules three to four times per day.  And I found that rather than struggling/pushing to try and go, when I got the urge/cramps, I would just go sit on the toilet and let my body push on its own.  The pushing was too painful, and this actually seemed to work better.

And, lots and lots of water.  Dehydration can cause/worsen both mastitis and constipation, so drink, drink, drink.
  • @arteduc8
i posted about mastitis a page or 2 above. I had it this time and it came pretty quickly for me as well. My dr prescribed antibiotics on a mon and it took until thurs of the same week until I felt considerably better. How long have you been on them? I did the same as you when it came to nursing, Tylenol and massaging. Keep it up and hopefully you should feel better soon. If not, contact them again! Take care of yourself
  • Have a cold sore coming up and now I'm super paranoid about possibly spreading it to baby. Made the mistake of googling and the virus can be deadly in infants. Called the pediatricians office and the advice is to do what I normally do-lots of hand washing, no kissing, wash any thing that comes in contact with my mouth, etc. I get one about once to twice a year and had one while I was pregnant that I just let run its course (didn't want to take meds while pregnant). Am hoping this one passes by quickly and she doesn't catch it but it is STRESSFUL!

I'm in the same boat right now and it..is...miserable!!  My whole body aches and I've got chills on top of it.  Thankfully the clog seems to have gone away but I still feel like crap!

Anyone who says oversupply is a "good problem to have" hasn't had mastitis multiple times.

    Good luck!

  • Yesterday (11 days PP) I figured I could skip the pain meds and go about my day. Wrong!  By dinner time I felt like I had been horseback riding all day -- not fun!  Lots of pain/pressure in my lady parts and my butt/tailbone. So, don't skip the pain meds just yet!  I wonder how long this will last...
  • Is anyone else suffering from a severely itchy scalp?! I am 3 weeks postpartum and suffering from the worst itchy scalp and skin.
  • With my last delivery I was back to mild body weight exercises a couple of weeks out. And I had a rough delivery! This time I had a super easy delivery with the exception that my uterus prolapsed after I delivered the placenta. I can't even vacuum my house without the sharp stabbing pain in my lower abdomen returning! Ugh!

  • 8 days out and my episiotomy stitches are suddenly more itchy and painful than they had been. Looked in a mirror and don't see any discharge like anything is infected. Going to call doctor tomorrow morning but has anyone else had a similar issue? Doing sitz baths a few times a day, at least 2 showers, cleaning with water bottle and using tucks. I just hope a stitch isn't pulling out.

I had something like this and turns out I have some raised scarring and they have me on a three times a day hormone cream hoping that because it's still small that it will go down in two weeks.  If not then they will have to burn it off... ouch.
  • i occasionally have pain down there and I'm 1 month out tomorrow. It's usually after I've been to active, main cause is the stairs in my house and to the backyard. I also always had some pain right around when a stitch would come out, I got 7 and lost the final one a couple of days ago. My doctor did say I had a little bit of scarring from my previous deliveries but she didn't seem worried. It's a good idea to call your doctor just incase. I hope it gets better soon,

I had a third degree tear 2 weeks ago, and tonight I started feeling the same thing! I'm hoping it's just healing. Good luck!
  • My rant is the terrible pp night sweats. Waking up soaking wet to breastfeed is not a good feeling and I don't have time to shower everyday. I'm a month pp wonder when this will end. I read it can last longer in BF mommas.

  • PP night sweats...that's a thing?! Oh man that makes me feel so much better! I've been waking up absolutely soaked, no matter what the temperature or how many blankets I've shoved off me. I was worried I was getting sick or something.

I feel like I'd rather be hot at this point.  I feel so chilly in the night that I don't wanna get out of bed but I have to.  Grass is always greener I guess.
  • I'm getting annoyed with how many people keep telling me that I need to get out of the house. My son is 2 weeks old and I'm a ftm so I'm still learning. Don't rush me, I will eventually go out when I damn well please! I went shopping downtown for a couple of hrs by myself this week as it is but that isn't enough to some people I guess. We've also taken our son on a couple of errands as well.
  • So I've basically lost all my baby weight except for a few lbs, which I always had a range that I would fluctuate in, and my jeans just do not even come close to fitting.  My hips seem to have gotten wider.  Is that something that will shrink as well and I just need to give it more time or do your hips stay a little more open after kids and I should just go shopping for new jeans?

I got one of those hip wraps that are supposed to help with that in the 6-8weeks pp while you have relaxin in your system. Unfortunately they're very uncomfortable, so I plan to only wear it at night. The belly wraps however provide great back support AND work like spanx on a pp tummy.

Aha well if I still have a ways to go then I'll wait.  It's summer anyway so I don't wear jeans that often anyway.

Totally normal. I wait 6-8 weeks at least after having a baby to buy any new cloths.  Things just take a while to settle into place again. And sometimes shape ends up slightly different even if weight doesn't.

Yes it's totally normally. I had it with DS too totally sucks. It's your body's way of getting rid of all the extra fluid accumulated during pregnancy.

  • Ooh my goodness, the night sweats are awful! It's not as bad a month out, but I still wake up soaked at times.

Also, I'm almost back to my pre prego weight but have yet to try on my old jeans and such yet. Glad to hear that if they don't fit, I still have time. Fingers crossed because I have some jeans that I love!

  • So went to the doctor today to check why my stitches are suddenly so much more painful. They say everything looks fine and just to take it easy, she thinks I must have over exerted myself. I told her that I have had lots of help and mostly have just been on the sofa snuggling the new baby and breast feeding. She just told me to keep relaxing and doing everything I have been. Guess I just have to suck it up and home it doesn't get worse over the long weekend.
  • My butt is sore from sitting around doing nothing but feeding!!! Trying to get up and walk a bit in between feelings, but legs are still swollen AF from all the fluids they pumped into me!!! Today is day 4 pp, so you ladies give me hope that things will get better in the worst way!!! ;)

Watch your swelling! I was still swollen 8 days pp and it turned out it was most likely pp pre eclampsia. My bp never went over 140/90 and I never had vision or headache issues. If the swelling keeps up I would call your dr.

I was swollen for a little over a week. One day I looked down and I could actually see the bones in my foot and ankle. I had no blood pressure issues or other symptoms but I was told it would be worse because I was induced so the pitocin is given with large amounts of fluid and then I had a c-section and that also added fluid and I was getting antibiotics for group B strep which also added fluid. My ob told me it would be a while and I am glad he did. I was still using my at home bp cuff till the swelling went down because I am a hypochondriac. Never hurts to check in with the nurse and ask what's normal for your birth conditions.
  • My BP is around 115/60, so I guess the only way to know would be protein or blood work, if it was pp pre e? I talked to an advice nurse today and she said because of the pitocin induction, epidural, and subsequent csection it could take a week or TWO (woah, what?!) for swelling to go down. Didn't even think about pre e though! Good call - I'll be on the lookout for that. Did you have any other symptoms?

Just the bp for me. 140/90 is insanely high for me, I'm usually in like the low 100's over 60's or 70's which is why my dr thought it had been most likely the pp pre e, I think the vision and headaches are caused by the super high Bp's which thankfully mine never got to. The nurse practitioner at my GP's office but me on a diuretic/bp me's that thankfully cleared me out and brought the bp down.
