I am loving everyone's ideas here! We painted the now-office/soon-to-be-nursery a color called Filmy Green last year, so we're planning to keep that. It's gender neutral and light enough that I think it'll work with pretty much any decor. So I do have a question... I really like lavender and dark purple combined with light green walls and white furniture. I also really like bright colors and was thinking about doing a bunch of wall clings of safari animals, like this:
Does it make sense to have a set color palette for things like linens, curtains, etc. when we're planning to do such a wide variety of colors as accents? Or should I just go with "colorful animals" as the theme? I'm probably overthinking... but would appreciate thoughts from the experts
We are going with a dandelion theme for our little Bean! Currently the walls in the nursery are a light blue color, and DH wants to get some green paint to do meadows. The crib we are looking at is a dark wood and we are buying some dressers for cheap from his aunt (they'll need to be stained because they are maple, but they're in good shape and I think they'll look pretty nice when they're redone.) Have a glider on the registry that is espresso wood with dark gray cushions. I'm also looking at possibly having my mom make some curtains and cover a pillow for the glider for me in this fabric (https://www.amazon.com/Dear-Stella-Whisper-Dandelions-Fabric/dp/B01EIQ7ZI6/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1469363793&sr=8-3&keywords=dandelion+fabric) or something similar because I can't really find anything I like. The look I'm going for is subtle and not super girly, just enough that you know it's a girl's room! Will post updates once we get more done.
@ea301 i would probably pick 2 or 3 colors for the fabrics in the room. For DD1, her nursery was grey and pink with a teal accent (and monkeys). For her curtains, sheets, changing pad cover, and bedskirt we used pink, grey, and 1 monkey sheet that was white. It worked well to keep it simple. This DD has a blue and grey nursery with pink accents (and star wars) so we will stick with pink, grey, and blend for the fabric. Bonus....we will be reusing some of DD1's things.
We use sheer white curtains with pattern in all bedrooms here...so the only colored window covering is the valance. But we have nice wood blinds that actually do the light blocking so the curtains are more decorative.
Not yet but I am not looking to spend a ton of money on them. I need maybe one set of sheets since j have grey left over form ds and curtains so expensive as it is. I wanted room darkening but I may forgo that. Thank you!

I agree--curtains are one of those products that are WAY too expensive for what they are. We only have one window in the nursery, so I am going to try to make my own curtains for the nursery using this fabric from Amazon: If you have more than one or two windows, making curtains can get really expensive too (the fabric prices can be downright stupid), but for one we are saving AND getting what we want. Hopefully they don't look awful when I make them. XP
Also gonna put this decal, which reminds us of a little velveteen fox, on the wall: I painted the walls a light, springy green color, which will coordinate with lots of other colors, and we're going to have white furniture with the room's white trim. Also got this adorable rug from Amazon: Hard to tell which animal theme we're going with, right? :P
Curtains are expensive. The award for most expensive today goes to the curtains I liked in Buy Buy Baby. The valence and the two panels combined were like $300, which is more than the crib I'm planning on buying at Target. This is pretty though so I might try to replicate it somehow if Bean ends up being a girl.
@jenlynne0624 I looked for yellow at BBB just now and I did see some plain yellow sheets, you might see if they fit your needs.
Every time I see beautiful crib bedding like that I think... my what a shame the forth coming poospolsions and/or spit ups will be...
I have a unicorn of a DD...she never once poosploded or spit up in her crib. Nowhere else in the house/car/stores we went to were safe...but the crib was, and still is, her sacred ground haha. The one time she puked in the middle of the night she was kind enough to do it over the side of her crib onto the carpet.
Every time I see beautiful crib bedding like that I think... my what a shame the forth coming poospolsions and/or spit ups will be...
Yep! This is one reason we are not going all out on themed crib bedding and just doing sheets from Target and probably a crib skirt my grandmother will help me make. Then I won't be too upset when something gets dirty.
@cjt121413 - I'm way behind on this thread but Hobby Lobby has a ton of this decor in your preferred colors. I bought all of our decor from there.
Here's where the at... Glider is on its way, we just need a dresser that fits the closet (two cribs in a room makes for a tight fit with a dresser, glider and changing table). We ended up with a woodland theme as well. The end goal is to convince DH to put all 3 boys (when they're old enough) in our big bonus room. We can separate sleeping quarters from playroom in a room that size. DS' room is fishing/camping themed so I figured if I stayed close in decor most would transfer to a combined room. I think it would work wonderfully and we could still have an office/extra family room as well as a guest room.
@DiFazette - that's adorable! I'm so jealous of all of you who have rooms that you can turn into a nursery. We're not bothering because we'll probably buy a house a few months after baby is born and put it together there. I'm trying to pick out things that match on our registry but it's not working. I was initially trying for light blue and yellow but then DH convinced me to buy the dark teal glider so we'll have to see how well it matches with blue and yellow when it arrives.
I'm jealous of everyone that can hang art/stuff above their cribs. Living in California, it's been engrained in me my while life that beds don't go under windows and they don't get anything hung above them in case of earth quakes. I hang light things above my own bed, but wouldn't risk it over baby's crib. But the space looks do empty! I make get some of the vinyl wall sticky things.
I love seeing all of these! I doubt we'll even start on a room until Fall. We actually need to get a bed out of what is going to be the babies room, and over to my SIL's place before we can even think of what to do. Plus, finding homes for everything else we have in there (and the closet!) currently. That will be a job in itself.
But, definitely keeping the more neutral woodlands theme for our baby boy.

@Toller02 I'm considering ordering all the nursery bedding from etsy. Just don't know if it's worth the money yet. I'm sure they could make me something to match if I go that way. Honestly, in the 25 years I've lived in California, we've only had a few earthquakes. None that have knocked anything off a wall. But better safe than sorry I guess.
I won't even be starting our nursery until early October. I'm envious of you ladies that A) Have a plan for the nursery and have already started/finished said nursery. I'm waiting on SD2 (16) to choose a paint color for her room so we can get her updated before school starts at the end of August! Gotta love teenagers!
Okay, so I'm tentatively starting to register for things. In spite of reading, studying, making lists, etc. I still feel a little like I have I have no idea what I'm doing. I want to scan responsibly. On things like nursing pads, cloth diapers/liners, bottles, burp cloths, bum cream, and wipes how much of an item should I be scanning for?
I was having a lot of trouble coming up with a theme/finding bedding I liked. Found a custom set on Esty but it was more than I wanted to spend. Was ready to walk away but, Mom stepped in to save the day and volunteered to buy it
I love giraffes so I wanted them in there in some way. But also to keep with bright colors. Super excited to get both

Bottles I would not scan a ton of one type cuz babies can be picky. My first was not picky at all until we got to the sippy cup stage...then we tried every single type before she agreed with one. OMG.
Burp clothes: I would do 3 packs of Gerber cloth diapers prefold things. The "cute" ones don't absorb nearly as much.
Bum cream: I started with 2 tubs of aquaphor, a tube of it for each diaper bag, 3 tubes of butt paste (one in diaper bag), and 3 tubes of desitin. It does "expire" after a while...although I'm still using it on my 2 year old. Out of all that, in 26 months, I've only needed to buy more aquaphor. But DD never had big rash problems as we always changed her almost immediately after she peed or poo'd. We used aquaphor the most because she has severe excema and that kept it away from her booty.
Wipes: when DD was little we used a lot because they would serve as a bath after spit ups. Then when she started solids they were napkins. Now we still use them for hand face and butt wiping (not the same one obviously). I don't know if that's normal....we also use them on our butts sometimes. That said, we buy the big box of huggies at costco when they are on sale. I think it's 1000 Wipes. It lasts a few months. When DD was a newborn we bought the smaller refill packs and went through one pack a week or so. I like the Huggies wipes and it's all we use now. Best way to figure out your preference will be to buy a small pack of each and use them yourself. If they aren't thick enough, don't feel good, or burn your butt (pampers sensitive burned me so bad I would cry, no joke), then try something else. Of course, baby could be allergic to a different brand. DD never had issues with the fire pampers. Anyways....I would register for a few packs of each...you can always use them as face or hand wipes.
Also, register for some boogie wipes. Those are amazing for snotty noses and are gentler than most Wipes.
Since baby can't be in our room like I wanted I'm finally getting into this whole nursery thing. Since baby will go in the office/game room, we're doing a video game theme. My best friend's mom makes custom bedding, so the 3 of us are going fabric shopping this week. We moved the giant bookshelf in there into our room and have a few more things to move before there's enough room for the crib and a small dresser. And we have to figure out a way to put up the lightsaber since DH doesn't want to put holes in the wall.

@phoenix870509 we got this color changing light sabers night light thing...i don't remember if it came with command strips but that's how we attached it to our wall. It's been having in my toddlers room for a few months now...we are almost ready to put it in the baby's room.

We will have to try that. This one doesn't change colors (it's blue) and has a remote control to turn it off and on.

I have serious nursery envy! You guys all have such good eyes for interior decorating and baby-theming. LOVING all the woodland creature themes. Our nursery is in "progress", and by progress I mean it no longer looks like an office but instead like the aftermath of a tornado. Not a clue how to turn it into a bedroom. Ugh.
Some advice from my mom you STMs might be able to give some input on:
1) Don't get black-out curtains (as we had planned). You want Baby to be able to sleep in broad daylight as much as possible.
2) Don't get a Sleep Sheep or any other sound machine for the room. In fact, when Baby's really young be as loud as humanly possible when it is sleeping in order to make sure it doesn't always need complete silence to sleep in the years to come.
What are your thoughts on these? I appreciate her advice, but it's been 28 years since she had a baby at home.
@scatherine89 Totally with you in the sound machines. My two cousins have used them since birth. One is now about to go off to college and will be brining his sound machine to his dorm. I'm sure his roommates will be a huge fan of that...
I was thinking of getting blackout curtains though. Mostly for summer evenings when kids are going to sleep before the sun is down. But I see how they pretty much fall into the same logic as the sound machine...
@scatherine89 my Dad has always said the same thing about noise. He never tried to be quiet for either my sister (now 17) or myself (30). I'm not a STM but I wanted to say my parent said the same thing.
No black out curtains for us. It's a little harder to get DD down in the summer when the setting sun comes straight into her window, but it's never been a problem. We actually only have sheer white curtains.
Yes to the sleep sheep. We didn't have one until DD was about 6 weeks old and she was a junk sleeper. A sleep sheep helped so much. Now she has a sleep monkey. When she was Itty bitty we made lots of noise (even vacuumed her room during naps)...that doesn't help at night when the baby wakes up 7 million times and hasn't learned to self soothe....a sleep sheep does once they learn to turn it on. We also have a cd player in her room that plays bedtime music for 20 minutes at nap and bedtime...so...yeah.
Of course, I'm almost 30 and can't get to sleep without music or the tv on...but I didn't have a sound machine or music in my room as a kid. I'm just blessed as a junky sleeper. DH is the same way. All my siblings are the same.
I'm torn on the black out curtains. The baby's room is in the second story of our house and our neighbors behind us have an awful light that they leave on all night. It's so bright that even with the blinds closed it's like there's a light turned on in that room. If I don't go with blackout curtains I'll do something a little thicker than sheer curtains.

DS slept in our room, without blackout curtains, until 6mths old. However, we had blackouts in the nursery before he was born and I'm glad - mostly bc it helps keep the heat out when the sun directly hits those windows. As for white noise, it was kinda the opposite. We had an air purifier in our room so he had white noise from the get-go but not in his room. For whatever all that is worth
