@nlane0723 I'm going to pack a newborn outfit and a 0-3 month outfit just in case he's a chunker. It won't take up that much extra space and it's better to be overly prepared!

@annabenanna - my husband and I watched it a couple months ago! Her special is on Netflix - freaking hilarious. And so made me wish for a minute that us ladies were still expected to just stay home... just for a minute!
While we're on the topic of carseats, my mother called me last Friday all excited to tell me that one of her customers gave her a carseat to use when she keeps Reagan. I was happy at first, but then I ran by her house to see it last night and it's old. I'm not sure exactly how old and I can't find a tag with an expiration date, but I'm almost certain it's expired.
I didn't express my concern last night, but do you guys think I should? I'm tempted just to buy her a carseat, but since we haven't asked her to keep Reagan nor will she be keeping her on a regular basis, I don't feel like it's my responsibility. What should I do?

Isn't she so funny? so honest and brutal too! "That's right bitches, everyone of you all has HPV!" LOL.
Absolutely. @copperboom86 I'm probably the farthest from a neurotic parent you could be, except when it comes to car seat safety (and vaccines, haha). If you cannot determine the expiration date, I would cut the straps and explain that it isn't a safe car seat. If you/she wants a seat, you could just get her an extra base for yours or a cheap seat.
@CopperBoom86 I say mentioning it to her isn't unreasonable. I actually didn't realize car seats expired when I had DD and saved hers in case I had another one. I started looking into using an old seat vs. buying a new one, and that's when I read that they do because of material breakdowns and whatnot. Maybe she just doesn't know that they expire? The seat I had with DD had slots to put the seat belt through, so we didn't even need a base when we left her grandparents or whatever because they could still hook her in; maybe yours has a similar feature that you could just leave your car seat with them?

I would buy an extra base (if you're using an infant seat) and leave that with her. Used seats are a huge red flag for safety.
And everyone else, look up Car Seats for the Littles (website, facebook, etc). They are THE experts on car seat safety.
Yeah, I've read up on carseat safety and how important those expiration dates are, which is why I was concerned. I just wasn't sure how to address it. It feels weird to correct or advise my own mother on infant safety. I'm not sure how to do it and not come off as disrespectful- like I know more than her about raising a kid when I don't even technically have one yet.
Your mother raised a child in the 80's (I'm assuming based off the 86 in your name). She raised you by 1980's standards. You are raising your child by 2016 standards. Do not feel bad. Two completely different ball games. Correct away. This will not be the first or last time this happens.
I would just say that expiration dates are very important now and you wouldn't feel comfortable using an expired seat. Especially one you don't know the history of (accident, correct care, etc.)
I had to give my mother and my MIL a lesson on proper car seat use. They may have been mothers before us, but so many things have changed since we were babies. @CopperBoom86
@CopperBoom86... echoing what everyone has said. Yes, you should definitely let her know about the concerns there. She obviously just doesn't know about regulations today or I'm sure she would have thought otherwise about it. Also, if it's one of the little car seats (vs the convertible), she's really not going to get use out of it because the seat will pretty much always be with the baby. She just needs a base.
Thanks you guys! I'm just going to have to suck it up and address the issue with her. The most important thing is that my baby is not riding in that carseat. If I hurt her feelings or piss her off, she'll just have to deal.
@copperboom86 - You could always use the base/carseat as a trade in for babies r us. They have the trade in event two times a year. I agree with everyone else with the whole safety first, especially if you don't have all the details with it being used.
Are any of you packing an empty bag/reusable grocery bag for all the extras the nurses give you from your hospital room? I'm thinking like all the pads, etc. that you can take from your room before you leave.
On my last BMB there was a grandmother who had saved her *adult daughter's* carseat (from the 80's) in anticipation of using it with the grandbaby. Needless to say, some education was given to grandma about car seat safety.
@CopperBoom86 I had to have the safety talk with my mom about her using our crib at her house. Our crib being the one she used with me and my brothers in the 80s/early90s. I nixed that real quick and told her I was fine to bring/send the PNP or she can buy a crib if she really wants to. We will see what she does.
Im getting my infant seat and bases from a friend. I know the seat hasn't been in an accident and the kid growing out of them is just over a year old (just grew out of his infant carrier) so the expiration shouldn't be an issue.
@Piperella Yes I am packing an empty bag for hospital freebies. Since my good friend is a nurse in L&D, she's going to grab me a ton of extras!

I don't think you can see mods unless you're in the group. That group popped up weeks ago and has had no activity so I assumed it was someone who didn't know how TB worked.
