Re: July Randoms Thread

  • Just caught up on 100 posts since I was at a scheduled ob appointment this afternoon.

Can't remember much, laughed out loud to ruby booby. I look forward to calling cooper, Cooper pooper... let's hope he doesn't shart himself in middle school or something else traumatic.

And apparently I can't remember anything. Tomorrow is my day off so I'll be behind again but I adore you all and will read along when I can!

  • @RN1stBae my FI is in landscaping and he get tips all the time-sometimes big ones , so I'm sure the guy thought it was a tip.
I know my guy would feel really embarrassed if he took it in error so I would just pay the 45 from here on out

  • @ajn092 my friends recommended that book/DVD to us. I put it on our registry but I assume we will buy it after my shower.
  • @ajn092 I've heard nothing but great things about that book from my mom friends!
And they just told us about it in our birthing class too so I'm sure it works

  • Tonight we had a "practice" labor during birthing class and let me tell you

I am really excited but really scared and i just have so many emotions.

plus one of the moms sisters just had her baby at 33 weeks. FI looked at me and was like omg your almost 33 weeks--can you imagine?
    Uh no!!

  • I'm super late on this, but we hung McKenna's comforter on the glider. Now that the glider is in our room, it just sits on her laundry hamper. Yeah, I'm lazy that way.

Not sure where we are going to put Layla's comforter since we are leaving the glider in our room this time. Hanging it on the wall is definitely a cute option.

@Megan324 glad to know it's recommended in birthing classes. If they like it then it must be good stuff!

@RedMar I can't wait to try out the Aden & A swaddles. Will def be bringing those to the hospital. The video recommended regular square swaddles but we also got a couple Swaddle Me's and a Woombie. I'm hoping those work just as well. I love me some baby burritos!

and I actually wasn't as freaked as I thought I would be.

And def second on the we have no idea what it's really like. I feel a bit more prepared but how prepared can you really be?

  • RE swaddles, I love the A+A blankets, we have like 100 of them, but both of my babies could break out of them in the first few weeks. The Swaddle Me's with the Velcro were life changing.
  • @mojiejo, there's no such thing as going overboard on wraps :)
  • @fireflygirl12 Tell my husband and mom that.

I believe it, though.  At least I won't find myself in a situation where my only carrier(s) are dirty or in the wash.  I've got too many for that!

I didn't think it was possible but this thread moves faster every single day! Should we move to weekly random threads? Just a thought...

DH and I just finished watching the Happiest Baby on the Block DVD. I saw on another BMB that the video does a good job of covering the fundamentals without too much repetition that is in the book. The video shows baby after baby crying and fussy and is quickly soothed with the 5s' - if it even takes all 5. I can't wait to try it out on my little guy. And I really hope it actually works. Any STM+ use these techniques?
Yes. I read the book and watched the DVD and the techniques are better understood being watched any way. I reccomend the DVD over the book for sure. Did you enjoy the HORRIBLE MUSIC?! Dr. Harvey Karp himself wrote and sang it! Check the credits!

Anyway, I ended up watching the DVD at the tail end of its usefulness for us, but I would still say it was very helpful. Not the magic cure all it appears to be, but definitely some good things to add to the bag of tricks.

Rent the DVD from your library. It's like a half hour long.

  • Swaddle mes are great and also Carters makes a nice stretchy swaddle blanket that we used a lot at first

Then we started "super swaddling" with a receiving blanket and an A&A blanket. Great technique for any baby houdinis.

Basically you you fold the receiving blanket up into quarters lengthwise so it is a long strip and you put it on top of the regular swaddle blanket across where the torso goes. Then you wrap the blanket around the arm and tuck it under the baby's body on each side. Then swaddle like normal. There are several good videos on YouTube

  • @ajn can't remember numbers... we love the 5 s technique. It very often worked, and if not we would start them again. Really just didn't work during his 6-7 witching hour, but you get used to walking laps and/or drowning out the noise Hahaha.

We love a+a swaddle blankets but my husband preferred easy swaddles instead. Just put a few new a+a easy swaddled on the registry since we only have mediums or larges at home (my kid was swaddled until 6 or 7 months).

  • Speaking of swaddling, sleep sacks etc. my sis in law still puts my neice who will be two in October in a sleep sack when she sleeps. Do any of you other mamas do that? I thought she might be a little too old for that but that's just my opinion? I mean, my neice I guess doesn't mind it. Although, when she sees my sil bring out the sack she kind of freaks out.

  • PSA for A & A.  My Target has a bunch of A & A stuff on clearance.  I got a 4 pack of swaddles for 50% off.  We had 4 with my first and I loved them and may have misplaced one over that time so I wanted a second pack (I can't believe how many some of you have! Lol!)  They also have the drooly bibs (like, tons at mine) that on clearance + 20% off cartwheel coupon came down to $4 for two of them.

@seitzy3 Is it so she doesn't get out of bed at night?   What's the reasoning?  I could understand why your niece fights it.  At that age you need to be able to move to get comfortable.  I feel like it would be too confining for me.
  • @seitzy3 I know someone that puts her 2'year old in a sac, but not the kind with the arm wrap. It's just a vest, but the bottom is a sac...I guess so she doesn't wiggle the blanket off at night? Not sure but I feel bad for your niece, that's nightmare inducing.

With the A&A swaddle blankets, there is a difference if you buy them for Target or if you buy them from a boutique. I much prefer the boutique, they're bigger and softer.

There are sleep sacks for older kids with holes for the feet. They're really funny. My daughter still had one through the winter before the turned two I think because our house was cold and she didn't keep a blanket on her.

@seitzy3 we did the sleep sacks up until DS was about 20mos. They were the vest kind and mainly did it so he'd have a blanket on during the winter months. Plus he LOVED being swaddled as a LO, so it was a good transition from that!

It's not weird at all assuming it's the kind where the child's arms are free. They are still too young to pull a blanket up over themselves at that age. I also know some kids who are little strippers and a sleep sack helps keep their clothes on at night.

We we got out of the sleep sacks around 18 months, when the next size up had holes for feet we abandoned ship. But putting on the sleep sack had always been part of the bedtime routine and my child is very routine oriented.

  • Ooohhh yeah. My niece doesn't have a blanket and she is in the one with no arm holes but her feet her zipped up. SIL said it's because she doesn't want her to learn to get out of the crib, but she has never tried before just bc she has always been in the sac. I was told she freaks out because she doesn't like "night night" time not because of the sac. But I guess if you have been in it your whole life you wouldn't know any better haha!

  • @KimmySchmidt yeah my girls don't like to shy away from their routine either. Both of them have their special blankies they use for bedtime. But now reading all your comments I get why you would keep them in the sack until they are a little older

Hmmm...Gap sells A&A swaddles, with designs specific to them.  They're much more expensive than the ones in regular retail stores.  I wonder if they're the bigger ones, too?

ETA: They ARE bigger....now I'm intrigued!

  • @bibliobebe Watching a birthing video also freaked me out, and my first one was in my childbirth class. I was like you, it moved me. I cried and couldn't wait until it was me having my baby and meeting her for the first time.

Re swaddling- We had three different swaddlers, but McKenna only liked being swaddled in A&A blankets. We swaddled her until she was 7-8 months old. Started leaving her arms out around 3 months. I'll try the swaddlers again with this baby... hoping we may get some use out of them. But also buying more A&A blankets.
