I had several people suggest that Summer Infant swaddle with the Velcro but Lucine ends up squirming down into them with her face fully covered like PPs said, or her hands pop out the top in what looks like a very uncomfortable position. We changed to the zippered Love to Dream swaddle with wings I linked and she had no squirm issues. In fact she looks super cute in it!
It only took me 3 days to catch up on this thread now that I finally have a newborn and I just want to say thank you! So many of my questions have been answered in this thread and tons of great advice!
Thank you to those who recommended the Love to Dream swaddle! We got ours yesterday and he squirmed & struggled much less through the night! Got several good 2 hour stretches of sleep. Highly recommend over SwaddleMe!
Is anyone else's LO having that phlegmy sort of breathing? Like they've got something in their chest they just need to cough up but can't (no phlegm in her nose/sinuses as far as we can tell).
We called the pedi and were told that it's completely normal, but it's really hard to hear Emily breathe like that. We have an appointment on Wednesday, but in the meantime: have/are any of you dealing with this, and do you have any suggestions for helping clear it?

Yes! DH thought Ezra was sick because of it! I notice it's better if he's sleeping on his side rather than his back. I make sure to check on him a bit more if he's doing that but I think he's just sort of snoring.

I hope it's just snoring! Though DH and his family are champion snorers, so I shouldn't be surprised...it just sounds so phlegmy and a little scary.

Yep us too. It's pretty normal. Their airways and nasal passages are really narrow, that's all it is. My dad is a family doc and said its nothing to worry about unless they're having obvious difficulty breathing. I swear my LO inhales milk sometimes because she eats like she hasn't eaten in a week!

I'm so glad we're not alone in this. I've been afraid for even grandparents to be around because she sounds sick. Our pedi kindly brushed off my concerns but I've still been anxious about it.
Ok I have my first legit concern (obviously coming to a head on a Saturday morning for convenience). I knew that babies can have swollen breast tissue from mom's hormones - but my baby girl has serious hard lumps. I've read not to touch them, but I'm just wondering when it's a problem?? Does anyone know from experience. They're not red, oozing or infected.
This is probably stupid but my mom brought it up and it made me all paranoid. Then I had to google it and came up on this. Is cell phone radiation being harmful to babies ....really a thing?
if so, my LO is so screwed. I had my cell phone with me since Day 1 and I play with my phone all the time near him.

This is normal - both of my kids have had hard lumps and both times the pedi said it was to be expected. Don't worry!

Same with my pedi... Also, he said don't be alarmed if she has a little period - you should've seen my husbands face lol! He wasn't expecting to hear about boobs and periods for another 13 years

What. The. What. Oh dear. I've never heard that!!!

Kirra has cephalohematoma from the vaccum used to assist her birth and we were told that as long as the bump didn't get worse that it would go away in a month or two. Has anyone else had an LO with this? How long did it take to go away? I'm going to talk to her pediatrician about it more but I'm terrified of changing her clothes because pressure on the site can cause an infection, so I was told.
If DS falls asleep after nursing I put him down to sleep. If he's fussy I'll burp him and he'll usually fall asleep on my chest. Sometimes he will burp once but not always. My mil says I need him to burp 2 or 3 times. Is this true? Should I wake him up to burp? That seams to start the nursing cycle all over before he will sleep. He's BF with no bottle yet.
We are going through the witching hour and cluster feeding phase so I assumed the fussing was related to that not trapped gas since the rest of the day he will fall asleep fine without a burp. DH thinks he should be burped more.
@Lusitano8 generally ebf babies burp less because they take in far less air (assuming the latch is good). Often babies will fuss or spit up if there's trapped air-- if he's going right back to sleep just fine, I'd say you're right.

Like PP have said, EBF babies don't need to burp as often. Sometimes Ezra doesn't burp but he farts a little and I count it. If your baby is relaxed they're okay
@Lusitano8, 6 weeks pp here and EBF. We burp everytime LO pulls away from the breast and sometimes we get a burp and other times we don't. But he has issues with air because he's an easily distracted feeder.
STM's this ones for you... ezra, DH, and I are going on a 3 hour car ride tomorrow. Ezra does really great in the car (once you get him in) and I'm sure he'd let me know if he was hungry but I'm wondering if I should let him out at some point to stretch or change positions or if it's okay to leave your baby in the car seat for 3 hours (if he's eaten and clean and sleeping he could go that long before needing me again).
@JoMunson as long as the car seat is properly installed, baby is properly strapped in, and their head and neck are supported to ensure the airways aren't blocked there's no reason they can't be in the car seat for travel for 3 hours. They might not want to be in it for 3 hours at this point but if they're in it correctly it's safe. Also if it's hot out make sure he's not overheating. Car seats tend to be warmer and less breathable. Good luck!

What is this like?? Do you sleep more? Is life better??
@Mslan, I feel like I shouldn't answer this question because I've read your posts and know things have been really tough for you. Honestly, Friday night to Saturday was amazing. LO slept for 4 hrs, fed, then went back to sleep for another 4 hrs before feeding again.
Saturday night to today was somewhat different... LO slept for an hour, then fed, then slept for 1.5 hours and is now feeding again. I'm hoping this was a fluke because we've had major storms all night with lightning lighting up the house constantly and thunder crashing for hours on end now. I could barely sleep! (Although apparently DH can sleep through the damn huns attacking outside.)
4hrs is honestly the longest we've ever gotten over night and frankly, I'm thrilled with that! Up until now, I've been in camp 2 hrs or less of sleep per night. Hang in there and know you can and will get through it! Mommas with fussy, non sleeping babies of the world unite!
@lbachran 4 hours would be amazing. DH has now taken over the night shift. I feel really bad about it since he gets up to go to work at 4 AM, which means he's on shift from like 10-4 and then goes to work from 5-330, but it helps out so much. I can sleep and then I've also promised my mom that I will leave the house every day, if even just to go outside and walk around. Those two things have been making my life much easier. Coffee and I have also developed the relationship we had when I was in law school.
@Mslan, kudos to your DH! Mmmm...caffeine. I bought some caffeine free soda because I'm getting sick of water and lie to myself about the energy they're giving me when I drink them. I miss caffeine, but I'm terrified it will make his funky sleeping schedule worse. Have some coffee for me...yum. I'll let you know if the magic of 6 weeks kicks in again. (If not, he was born at 37 weeks, so maybe he's just running a little late.)

I've been fearful of caffeine too but caved and had a small cup of coffee yesterday at 7AM and it was delightful but LO was definitely fussier. I'll only have it very rarely if I need if, big bummer!
I love this thread btw! I'm enjoying asking you all questions bc usually I text my mom and ole girls anxiety is on high! I feel like I can avoid a spike in her nervousness by just avoiding that route!
ok we have been discussing how EBF babes don't burp as much - on the rare occasion mine does burp, sometimes milk comes out her nose? I don't remember this, so therefore I'm asking, is this normal??

This happened to DS sometimes especially if he ate really quickly. Our pediatrician said it's no big deal.
I'm not sure about the caffeine thing. I was an avid black tea drinker until Ezra came and now I do one cup a day. I don't wait to breastfeed Ezra after drinking the coffee but I haven't noticed any change in his behavior (except he's more awake during the day, but then again he's also almost a month old so he should be).
PP who are saying their LOs are sensitive to caffeine, did you drink caffeine during your pregnancy? I drank at least a cup Monday through Friday, so I don't really notice a difference with the baby.
I drank coffee in the morning and occasionally in the afternoon while pregnant. I do the same thing now, and I don't notice any difference. Things like caffeine and alcohol peak in your breastmilk similar to how they peak in you. I don't worry about caffeine and waiting it out, but I do enjoy a glass of wine from time to time in the evening that I wait out. I start drinking it as soon as she's done and wait 2 hours to feed her again. I use the alcohol strips to test before feeding, and they always come back negative. I notice no difference in those feeds either.
If you have a 2-3 hour feeder, then you could probably start drinking coffee at the tail end of your feed and by the time you go to feed your LO next time, the caffeine shouldn't be in your milk anymore. But I'm not a doctor - this is all info I've learned from kellymom and other breastfeeding resources.

@That1didntcount, yup, pediatrician said it was normal. It's just rather gross when they sneeze it into your hair. Yuck...
