Harper is still really hairy- shoulders and back are covered in dark hair. How long until it normally sheds off? Also, I have that horrible stomachs line.. Again, how long until that normally goes away?

DS's excess dark hair was gone by 2-3 months (now it's just short blonde fuzz). I still have my linea negra too. I was able to exfoliate it away by 2mo last time.
  • Just to keep it real, I drank too much caffeine while pregnant, and drink too much caffeine nursing. I don't notice a difference but I also go to non caffeinated beverages after 7 b

PP who are saying their LOs are sensitive to caffeine, did you drink caffeine during your pregnancy? I drank at least a cup Monday through Friday, so I don't really notice a difference with the baby.
I had a cup of coffee every day while pregnant. I should have included it was a frappe and I hardly ever eat dairy so it was probably a combination.
  • I rarely drank any caffeine while I was pregnant but it doesn't seem to affect DD at all.
    Same here.
  • LO is getting shots at 1 month, MIL and BIL (who is a paramedic) told me to give LO infant Tylenol 30 minutes before he goes to prevent the fever afterwards. How much do I give?! Isn't he too little to have medication right now? I can't find the right dosage on Tylenol's website. Anyone have experience with this?

Our pedi doesn't start vaccines until the two month visit but I recall not using Tylenol until after that based on their guidance when DS1 was born in 2014. It very well could have changed since then, when he was born they were rolling out the new dosing instructions based on weight versus age.

I have heard that you shouldn't pre-dose ahead of vaccines though, that it supposedly lowers the efficacy but that could be an old wives tale. I've never felt it necessary to do it. Just be prepared to feed your LO right after the vaccines, that's usually the best comfort anyway.
  • My pedi told us zero medications at this point and we also don't see him next until LO is 2 months old. I'd hold off just to be safe since it seems like your BIL wants you to use it as a preventative thing versus necessary.
  • Thanks ladies! I just looked up the AAP 2016 schedule and it looks like they're giving the 2nd dose of Hep B to him at 1 month. They probably want to check his jaundice and weight too since he had to get treatment for it, so that's why we're going in at 1 month.

So that brings me to another question, any other tips or tricks for soothing a baby more than just feeding? I think if I felt him with a fever, it'll just break my heart :( I definitely want to avoid medication until their little bodies can handle it. I might ask the pedi a quick question about it, for curiosity.
  • @tgortney I find swaddling and saying "shh" while rocking helps. Our medicine ball is really the sweet spot but I don't think that would be a normal thing to bring into the doctors office
  • I had a coffee or tea several times/ week while pregnant. My coffee intake has increased since LOs arrival not because of sleep but because coffee works better for me then colace. I usually have a cup of iced coffee every morning while I feed LO and I haven't noticed any changes in her behavior.

We bounce him on my labor ball. If he's fed, changed, and we tried the paci but he's still upset we do the ball and he loves it!
  • I just need to vent. My LO is a month old and cannot be held or soothed by anyone other than me for more than 10 mins without crying hysterically, not even her daddy. He is wonderful about it and doesn't take her preference personally but I am so exhausted and really wish he could help more. He offers to hold her and help all the time but if she's calm when he takes her she inevitably gets upset and if she's upset when he takes her she becomes hysterical. I'm wearing her as much as I can but its so hard to do anything for myself (literally Im wearing her when I go to the bathroom), I'm taking 5 minute showers and haven't dried my hair since she was born because I can't stand hearing her cry and cry for me. I feel bad when relatives come to visit because they all want to hold her but she doesn't tolerate it for more than just a few mins. I'm not willing to let her cry hysterically for more than a few moments and I'm not ready to introduce a bottle yet. I keep trying with pacis but she just gets offended. I know that this is very common and our bond is very meaningful and powerful but it's just so tiring and my back is killing me. I feel like I'll never be able to leave her with anyone and I'm already dreading going back to work in two months.

Oh @LadySamLady that sounds exhausting. With DS I found it helped to get DH situated in the wrap and just have him go walk and pat his bum. It helped them find their groove, and to be honest, if DS was flipping out I didn't have to hear it while I soaked my stitches in the tub.

  • DS is 5 weeks today and still trying to eat hourly most of the day. He is gaining weight great, but my concern is he is snacking instead of taking a full meal. It's not that he always falls asleep-- how can I encourage him to take more so I get a little of a break in between?
  • Does anyone's LO eat so fast that they wind up coughing and gasping for air? It's the scariest thing I've ever seen and it's been happening at almost every feeding. My husband and I have tried various ways of holding him while he eats and nothing seems to help. Can anyone relate? If so- any tricks to stop this from happening?

@LadySamLady,  so I'm not the only one wearing LO to the toilet? My mother and grandmother alternate coming to help me while DH is at work so I can at least shower and eat. He screams with my grandmother. I've heard him howl through the monitor for half an hour while showering, but I have to remind myself he's being cared for by someone who loves him and won't allow harm to come to him. And sometimes I just have to turn off the monitor. I've learned daily survival alone is contingent on showering, eating, and drinking. Having a high needs baby is hard, accept help whenever you can and know LO will be ok.

@LadySamLady I wonder if its something around this time because LO is increasingly getting more and more attached. Not just to me thankfully, but he won't sleep at night unless he's being held or is in my bed with me or MH super close to him so he can smell one of us. It's exhausting. I've taken to wearing him basically everywhere too.

Ezra will do this, especially if it's been awhile and I have a really forceful letdown. I haven't found a way to prevent it but when he pulls off to cough and choke I sit him upright or facing forward and tell him everything is okay. He usually only coughs once or twice and then wants back on the boob

Oh my goodness I'm so glad to hear I'm not alone. This is literally driving me insane!!! My LO doesn't take more than 90ml (3oz) in one feeding, she's also 5 weeks. During the day I don't mind but overnight I want more than 2 hours sleep!

Today I've tried increasing the nipple flow in case she's getting too tired by the end of the feed. Doesn't seem to have made a difference yet but we'll see.
  • This is probably a really stupid question, but what do you do with LO when they're awake? I swear my almost 3 week old just screams until I put her on the boob (where she just pacifies versus eats), even if it's only been an hour since she last ate. I'd rather stimulate her by doing other things but to avoid the blood curdling screams, I just let her latch and self soothe - 85% of the time she rejects pacifiers so that's not a great option.

I sit Harper up and let her look around. Or she goes in her swing. If she seems up for it we do tummy time or "play" on the activity mat. Shes still not awake a lot (more and more a bit every day though!). I talk to her all the time about random stuff as interaction.

Is anyone else dealing with a "happy spitter"? Anna spits up ALL THE TIME!! She is gaining weight and isn't fussy so my pediatrician isn't concerned but between all the spit up and my leaky boobs we both constantly smell like spoiled milk...  :/   I'm going through burp rags, onsies, and nursing tops like crazy right now.
  • @bellodomani @jomunson thanks ladies! It actually doesn't happen when I BF, it's only when I use the bottle. Suggesting the premi nipple sounds like a great idea, I am going to purchase one and see if it helps. He only only coughs a couple of times also- but he gasps for air when he does which is just horrifying. I sit up up immediately and pat him on his back and ask him if he's ok (like he can answer me lol). He recovers rather quickly and is looking for the rest of his food right away lol
  • @Kennedy0830 we walk around the house and I point things out, show him stuffed animals or rattles, sing songs, do bicycle legs or clap his hands while singing. Sometimes I'll lay out a play mat and he kicks around and stretches.

  • @Kennedy0830 we talk about stuff, I'll read to him, sometimes my husband does a little workout with him where he holds him upright and let's him push his legs up.

Omg yes! Constantly changing his and my clothes until i just inevitably give up but I feel so gross all the time.

my LO does this when I have a strong/fast let-down.  My Ped is unconcerned unless there is a color change or blueish tint to her lips/mouth.  If you see the blue color, tell Ped again asap!!

I have had the same problem and have asked both our pedi and LC. They just tell me it's so hard for a baby to learn to drink from a bottle. Both have told me they aren't choking and like a PP said unless they turn blue it's not a huge cause for concern. Also we thought it was apnea but the LC's said the definition of apnea would be not breathing for 30 seconds and that's not the case. We have tried every nipple in the last two weeks. We are now using a NUK adjustable flow because the premie nipple was too slow and she would get sleepy and then decide to forget to swallow, etc. it seems like she is sort of getting thel hang of things and she is now 2.5 weeks old.

  • Anybody else's LO cry so hard that they've made themself horse? Isla had a pretty hard screamfest last night and this morning and its like she is losing her voice! Sounds like it hurts
  • @jparke2 Our LO did in week 1. We called the pediatrician to ask if it was okay, and they told us it's fine. She got her screaming pipes back within the next day or so.
  • Anyone else's baby cry in their sleep? When I was little I had night terrors and fever induced hallucinations and once I could walk I started sleep walking. It really looks like Ezra's having a nightmare- he'll cry for about 15 seconds and then it'll be like nothing happened. This morning he cried for longer and it eventually woke him up and I had to comfort nurse him back to sleep. Breaks my heart!!

Ditto- all the time with both kids. I give it a minute or so to see if they settle back down on their own because I assume it's just a transitional point in their sleep cycle. If they don't settle I help them out with some shushing or rocking.

  • Anyone's LO have baby acne? Any ways to help speed up the process of it going away? How long did it take to clear up on its own? Thanks
