  • @kmolleltz @CopperBoom86  My MIL says she ate a BLT everyday when she was pregnant with my SIL. So I'm not too afraid of bacon either. It's too yummy.  B)

@CopperBoom86 I see that you've decided to eat one, so this is a moot point, but yes I've had hot dogs this pregnancy. Once a cheese dog from an ice cream shop, and once at a cookout. My grilled hot dog was the jam. And, so totally worth it.

@jamiek1882 I feel your pain! I had an AP last pregnancy, and while I haven't had my anatomy scan to confirm I do this time, I haven't felt movements yet and I'm almost 17 weeks. I'm counting down the days to that scan to quell my anxieties!

  • @kmolleltz - Bacon, lunch meats, hot dogs, sausages, etc contain nitrates to help stave off food-borne illnesses. According to most sources I've read "once the nitrites are digested in our guts, they can form nitrosamines, which are considered possibly carcinogenic." Although it seems that it hasn't been determined if those nitrosamines are harmful to a fetus.
I don't think eating one hot dog will be enough nitrates for this to be an issue. 2 hot dogs for every meal for the whole 9 months? Maybe an issue. ;)

@CopperBoom86 I have eaten a few hot dogs! I really don't understand some of the restrictions. I do heat up my lunch meat so it kills any potential bacteria but I don't get why having a cooked hot dog once in a while is going to poison me haha honestly I'm most careful with washing fruits and veggies because that's where the listeria outbreaks always seem to happen.

  • To jump in on the AP conversation, I was told at my NT scan that I have one. She didn't actually say "anterior placenta" she just pointed it out to me and told me I might not feel movement as early as others and that my OB might not be able to find the hb with the doppler. The thing is, my OB found the hb in less than 1 second and I've been feeling very obvious flutters. I'm wondering if it was a partial AP and has moved or if she was wrong all together. I'll ask at my AS next week. It's kind of mind f*** because I feel like I shouldn't be feeling movement but I really feel like I am and then I second guess myself.

  • Uh, yes, I have eaten all of these things. I make sure things are cooked properly, except once I thought I was getting a sausage roll from our food court and it turned out to be a hot dog in the roll... but I only found out when I was back in my office so I ate it anyway because food.

Now that I'm less ill and slightly less horrendously busy, I'm planning on making an effort to eat more healthfully as well as to expose la bébé to as wide a variety of foods as possible in utero.

  • Jumping in on the AP convo as well!  I had my AS on Saturday, and the tech told me I had an AP.  I still feel movement though.... but it probably explains my SO can't feel "kicks" when I tell him the baby is moving.  I also can find the HB on my doppler really quickly!

I'm finding all of this AP talk pretty interesting. I had one last time and felt baby by 18 weeks. I'm 18 weeks tomorrow and I've hardly felt a thing, so I'm suspicious that I have an AP again this time. Thank goodness for dopplers! It seems like a lot of us who have previously had an AP have one again. I wonder if some people are more likely to have one than others and, if so, what factors contribute to that. My daughter also came out sunny side up (the opposite of most babies) and I'm curious if having an AP increases the likelihood of that as well. I'm hoping it's random, because it resulted in some really awful back labor (our spines were rubbing against each other).

I found out I have an AP but have been feeling the baby for a few weeks now (I'm 18w4d). I only feel the baby "swimming" from side to side and haven't felt any distinct kicks yet.

In my experience having an AP has no bearing on finding the HB with a Doppler -- it just mutes the kicks. I felt flutters really early with this pregnancy, it just hasn't progressed to anything more than that yet! I know the kicks will come, but they're just not there right now.

This makes sense. I'm definitely feeling flutters and "rolls" for lack of a better term but no kicks. I can't wait! I feel like I'm in such a holding pattern until the AS. Next week cannot come soon enough!

Yes the rolling for sure!  That's what I feel too!  During the AS, I could see baby totally kicking me.  Several times.  And yet, I felt nothing!

@mrszoess - Unfortunately, the closest Trader Joe's is 197 miles away. I looked it up yesterday because I was looking at a recipe on Pinterest that calls for "Trader Joe's Balsamic Glaze." Now I have to make my own glaze and eat nitrate-filled corndogs :'(

I had an AP last time and seem likely to have one again -- at my last appointment, the midwife couldn't find the heartbeat with the doppler and had trouble getting a good view with the handheld ultrasound. What she said was, "I'll be interested to find out where your placenta actually is," which sounds...ominous? I've felt a couple of movements so far, but nothing for probably two weeks. I am carefully not freaking out.

I thought that lunch meat and hot dogs and sausages were all OK if they were heated to steaming. (Of course, eating too much bacon or whatever is as bad for a pregnant woman as for anyone else.)

My nearest Trader Joe's is about 70 miles away. ALAS.

Really, @BumpAdmin? Weight loss ads on a pregnancy board? Who's the genius that approved that?
I was just about to post that! Way to make my fat ass feel good about those 12lb I've gained. F you, bump gods!

  • I miss drinking wine while making dinner too!! Makes me a lot less likely to cook now that I can't drink wine while doing it haha.
  • You know how because of the Affordable Care Act, we all qualify for a free breast pump?  All depending on the type of insurance you have and what pump they agree to, etc?

I found out that I could order mine as early as September 5!  Totally gonna order it by then!

I'm the same way. I'll eat it but I don't wanna get comments from strangers.  I'll probably send DH to get carry out now that I'm showing
  • @CopperBoom86 They make nitrate free hot dogs/bacon/deli meat. I'm sure there are nitrate free corn dogs out there! Do you have a whole foods or sprouts or something similar near you? I've also found that the super Target near me has a lot of that stuff.  I don't think that nitrates are really damaging unless eaten frequently and/or in large quantities though.  Now I want a corn dog!

@TurtleMomma I, too often cry because I'm crying. It's a vicious cycle & I can't stand it! But I have empathy for you!

My random for the evening...I walked 4 miles after work, I was so proud of myself! And then I promptly came home, ate a giant plate of chicken spaghetti, 2 pieces of garlic bread, and peach cobbler with vanilla icecream for dessert. Oops
  • so I'm extremely overweight and I've lost weight so far this pregnancy. no ms no nothing. so now my mother who had told me my entire life to stop eating is telling me to eat
more. there's nowhere to PUT more mom, I can't eat that much and my metabolism is burning the fat off, the baby is FINE.
  • I got a new Drivers License today. I'm looking forward to NOT being looked at like some kid who stole some other lady's ID, or is trying to pass off a fake.
  • Corn dogs- I have zero understanding regarding why you would deny yourself.

Ads- me too. But mine are for Hondas and realtors. No idea why, I have no cookies that should relate.

Placentas- it's funny you should mention this, I was telling my aunt today about a recent study I read regarding autopsies of elderly mother's brains, and how the researchers were able to identify their children's stem cells in areas of the brain that were repaired. Unfortunately there's another side to this however, and placentas (and pregnancy really) can transfer genetic material to the mother that her body will recognize as foreign, and can be responsible for causing autoimmune disorders. But at any rate, it's all very fascinating stuff no?

  • I've seen countless posts from you guys saying you're eating deli meats and less than well done steaks, so how bad would it be to have a corn dog? I've been CRAVING a corndog and I'm not sure why because it's not something I would usually eat. Maybe it's knowing that it's on the "no no" list or something. But anyway- would you/ have you eaten a corndog or hot dog since you've been KU???
I had a hot dog on the beach because what is better than that?! It was hot off the grill and I was totally fine. As long as it's been thoroughly cooked (my hot dog was a little crispy, ha) and you aren't eating them every single day, I feel like it's fine!
Hot dogs and cheddar wursts. Multiple times. ;)
