I'm glad we aren't the only ones taking our newborn out and about with us. We get lots of ohh tiny baby shouldn't leave the house until 2 months old comments.

We had luck with the Mommy's Bliss gripe water. We've used it twice so far. Both times it's helped with getting our little one to burp or pass gas.

I would totally be ok with not really leaving the house for 2 months because we live on acerage and I can get outside daily for the fresh air so easily. Plus I was so exhausted as a FTM. With my first though we did attend LLL meetings, out to eat, doctor's appointments, a baby shower, visiting some relatives who are local, but nothing too taxing.

Now I have an active toddler so that laid back schedule doesn't work. It is almost summer and there are so many fun things to do and I don't want to miss out on these memories with my toddler. Summer is our busiest time for fun activities so this should be interesting. We also have an early fall camping trip we take every year (we bring our huge dogs along) and we decided to go ahead with that too.

I would loose my shit if I'm stuck in the house for 2 months. I've been home from the hospital now for 3 days and going a bit stir crazy. Hoping we can get into the pediatricians office today as a way of getting out. Once I'm feeling better we will be going out for walks, to have lunch, the store.

  • I specifically asked my pediatrician about taking my son out on trains/public places and she said to go well ahead and that he has a good immune system. Obviously, practice common sense and stay away from someone obviously sick, limit random people touching him and be a bit more wary of places with lots of little kids. If anyone comments to me (I hate the random stranger comments), I can just smile and say his doctor approved the outing.

For those of us with babies that only want to be held...while I don't think the tips are helpful (nothing I didn't already know from 9 months of reading) , the article does remind me how different everything is for her on the "outside world"

  • Just a fair warning about taking prescription pain relievers and alternating with over the cointer NSAIDs, please watch your intake of ibuprofen. Oxy's and Percocet / loratab have a concentration of ibuprofen (the APAP ingredient if you look at the bottle of a generic) based on the concentration of actual Oxycodone ect. You can very easily overdose your ibuprofen limit if you take the recommend dosage of prescription pain reliever and then add an OTC NSAID to it.

  • My LO seems to get very distressed before she poops. Anyone else experiencing this? She cries and gets fussy and gets mad at the boob if she's on it, and then she'll poop and all is ok in the world again.
So much this. He's pretty much inconsolable until he goes and then once he does it's like a switch has been flipped and he's magically better. I'm assuming the gas and buildup just makes him really uncomfortable.

  • Holy spit up batman! I know that spit up is normal but 12 days pp it seems like Ezra spits up every time he eats. It's definitely not ALL of the food (since he usually nurses for 15-20 minutes) but goodness!

Yeah, both my kids have been like this. I chalk it up to their little systems still trying to work things out. Also, lying down is not the optimal pooping position, so I tend to hold them when they are struggling and it's clear it's a poop-related situation. Makes it a tiny bit easier (or at least it seems to). I think DS got the hang of it after about 4-6 weeks, though he also had reflux issue. DD is doing a bit better as the weeks progress.

I'm sorry but this information is incorrect. Like all of it totally wrong. I think what you meant to say is be careful of your acetaminophen (Tylenol) consumption. Percocets contain oxy and Tylenol. None of these drugs contain ibuprofen. Oxycodone is an isolated ingredient, doesn't contain anything else. Please don't post stuff like this unless you have some idea what you're talking about. It's very confusing and misleading...regardless of whether you write a pointless disclaimer.
I apologize. It is acetaminophen (APAP). All the drugs on my brain from studying for my certification exam have me in a fritz while planning for a baby. But Oxycodone (Oxycontin) does in fact contain acetaminophen that's why it's listed as a fraction. IE: 5/325 The denominator is the strength of acetaminophen in the drug. Anyhow, the point of the post was for caution.
Edited to add because I do feel like a complete DA- especially when going into pharmaceuticals as a profession- that I was thinking APAP and i know thats acetaminophen. I cant believe I said ibuprofen. I really do apologize. I'm just so paranoid about ODs on everyones account and am super drug conscious and really just wanted to make sure everyone is keeping themselves and their LOs safe. I really do apologize ladies!

I'm sorry to be rude but you're still mixing things up a bit...in no country that I am aware of does OxyContin contain acetaminophen. OxyContin is long acting oxycodone. Also you should check your fractions...the denominator is the bottom number...not the top number! Let's drop the conversation so as to avoid any confusion. The ladies on the board have heard enough from me about checking with the appropriate sources about their drugs!!
  • I'm aware the denominator is the bottom number? That's what I said. The higher number is the strength of the Tylenol. Higher as in larger, not where it is placed in the fraction. But ok. I'm fine with dropping it.

Same here ... No matter how much we burp LO he seems to dribble out some spit up 75% of feedings ! We go through burp cloths like crazy !

So Gripe water and Gas drops are doing nothing to help Lucy. They are now calling her extremely colicky. She cries inconsolably for hours every night right around bed time. Nothing helps. I cry every time partly out of frustration/lack of sleep and partly because it is heartbreaking that I can't help her.  MH thinks I am being a baby and that both I and our daughter need to "suck it up and deal."  She sounds like she is being strangled every time. Its so much worse than any other crying she does.

Anyone else dealing with major levels of colic / crying?  People saying "oh colic usually only lasts from 3weeks to 12weeks" isn't helping.  I am not sure how I will handle another 9-10 weeks of this!  It's overwhelming and I feel like there is no end in sight. I feel drained and miserable constantly.
  • @Kurrant I have no suggestion other than letting your husband try to console her while you leave the house for a bit. Maybe he'll be a little more sensitive. Yeesh....

@kurrant Can you try youtubing some calming techniques? We watched happiest baby on the block and have another calming dvd from the hospital we need to watch. While not perfect, we've been able to use some of the techniques to calm our LO briefly. Specifically, we were giving up on swaddling, but the video encouraged to keep going with it. Once swaddled, tilt baby to side and jiggle slightly. Also, he made a great point that when they are screaming and crying, they can't hear you trying to soothe them. He recommends getting right in their ear and loudly "shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh"'ing for as long as you can/until they stop screaming. Worth a shot at least?
  • I don't have any good advice @kurrant, but big hugs. I know babies with colic can be overwhelming, I can only imagine how exhausted you must be. Sorry if I missed it, but have you tried wearing her? Or going in the stroller or car? Maybe the noise plus movement might help soothe her a little bit so you can have a few minutes to relax? Good luck!

@kurrant, you may have already been given this suggestion, but when DS was really upset  (he had wicked witching hours  for a few weeks) it always helped to wear him and vacuum. The loud white noise from the vacuum and the close swaying movement did the trick.

Another vote for happiest baby on the block here! We watched it before we had the baby and then again our second day home with her and the techniques have been so helpful. It really helped my H get involved and built his confidence that he can soothe her when she cries too. The dvd is really helpful because you can see exactly how to do the techniques but I'd recommend the book as well if you're dealing with colic because he talks a lot about it specifically. I'm so sorry you're going through this. HUGs.
  • Ezra has a rough witching hour sometimes- I've found what has helped is ergo-ing him and playing music with a strong base. Dunno why, but it relaxes him just enough to try other things, like nursing or the paci.
  • Does anyone else's baby poop almost after every feed? We brought him home from the hospital yesterday where he had 4 day 2 bowel movements which the nurses said was great, but then yesterday and today he's been pooping a TON - yesterday he had 8 poopy diapers and today he's had 6 so far. Breastfeeding is going well (my milk came in yesterday) and he's been cluster feeding so maybe it's just a reflection of all the milk going through his system but it just seems like a lot. We are thinking he has stock in Pampers.

Yep, ours poops after every feeding. It's almost like clockwork. We change his diaper to wake him up then feed, then he poops and we change it again. One day, we used a whole pack of diapers for wet and poopy ones.
I think as long as his poops reflect what it's suppose to look like as a breastfed baby then you're good.

Thankfully, our friends came yesterday and gave us a ton of size 1 diapers their son no longer fits in! So grateful.

Yassss ! This ! Sometimes we change LO lift him off the changing only to hear the most massive fart and set him back down again to change . DH and I are still in amazement how many diapers we can through in one day. We also have a friend who is bringing us size one diapers their baby girl can no longer fit in - super thankful ! Anyone else trip on how heavy some off the pee diapers are ??? Lol !

Thanks for the advice ladies.  Sadly leaving MH to deal with the cry-fest doesn't really work. He lets her cry it out without even batting an eye.  He will talk to her like she is a grown person that can be reasoned with. "Lucine! calm down. You need to learn to deal with this"  *eye roll* He gets to the point where if I get up to soothe her he gets annoyed that I am undoing all his work of ignoring her.  I am just not capable of doing that!

I don't have a good light weight wrap to wear her.  We have a Mountain buggy Juno to wear her for walks but it isn't practical in the house.  I might look to get a K'tan...seems like a lot of ladies around here like that one and say its easiest to use.  Anyone have any input on that?

The loud "Shhhhhhhh" works ( i was trying that last night ) but she starts up again within 30 seconds even if I keep the "shhh" going. Sometimes picking her up and holding her does nothing but get my punched in the face.

Ill try the side jiggle, bouncing, and the Happiest baby video.  I might try the vacuum but I'm not sure that MH or the neighbors below us will appreciate it at 9:30-11:30 at night :P  But if I try it and it works then everyone else will just have to deal with it!

@kurrant the K'tan is awesome. No fuss, no muss wrap. It's seriously so easy to wear and you'll feel secure wearing it.

Keep up the good work! Your situation sounds challenging at best, but you're doing an awesome job.
  • @babyfmama Yep. BF babies poop a lot, especially when they're very young. Probably in the next few days you'll see the number of poop and wet diapers even out. As long as you get both throughout the day and the poop is in the fall color range (yellow is optimal because it shows that baby is getting plenty of hindmilk once the milk has come in) then everything is fine.

I also recommend a hair dryer. That's what helped my friends little girl when she was super colicky. The white noise is calming for them.

Anyone who is looking for shushing white noise may want to look into this. Our newborn photographer used it during our photo session and it really seemed to calm LO. We get anywhere from 3 to 4 hrs a night with this and a technique called super swaddling which we found on YouTube. Independently they weren't working, but after 3 weeks of little sleep, this combination was a lifesaver.

They also make an app with the same sound if you want to try it tonight.

@Kurrant FX mama. You're doing a wonderful job. I imagine it's beyond stressful, but you are her only comfort in the whole world. She needs you and it seems like you're on the road to discovering a solution. Hugs.

Update....its 11:20.  LO has been awake and freaking since 6:30....nothing is working. The only time she is peaceful is when she eats but she stops eating fairly quickly. DH is fast asleep and I'm just grumpy and drained. I need a miracle at this point.

That must be so tough. So sorry you are going through this. Have you and your dh discussed taking turns with her? You need some rest as well.
