Anyone know when belly buttons pop out? I am 30 weeks and I thought it would happen by now...
I'm almost 29 weeks. Hasn't popped yet. Neither of my sister's popped either. But it is kind of looking closed up. In the words of my H... "oh no, you're belly button's shutting down!"
I thought of another thing.. is anyone doing something like freezing meals during the last few weeks to throw in the crock pot after you have the baby? I'm debating whether or not to actually do this since it'll be summer and we rarely if ever use our crock pot when it's so hot out, but I'm not sure what the other route would be. Thoughts?
You could do cold soups! I'm planning on a cold tomato soup and a cucumber fennel soup.
These waterlogic water coolers are straight up voodoo magic. I'm not a big water fan, but I can't get enough of the water from this water cooler. I need one at home!
@schaze my friends and I are planning our next big freezer meal session for June so I have them after this baby is born! We've done it before (just to help us since we all have kids) and it's such a blessing to have that as an option when you don't want to plan and shop for much! Especially when you are exhausted!
My friends all provide 2 weeks worth of hot meals delivered each day after a baby is born within our group and that is by far the best! We all joke that we want more babies just to get the meals! Maybe see if your friends would be up for starting that? We use the website www.takethemameal.com - it does all the organizing for you!
For anyone asking about why glut injections are becoming a thing of the past... There's more nerves and blood supply there than in your arms. If they're actually using your butt they aren't supposed to be... There is a hip muscle that's less vascular higher up ans that's where they're supposed to use. We choose sites based on thickness of muscle to amount of fluid in the injection, you basically can't give anymore than 2 mls in the arm or it won't be absorbed by the muscle and it's useless. The vastus lateralis (outer thigh) and gluteus medius (top of the butt/hip) are current Recs for larger volumes and deltoid for smaller volumes. When I went through nursing school 5 years ago they didn't even teach gluteus max injections.
Also when I went through nursing school we gave Tdap to pp moms and that was slightly progressive, it's been the last 3 years due to the upswing in whooping cough cases that the injections have changed to third trimester Recs.
I think the last time I looked it up is unless you've had the Tdap within 2 years you should be getting it again because by year 3 it's 50% effective from original dose.
You are 100% correct. Also the CDC changed the recommendations around 3 years ago?
@schaze I'm planning to stock us up as basically a huge sandwich buffet- think "foods you might find in a college dorm". DH hates reheated frozen food and isn't big on leftovers. Going to keep several types of breads/ tortillas, several sandwich meats, toppings, sauces, springing for big batches of pre-chopped fruit and veg toward the end, prewashed salad boxes, cheeses and olives, nuts, pickles, yogurt, granola bars, canned soup, and keeping DH's fave chips and cookies and comfort foods on hand. Planning on eating soups, salads, sandwiches, and smoothies for a solid month (delivery doesn't reach us). There are options if you don't like frozen stuff or don't want to put in that kind of effort while super pregnant!
I'm wondering if there's a bunch of fathers to be sitting around on some internet board somewhere talking about the possibilities of prepping freezer meals....haha nope.
@rnyland1 my H lives to cook and makes his own ravioli, mole sauce, and other deliciousness for freezing. He's our primary chef with me playing a reluctant sou.

I hunted high and low on the interwebs for the perfect summer freezer plan. I wanted something that utilizes the grill, not the crockpot, felt fresh, and utilized whole foods. "I am that lady" blog has an awesome plan that you can follow. For $2.99 you get all the instructions, printables, grocery lists, etc to prep 20 meals with side dish recommendations (10 meals doubled) for the freezer. If you shop at Aldi, the meals can be put together for $155. Much like elenabrant, we'll pair all the meats with whatever veggies come in our CSA that week. Here is the menu:

To his credit, My husband is actually making cube-steak sandwiches for dinner tonight. I guess it's a southern thing? So while he's not the best cook, I'll gladly allow him to cook when he wants to!! I don't see him prepping any freezer meals for us though.
@schaze I do freezer cooking all year, so I definitely will be doing one more session before baby. The other ladies already gave great ideas so I won't add much, but when it's warmer out I like to have different meat/sauce combos pre made in the freezer to thaw in the morning and throw in the oven/crockpot or on the grill for sandwiches and tacos and pasta. It still requires a bit of additional prep of things to go along with it, but it still is a major time saver. Buffalo chicken sandwiches from the crockpot are DHs favorite!

@rakel88 I'll make my own. Probably a fair amount of olive oil + spices, chimichurri, oil and balsamic, pesto, etc. Simple things. All I really want is for the meat to be pre-seasoned when I defrost it and throw it on the grill.
We are planning on living off easy, lazy food so a lot of dinner sandwiches and salads. Tacos and burrito bowls are a staple in our house already so more of those. I'm also a city dweller so there's no room to freeze more than a few things even if I was motivated. I'd have to take my ice cream maker out of the freezer and that's not happening
Watching an episode of Law and Order SVU where a 38 week pregnant lady is kidnapped and goes into labor and Stabler has to deliver her baby but she has placenta previa! Too real right now. Now I'm afraid of getting kidnapped and having to deliver my baby in some nasty shack by the sea!
@theshannondee Do you have a high pain tolerance? That would be my guess and not fat arms. ;-) TDap didn't bother me, but my husband whined about his for days.
@IB113 Definitely doesn't happen to everyone. My stomach was flabby before pregnancy and used to fold over right across my belly button. It's almost a round bump now, but there's still a dip in the middle. With DD, my belly wasn't truly nice and round until about 38 weeks and the belly button never came close to popping.
@whataboutscience I hope that's it! I have never really had any serious pain, even from broken bones or tattoos so maybe I do have a high tolerance. Fingers crossed that carries over to birth?
I have to be at work in twelve minutes and I'm still in bed. I swear, walking over the threshold of that building gets harder every day. But so does moving in general lol
Also, all of this input on TDAP was helpful. I'm getting mine this afternoon. Since it seems like a fairly new thing to get during pregnancy, I'd rather wait until immediately after delivery but then again, I'm pretty trusting of medical professionals (you know, because I'm not one) so if my doctor says it's safer for baby, I'm on board. Give me allllll of the shots, Doc!
@KatieBird0106 the point of getting during pregnancy is to protect your unborn child. Getting it from week 28 to 34 give the two weeks needed to help build thay immunity for baby. Getting it after delivery does not for that child. Very little of its immunity is passed through breastfeeding. Hence the change 3-4 years ago to have pregnant women have it.
If you get the TDaP shot while pregnant for the sake of passing it onto the baby, does it then show up on the baby's immunization record?
I don't remember getting this my first time, but that was 6 years ago. My doctor hasn't mentioned it this time, so I'm wondering if they'll just spring it on me (which seems to be normal at my office since no one told me to prep for my glucose test).
Today I woke up thinking 1. I really want to hug my sister (she is currently studying abroad in Australia) and 2. I can't believe some women chose to get pregnant more than once.

Hahahah to #2. I was thinking the same thing when that first trimester bullshit kicked in. I was like, "soooo, why did I sign up for this a second time?" But, it all makes sense in the end.

Piggybacking off the Tdap conversation, I read recently about some of the things they give baby right after birth (the article made it sound standard, but I haven't directly asked my doctor about it). The article was talking about the Hep B shot and the zinc? ointment they put on the baby's eyes to protect against possible venereal disease from the birth canal apparently. The article made it sound like both of these interventions were unnecessary if the mother had been testing negative for STDs throughout the pregnancy and that they could have potentially negative effects for the baby in those first few days. My question I guess is for STMs or people with more medical knowledge than I have whether this is even an issue that can be discussed with a hospital or if it's really even that big of a deal. I'm not anti-vax by any means, but I'm still very cautious about what kind of medicines are administered, especially to my newborn kid, if they aren't actually necessary. Thoughts?

@winnie1122 I'm not a STM but a pediatrician spoke with our class last night and answered your specific question. They give the ointment and Hep B shot because there's always a chance that mom contracted Hep B or an STI during the second or last trimester, well after we've all been tested. Giving newborns a shot and ointment just makes sure they're covered no matter what. Hope that helps!
July BMB Siggy Challenge: Weird Hot Dog Situations
My sister is doing my maternity pictures for free and I appreciate her doing it but she is asking me to drive almost an hour to do them on a campus closer to her. My campus is GORGEOUS and I would much rather do them there. PLUS, with my swelling situation, the LAST thing I need is an hour drive in a car. I don't want to be picky about someone doing something for free but come on, man.

@joleri23 Thanks! I wonder if they would be willing to test me again for STIs before birth rather than give the interventions 'just in case.' I'm 100% confident I don't have and won't contract anything, so though I understand they can't just take my word for it, I'd much rather they just test me again than give unnecessary stuff to my little guy. I'll have to make sure to add that to my list of questions for my OB next time I see her.

@winnie1122 I'm going to discuss similar things with my Dr as the time gets closer as well. They just passed a law in my state that the eye ointment will be elective beginning July 1, 2016. Up until now, they've been physically restraining (if necessary) parents who declined the eye ointment for their newborns. Most of the time parents would be asked to sign a waiver, but it depended on the hospital.
@schaze I have 5 dinners ready to go in my freezer when organic chicken went on super sale last week. I live in Central Florida so it's always hot, I guess I didn't think of not using it in July. Since they "expire" in 3 months I wanted to wait before I made more than that.
I can tell I'm getting bigger because EVERYONE is holding doors open for me now and I've gotten a couple "when are you due?" comments. Hahaha... 2 more months. Home stretch!
I kind of side-eye the people who think that their newborn doesn't need the standard medical treatments. They're there for a reason. Why bother questioning it?? I feel like these same people go on to be anti-vaxxers or demand alternate vaccination schedules which just make everything more dangerous for the rest of us. And hate to break it to you but you can NEVER be 100% sure that you don't have an STI....yes, no matter how much you trust your SO there is always a possibility that your SO might be withholding information from you!! I mean, they could test right before you gave birth but would they have time to get the results back that fast? Why risk it? I didn't question when they gave an HIV blood test, even when I was "100% sure" that I didn't have it. They do it for safety reasons. To protect your child. ugh.
The ladies at one of my husbands clinics got him a Target giftcard and a card saying congrats on the baby... and apparently made the comment that the gift card was "specifically for him since the Dad's always get forgotten about." Ummmm, whut? Sorry, but nipple cream and breast covers don't really count as "gifts for mom." Luckily he was sort of rolling his eyes at the comment and said of course this is for the baby but I'm still baffled at their reasoning...
